I got my 99 SH about 8 months ago, it was over all in fantastic shape, here's what I've done to keep it moving forward.

  1. The suspension was probably the original suspension. I got new struts.
(I put 'stock' ones on, but I bought a full set of KONI Yellow's, but the mechanic i took the car too wouldn't put them on, and didn't give me a good reason, I think he was just lazy.
I'm going to put it in the shop in September for a full suspension redo, or as much as needed, control arms, ball joints, etc... I found a classic japanese mechanic in my area that I feel will do a good job.
  2. I had to get new brake pads and rotors also, cause they were VERY old - I got these : https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AGBTCQK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
  3. as stated in another comment here, get all the fluids changed, change the fluid filters, use higher quality oils. And stay on top of the oil level ... My car burns oil... change the air filters. Use premium grade fuel.
  4. Beyond that, you are dealing with a 20 year old car, so some of the performance aspects may have degraded beyond a point of "basic" maintenance making it back to tip top shape, but, assuming things are in good order, you're going to have a lot of fun and really enjoy it.

Even with the very basic repairs I've done, the car feels fantastic and drives really well.

It's a honda, so assuming the drive train is solid, and you stay on top of the maintenance, it's going to last a really long time.

    Enjoy!

As an aside, there's a TON of good resources in the sidebar of this subreddit, but also, look up the Honda Prelude facebook groups. There's A LOT of activity over there, super friendly people.

Might consider Max brake kits if you're looking to replace pads/rotors on a budget. I've only heard good things, and plan to get a kit for myself soon.

It's not that hard honestly.

I bought a kit that includes most of what I needed (Brush & paint, caliper cleaner, tape, etc)

Before doing that, I used a metal brush with compressed air to clean most of the rust and dirt, then I used the caliper cleaner in the box kit and painted it with the application brush. You just follow the instructions on the box, really.

I lifted the car and had fun for a good two hours

Kit I bought and recommend : http://www.amazon.com/Dupli-Color-BCP400-Red-Brake-Caliper/dp/B000B6AF80/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1462380278&sr=8-1&keywords=duplicolor+caliper+paint+kit

That looks waaay to consistent to be spray paint... Those look identical to a set of Hart Rotors - they look shiny in the images but come flat black. I bought a set not too long ago and they look just like this. The black coating wears away once they're bedded.

> the hubs stay brown forever. :(

I've had good results with plated rotors like these :

https://www.amazon.com/Power-JBR1394EVC-Evolution-Geomet-Coated-Brake/dp/B07CPGCKRS

The braking surface wears off obviously but the hub and outer rim stay uncorroded (hub stays better for longer, obviously)

These are the ones I got a month ago and replaced due the stock ones warping. No longer have the problem but not really sure how much better they are since I drive mostly highway at night and don't need to hard stop. I guess any new pads and rotor will be better than the ones you have on right now.

Rockauto.com yes do the pair. When's the last time you did your fronts? Might as well just do all 4, it's really easy to do yourself, just need something to clamp the caliper down to replace the pads. You can "rent" tools for free at auto parts stores, which they should have a caliper clamp.

Here's the rear set for $70 https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/honda,2009,accord,2.4l+l4,1443201,brake+&+wheel+hub,rotor+&+brake+pad+kit,13824 that's for the 4cylinder, not sure if it's the same for the V6. This is the set I had on my 2008 Coupe https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N5OBDJD/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_.FBaBbP5K6579 they stop and look great, but the front pads squealed a little bit after a month. If you have a problem with that just get some quieter pads.

And high temp ceramic paint for the calipers. The outside of the calipers and the non braking portion of the rotor that touches the wheel were rusty so we replaced the rotors, sanded and painted the caliper and replaced the pads. Much stronger braking and we did all the work ourselves so the total cost was maybe $150

Thanks for the clarification! I have an 01 and just did the tundra swap a few weeks ago, didn’t remember if there was a difference between the years.

PS if anyone is reading this, here is the best deal for the tundra swap kit, $180 with everything you need for the biggest tundra calipers. Put over 5k miles on this kit so far and everything is great

Yup. This is a job that's worth doing yourself if youre even a bit mechanically inclined. It's really not that hard and you can figure it out by watching youtube videos. A pro can do it in under an hour but give yourself half a day to take it slow and do it right the first time.

Best way to save money is not to give it away to someone for something you can do yourself.

ps. Check the cost of new rotors before you resurface the old ones. It's often so close in cost (EXCEPT at the dealers parts price) that's its faster and easier to get new rotors. Want them super cheap? Order on Amazon

[FULL KIT]PowerSport Black... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017WPVBP8?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I have had this brake kit on my Camaro since October and had zero issues. They were a great value and the zinc coating has kept the rotors clean and black everywhere the pad doesn’t touch. I don’t know whether it voids the warranty but doing brake work shouldn’t do that in a rational world, theoretically anyway ;)

You don't have to buy a kit, you can just buy the rotors and get the brakes from Auto Zone for instance. I understand wanting everything all together, I did my brakes on my own for the first time this summer. I'm just putting it out there.

If you do get the kit you listed make sure you follow the break-in instructions to the letter. They'll whistle if you don't. And unless you are doing it for looks or performance I wouldn't get drilled rotors. they are really easy to warp.

u/doubleD · 1 pointr/Nissan

Might I recommend this kit from Duplicolor. Take the brakes off and do 4 coats. Makes a great difference.

I got these, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BVR934C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_467zDbNKJF2JC

But had to contact them to get them swapped to the made in Japan ones which are $15 cheaper. No squeeking I had to buy brake part lube tho as it wasn't included.

Edit: sorry about formatting on mobile.

Could you get the same exact car you have now for $3k? If not, then it's better to pay that and keep the car.

> get the exterior damage fixed

If it's cosmetic you could consider not getting it fixed, even if you do file an insurance claim.

> new brakes & tires to pass inspection, labor & sales tax is $3000

Brakes and tires alone should be under $1000. You can get tires for under $100 each. You can get a full brake set for under $200 (but you'll pay double that in a shop) and that is about 2-3 hours labor. I wouldn't factor this into your decision to purchase because you may have to spend this money even if you get a different car. All cars require maintenance.

Yeah got these on Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07XMH91B7/ref=cm_sw_r_fm_apa_i_4uQ3DbR9T3SX8

Hopefully they'll perform at least as well as the stock brake system, guess we'll see
