You just have to find one labelled as having parking mode (and typically need to make sure it's connected to an always on power source, unless it has a separate battery that can charge while the car is turned on - but idk that I'd trust it to actually be charged if something happened while the car was parked).

There are a few different ways they'll handle this, some will will just constantly record over itself and others will detect motion/an impact and start recording.

I've got a BlackVue brand, has a front and rear and will start recording whenever either of them detect motion or an impact. It was a bit on the expensive side though, around $500. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07C3GNG5K

well worth it, paid for itself in that one incident

OP, where are you located? I'm in So Cal and have an aftermarket radio I installed in my '15 4Runner, but put back the OEM unit when I sold it. I still have the aftermarket unit and all the adapters, harnesses, dash kit, etc... It's just sitting and would be willing to sell the whole package for cheap if you want it. Here's the unit I have](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CPYGH9G/), let me know.

You can get something like this from Amazon : https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-AVH-W4400NEX-Multimedia-Resistive-Touchscreen/dp/B07TM14PP5?th=1&psc=1

I think its a bit pricey since it's from pioneer. It has both Android auto and apple's carplay as far as I can tell. Once u get it you can get it installed easily from many local car electronic centers. They have spacialized electrictions who can install aftermarket infotainment systems. But don't buy their infotainment systems they usually have Chinese stuff which is really bad compared to pioneer and Sony infotainment systems. Hope this help. Feel free to dm me for Locations of car electronic centers where they install aftermarket infotainment systems 😉.

Satelite radio is fun, but not audiophile worthy (you can always get that as an extra option though if you wish). CD's and USB inputs are really the way to go for un-muddled audio sources. I would rather this Kenwood head unit since it is a better price and a better headunit overall. The only downside of Kenwood headunits is the UI is a little slow, but I have a cheaper model of the excelon so this one is probably faster.

Ask the guys at the audio shop what they've got in regards to 4 channel amps and component sets, and listen to their setups to see what you want. There is a link to r/CarAV approved gear in the sidebar so you can get a feel for the prices of some of these things because they vary wildly.

regarding the install: It'll be around 3-4 hours of work at a rate of $70-120 an hour depending on where you go and if you bought the parts from them (they give a discount on labor if you buy gear form them). You'll need a wire harness ($20-50) and a dash kit for your specific vehicle ($40-200 from what I saw from a google search).

Your final price for everything +install will be in the ballpark of $650-1000. This estimate is without the 4 channel, component set, and wiring kit.

I’m going to try this one for current build Universal 3.5 inch Color TFT LCD Car Automobile Monitor for Vehicle Rear View Backup Camera https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074NYHYM4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_i_t-3.AbGH19EX5. As for batteries, there are so many ways to go, and I’m not sure of the best way. I’m going to use a LiPo I have lying around from a bank - 5k or 7k mah. I might even use some 18650 batteries. I am still figuring out a good way for pass through charging though so it will depend on that solution. I’m just figuring things out as I go.

It's actually kinda funny because my dad has an Aliner, super light weight popup camper and also has a rare Saab 9-5 Griffin. He got a tow hitch installed on the Saab and the Aliner has power assisted braking, so the Saab will tow it no problem. But he wanted something more substantial with 4WD because he likes to take the camper out west, and South Dakota mud during heavy rains are no joke.

The camper is only like 1100Lbs, super light, the F150 tows that think as if it was just a Tonka truck. You would never even know it's back there unless you looked in the rearview mirror, haha.

He had this weird system of using these flags on telescoping poles to help him back into the trailer to hook it up, which is when I said screw that and installed a new head unit for him with a little screen and the backup camera. It's super easy to hook up the trailer now. Plus, now he has bluetooth without some stupid cigarette adapter FM modulator doobie.

EDIT: Stereo is this or similar, backup camera is this guy

It depends what you consider cheap, but I've had the older version of this model for around 5 years now, still works great.

