I have been using the VHD-H2HARCi model for two years now and it has worked fairly well.

I have a set of A50s hooked into the optical and some speakers on the RCA out.

The only difference between the two (as far as I can tell) is that
the 'i' model supports CEC.

You should get a good 24 or 27 inch monitor, IPS panels are really good and yes 1080p is enough. I have used an Asus MG279Q for my PS4, but now I'm using a TV. The image quality was awesome, but for the sound I had to use a HDMI audio extractor, it isn't hard to setup, basically you just have to hook everything up.

I'm using a Monoprice 105704 4 x 4 True Matrix HDMI Switch/Splitter with Remote Control with the 4th HDMI port going to an HDMI audio extractor ViewHD HDMI Audio Extractor Support Ultra HD | 4K | ARC | MHL | TOSLINK Optical Audio Output + RCA L/R Audio Converter | VHD-H2HARCi for my whole house Zone2 audio/video. I've had two ShieldTVs, AppleTV Gen1, Boxee Boxes and other HDMI devices connected at the same time without switching problems from the remote, front panel buttons or through the serial port control, which is what I normally use, to an HDMI (non-CEC) supported connected TV.
