You can replace the whole fixture for $10-20 (example) so IMO it's not worth trying to find replacement glass - just replace the whole thing. The glass is the expensive part so would be almost as much as the whole fixture anyway. A tip: people often replace these "basic" light fixtures so you can usually find ones like this for free on Craigslist / local classifieds.

I would not LED strip, its clumsy, lots of parts, and so on

Suggestions:

  1. I would repair the wire connection and use a candelabra LED bulb [I think candelabra is the right socket shape?], which will put far less strain on the weak splices than the old light did because LED uses far less amps. Thats the easy option, use the brightest bulb you can find
  2. Adapt to a normal socket size [you lose space in the glass cover because of the adaption] Use 100w LED bulb
  3. LED light engine retrofit
  4. Replace the socket with a Type A normal socket size, which opens a vast number of LED light bulbs to you, like this very bright LED bulb [you have to check how long these special bulbs are, minus screw base, plus the socket depth etc]

The purple and grey are there to be used with a low voltage dimmer, I believe levitron makes one.

These aren’t what I use, but I’ve seen a lot of people recommend these. Not sure how many you’d need, but I use 3 2FT lights for my 33” by 18” shelves, so maybe you’d need at least 6?

These lights do leave a foot of space on the side/6” on each side that aren’t directly below the lights. You could avoid putting anything in that space or just put plants that aren’t as light hungry. Or maybe have 2FT lights perpendicular to the 4FT ones.

Well you can do it in the European style. In Europe, they use a series of battery powered units that have the shape of US smoke detectors on the ceiling. Looking around Amazon, they're called closet fixtures.

This is a motion sensored ceiling light. It has multiple settings, anywhere from turning off after 30 seconds of non- motion or 4 minutes after there isn't motion.

Yeah. They all have the operating temperatures announced, and basically inside a closed fixture, the operating temperature is... unknown, unpredictable, a factor that they don't have so they can't possibly calculate it either. Heat dissipation qualities are also different if the shade is glass vs. linen vs. wood vs. metal.

I have seen a lot of those. I think they stick down about 1.5" or so. I'm hoping to find something more flush than that, but maybe I'm just dreaming...

I'll probably end up getting these.

Thanks for your reply

These might work but what a horrible website. The first major red flag is 4.9 stars out of 5 based on 403 reviews. That's obvious non-sense. Anytime you have a (tacky) website full of testimonials like this is a sure sign of bullshit.

You can pick these types of lights up for $15.

My first concern is that this light is going to be an ungrounded light fixture with a metal housing. That's the nature of these lights with sockets. I would never use one unless it was tested by a NRTL like ETL or UL. Keep in mind that at this price point that safety will never be a priority. You can always sue Amazon if you get a shock but then again you may be on your own if this thing catches fire etc.

"Don't touch with wet hand when the light is working." I mean, WTF....they are saying in black and white that the light is not safe.

100 lumens per watt really is not that good. 6000 lumens is way overkill for a 5 gallon bucket.

For general illumination purposes a CRI of 80 sucks because the R9 rating is going to very, very low. This means that reds won't render accurately. That's just something to consider outside of space buckets.

I would not get the 6000K CCT versions. That's great for a garage and I use high CCT lights for my lab bench because the blue light helps with visual acuity.

I'll buy one to tear apart and see how safe it is for myself since several people have brought this up to me. My testing is more extensive that what other people do like getting an oscilloscope of the LED driver (if any), thermal imaging testing, trying to induce line voltage faults, the blanket test to see if it burns like other lights have, spectrometry testing of the LEDs etc.

This is the specific light that I just ordered to test and will be here next Tuesday. I've never found any of these cheapest lights to be safe.

Hardwiring is the most sensible and less troublesome. I think you're overthinking this project.

Flush mount 4 ft LED lights wide enough to cover 4" j-box.

Example mounting with drywall screws.

Example mounting over j-box

Some will have mounting plate that you screw into the j-box or most comes with drywall screws to mount (they weight like 2-3 lbs max with LEDs).

Fit will be flush while using existing switch, lights wont be dangling, and you won't have to add receptacle.

Here's one from Lowe's if you'd rather pick up in store.

Lots of new LED ceiling lights have motion sensors built in.

I THINK these are the ones in my house: s://www.amazon.com/Ceiling-ANOTEK-Outdoor-Hallway-Basement/dp/B07QQXG2G3

The turn on when you enter the room and turn off after 5 minutes or so of no motion. They have color-tone settings, you can set them to dim before completly shutting off, etc.

Some notes: People are asking what kind of lights this is. I bought the lights from Costco half a year ago (yes, that's right, I'm too lazy to pull out my stuff...), and it seems they no longer have this one in stock any more. By searching "Koda ceiling light" I think this is probably the one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07N632XTM

Maybe you can consider LED light fixtures, Save 87% on your energy bill by replacing 150W with 24W LED. And LED disks that look pretty much just like recessed but they are surface mounted, so the installation work would be minimal.

Yup...throw it awat and get all new LED light fixtures...6 pack 40w LED shop lights are dirt cheap... This one is only $70 for 6!

My garage with 20+ year old fluorescent lights looks so bright and cheeful with 6 of these. They turn on instantly and glow brightly all the time...no cold start or age fading.

The one you linked seem expensive for no reason.

u/VoidEnds · 1 pointr/Lighting

8FT long T8 bulbs are available from websites like 1000bulbs but are quite expensive.

A good alternative are linkable "Shop Lights" that incorporate LEDs inside a metal housing with some sort of lens. The good thing about these fixtures is that they are plug and play and typically easy to install. The downside is that you can't simply replace the led inside if it malfunctions, usually you will have to buy a new unit to replace the one that goes bad. Although it can happen usually these fixtures are tested and work pretty well for 5+ years with no troubles.

Thank you for the recommendation! This was one I had stumbled across, but wasn't sure if it was worth the price. Is there a discernible/significant difference between this product and, say, an LED shop light like this? Also, despite not having a case, is it essentially a plug-n-play product, or is there more I need to do to it? (It just looks so... delicate without a case)

u/whiskeybonfire · 1 pointr/NoStupidQuestions

This one is battery operated, senses motion to turn on, and has a bracket like a smoke detector for mounting.