Are they about the same in specs? I wonder if newer phones (iphone 11, samsung s10, etc) would have issues with "older" units.

u/Brado_Bear · 1 pointr/audiophile

I had been looking at them earlier this year when my RCA ground fuse blew out, but I’ve fixed it thankfully. Keeping this ancient Kenwood for now.

It’s crucial I have a volume knob, and I like Kenwood, so I was going to go with this before I fixed the fuse.

Crazy how prices have come down. My current radio was over $500 when I bought it...

Throwing out another option for you.

Seeing a lot of double-din and single-din suggestions. Why not both?

In my old truck I wanted a backup cam, but only had a single-din space to work with. Got a pop-up screen head unit and never looked back.

Benefits: You get the single-din storage space that appeals to some, plus you get the same 6.5-7" double-din screen size. On top of that, almost every pop-up unit will have a single-din setup, buttons and lcd display, but also the full-touch screen. Also, if you don't need/want the screen up for a moment, there's a button to reinsert the screen.

I went cheap af and got this BOSS unit, https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IJ1KBEW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and it actually turned out a hell of a lot nicer than I truly expected. It ended up adding watts to each speaker, so sounded louder, and with some eq tweaking, sounded better.

All-in-all, I think this option might be your best overall winner.

Heck, you can even find pop-up CP/AA units out there, like this one; https://smile.amazon.com/Jensen-VX4014-7-Inch-CarPlay-Receiver/dp/B07FMDXZBK/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1?keywords=pop+up+carplay&qid=1569631957&s=electronics&sr=1-1-fkmr1

My issue with that camera is connectivity to the cloud. Other than that it's fine. I put in a 256gb microsd card made for dash cams and professional photographers. I also got the power pack so it would stay on while vehicle is off.

I recently put a Kenwood Excelon DDX9905S into my 2019 Tundra and love it. I went with this model as it has an HD screen that looks beautifully bright and clear. Its last year's model so the price is a good bit lower than this year's, the 9906s, and the only real difference is the newer model gives you wireless CarPlay. I tend to always plug into my car charger anyway, so the draw of wireless wasn't worth the price increase.

Added a ~$50 wiring harness adapter from amazon and kept steering wheel controls, back up camera, and the USB input down below the radio/hvac stack.

Pioneer AVH-1330nex is one of the cheapest options for apple car play if you like that but it’s not cheap in quality. The options for your speakers pair amazing with my subwoofer. You can search around for this on ebay, I got mine brand new for about $250, 6 months ago.

u/Duzao66 · 1 pointr/AndroidAuto

If you have any experience opening phones or notebooks I think you be fine. You'll only need to pay attention to the screen motor and mechanics and attach the wires back together.

is one other single din model.

Other thing you can try: there are some new android head units bigger than 7"...and they are built in a single din chassi and have a screen that swivels... Might be an easier solution

u/MELSU · 1 pointr/cars

Can you not install a double din? What’s underneath/above your single din currently?

An alpine ILX-W650 costs slightly more (263 euros) but would be much more reliable than the off brand Chinese model you have linked.

Edit: your best bet is to just bite the bullet and spend a bit more on a pioneer.

At 377 euros, it’s definitely more expensive than the one you picked out. However, the Pioneer AVH-3300NEX would be reliable for the long term.

>All units with that feature are North of $800 still though.

You can definitely find AA headunits with capacitive touchscreens for well under $800 these days.

Mixed reviews on Amazon.

Most notably is the guy who mentions that the warning screen has to be dismissed by you every single time you start the car. Pioneer's newest line does still have that message, but it dismisses itself after ~10 seconds. Having to hit that button every single time would piss me off.

u/Korbo · 1 pointr/CarAV

You should be able to turn off the noises when you press buttons in a menu, but I guess that's irrelevant if you have other issues with the unit.

I'd recommend this unit. It's under $300, has what he wants, and doesn't have a motorized face that is likely to break at some point down the road.

u/WolfDemon · 1 pointr/funny

so I'm going to replace my nice looking factory unit for this $80 shitty looking piece of junk just so I can use Bluetooth audio in my car? No thanks. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for wireless stuff, but I'm not replacing my factory head unit just for Bluetooth
