Nutrisource dog food, that’s how; and make sure nobody is sneaking him any human food of any kind. One pizza crust = 1 week of house clearing farts

Also raw food diet; expensive but effective.

1.5yo 55lb mutt.
The big things are:

  • Food: $50 (lasts 2 months)
  • Flea/tick/heartworm preventative: $100 (lasts 6 months)
  • Visit to the vet: $60 (once a year)

Throw in some costs for toys/treats/misc. and I'm at around $700~$800 (conservatively) a year.

For food, I get the 35lb bag of Purina Pro Plan Shredded Chicken/Rice.

For flea/tick/heartworm preventative, I get the 6-pack of Revolution. I like this one because I don't have to give her one medication for flea/sticks (like Frontline) and a second medication for heartworms (like Heartgard). I've never found a flea or tick on her and she's never had heartworms.

When I have expendable income (I'm still a college student), I plan on getting pet insurance for her.

No prob. Look into low fat pet food (something around 10% fat), it's much more expensive but it'll head off any problems. By the time we switched it was too late, he was unable to walk, wouldn't eat or drink. We took him in and the vet told us they would basically starve him for a few days, IV fluids and pain management.

We took him home with a few meds, made him fast for 48 hours and fed him white rice and boiled chicken. It took two weeks but he bounced back and is doing fine. We feed him Blue Buffalo lower fat dry food, and occasionally a boiled chicken, white rice and carrot mixture.

Just something to think about. Cool castle btw!

I'm planning to take Bo for a nice long hike in a bit, and I'm hoping to have him on the 30ft line for like 80% of it. I'd ideally like to start working on hiking him off-leash, but this park tends to be fairly busy on the main paths on weekends, so that's probably a no-go today.

A bought a small bag of kibble that I've never heard of at the Dollar Store for giggles, as new/novelty kibbles seem to work well as training treats on walks. Both dogs reeeeaaaally seem to like it, haha.

Pull ups and dog food are always needed around here. Thanks for the contest.

We use the Holistic Select brand. It's really healthy for the pup and I have not seen any recalls for them in the past. Right now we are using their Large & Giant Breed Puppy Food -- 30lb bags are going for ~$42 on Amazon. We moved our dogs to a limited ingredient dog food from Natural Balance when one of them started getting sick after every meal. We've since stuck with the premium formula (Link #1) but started out with the Venison and Sweet Potato mix (Link #2).

My husky is running low on food, and I have not been able to buy him enough due to me not making much at my UPS job.. It would be amazing if you can order this for him.. I would be grateful

I'm afraid you won't find anything that's really that great for $1/lb. The closest I can think of is Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul. It is probably the best value-for-quality food. Lots of animal protein, no soy, no corn, no animal by-products, and most of the grains are whole grain.

I have worked at a pet food/supply store for four years and we carry everything from Purina Dog Chow (50 cents per pound) to Orijen (rated the last two years as the overall best dog food; $2.50 per pound).

EDIT: I'm not saying Whole Earth Farms is a bad food. For the price, you're getting really good value out of it. Merrick is a pretty good brand of food.

u/Usawrestling · 3 pointsr/frogdogs

We feed her Wellness.

Our frenchie was really picky when we first rescued her and would only eat foods that were harmful for her (ie: had grains).

There have been a lot of recalls on Taste of the Wild, so we avoided that brand. May be better now, but just an FYI

My 10 year old Foxhound mix has been having chronic diarrhea ever since I brought my child home from the hospital 16 months ago. Through 2 annual vet visits, we haven't had any real answers, and our vet most recently suggested a $220 blood test to rule out organ function as a cause (she's fine). She's been on the same food for 4 years, but I had no idea until recently that it was a "high protein" food and could be contributing to her diarrhea. The vet suggested a more high fiber food and recommended two prescription dog foods. I'm not about that life, if we can help it.

I picked up Blue Buffalo Healthy Weight Chicken and Rice formula with 10% fiber. I'm really hoping it helps - we've had no incidents since we started and my dog's stool looks more firm already (it's only been a few days, but lately we've had diarrhea episodes every 3-4 days, so 🤞). Without checking every bag of food for fiber content, does anyone know if there are there any other higher fiber content foods available in mass markets (grocery stores or Wal-Mart/Target) that are more affordable? I'm not opposed to the price tag of Blue Buffalo if it keeps us from cleaning up diarrhea, but I'm just wondering what else is out there.

u/ChodeMcSmalls · 3 pointsr/pitbulls

I use Wellness CORE Grain-Free (Ocean Formula) which uses fish as its protein source since my pit is allergic to poultry. You can use Wellness CORE Grain-Free (Large Breed) if you want poultry-based protein in your dog food.

I suggest you stop using Pedigree as it most likely contains a lot of unhealthy fillers and grains - you want clean and protein-dense food for your dog.

u/chadcf · 2 pointsr/freebies

If you can find it locally, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul is a quality food for the buck. Not grain free, but much better quality than purina or the like. Ridiculous name though... In the NW I can find it at Mini Pet Mart a bit cheaper than amazon, right around $1 per pound in a larger bag. Haven't compared prices to grocery store brands but at least for amazon prices, that's cheaper than or right in line with purina depending on what you pick.

I also find Taste of the Wild pretty affordable locally. It's a grain free dog food and is not terribly expensive here, though might be getting out of the purina range. I have a small dog so I just buy a 5lb bag which costs me about $12 (lasts me 3 weeks). Amazon has 30lb bags for $44 which is about $1.50 a lb, but it's a bit cheaper locally for me. Not sure how that compares to purina though.

u/alligatorslippers · 2 pointsr/dogs

What brand is the lamb and rice food you are feeding her?

