I know...

"This isn't global, it's only happening in Zimbabwe"

"White people are oppressing POC all around the world."

"Journalists don't present facts, I need textbook academia to accept this"

Etc.

Yeah, SJWs are like a wall of idiocy that cannot be argued with. But the reality is, you let them back themselves into a corner, and that's actually quite rewarding.

SJW: "I need more academic responses"

"These are academic, as this has been researched and the sources for their data is cited"

SJW: "No they aren't. The Telegraph is a news outlet. Journalists sensationalise"

"Okay, sure. So what would you consider academic?"

SJW: "I'd like to see a textbook written on this, by someone with a PhD"

"Of course. What about Racism: Stories from South Africa (Apartheid South Africa Book 2) by Oliver Lawrence PhD?"

SJW: "Ugh, I said academia that probes it's a global issue. This is isolated"

"Okay, sure. How about Racism and apartheid in southern Africa: Rhodesia : a book of Data? This was also published by the UN, who wouldn't bother doing so if it wasn't a" global" issue"

Etc etc.

I mean, you're right - they'll fight to the death and it will always end with something hyperbolic like "you're oppressing my freedom of speech and you're oppressing POC by making out like white people are suffering" or some other BS.

But at least you can make them work for it and look like a dick in the process.

Yes, it is rare for professors to sue students for discrimination as a way of forcing them to knuckle under to the professor's views. It is not surprising that Kimball would highlight this, as part of his career is made on going after "Liberals" in colleges. Kimball isn't so bad though, because he seems not to have the ideological fervor that David Horowitz has. He's clearly a conservative, but doesn't seem to have let the worst of the neo-con venom enter into the way he deals with the world.

Nevertheless, this sort of behaviour in the classroom is quite frequent in literature programs. When talking to students, I definitely get the impression that frequently what happens that there is a political position presented as the "Truth" and that questioning of this truth is not allowed — questioning of truth is to be directed at other people's ideas, not the ideas of the professor who behaves this way.

Frequently this is the case because the ideas, which are presented is a barely coherent and polysyllabic manner, sound pretty silly when a student summarizes them in clear language and starts asking questions. The professor will naturally feel that the ideas are being distorted when they are being paraphrased in this way, and then will try anything to prevent the apparent "twisting" of the subtleties of their thought.

It is a shame because the students deserve better in most cases.

I would check if his school provides a stethoscope. Mine did. A lot of my friends got secondary stethoscope but it just sits in their closet.
As stupid as this sounds - it's the little things that are appreciated
If you wanna do a basket of small things

  • find out what kind of pens they use and get a pack. (Make sure you know what weight they use.
  • Also if they uses highlighters get those for them
  • ear plugs - even if they don't think they'll use it. They will.
These are the ones I use. Macks Pillow Soft Silicone Earplugs Value Pack, 6-Count (Pack of 2) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004CKCX9K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_heqpybQCQH9Q6

  • voucher for a massage because sitting for that many hours HURTS

    Hope that helps! And congrats!

Don't be so quick with the downvotes. The Amazon description reads like another hokey exposé linking us to ancient aliens or Renaissance-era cults. However, once you get past that pretension, this book is a surprisingly frank discussion of many problems of modern Lodge culture.

I read this book that quickly told me what I needed to worry about for transferring to a different college.

https://www.amazon.com/Kuai-University-Transfer-Guide-Guides-ebook/dp/B01HW7P1RA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1467670663&sr=8-2&keywords=university+transfer+guide#navbar

The author mentions that the most important critera is your gpa since that will be universally relevant to every university you're trying to transfer to. They mention stuff like SAT / ACT, but they said it's really dependent on the college. There's more info in the book about transferring than I can type though.

Geoff Petty has 26 or so pages - a chapter - on classroom management. In fact, the chapter is called classroom management:

-->https://www.amazon.co.uk/Teaching-Today-Practical-Guide-Geoff/dp/1408523140/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1511295144&sr=8-4&keywords=geoff+petty+teaching+today

that's a great read and very accessible. Also has a chapter on motivation.

