Honestly, headphones all the way. A quality pair of earbuds for outside use though, I use noise-isolating cones with them too. They sound pretty great but does anybody have suggestions for something better?
I don't know what platform you're on, but you might want to give some cheap IEMs a try. If you're on Playstation, you can plug these guys into your controller and get sound that won't spill over to a sleeping wife for $22. I mean... anything works, these were just the first pair I came across that were cheap and had an in-line mic with volume controls... There are probably hundreds of similar headphones.

FWIW, it's not just you. I'm a transcriptionist, and I've just come to accept the fact that every pair of earbuds has a limited lifespan (usually way shorter than I hope).
You may also be particularly sensitive to changes in the sound quality; it's not clear to me if you're experiencing complete failure (no sound output at all) or reductions in sound quality, but in my career, either is obviously a crippling issue. What usually happens for me is that one side of the headset stops working or suffers such a significant reduction in sound quality it becomes problematic for hearing on that channel.
I, too, have tried cheap earbuds, expensive ones, Bluetooth, and non-Bluetooth and have had issues with them all. Currently, I'm using these for the past month and a half. I've gone through these and these in the past year or so, and while these currently still work, the sound quality's not good enough that I want to use them for challenging audio.
I have these, too, which were recommended to me by "a guy who does lots of audio engineering work," and I honestly can't fathom why. They're uncomfortable in the ear, and they seem to have some sort of power-saving mechanism that shuts off the phones when there's no noise. They're constantly shutting down and reactivating whenever audio is too quiet for even a moment, making talking on the phone with them, listening to music, or transcribing all infeasible.
Everyone has their own preferences - there are two thicker wires going from the 3.5mm audio out on the internal amp and are pretty crap. I wanted something that's fast in the bass to be pretty highly rated:. Symphonized: $25. And with the vali 2 I can get the LCD-2 used for a great all rounder for PC gaming and movies.

Preferred tonal balance - Not really familiar with these terms but I do know that I don't want too little or too much bass. As for the other tones as long as it's similar to my current earphones that's fine.

Preferred Type of Headphone - I want an earbud that doesn't go inside of the ear. I've been using the default Apple earbuds for a while which I liked, but they broke so now I'm looking for a new pair
Past headphones - I once owned a pair of Symphonized NRG 3.0 Earbuds but they were a bit unconfortable to wear and kept falling out due to the plastic thing that goes inside your ear. I usually just used the default apple earbuds, but they're overpriced for what they are so I'd like a better option.
Preferred Music - I mostly listen to classical and Jazz music but I do like to listen to Rap as well.
What would you like to improve on from your set-up - Honestly, if you can find something that sounds better than apple earbuds for $30 or less then that would be great.

To me, the first one seems too good to be true. But if you can find something better please let me know. I'm willing to stretch the budget a bit, so if there is a really good pair that's like $35 or something I can probably justify it

Source: Everything, really, but mostly my laptop (nothing fancy)
Music: Similarly, all purpose. Nothing too heavy on either end, no house or EDM.
Isolation: Rather have it than not, but I'm not too picky.
Type: Earbud or IEM. Over-ear headphones are uncomfortable.
Previous: Currently use these JVC Xtreme Xplosives for my computer and occasionally my devices. They're good, fairly comfortable. Had them for almost four years and starting to show some wear. Also have gone through three pairs of the $8 classic Panasonic buds which I use mainly while working out. Very unglamorous but reliable
Tonal balance: Balanced or V shaped.
Improvement: I prefer an L shaped jack over a straight jack (I don't know any of the technical terms, I'm a newbie).
Currently looking at Xiaomi Hybrid IEMs and Symphonised NRG IEM but super open to suggestions. Thanks!

For the money I don't think they can be beat.
I'm looking for some good earphones, doesn't need to have a mic or volume controls. I'm looking to spend around $75.
Looking through Amazon, these two seem to be pretty highly rated:
Symphonized: $25. Top rated on Amazon, but I'm personally not really a fan of the wooden design, but that's not a big issue. Top rated also usually means cheapest in relation to quality.
Smiphee: $30. A review states that these sound good due to having the EQ changed. I listen to all types of genre and I prefer to typically listen to music as is. The original price was also at $100, but that seems a bit inflated compared to 'actual' price.
Klipsch X11: $80. These are costly compared to the other two and I'm not sure if it's worth the $50 difference. I've owned Klipsch S4s before and liked it, but that was about 8 years ago and I'm not sure if other companies have better technology nowadays since Klipsch doesn't even make these anymore. And their newer lines don't have good ratings.
Procrastinating by researching on amazon and found these noise cancelling ones for reasonable price.

Looking for my first pair of good IEMS, I've just been using these
