Get yourself a little 5.8GHz wireless camera and a 5.8 wrist monitor and have easy visual feedback too!
Edit: Seriously though. That camera combo runs on 5 volts, so I'd grab a 5V step down regulator and put the camera right on the print head.
So i actually went with this. It's a little gimmicky but it works all in one.
