$419 is an exorbitant price for this set; without even looking, can see the same set for $263

I love self-portraits because its always really interesting to see how people see themselves. Did you work from a photograph for this, or from a mirror?

If I offered any advice, it would be to blend and refine less. Did you use one pencil for the entire thing? Id recommend getting a pencil set so you can experiment with a range of hardness - it will give you the option of darker darkers and more crisp, defined lights. They arent expensive and they'll last you for years - I think I might actually have my first set from college, although its def not a complete set anymore :)

Also, don't be afraid of hard lines and dark shadows. It will help you build structure and depth. Newer artists are always afraid to go too dark. Don't be! If you want a fun experiment, get a black piece of paper and a white piece of chalk and work in reverse (building up the lights, rather than shading in the darks).

Keep up the good work!

Great start! You have good drafting skills, I imagine this looks a lot like the reference you used. If I may add some advice, think more about contrast. You did a good job with the hair, but do you notice how it blends in with the headphones? More contrast will help separate them. Try drawing this again and think about what the darkest dark is in your picture. Then think about what is the lightest light. All of your other values should be related to the darkest dark and the lightest light. Once you start working more with values, you'll naturally move away from using contour lines to outline objects like others have mentioned.

Here's a little more info on the subject. Good luck!

Edit: Forgot to mention, using different graded pencils can help you think with more contrast. Try using a 4B, 6B, or even 8B pencil and see how dark or light you can make strokes with them

Michael's upcharges their products then gives out coupons for sometimes up to 50% off so you'll buy from them thinking it's a good price. I bought my 150 count off of Amazon for under $100. In fact right now Amazon has the same set of 150 including a pencil sharpener and an eraser for about $75. Which is great, and even cheaper than when I bought them.

The 72 count is about $32 right now.

Hmm. The groupon thing sounds cool. I will have to look into it. There are so many cool coloring books out there these days. I recommend something by Hannah Lynn. Theres also some great pencils out there. I recommend trying oil pencils like these: https://www.amazon.com/Professional-Premium-numbered-Colored-Schpirerr/dp/B072817JN4/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=oil+pencils&qid=1571366322&sr=8-6

A good set of pens is really fun for creative types. Pentel SignPens (either these or these) are fantastic. Sakura and Stabilo make great ones as well. I like previously offered highlighter ideas and love my new see-through ones that I linked there. Also what about a set of sketch pencils?

What about some paracord and accessories for making guinea pig leashes? There are tons of sites that tell how to make them, she might be into it.

I also just recently got a little more into makeup and found an AMAZING set of cheap makeup brushes as a starter set - These and I'm actually getting them for my 18 yo niece for Christmas.

Best of luck!

Honestly, I usually pick my colouring books based on how easy they are to colour (I like thick lines and not too many small finicky areas). Right now, my favourites are [the Pusheen Colouring Book] (https://www.amazon.ca/Pusheen-Coloring-Book-Claire-Belton/dp/1501164767) because it's just super cute and the designs are quick and easy to colour, and this [Art Therapie] (https://www.amazon.ca/ART-TH%C3%89RAPIE-NOUVEAUX-COLORIAGES-ANTI-STRESS/dp/2012314732) one, it's got a great variety of patterns, mostly either abstract/geometric designs or flowers. And I especially love that it has a bunch of cool kaleidoscope type designs. I would also recommend getting some decent colouring pencils. Upgrading my pencils a bit made a huge difference for me because it's so much easier to get a good solid colour and the end result is just a lot more rewarding. Right now I'm using these pencils, they're not much more expensive than some cheap Crayolas, but they make a big difference.

There’s a pencil called Perpetua that is 100% writable material but doesn’t get your hands dirty. https://www.amazon.com/Perpetua-Graphite-Pencil-Orange-NP01519/dp/B00SY76GR2

I agree with the suggestion to include some softer pencils. This set of drawing pencils gets overwhelmingly positive reviews on Amazon. It includes charcoal and a couple types of erasers in addition to a wide range of pencil hardnesses. It's on my wishlist for Christmas ;) That plus some drawing paper/sketchpad would make a nice gift set. The brands mentioned by AndresHolguin would be good choices.

If you're buying that set, don't pay full price. Amazon has it way cheaper. Unfortunately it's not prime eligible, but shipping isn't too bad. Gotta love amazon.
