That ssd is only $179 brand new so it's not like you are saving much there plus you can't compare to the cost of an internal upgrade since you don't get the convenience or speeds that provides.

Then the macbook is only $150 cheaper new from apple and is $75+ more expensive then they are selling for new on ebay.

Good luck with selling but you might want to adjust prices if no-one is interested.

If you want a simpler SSD solution (no enclosure needed), I would recommend taking a look at the Samsung T3. I'm using the previous generation (T1).

The Samsung T3 is the best. With a thunderbolt 3 cable you can get 380Mb/s write speed easily and it's very small. https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-T3-Portable-SSD-MU-PT500B/dp/B01AVF6UQQ

u/aNationOfConquerors · 3 pointsr/StarWarsBattlefront

You need a minimum 256mb external SSD drive for it to work.

Then just transfer the game to the SSD and you will be loading very fast.

I am using this one, but that price is much higher than what I paid. closer to $140.

I ordered one of these, and just have it sitting nearby.
Extra space on top of significantly faster load times for my menus and stuff. If I had the money, I'd have sprung for one of the larger ones.

You should get the samsung t3 portable ssd. I think it perfectly suits your need. It comes in various storage options, is very compact and sleek, and has a usb-c port. Here's a link.

I think the Samsung T3/T5 SSD are your best bet.

That's incredible that your folks are willing to support you in this and it's a great chance for your channel to take off! So this leaves you with...5 months to get that momentum? I believe you can do it, and once it hits that 2k mark, it only multiplies so long as you're consistent with it!

It sounds as though you have an audience already in mind, but what I would recommend is putting a least a couple video projects together that would have a long shelf-life.

What I mean is if you are able, do some DIY/guide type videos for relatively common subjects/problems in your niche. If (more like when) they get searched for, you'll see that things with an inherent value and good SEO can last for a LONG time.

$800 is an awesome budget for this too! Wish I had that much to work with when I started. I don't know what kind of content you create, but investing in at least a studio-quality mic, decent editing software, a good sized SSD and an external storage as well. Camera of course would be necessary if it's a vlog style or whatnot, but again, not sure what you're going for here. Doing gaming oriented content, I have no need for a camera (yet).

Here's what I'm running with - having a computer is already implied:

Honestly you'd do best with something like this External SSD

Amazon Link

The faster you can load the data, the better. Also gives you the option to move to USB 3-C in the future, which you just switch out the cable and get a faster connection, should they chose to include USB C in the new Mac Book whenever that's announced.

I personally edit of the internal fusion drive in my 2012 iMac and store footage and personal stuff on a 5TB desktop hard drive (almost full).

Hind-sight 20-20, I would have preferred to get a larger raid array for my desk, something on the order of 20TB. Then also have a 500GB or bigger external SDD for fast editing of my current 1 or 2 projects. And then also a 2-4TB external hard drive for on-site backup and transporting large files. I don't know how I would like that setup, but from those that have some of the components, it seems like it would be a great setup. I would then reserve my computer hard drive for personal stuff.

I have this one. Works great, worth the price.

Not Thunderbolt but its USB-C. I'm using this one

Alright so I need help haha. Alienware 15" R3 or this Razer Blade late 2016 model? I really Can't decide. For the Razer blade I thought about purchasing this: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-T3-Portable-SSD-MU-PT250B/dp/B01AVF6UQQ?th=1&psc=1
Would I be able to save games and software on that ssd and run from that? Obvisouly I'll have to remember to keep it on me and plug in.
Any other thoughts and opinions on what machine I should go with will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I had this issue on my Xbox, amongst other pretty random issues with the game crashing. I bought an SSD on Amazon and moved all of my game data to it, which fixed all of my crashing issues:

My thinking was the physical disk didn't have the read/write speeds to handle the large number of large assets in Fallout 4, and that an SSD would decrease the frantic disk scanning that happens before everything gets loaded into RAM.

I haven't had any crashes since, and it was the last device in my house to use a rotating drive, so good riddance.

u/jwei92 · 1 pointr/DestinyTheGame

I have one of these.

I just wasn't sure if I should format it just yet, but are you saying if I hook this up to my PS4 through the USB ports, I can just use it as extended storage and get SSD performance?

u/PDP_MRPOPO · 1 pointr/razer
  1. Just plug and play. I'm running a Samsung T3 with my blade right now, works flawlessly and is fast. https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-T3-Portable-SSD-MU-PT500B/dp/B01AVF6UQQ/

  2. Either from Razer or if you buy from HiDevolution, they offer extra ones there as well. stocks run out pretty fast so basically have to check often for it.

