If you can add some money, buy this monitor instead which has FreeSync and is 144Hz.

Otherwise, if you can't spend 50$ more, check out this and this.

Don't buy a non-freesync monitor.

As for the 480, no it won't overheat, the node202 has a big grill right where the fan is, so it can take as much air as it wants. MOreover, since it's a blower style card, the volume of the case doesn't affect the cooling (cold air is taken by the fan and hot air is spit right out of the case through the rear. Hot air doesn't remain in the case)

Good for the rest ;)

u/Fruitlessdog · 3 pointsr/Amd

Freesync is marginally more expensive than standard panels, it's just up to the manufacturer to set up Freesync into the monitor. Here's a $122, 22', 1080p, 75Hz monitor that has freesync (48hz-75hz range):

https://www.amazon.com/AOC-G2260VWQ6-Gaming-Monitor-Black/dp/B0158L13M4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1480820821&sr=8-1&keywords=AOC+G2260VWQ6

At this moment it is out of stock, but you can probably find it on other sites too. Another one is this $149, 24', 1080p, 75Hz monitor that also has freesync (48hz-75hz range), and this one is in stock on amazon with a used one going for $100:

https://www.amazon.com/ViewSonic-VX2457-MHD-DisplayPort-FreeSync-Technology/dp/B018MYTH9U

(Edit: both are TN panels, in case you're wondering)

Unfortunately, I couldn't find a sub-$100 monitor. My guess is it's usually not worth it to the manufacturers to implement Freesync in anything less than 1080p/75hz. Also, these monitors don't have a very big Freesync range to work with, so my theoretical 40hz situation would only work on more expensive monitors, which in their case has Low-Frequency compensation to alleviate this problem, which isn't a big issue because they usually have extremely high refresh rates already. I heard you can overclock the monitor to increase freesync range to 40 Hz, but I don't know how to do that.

Good luck with your purchases! I'm afraid the best monitor deals have come and gone with Black Friday, where I'm pretty sure we could have bought a $60 1080p monitor.

This is a decent one. Check the reviews out. Also this is a cheap monitor with AMD's freesync(if you have an amd card that supports it) Either way i'd go with my first pick.

Im planning to buy a monitor but cant decide whether to buy a 60hz monitor or a 75hz monitor...is the 15hz really noticeable? My budget is around $150-$200 so i cant really opt for a 144hz monitor. Any suggestions? Also wouldn't mind good colour.

Ps: is this any good? I have a 1050 ti right now but im going to upgrade to a better amd card in the future

Two options: slightly higher refresh rate with https://www.amazon.com/ViewSonic-VX2457-MHD-FreeSync-Monitor-DisplayPort/dp/B018MYTH9U, or having better colors and viewing angles with an IPS panel, like https://www.amazon.com/Dell-SE2416HX-Screen-LED-Lit-Monitor/dp/B01717TLMM.

What about this Sceptre C248B-144R?

The only ViewSonic in my price range is this one. Only 75Hz, but otherwise seems fine.

> Sorry I haven't conducted any surveys?

Steam hardware survey is a bit 'finicky'. Some people are/were reporting that they also haven't seen anything related to it on their PC. It looks like this pop-up window. There were also rumors that it picks people randomly and even that it mainly pops-up once a person mounts a new Nvidia GPU in their system and starts steam. It's all faint rumors though. There were also those shenanigans not so long ago with PUBG being popular in chinese cyber cafes and for some reason it was overcounting a lot of different users who were logging on the same (mostly nvidia/intel based) systems: Link. AFAIK valve did a roll back with some fixes and everything went back to normal.

> I was simply saying that the popularity of these cards is because they're gpus that folks don't have to mess around with and upgrade anything else.

I understand that and agree, but here's what i meant - let's take a look at that steam hardware survey again - 'GPU share' tab:

  • On the 2nd place we have 1050 Ti with a share of 9.70%

  • On the 3rd place we have 1050 with a share of 5.13%

  • On the 6th place we have 750 Ti with a share of 3.84%

All those cards can be powered only from a PCI-E slot. Where i'm going with this? As we know - AMD also offers a low-end Polaris single slot/PCI-E only powered card - RX 460/560 class. It's around ~35% faster than 750ti and is basically in the territory of (similarly priced) ~1050's performance - as we can see here on the 'Relative Performance' graph. 1050Ti is obviously above all of them. Since RX 460/560 offers similar to 1050 performance then it should be around or at least not that far off 1050 in 'gpu share' at steam hardware survey right?

Quick check and it shows that RX 460 has a share of 0.43% while RX 560 is at 0.25%. Since with those PCI-E powered cards it's as you said "they're gpus that folks don't have to mess around with and upgrade anything else" - if those RX 460/560 cards were known by that group of budget gamers which are using or simply prefer PCI-E powered GPUs then those cards should have a lot higher share right? (provided that there's no brand bias) Especially when they can be paired with some cheap freesync monitor which as we know actually makes the biggest difference in budget tier since it's not uncommon for people with those low-end cards to fiddle around with graphical settings in games to get a good balance between decent FPS values and visuals. So generally RX 460/560 + freesync monitor (not even talking about hardware lvl DX12/Vulkan) is a lot more beneficial for an average gamer on a budget than having a 1050 alone (since G-Sync monitors are expensive), because freesync causes that gameplay still feels smooth even when fps are dropping noticeably below that 60fps mark (which is to be expected on low-end cards - those fps drops).

