If you like stuff from the 60s, start with JLA: Zatanna's Search trade. It's not an outstanding read, but I liked seeing where she came from to really appreciate her evolition.
As brownpixel said, "Grant Morrison's Seven Soldiers of Victory features her prominently." It is a really terrific read, and probably the point where I started to realize how amazing Zatanna is.
Zatanna: Everyday Magic one-shot by Paul Dini is a very enjoyable read, but borders on difficult to find. If you can find it, I highly suggest it.
Zatanna's solo series (16 issues, July 2010-October 2011) was an incredibly fun, enjoyable read. I absolutely loved every single issue, and I had hoped that the series would run for a very, very long time. Thanks to the reboot, that was not the case. But, it is collected entirely in two trades: Vol 01, The Mistress of Magic, which collects issues 01-06, and Vol 02, Shades of the Past, which collects issues 07-16. I highly suggest both of these trades. If you're like me, you'll read them over and over and over.
The Power Girl (2009) series featured Zatanna in two issues (issue 22 and 23). It was a fun appearance of Zatanna. If you can find these two issues for cheap, I suggest getting them (though I loved the entire Power Girl run as well).
Obvious a ripoff of this much better book.
Getting into the big name companies can be terribly confusing. And a lot of those stories aren't exactly great for little kids.
Batman and Superman both had kid-friendly Comics based off of the 90s cartoon series. They were a lot of fun. And a number of issues officer permanone were written by Mark Millar. Who's going on to write a ton of really cool comics, as well as created kick-ass in the kingsman franchises.

Marvel has some based off of The Avengers kids cartoon

For a two and a four year old, I would also suggest looking for coloring books and activity books.

Kids that young care about the cool costumes and school characters they recognized from the movies more than they care about any particular stories. So don't stress too much about which Comics to get them as long as you know they are specifically made to be kid friendly.
As for yourself, are you looking for suggestions to? What kind of stories are you into? There's something for everyone. One of the books I suggest to most people who say they don't read comics is a series called Gotham Central. It's got superheroes in it, but it's more like a grounded and gritty police procedural crime Noir series. Takes place in Gotham City, Batmans city, but it focuses more on the police force than anything else.
Youre so lucky.

Looks like a few volumes but ive not read it - just knew id seen it somewhere.
Your options are:
All of these should be available at your local library as well.
As other's have said, Ultimate Spider-Man might be better suited for 13+. I'd also recommend Spider-Girl for when your friend's daughter is a teen.
Does he play video games? This Scribblenauts DC Comic is an absolute joy.
Start with Shazam!: The Monster Society of Evil
DC followed that up with a sequel series called Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam. Sadly, Jeff Smith was not involved, but he first trade has great art by Mike Kunkel, you can get it here.
Other than that, there just isn't much to recommend. Most of his good stuff hasn't been collected or has been out of print for years, and DC's New 52 take looks to be completely at odds with what made the character great. Not is just not a good time to become a Captain Marvel fan.
Mark Waid followed Morrison and it was a grand ol' time. Joe Kelly followed Waid and it was pretty damn good.
For whatever reason, they don't collect Kelly's excellent final issue, JLA #90. He did a one-shot later (#100) that led into a spin-off Justice League Elite (Volume One and Volume Two) for which the Internet has mixed opinion.
I’d suggest Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane It’s on Amazon here.
I’ve not read it but I know it’s a teen romance comic with Spidey, MJ, Flash, and the whole crew from Midtown High.
I have read, and can personally vouch for, Spider-Man: Blue. I think the graphic novel is out of print currently, but I’m sure you can find a decent second hand copy or the 6 single issues somewhere for an affordable price.
I have these! They're pretty cute and they found a fun way to work them into the rest of the Marvel universe. The four individual comics are still floating around and not too expensive on places like ebay. But they also collected them into a single paperback volume if anyone wants to just buy one book and get them all: https://www.amazon.com/Marvel-Tsum-Takeover-Jacob-Chabot/dp/1302902644
Then there are a whole bunch of "tsum tsum variant" covers like the ones u/elfmaiden687 found. These are regular Marvel comics with a special tsum themed cover. There's no tsums inside those books, but even then I got the Spider-Man one because it cracked me up: https://imgur.com/BD2MzXH
The art of the teen titans go comic (not a comedy) is like the original animated and you can look at the preview pages to check it out:

Don't let the talking raccoon fool you, the Annihilation stories are pretty mature themselves. Lots of violence, lots of pillow-talk, lots of very heavy stuff going on. Much darker than the GotG film. Fantastic books, but not sure I'd recommend it for a 9-year-old.
The Marvel Adventures line is surprisingly well written and funny and is specifically aimed at younger readers. However, if he's already developed a taste for comic book violence it might be hard to get him to give it a try. There is an all ages GotG book that might be worth a try.
Boom! had an amazing Darkwing Duck and Duck Tales that ended with an mind blowing crossover between the two of them call Dangerous Currency
. They even had a Rescure Rangers but then Disney bought Marvel and let their contract with Boom! laps before they could finish it or get to a Talespin comic.
Marvel might have something in the works for those properties but my guess they are focusing on the Star Wars titles they’ll be doing in 2015.

Awesome. If he likes superheroes, I highly recommend the DC Super Friends comics/trades by Sholly Fisch and DC Super Pets books for kids. They're small three chapter books with pictures. The stories are simpler to follow.
Here are a few suggestions:
Batman
Batman and Green Lantern
Batman and the Flash
Tiny Titans
There are also Batman: The Brave and the Bold books written for children
Good luck OP!
Is this the trade you're looking for?
One thing to know is that Green Lantern isn't a single hero. It's more of a superhero police force with multiple heroes in it. The most notable ones in comics are Hal, John, Guy, Kyle and Jessica.

I haven't read it myself, but DC Super Hero Girls: Spaced Out looks like it might have some origin elements for the Jessica Cruz Green Lantern.