  3. What resolution are you trying to run it? If its one monitor it won't really be an issue, use the HDMI or a thunderbolt or usb 3 to Displayport adapter and it'll work fine. Multi-monitor is hard to set up to use the 1060 properly. If its standard 1080p, you'll get pretty good performance, anything over that will depend on the game you're playing.

I bought a Samsung T3 drive when they were on sale last year. Menus load nearly instantly. And sometimes I've gotten to the tower almost a full 2-3 minutes before the rest of my fireteam.

u/Likesbisexualgirls · 1 pointr/pathofexile

I don't know much about portable ones but i think you're most likely looking for a usb 3.1 one, this one is not cheap but has some good reviews on amazon, there are cheaper options too.

I ended up buying the Samsung Portable SSD T5 500GB in lieu of the Samsung SSD 850 Evo, will that work in comparison to 500 Gb Samsung T3 drive?

u/dopedub · 1 pointr/MacOS

A few things worth considering if you are running Mojave: You cannot run APFS on USB-based external SSD/HDD devices as your boot drive. I'm not sure about Thunderbolt though.

I made the mistake of upgrading to Mojave thinking it wouldn't convert from HFS+ to APFS. After a restart the system couldn't load the SSD at all. I'm now back on the internal 1TB HDD and it's painfully slow...

On the other hand, the 500 Gb Samsung T3 drive worked flawlessly under High Sierra. Adobe apps started in less than 5 seconds. Spotify/iTunes loaded instantly. Restarts were under 20 seconds more or less. I also have 24GB of RAM so I could easily run multiple apps without any issues whatsoever.

u/dragontology · 1 pointr/htpc

Ah, so you rolled your own? That's cool. I just bought one of these.

u/alxpre · 1 pointr/DataHoarder

It's either the Seagate Slim drives that's already been linked or more expensive flash storage:

• USB Drives look to top out at 512GB ($367 CAN)
• A Toshiba USB-C SSD External 500 GB ($280) or 1TB ($520).

To expand my Macbook Air I went piecemeal: Sandisk Cruzer 128GB + 2x 256 GB SD cards (one in native slot, one in USB adapter). Would not recommend - the Cruzer drive is tiny but gets real hot, and SD cards aren't known for being particularly reliable.

u/zyck_titan · 1 pointr/hardware

Best would probably be an SSD, since it has no moving parts, dropping it, even while it's running, shouldn't damage anything.

Other options are the 'ruggedized' portables, but I find them to be hit or miss.

u/atetuna · 1 pointr/gadgets

Look up portable SSD's. It will probably be a better value since you don't need a separate card reader, will almost certainly be a few times faster, and some are pretty damn small too. I have the 250GB version of this, and I'll keep going this way when it comes to massive portable storage. Also note that there are both 1TB and 2TB versions available to order right now.

u/keerthi_iyengar · 1 pointr/Logic_Studio

You should consider an SSD hard drive - it maintains performance of having files locally, is feather light and is more rugged than a regular hard drive.

Thunderbolt is expensive and doesn't offer much performance benefit over USB3 for Logic - it is better for low latency requirements such as soundcards

This is what I have
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Portable-External-MU-PT500B-AM/dp/B01AVF6UQQ/ref=dp_ob_title_ce

I use Time Machine to backup this as well as my built-in hard drive (Time Machine can be configured to backup multiple drives including external drives)

I've been running Windows off this $99 250gb SSD for a couple months now and it works great.

Yeah I was just about to go for an HDD and then found this

That seems pretty reasonable, but I guess not much room for anything but Kontakt, and I could get a much larger HDD for the same price. I just had such a shitty experience with the WD Elements I'm all scared of HDDs now lol.

u/kwende123 · 0 pointsr/RetroPie

>Just to be clear, external HDDs require a good bit more power than most USB devices and that's why some come with external power supplies.

This is a good point, thanks for bringing it up. Just to be clear, I think the external drive is kinda' like a large USB thumbdrive: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-T3-Portable-SSD-MU-PT500B/dp/B01AVF6UQQ.

However, your original point is valid and still stands: I had a lot of stuff plugged in (keyboard, controller, this drive) - and the power is limited on these Pis. I guess I'm coming around to the fact it might not be a retropie issue inasmuch as a pie issue.

Thanks for your time and response.

Edit:
Your point about the transfer rate - I was transferring a folder, so there's likely a bunch of time spent doing file system bookkeeping, etc in my experiment.
