Quick link and special pliers make it a breeze. Plus I usually remove the wheels for cleaning as well - got myself a bike repair stand and now everything is so much easier.

I would skip the park tool kit. They make really nice tools, but for things like screwdrivers and hex keys they are insanely overpriced. Whenever you need to do maintenance just figure out what you'll need and buy those tools from them. I do all the work on my bike and haven't spent 380$ on tools. The main ones would be a pedal wrench (can grind down a normal wrench if your cheap), cassette tool, chain whip (old chain and vice grips if your cheap), hex keys, grease, bottom bracket wrench or tool, crank puller.

As for the stand park makes nice professional stands but their portable ones are just ok. Feedback sports has a pretty good following for around the same price. http://www.amazon.com/Feedback-Sports-Elite-Repair-Stand/dp/B001CSPTSC Look at some of the cheaper ones and see if you dont need all the features.

No bike maintenance is really that hard. The first time you do any of it you will be reading and rereading instructions from either a book or online on how to do it. Once you've done it the next time will just be easier and quicker.

I have one. It works great and you can fold it up and store it or take it with you. I got mine on Amazon, but the price is higher than when I got mine.

I'll add that you don't have to spend $200+ dollars on a bike stand, either. This one is similar to the one Aldi sells and it is fine. Our co-op usually waits until the Aldi ones go on clearance for $20 and buy all of em for people to have cheap beginner stands.

I purchased the "Park Tool Deluxe Wall Mount Repair Stand - PRS-4W" about 6 years ago, and have been happy with it since. It's never let me down. I'd absolutely buy it again.

While it's wall mount, I expect the similar bench mount option to be of equal quality.

Park Tool PCS-9. The PCS-10 model has a quick-release cam that makes clamping the bike quicker and easier.

Feedback Sports is the also well-known alternative.

Wood will not be a good material for this, and you are going to have to have metal hardware fabrication skills if you're intending to create something that will actually clamp to the bike and support its weight, rather than it hanging on something. There are PVC DIY ones that can be done, but they're a hassle to store and don't let you make adjustments like a true stand would.

Edit: It could certainly be done, but the thickness of the wood would get a rid ridiculous. I wouldn't want to have to create a telescopic, leg-locking tripod, myself, haha.

i have this one - it's simple, reliable, and well built, but it also has some major disadvantages: it doesn't accept larger hubs (i had to build some "extensions" for a 148 hub, for example) and it won't take 29" wheels.

This is the one that I've been using for almost two years now. The footprint is a bit bigger than I'd like but overall it's good. I've been able to do routine bike maintenance on it, and fork and shock swaps on it with no problems. I haven't had anything break on me yet, and it's sturdy enough to hold my 40lb 29er bike. I like the rotating arm with the 'teeth', and the tray and handlebar holder has definitely come in handy.

I've been using one of these cheap stands for a while now based on a recommendation in this subreddit and it's served me well so far. It's very solid, folds up neatly and compactly and I was pleasantly surprised with it considering the price. Check out the Amazon reviews for other verdicts!

I got this one for $30 on Amazon. It's wall-mounted, which is perfect for my particular situation, but I've never found it to be lacking.

Just post here mostly. And thank you!

I got this stand clamp and made a custom 2x6 steel tubing that mounts in the garage rafters and has this park tool clamp attached. When it’s not in use I can partially unbolt and swing it up and out of the way.

I wasn’t happy with any other stands available and I didn’t want to lose floor space to a stand when not in use ( as with the high dollar park stands) The one I’ve put together is very sturdy and holds the bike without issues.

Just got this as an easter present, way nicer than I thought it'd be. https://www.amazon.com/VENZO-Aluminium-Workstand-Bicycle-Repair/dp/B00FLU61Z2 went in sale for $80. Super solid, can rotate, easily adjustable, and clamps on top tube so I can use it on my bike with a thick aero seat post too

I think overall the bike hand stuff is slowly increasing the price. It is hard to say what cheap stand will be good and which ones are just complete junk. Most of my tools are bike hand so I would trust them enough to give it a shot. Another option would be to get a work bench mount

In some Facebook group the other day someone asked just this and lots of people were gushing over this Songmics stand, legs fold in like a tripod when you aren't using it. Might be worth a look. The legs don't look short when it's in use, but you can throw it in a closet when you're done with it.

I would definitely get a repair stand before a truing stand. Your bike frame and brakes make a decent truing stand in a pinch. If you get a repair stand, make sure it's one like this and not one like this. The latter supports the bike via the bottom bracket and downtube and interferes with brake and derailleur cables, making them difficult to adjust.

With regard to other tools, I think 802bikeguy has a pretty comprehensive list.

+1 on the Venzo. I've had mine a couple years and use it a couple times a week (I have become the neighborhood bike mechanic). I like it because it is 90% metal. Pretty sturdy and the tool tray is awesome.

u/the_last_carfighter · 1 pointr/bicycling

Well that is a heck of a deal, obviously you won't want to clamp a carbon frame or thin walled aluminum in it. Having said that you could add some dense foam to the clamp. Also the way the bike is supposed to be mounted on it, just behind the bottom bracket, means it may not be compatible with all frames.

Edit: for a few more bucks this looks much better to me: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FK792LQ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3ACUPJ4C2HX16

I agree that feedback makes some great stuff. I have the slightly cheaper one, and I really like it.

u/Statuethisisme · 1 pointr/bicycling

You could buy cheap like this or expensive like this and make a bracket to attach to the roof racks. There are quite a few of these wall/bench mount styles available, at multiple price/quality points.

u/ZarrenR · 1 pointr/cycling

I have this Feedback Sports repair stand. It’s definitely more expensive but I have no complaints about it in the year I’ve owned it.

u/reaubhat · 1 pointr/bicycling

I have this Topeak stand and love it! I live in a smallish apartment, so the stand is generally stored in my closet - it's easy to deploy and solid to use. It even comes with a nice travel-bag.
