Windows 8 is fine.

-If she's spending 3k I would at least look into the possibility of a 120Hz monitor. I don't have one myself but from everything I've read about them it is a must for my next build.

-Is she set on the Phatom 820? If she's looking to save a little money it might be worth looking into some comparable cases in the $100-$150 range. There are many IMO.

-You can get the Samsung 840 250gb for $30 cheaper if you get it from Amazon

They're cheaper in the MBP (2.5") than the MBA (1.8"), or at least that's what I found when I purchased my MBA SSD.

Seriously, for anyone that's complained of lag in they're older Macbook, I've pointed to upgrading to an SSD first. Makes a big difference in speed and battery. And I've always used Carbon Copy Cloner. Clone old HDD to new SSD, boot in target mode, verify SSD cloned successfully, replace HDD with cloned SSD.

Also, RAM is better handled in OSX Mavericks with Compressed Memory.

That's because it's a generation old and not manufactured anymore.

Here's the more recent iteration at amazon, without any particular deal going on.

For me it did, these are products I bought (maybe somebody has better recommendations, since I just bought them without doing that much research) :

RAM:
Kingston Technology 8GB Kit (2x4 GB Modules) 1066MHz DDR3

SSD:
Samsung MZ-7TD250BW 840 Series Solid State Drive (SSD) 250 GB Sata 2.5-Inch

RAM had a discount when I bought it, so I was looking at ~$350 dlls investment, if I recall correctly. Needles to say, it was the best investment I have ever made in terms of my computer. My boot-up is in around 12 seconds and apps like word open up instantly.

If you want to keep your computer around for a couple of more years, I really recommend it.

edit: I had a friend help out with it, meaning that pretty much he did it. There are some good tutorials around the web.

I have this same laptop with the high res display. I have maxed out the RAM and have upgraded to an SSD. Sadly, I still feel like I need to upgrade to a newer model laptop, but they are just so expensive. I was hoping to get much more life out of a 4 year old laptop, especially one with the hardware updates I described. Yosemite seems to have slowed me down, and the graphics card on this laptop has never performed very well.

That said, the transition to SSD was pretty flawless for me. This is the drive I purchased: http://amzn.com/B009NHAEXE

it is really easier to just get 2 different large capacity platter drives and two cheap 120 gig SSD drives and use them for the OS.

Samsung 840 series SATA3 128 gig drives sell for $97 on amazon.

Samsung 840 series in 250 gig drives sell for just $169.99 on amazon.

I have reviewed those drives in the past and they are some of the best drives i think out currently and the most reliable. I even got taken on a tour of their fabrication facility and I even use them in my macbook pro and hackintosh.

Just something else.
I thought you were over hyping intel optane.

NVMe vs SSD vs Optane + HDD.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BS_6xOf0mw

Its not to say Optane is bad. But, you're selling optane + hdds as a better solution to NVMe and SSD raid. SSD's have a 0.5% failure rate but are more prone to bad blocks. As such, HDD will always be the best choice for archiving.

As for the "minimal benefits" of raid, welp, just 2 ssds in raid closed the gap to NVMe.

As for reliability:
" Samsung 840 Series is theoretically reliable up to 21.4 years "
" Compare that to the fact that an HD drive is 50% likely to fail after 6 years."

I have many reasons not to use what you call "spinning rust" in my daily Gaming Rig. Aside from the obvious disadvantage to load times, theres extra heat, power consumption, NOISE (Thermaltake view 71 open glass), bulky size, unappealing aesthetics, unreliability, vibration.

Lets get something straight.
Your Raid array didn't kill your drive. Your drive failed, and killed the Raid array. And it was a HDD none the less.
I'm sorry for your data loss. Next time, back up your sensitive data on more than one partition / drive.

well the 840 pro is currently the best AFAIK, if you're looking for deals go with the M4, the 840, the m5s, or the Chronos.

You can't afford not to get an SSD, the HDD is the biggest bottleneck in modern day computers, at least put your OS on the SSD and media on a mechanical HDD. Plus, they're really not that expensive - $175 is pretty inexpensive: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-MZ-7TD250BW-Series-Solid-2-5-Inch/dp/B009NHAEXE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1377549060&sr=8-3&keywords=Samsung+840

? On the US store I see

Makes sense! If lightness is what you need most, the Air is the best way to go.

The SSD isn't limited to the Air and Retina, it's only installed by Apple at the factory for those two models because they use non-industry standard parts. Those SSDs are also twice as expensive as standard SSDs. With something like the Samsung 840 Series in the standard MBP, you might actually get better performance and energy efficiency than the Apple installed SSDs, for a little less than Apple charges.

For simplicity sake, the convenience of having Apple install everything for you might be worth the higher price tag. Just be sure to get AppleCare if you choose to go with the Air or Retina, as you'll be at their mercy should anything break or fail after the one year warranty is up. Other service providers will pass down the high parts costs and possibly high labor costs to you, to the point where it might make more sense just to buy another $2k Mac in 3 years (which is what Apple wants).

830's are always orange as far as I know. This is the link to the one OP is looking at on Amazon. They have a separate listing for the Pro model.

OP is correct that the 840 hasn't fallen in price relative to the 850. I've noticed it before, and I think its been the case for most of the time that the 850 has been out.

I know for a fact that this is the non-pro version of the 830 even (I purchased it years ago according to Amazon) and its 256gb version is more expensive than the 850 EVO 250gb.

u/gwhooligan · 0 pointsr/mac

You can get a 256gb Samsung 840 from Amazon for $164, but I don't know if the airs will fit a standard 2.5in SSD.
