cat grass works. I rigged a grow system with just kitchen dishes. I would recommend starting with half of the alloted bag. the 1 bag made more than 9x9" patch of grass. my cat actually couldn't keep up. the rest got bitter and died. 10/10 would do it again.

Checked for more pics and saw your post about him scratching. Cats usually scratch for a few reasons--relieve stress/energy, sharpen claws, or to mark territory. These PetFusion brand cardboard scratchers are kind of expensive, but my cat uses his at least 3-4 times per day. The only time he's tried to scratch the sofa is when I waited way too long to replace his favorite scratcher. Anyway, these are well-reviewed for a reason imo. Cats just really like them. A lot of the reviewers agree that they are furniture savers:

I cut them in half and screw them back together to double their lifespan.

Also, this is a good toy for cats to relieve stress, especially if they like to grab and bite and kick occasionally. This is one of my cat's faves:

Maybe try some new toys?

I've been meaning to make a list of my cats' favorite toys. I have two cats, brother and sister, Millie and Smokey, now about 9 months old.

First, I can't explain it, but this carrot. I bought it on a whim at a pet store because it was on clearance and I thought it kind of looked like the Minecraft carrot and I thought it would be cute to see them playing with it. It comes with separate catnip container and you can fill the carrot with catnip, but I didn't use any. OMG, they go crazy for the thing. They get super possessive of it. If the other cat comes near, they'll growl and run away. Smokey likes to be chased when he has the carrot in his mouth. I lunge like I want to steak his carrot and he runs a few feet away, daring me to try to take it again. Millie will self-play with the carrot, batting it around on our hardwood floors. They've gone through two already. I think it's time to get a third.

Da Bird. It was recommended here and it's awesome. Something about the movement, the twirling, the colors, the noise. They can't ignore this thing. If the feather thing gets destroyed, replacements are available and cheap.

Cat Dancer 101. This is a stiff wire with some cardboard bits on one end. Move it and shake it a bit and I guess it looks like a flying insect. On the plus side, when they catch it, it's fairly easy to get them to release it.

Cat Dancer 301. This is Millie's favorite. She knows where I keep it and "leads" me to it at every opportunity. Like, first thing when I wake up and when I get home from work. It's a short stick with a long strip of fleece material. Wave it as you move in a circle and they're mesmerized. When they catch it, it's a bit difficult to get them to release it.

A bored kitty is a destructive kitty! Figuring out her preferred type of toys (tracks, balls, crinkle, wands, etc) can take a little time, but giving her lots of toys and scratching targets can make a big difference keeping her from destroying your things instead.

Teach her what "no" means, just a stern voice and then redirecting to something good (such as, when she scratches the couch, say no, then put her on the scratching post and praise her there) makes life a lot easier later. "Get down" can be helpful, too, but some cats ignore that one even when they know what it means (looking at you, my fluffy girl!)

Hands are not toys. If she tries to bite or claw your hands, say no, remove them from reach, and replace with a toy. If she, like one of mine, thinks this means hands are an EXTENSION of toys, then you have to say no, remove hands, and walk away or otherwise remove attention. Then give kitty a toy from a distance.

Here are some of my favorite toy options, none are too expensive and they cover some variety so you can learn what kind she likes:

  • toy pack
  • jingle balls
  • and most especially CatIt track (or basically any other CatIt product.)

Also a slightly more expensive one, but the Ripple Rug is hugely popular with all my kitties, they like to burrow in and attack stuff, I can hide toys in there, they pop out the holes and attack each other or wand toys.

Thank you so much for taking them in!

They're fine being inside a room in a house with food, water, toys (you did get them toys, yes?), things to scratch and climb, and protected from the elements. Your health questions/concerns have been covered really well by other posters. If you don't mind, I'll talk about something else.