The two following books are less accessible because they work on the premise of presenting use cases and using reflection to establish the cause and action plan to help the problem at hand (the first book deals with motivation);

-->https://www.amazon.co.uk/Managing-Behaviour-Motivating-Students-Education/dp/1903300495/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1511295283&sr=1-1&keywords=9781903300497

Edit: Petty also has a chapter on discipline.

I just published my first book - How to PhD: The Graduate School Handbook. It is 99 cents for the Kindle and 8.99 for the paperback.

https://www.amazon.com/How-PhD-Graduate-School-Handbook-ebook-dp-B07WSTLNRW/dp/B07WSTLNRW/ref=mt_kindle?_encoding=UTF8&me=&qid=1566946682

What is How to PhD?

--Graduate school handbook
--Easy to read
--To the point
--Self-help book
--Everything you need to know

Includes the below-listed and more:

--Sample Statement of Purpose from a successful graduate school application
--Sample advisor breakup email (for when you need to switch research groups)
--Seven benefits you can leverage as a teaching assistant
--Complete steps for passing the "prelim" or candidacy exam
--Ten ways to improve your talks
--Complete steps for publishing your research in a top journal
--The four types of journal papers you can contribute to in graduate school
--Reasons why graduating is hard and how to tackle each situation
--The four steps for guaranteed and speedy graduation

While every PhD is unique, each one is a journey filled with challenge and struggle. How to PhD: The Graduate School Handbook is the first book of a series and also the first of its kind. It is a book filled with everything I wish I had known before starting graduate school.

Whether you are considering getting a PhD or have already started, this book is for you as it takes you through all the stages of getting the degree. It is complete with everything from how to get into graduate school to how to actually finish successfully.

Every chapter in this self-help book is meant to tackle a specific problem in your graduate school career. It all culminates in the most important chapter “Endgame” where I spell out how you can successfully wrap up your PhD. Here, I write about the FOUR STEPS that you can take for guaranteed and speedy graduation. Success is about knowing what it is going to take and this book will tell you just that.

The How to PhD book also includes excerpts from my next book, specifically on the following topics:

--To postdoc or not to postdoc, that is the tension
--Job Search: Why adding value is the best thing to do

Doing a PhD can make one feel isolated and lead to mental health problems. This is why How to PhD exists. My goal is to provide community, support, and actionable steps to help students succeed in PhD programs and overcome the challenges of academia.

It might sound ridiculous, but I recommend you watch the episode of the Tim Ferriss Experiment in which he learns to speak Tagalog very quickly.

There's a lot of good information there that also pertains to the question you're asking.

This is actually complicated stuff.

When discussing the effects of fast twitch muscle fiber, that gets into an area of biology that I'm not an expert in. I don't have a good reference, but I bet your local community college could give you some good places to start researching.

I'm studying for Server+ and contemplating taking the 70-640 exam.

Here's what I've been doing:

  • CBT Nugget video study
  • Reading Server plus quick guide book. This one by Preplogic.
  • And just for the hell of it, I set up a few instances of Server 2008 on VM and am setting up an AD DS and DNS server on one, Exchange and IIS on the other. Eventually I'll probably set up a third and try to configure it as a failover, not that I'll need that with what I'm doing, but it can't hurt.

I hope we do some Rossetti, now or later. I'd forgotten how much I liked "Goblin Market" until you quoted it to me the other day.

I found this book I've been meaning to mention to you: A Guide to the Classical Education You Never Had. I've got a library copy now. Not sure how useful it is and I'm still trying to decide whether I need to own it, but it's got some good curricula: Fiction, Autobiography, Drama, Poetry, History, and Science. Its tips on how to absorb and analyze information have really been working for me with To the Lighthouse, and I plan to use them for Metamorphoses. A couple weird things, like for autobiography, Mein Kampf makes the list (side-eyeing that one), but I can already see how I'd switch the lists around to suit myself.
