Edit: this is the pack I got. Has one set of 30mm eyes which should be perfect, and a bunch of other random smaller sizes that should be fun for something else :)

This is actually an interesting subject as there have been some design choices that have left us scratching our heads!
To my knowledge, 'discussion' on this is mostly restricted to 'in-house engineers' trying to figure it out as an afterthought. The primary focus being on how do they fit all that hardware into something small enough to fit on our heads without being the thermal equivalent of a mini-nuke.
The plastic oblong of the actual headset has some interesting variations, but they all look very similar since they all have to do the same thing: house the electronics and position sensors or cameras in certain required positions. Of course, the Pimax stands out here with it's distinctive flat planes design. Imho, the really interesting bit is in the design choices of the mounting methods: how they're worn.
Each manufacturer came up with it's own rendition, probably due to copyright. Sony had the 'Halo band'. Vive had the DAS, after the phenomenal mistake of the first 'straps' (a mistake repeated by Pimax). The Rift had it's own that actually worked out of the box, but you couldn't wear glasses with it. WMR has been mostly 'halo', I believe. I know that my HP and Samsung were both 'halo' (the mount designs really suck).
Over time, they've been 'distilling' into variations of their parent designs. To be honest, I don't understand why the 'halo' version still exists, but it does. So far, it seems that the Index is coming out on top as the most comfortable design to date. Imho, the Odyssey takes the award for requiring the most modifications to get something that wasn't actually painful, the Pimax takes the award for having the most impact if you get the placement wrong, which was pretty much guaranteed if you used the strap/facepad they sent you!
I believe that there is still some arguing about the 'best design', but a few things are clear.
All design choices require googly eyes.
Pimax are pre-Cylons.
Making a choice is a really good way to start an argument!
Edit: I like the Pimax with my DAS. Looking forward to their version called a MAS and their 'Vision Kit'. Should be the end of the need for mods! We also just got the ability to change the color of the front chevron, now we're hoping for more colors and maybe the ability to make it swing back and forth. The Cylons are coming, the Cylons are coming!!! :D