Purina has both limited ingredient and sensitive skin formulas, have you tried those?

I found these by sorting on Chewy filters, but then I would find it on Amazon, because the Chewy page is kind of tricky to find the full ingredient list. Here is the sort by duck, and adult life stage. But there is no way to verify that duck is the only protein without clicking through each one. . Sorting price high to low seems to be better, the more expensive options seem to have the fewer ingredients.

We do use a grain free, she's been eating this since we got her last year.

u/DavidFuckingDuchovny · 2 pointsr/Basenji

One of ours has a sensitive stomach as well. We started adding Entero to her meals. It definitely helped, but we still noticed loose stool from time to time, so we switched to Hill’s and the problem has been basically eradicated. She has awful anxiety so sometimes when she gets too nervous or excited we’ll notice it coming back but I don’t believe it’s diet related. The Entero has also done wonders for her gum and teeth health. Those things are white as can be!

For treats we do the Better Belly Rawhides, Milk Bone Minis, and Freeze Dried Dog Treats. We tried the real meat bones and they were a huge failure. Our dog loved them but they gave her all kinds of stomach problems. We stick to these religiously now, with the occasional peanut butter Kong ball. Dog flora is incredibly sensitive to diet changes so I think consistency is key.

u/stars_do_not_shine · 2 pointsr/Chihuahua

My guy used to have small episodes and it really just came down to his blood sugar and how much he had eaten. I always have food out and supply some healthy treats. He's currently on Purina and doing great albeit the ridiculously high temperatures.

u/NegatedVoid · 2 pointsr/Newfoundlander

My newfie eats Natural Balance's large breed food. She's not really a big eater - probably something like 4 cups a day (I just refill her bowl when it runs out). She's about a year and a half old, and ninety pounds.

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/dalmatians

Royal Canin Dalmatian is great, but only when the dog is 14 months and older.

For my boy as a puppy I used Blue Buffalo

All natural, and Linus loooooves it. Pricey though.

I used to get him Royal Canin because thats what the breeder had him on, but since ive switched all his skin issues have gone away.

Unfortunately he already has a bald spot on his tail, and even the best food in the world wont fix that :(

A dog having diarrhea is not normal. When I first adopted my pup she always had diarrhea, her old owner said that was normal and gave me a bag of her “normal” food. Kibble has a lot of extra unnecessary fillers and things that can be upsetting for a dogs stomach. Now I make my dogs food, chicken and rice with canned pumpkin (sounds/looks gross but it’s yummy to them) for a couple days to get the diarrhea to stop, then I bought this nutrient blend and started making the recipe that’s included. Her poops because actually normal and formed.
You always see things saying to do half of the old food half of the new to not cause upset stomach. However, I found that trying to do this with her old food that gave her upset stomach, did not help anything. If I left out her old food, she’d be fine. If I added it, diarrhea.

Sorry that doesn’t directly help your problem but I would agree that it could be a nutrient deficiency, perhaps making her food would eventually help her feel better and not eat poop.

I just looked up the item that makes prime "worth it to us" and I'm blown away because I looked it up on a browser I never "signed in" to, and instead of the "Prime logo" - I see "& FREE Shipping" since it's over $35... hmmmm.... order it 5-8 days sooner than I'll need it? Or keep prime?

Here's our item: http://www.amazon.com/Natural-Balance-Limited-Ingredient-Breeds/dp/B002VROXD0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1394741877&sr=8-1&keywords=natural+balance+large+breed $44.95 and petco, and $36.58 at amazon... my dog eats 2 & 1/2 bags a month give or take, so that's $210 savings right there, not to mention our gas and time since the closest store that carries it is 14 miles away...

u/Microchimp · 1 pointr/BostonTerrier

This is what we've been feeding ours and he almost never farts anymore unless we feed him too many treats for being a good boy.

u/Terriere · 1 pointr/unpopularopinion

I feed mine Pedigree.

u/ScaryCookieMonster · 1 pointr/Greyhounds

We do Blue Buffalo Wilderness Grain Free Dry Dog Food, Duck Recipe. We picked this one because four of the first five ingredients are meat and it has no wheat, corn, or soy in it. When we first got her we went from Purina Pro Plan and then through a number of pet-store quality foods (like this one) to find one where she would eat it and her stool was healthy.

  • This is $50-$55 for a 24 lb. bag at the pet store (Petco or Pet Smart).

  • We feed her 1.5-2 cups per meal, twice a day. Sometimes we'll add about a tablespoon of cottage cheese or chopped boiled chicken, if she's getting bored with the food.

  • A bag of dry food normally lasts us about a month.

You mean this stuff, or an actual Hills prescription diet, like i/d?

http://www.amazon.com/Hills-Science-Sensitive-Stomach-30-Pound/dp/B003MGAIDI

I feed my GSD the Science Diet as well. After parvo and giardia in her first year, my GSD's gut was ruined and long term prescription food costs (like the i/d) were getting insane. She does very well on this.

This is super helpful, thank you!

Answers:
I have no idea what he weight it, I don't own a scale but it's on my "to buy" list. Though I'd say she's probably around 25 pounds give or take.
Her body looks fine, probably a little skinny which is what prompted me to ask, but I can post a picture later for you to see.
And she's on Blue chicken and brown rice (Blue chicken and brown rice for puppies