If you haven't already, go to Walmart, Target, Petco, PetsMart or whatever your moderately-priced local equivalent is and get some cardboard scratchers (horizontal & vertical or inclined), squeaky toys, a cat pole (<$45 @ Walmart, goes from ceiling to floor with 3 shelves) or pay a bit more and get a tower. The towers are good because it gives the cats high places in addition to integrated scratching posts. However, multiple individual scratching posts are also helpful in encouraging the kittens to use them rather than your furniture or carpet. Spreading them around your home may help with this.

Nearly everyone is running some sort of Memorial Day sale right now so the towers may currently be much more reasonably priced. Also looking at some in person (my local Petco had a couple set up), if possible, gives you a better idea regarding their stability. Also recommend Amazon and Wayfair for the towers- just pay attention to the reviews.

You'll need a pet carrier to transport them; again check reviews and get a higher rated one. Because they're so small now, I would personally get a larger carrier capable of transporting all of them together until they reach a combined ~20 pounds or so.

Try to pick up a variety of toys. My cats always loved the little battery operated critters that chirped or squeaked like birds & mice. Catnip mice are almost universally adored. They'll also love chasing after things so try to get a wand toy as well. Just stroll through the pet dept and choose a few.

Your pigs are such adorable little buddies! They look like a reverse Twinkie and an Oreo cookie stuffed with peanut butter. Or maybe I'm just hungry. :)

I think critters secretly laugh at us for spending money on gear for them while they happily play with something free instead. I bought my cat a massage center and she won't even acknowledge it. Cleaned it and covered it in her beloved catnip? Nothing. Brushed it against her so she could see that it felt good...nope, the only 'massage center' she's interested in are my hands (naturally, since I'm quite allergic to her). But the cord that hangs from the windows blinds? Awwwww yessshhh happyfunplaytime!

Here are my kitties! The blonde one is Lyra and the black one is Duke.

This toy is Duke's absolute favorite. He doesn't know how to meow, but he squeaks and screeches whenever I pick it up. He loves to drag it around the house. Sometimes I wake up and he left it for me in the bed, or if he'll drop it on me while I'm on the computer. We have tons of toys and there are others he likes, but he treats that one like it's his safety blankey or something.

Talk to your vet. Sometimes this kind of self-injury is stress related, and given the cat's origins, that's likely. You may be able to get some kind of anti-anxiety meds to use until she stops doing it.

Also, sometimes kittens weaned too young wind up with a sucking habit. Instead of yelling or making noise when she does it, try gently easing her mouth away from the nipple and giving her a teething toy for kittens instead. If she'll suck on that, it might get her to transfer her habit to the toy rather than herself.

A couple of toys to look at:

u/8bitesq · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Lastly, I think that Diablo III ($33.38), the awesome custombizbale mouse ($12.96), the Sony headphones ($15.59), the Nightmare Before Christmas lanyard ($5.98), and these two add-on items - a catnip pepper ($2.99) and these measuring cups ($3.99) - would be cool too!

I’ve got good news and bad news. The good news is it’s been identified as the Fred & Ginger Felt Mouse Cat Toy. The bad news is they’re not made anymore.

I did find some similar fish toys on Amazon but they seem to be smaller.

Bigger and crinkly!

I would get an indoor cat grass planter like this one https://www.amazon.com/Catit-Senses-2-0-Cat-Grass/dp/B015J4I51M grass is actually very good for cats digestion. As for the bolting, I know of people who have had success with this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000A76ZYS/?cv_ct_id=amzn1.idea.ERFFU9PN21D&cv_ct_pg=storefront&cv_ct_wn=aip-storefront&ref=exp_cov_myfosterkittens_dp_vv_d its like an electric fence for dogs but the barrier is the doorway.

u/grinr · 1 pointr/videos

I'm going to brave the downvote storm by being the wet blanket here. You're training your cat to destroy things (that you may not find as funny/cute later.) I would recommend chew toys like this one which will give him/her a great workout while also focusing their behaviors into non-destructive habits. Especially while they're young.