That share of RX 460/560 simply indicates that majority of budget gamers have no idea about those decent low-end RX cards and freesync. This is an interesting showcase of how big Nvidia's mindshare is in the "average gamer that just follows a brand name" community. That's the thing me, user i originally replied to - /u/pls_halp_cri and the majority of users in this 'branch' of comments are pointing out.

Again, the main reason i highlighted in my previous post those few responses from user /u/luapzurc is, because they're disregarding the power of mindshare (and you sir /u/Microsoft_Gerald - agreed with them ;). People going with 1050Ti over rx 470/570 is not only, because of "no additional power from the PSU needed". (I'm not counting here the group with (going for) cheap prebuilds with 1050's and 1050Ti's.)

After following various PC-related subs and other parts of the internet dedicated to PC gaming for quite some time now - it isn't really that hard to notice a lot of misinformed/overconfident (ala "i'm always right") people going for 1050Ti over rx470 (with a focus on raw gaming performance) as their upgrade (especially as it was during the first several months after the release of those 2 cards) - mainly, because "it's Nvidia bro, AMD drivers suck", or "Nvidia is always faster and cooler".

I mean, this whole brand loyalty in 'uninformed mainstream gamer' community is quite often on a such high levels that there are literally people saying that Ryzen is so behind intel that it's basically another FX series, claiming that there's 25% IPC difference between them, people saying "why should i even bother with an AMD card when i want to game?", fanboys literally wanting intel's and nvidia's monopoly and "AMD should just go bankrupt finally, who needs them" and people still buying 750Ti's over similarly priced RX 460/560's for budget (and older core 2 quad, 1st-3rd gen i5 based) PC's without even knowing that those RX's are ~35% faster (there's no excuse other than Nvidia's mindshare when all those cards are only PCI-E powered). Those examples i listed are what i personally noticed.

    Regards and peace :)

I am looking to pull the plug on a budget monitor. I've done way too much research and purchasing a 1440p/144hz monitor is not in the cards right now although I am looking to get one in the future and this purchase would be my second non-gaming monitor. Can someone let me know if it matters too much on these two choices?

ASUS VG245H

Viewsonic VX2457-MHD

Both of these have Freesync and should work well with the Radeon RX 580 I am purchasing.

Is there anything that I am overlooking that makes one of these an automatic purchase over the other?

My primary focus for this will be gaming most likely at 1080p / 60fps for the time being.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I want to have a good night sleep tonight.

Thanks!

Even ignoring the X3 450 (which I only bought because I assumed "tri-core" was better than "dual core", at the time), I'm still floored at the G4560 difference over my FX-8320. I guess I should really keep up with computer component news more often so I know what to buy.

On that topic, for someone who knows more than the average consumer but not as much as he'd like to, how do I go about narrowing down a new CPU? The website you linked shows a clear winner in the G4560, but the website I've always used shows the FX-8320 has a much better overall benchmark score. What am I supposed to be specifically looking for in gaming-quality CPUs if those benchmarks oppose each other?

Anyway, my cousin is looking up to me to help him, so I just wanted to thank you for all of your assistance. I think I might even switch my own build to Intel after the new AMD chips come out. All except the GPU, that is. Finally got myself a 1080p monitor and it has FreeSync, so that should be handy when I upgrade the GPU.

Right well if I stick with that graphics card how about I change the monitor from the LG one on my Amazon wishlist to this one what do you think as this one has a display port and the LG does not have one of those, and that way I can connect the pc to the monitor using display port cable and connect the pc to my TV using a hdmi cable and do things that way, and does display port carry both a video and audio signal or is it like dvi and can only carry a video signal?

Otherwise I could just stick with the LG monitor which has better reviews and use a display port to hdmi cable from pc to the monitor

Thank you

I wouldn't be so sure with dropping the ssd because they are so nice. However, you can upgrade to an 8 gb version on the rx480 gpu for 30$ more which is a good future proofing upgrade as some newer games take increasingly more vram. For a monitor that takes advantage of the gpu, I would suggest one with freesync, an amd specific monitor "type?" that helps reduce screen tearing for amd cards. Amd cards are generally always good value, so buying an amd favored monitor shouldn't be a big concern. Here is one that I found which is cheaper and enables you to upgrade the graphics card. It's only up to 75hz instead if 144 but I personally would be able to deal with thay, your choice: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B018MYTH9U/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1467121459&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=viewsonic+vx2457-mhd&dpPl=1&dpID=41sLDEkoXWL&ref=plSrch

Do you know any good 60hz 1080p 24" monitors? Freesync is still worth it for 60hz right?

