Honestly if you ship enough orders, it's going to happen at some point. I wouldn't spend more money on heavier-duty boxes, personally. 1 out of 20 is not bad at all for a fragile item, and that one was likely just a fluke.

I ship mugs in standard cardboard boxes (not smash-proof ones like you use), wrapped securely in a few layers bubble wrap. One key is to use a slightly larger box than you need (I like these 7"x6"x6" boxes), because if it's packed tightly in a box only slightly larger than the mug, it's actually more likely to break. I like to have a little room around the bubble wrapped mug to stuff some kraft paper.

You will be fine. I do this about 3-4 times a year with no issues at PHL. Just brought back 18 bottles from Australia and NZ about 2 days ago with zero issues.

Please, please, please make sure you pack it in actual wine shipper cases and not just throw it in your luggage. If it breaks you are not only ruining your property, but putting others at risk. Something like this works great, but you can find them cheaper at bottle shops:

We were low on cartons at one point, so I just bought a 140ct box of egg cartons on Amazon for $45 and now there's no problem. I let my kids watercolor the carton first before we give them out.

I put it within a cardboard box surrounded by packing foam or tissue paper, then put the box in a black poly mailer sleeve (and put the shipping label on the poly mailer.) The boxes I use are sometimes not large enough for a shipping label, hence the sleeve.

EDIT:
I use cardboard boxes like this and I use these poly mailers. I like the boxes because they are sturdier and have a more quality look/feel, and the poly mailers are unique looking and extremely economical in terms of price. They are thinner than a lot of other poly mailers but since I pack everything in boxes that isn't an issue for me.

I also print out my invoice and put it inside of a decorative #10 envelope with my logo printed on it, and my invoice always has a hand-written note on it. I put that in the poly mailer next to the box. So when my customer opens the mailer, he or she can either open up the invoice and see my note or open up the box to get to the (wrapped) goodies. I also make sure to put a little free gift with a thank you sticker in each order, usually tucked on top of the wrapped up item within the box.

Between shipping, packing, and invoice materials it comes out to about $1.25 an order (I buy in bulk so that helps)...all costs passed along to my customers in the handling and shipping fees.

Almost anything should work. Cheaper but still strong would be fibreboard: amazon link and I'm sure you can get it at any hardware store. Even cheaper/thinner is chipboard which is pressed cardboard.

If you're even more low-commitment than that and don't care what it looks like in the back or how long it would last, I'm pretty sure any cardboard, flat plastic or any other sturdy flat material would work just fine in a pinch too with some glue or screws.

\>They don't last, finding them is a pain and they're definitely not cheap.

Don't know that that is accurate. I'm moving in a month and I just bought a load of the below. The tartan bags pack up really small and can be kept and the plastic boxes can be re-used for storage going forwards. Only the cardbord boxes are 'single' use, really.

\> Usually I end up taking them to the recycling center and end up paying more for the boxes just to toss them afterwards.

Maybe recycling near you is expensive in which case maybe there is a market, but lots of places it is free, or people will just put them in the trash for no cost.

\> Refubishing - Each box will have to be inspected and cleaned thoroughly before renting out again. One question I have is how would I charge for damaged boxes?

Some amount of damage is going to have to be accepted and inspecting the condition and charging the client is going to take you forever and will just lose you customers. Better to build in some wear and tear to your price and accept some losses over time. Happy customers mean more customers going forwards. Maybe if the boxes are full of shit you can hose them out but you're going to spend a lot of time if you're expecting to fully clean them each time.

One thought I do have is that companies will often rent boxes when moving. The company I work for has moved twice and has rented one ~70 litre box per person for 3-4 days. Might be another avenue to look into.

ORT Boxes (and other identical cardboard boxes)

(The ORT is the odor recognition test required prior to competing in NACSW. The boxes used for this test are all notoriously uniform in color and size, so a small white box like this is sometimes referred to as an ORT box.)

  • The actual boxes used at NACSW ORTs are called "literature mailers", 10"x8"x3" white cardboard boxes with lids. These are available in a couple different sized sets on Amazon; you may have to shop around a little for the best deal.
  • Smaller white boxes are cheaper and easier to store for home use. Avitidi and Box USA both sell lots of choices on Amazon, or you can check your local shipping store.
  • Uline is another great source for large quantities of uniformely sized boxes at a reasonable price.

  • If you live near Baltimore, Maryland, the ABC Box Company sells all sorts of misprinted, secondhand, and overstock boxes dirt cheap. If you only need a bunch of identical boxes, a place like this is a good place to check!
  • This is of questionable legality (not illegal, but it feels weird doin' it), but many USPS shipping boxes are free at the post office. I've seen those triangular media mailer tubes in trial videos before.

Never ever ever ever use the shoe box to ship. You will be hated by everyone. Something like this will fit most shoes up to a size 12 - size 13 box.

If you do want something to keep your physical games in I find that these will hold about 5 games each:

What about a generic laptop mailer box?

For individual books listed In better conditions I like these:

Little pricier than poly mailers w/bubble wrap but I think it lends the appearance of more secure/thoughtfull packaging IMHO. Cheers.

u/clinen11 · 1 pointr/Etsy

I'm unsure how links work here but perhaps something like this?

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HGCR44O/ref=biss_dp_sa1

They have a ton of sizes and come in a 50 pack. Might be something to help keep the item stable and from bending.

u/nathanaccidentally · 1 pointr/vinyl

Here's a mailer similar to the ones I use. You can just add an extra .80 cents to your shipping cost and they won't take a hit on your wallet.

u/issue9mm · 1 pointr/bourbon

Something like this, but suited to exactly that bottle:
https://www.amazon.com/EcoBox-Bottle-Wine-Shipper-Styrofoam/dp/B00KNC3TYE/

Sadly, I just got a bottle saver package that fit that bottle perfectly, but I shipped it away to somebody else in a swap.

Welcome to the party! You can find the Etsy Seller Handbook here: Handbook!

As far as boxes go... I would get USPS Priority Mail (use version 2) FREE boxes for the smaller size clicky but you have to send them priority (always purchase shipping online, it's easy via etsy).

The larger versions could go in something like this: clicky. I've had good luck with Pratt and you could find a size for the smaller woodworking too, I just prefer free boxes if I'm going to be shipping them priority anyways. This allows you to send them through other shipping providers at your leisure.