I'll just go back into my box now.

u/Ultracoustic · 1 pointr/cats

Have you tried any interactive, fishing pole type toys? My cat LOVES his Da Bird toy that we purchased for him a few months back. The attachments can be easily replaced are there are many different attachments that you can get. My cat has learned the sound of me opening the closet where I keep his Da Bird and will come running and meow until I get it out to play and he will cry and whine when I stop playing with it too soon.

u/Sylvene · 1 pointr/Pets

Since it's virtually impossible to keep the dog from them, go for the toys that are made of natural ingredients.

Toys like Da Fur Thing - which is made of a scrap of rabbit fur with feathers on the end. Felted wool balls, knitted wool mice.

Link for Da Fur Thing on Amazon

Then there are the battery operated toys that you have to turn on for your cat which will keep them occupied. Of course the dog might get fascinated with it as well.

Like Frolic Cat's toys and there's also a solar powered prism that you hang on your window and it casts rainbows on the floor for your cat to catch.

You could use a Cat Teaser Wand to work them out before sleep. SmartyKat electronic teaser toy might also help with minimal supervision.

These also work well for most kitties:

Hmm, well, just like people, individual cats have different preferences and interests. Definitely get some little mice (or similar-sized toys) that he can bat around. I like to look for sales on the multi-packs at PetSmart for some variety. Some cats like longer toys that they can hold with their front paws and kick with their hind legs. I would also get a long "teaser" type of toy (something like this or this), and a laser pointer is usually a safe bet.

Additionally, while not a toy, something for him to scratch is also pretty important. If you don't have room for a scratching post, there are other options like those refillable corrugated cardboard scratchers.

Congrats on your new kitty, and thank you for adopting from a shelter!!

u/KittyChimera · 1 pointr/Wishlist

I had that problem with Batty. And when his top adult fangs came in, his baby fang were hanging in there with them, so he had a total of 6 fangs for a while. You can try something like this stuffed chewing toy for teething or something like this which is a lot cheaper and is supposed to make their mouth feel better when they chew on it. If you are worried about cords, you can use a bittering spray that makes things taste like they just don't want to eat them.

u/geekynerdgirl · 1 pointr/kittens

We keep these little purple woven sticks with catnip in them for our biter. They're inexpensive and he likes them. If he starts biting hands or whatever, we redirect him with these.

  1. I thought this was a pretty neat bed.

  2. I have this catnip toy on my list for my cat. My dogs got his other toy and took out a rattly thing it had in it. He still loved the toy, but now it has completely disappeared. I think he would like this one, also, he has never tried catnip before.

This is .08 over the limit but I thought I would add it anyway!

here are the cats Im spoiling

Cats have always been special to me, they have this thing about them that makes them amazing. I own 3 and live with 5 more, we have one outside cat that has an owner and I have one that doesnt live with me anymore.. All are inside that photo album! Bubba (B&W) is my 3 yr old. I got him at 3 months old and he snuck into my heart and I love his cuddles though he hates when I grab him without food. Shadow (Grey) was gotten for my moms ex boyfriend and I wouldnt let him take her when she left, she was mine. She does not like to be held for long and is a sweetheart to people. Firefly(Tabby) is my girl. She is a little over a yr and I got her at 12 weeks but known her since birth basically. I adopted her from the barn I work for and we kept her in the tack room until she was weaned. She cuddles with me at night and is literally spoiled rotten. Those are all of mine, minus Skittles but he doesnt live with me anymore. The others in this album are Billy, Jack, Muffin, Bacon, and Jade. Short story on them. Jack and Muffin are strays brought in. Billy is a rescue from where we volunteer. Jade is Skittles sister and Bacon is their younger sibling!

I have a Kong Kickaroo now and they love that thing. Its amazing how much they play. I think maybe a second one would make their kitty days.

I love watching pigeons in the city. It's like they're little secret agents tracking down folks with crumbs. Then when you turn around, they scatter. I can just imagine their conversations - "Careful! Careful! They're coming back this way! What should we do?!" "...I don't know, fly casual?"

My Lucy would be in heaven if she got this. She loves catnip, but I can't afford the good stuff most of the time - these apparently last forever and a day.