This brand seems to be in the top of searches, but there are complaints that the color quality is bad, so I'm not sure.

Thanks for the reply btw

Don't know the specs for the monitor you currently have but I found this one on Amazon for 140. It has a max Refreash rate of 75Hz so that might be a negative.

Trying to choose a Freesync monitor to go with my RX470. Are there any models that offer better value than the Viewsonic VX line? (Stuff like larger refresh range or better resolution for a similar price). I don't think I want to go bigger than 24" or so because any bigger starts to look blurry at 1080p IMO.

u/bakedchickenisbae · 1 pointr/buildapc

Awesome. Thank you so much. I was mostly looking for monitors with display ports (I've never heard of display port before, just dvi / vga / hdmi). Swapping both to https://www.amazon.com/ViewSonic-XG2401-FreeSync-Monitor-DisplayPort/dp/B018MYTH9U?th=1 made it much cheaper.

I'll drop the fans. I will get either the Noctua D14 / D15 (Probably the D15 since it's 10$ more).

For a cheaper motherboard, I'm looking between https://pcpartpicker.com/product/8q38TW/gigabyte-motherboard-gaz170xpsli and https://pcpartpicker.com/product/FzGj4D/asrock-b250-pro4-atx-lga1151-motherboard-b250-pro4 unless I should go even cheaper or they're both bad.

With all the changes and using the asrock board, I am looking at $1664.43, so thank you a lot!

I'd say fourth option if you can swing $20 more. It is bigger, has Freesync, and has a 75 Hz refresh rate.

u/Snorkel25 · 1 pointr/buildapc

Both from amazon (their return policy on monitors is great)

Option 1 $150 1080p 24" up to 75 hz refresh rate, 2ms response time. Downside, thicker bezl and TN panel.

Option 2 $200 24" 144Hz 1ms IPS panel. This is the one I would recommend but its obviously a little bit more.

You can also just get a monitor that doesnt have freesync. If you're buying 1080p though I would not get anything alrger than a 24" as bigger monitors just stretch the pixels more and an image on say a 27" will look worse at the same distance as an image on a 24" if both are at 1080p

ASUS VS239H-P

or

ViewSonic VX2457-MHD

Basically it's a toss-up here between Freesync and IPS. The only IPS monitors with Freesync are 1440p which is way more than I'm looking to spend. I guess the question is, will I notice that much of a benefit with Freesync in the 30-75hz range that the Viewsonic will support - or will the IPS display completely blow the non-IPS display out of the water in terms of picture quality.

I don't play any twitchy games so I don't care about higher refresh rates, just looking for something that looks pretty.

u/berrymunch · 1 pointr/buildapc

I'm a bit of a noob, but I can at least offer a small bit of advice. Look into getting a freesync monitor like this one if you can afford it and if you're definitely getting the RX 480. (I see that you're in Canada, so you probably can't buy from that link, but this monitor is still a good example.) Most AMD graphics cards can fully utilize the freesync technology, which makes the the refresh rate really smooth. That monitor also has some cool stuff like black stabilization and a 2ms response time. (as opposed to your monitor's 8ms), all of which will contribute towards a more refined gaming experience overall, which I assume is what you're aiming for.

u/_Primeey · 1 pointr/Windows10

Hate to break it to you: Freesync and g-sync monitors can be obtained for a lot less than $600 (There's one on amazon for $140) and so can GPUs that provide above 60 fps

u/myteks · 1 pointr/buildapc

I'm looking to upgrade my monitor. I prefer high FPS gaming + very high/ultra graphics settings. I was considering either the ViewSonic VX2457-MHD ($129), or the AOC G2460PF ($209.99) because of their Freesync feature. However, I would like to know if you all could recommend any other great 1080p displays with Freesync preferably. Also, I know I want a > 60 Hz monitor. The ViewSonic is a 75Hz, and the AOC is a 144Hz. Any help with what refresh rate I should pick would be appreciated.

My current rig:

  • CPU: i5-4590
  • GPU: XFX R9 290 DD (not overclocked)

I'm looking at that AOC monitor as well right now, but most people seem to say this ViewSonic one is better. Definitely want FreeSync as it's going to be a huge help, but if youre mainly playing Dota, Overwatch and WoW I don't think FreeSync would benefit you much as it's mostly for heavier games when FPS fluctuates.

Got everything except the second monitor. Imo, it's a lot more worth it to have one nice monitor to take the full potential of a build then to get 2 monitors both not really complimenting the setup as well. Trust me, having a 144hz monitor is very much worth it compared to 60 hz, you can do some research on 144hz vs. 60hz online, everyone says the same. I also included an SSD that you could put Windows on and some other games to load up faster. I know some people don't really care about having things load up lightning fast, they just need games and stuff to run well so if you don't care for load times you can get rid of the SSD and replace the monitor with two of these: https://www.amazon.com/ViewSonic-VX2457-MHD-FreeSync-Monitor-DisplayPort/dp/B018MYTH9U/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1485843368&sr=1-1&keywords=freesync+monitor
