Amazonista Paperwhite, maksaa satkun. Versio, jossa on 3G maksaa tuplaten.

These exist. Mainly Chinese brands running Android 6.0 but some have higher. Also can be used with a wacom stylus for an e ink notepad.

Boox and likebook are some of the main brands

Bit expensive but this is ideal for reading PDFs and note taking. Runs android 9 and big screen. I'm thinking seriously about one. This plus my pixel 4 XL would cover most of what I would need. I think you can use them as an additional screen with PC or Mac as well

Paulos is pretty good. He has some other good books too.

I've read and can recommend Innumeracy and AMPtSM as quick bedtime reading or to mathematical laymen.

There's a book, Memoirs of an Invisible Man, that deals (obviously) with these sorts of things.

IIRC, his food would be visible through his stomach for an hour or so after he ate, and slowly fade away to invisibility. I don't remember if they addressed what happened after it was excreted, though...

It's been a while since I read it, but it was a pretty good book.

u/erekose · 4 pointsr/redditinvestmentclub

Thought I'd contribute something early on, as I think it's a very useful book: A Mathematician Plays the Stock Market. It's an easy read (with some proofs, equations, etc.) and explains different aspects of the market both from a mathematical and historical perspective. I haven't yet read *A Random Walk" but Paulos discusses it often, as well as the more recent "A Non-Random Walk." Essentially, he dispels a lot of market mythology and instills a healthy skepticism in its place. To be sure, he does mention which strategies and funds seem to have merit (based peer-reviewed meta-analysis.)

They just released it in blue, so I wouldn't hold my breath?

u/DiDgr8 · 3 pointsr/ereader

You'll probably find the Nova a bit small for serious note-taking. Look at the Boox Note Pro or even the Boox Max2 Pro if price really is no object.

They have "apps and stuff", but eink limits the appeal of the time wasters like Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter because those apps aren't designed well for eink. OTOH, being able to choose any Android productivity app more than makes up for the chance of "distractions".

I don't currently see the Amazon-refurb model available yesterday, but a 3rd party seller has one for $23 in "acceptable" condition here:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/ol/B00492CIC8/ref=mw_dp_olp?ie=UTF8&condition=used

The cheapest Certified Refurbished model I see currently is a 7th Gen model from Amazon, $56:

The used/ refurb section is here:

I really like my Kindle PaperWhite for e-books, but the 6' e-ink screen is just an unbelievably tiny pain-in-the-ass for PDFs...Particularly textbooks or technical books. Scrolling and re-sizing PDFs is probably just as bad on the Kobo e-ink display.

Don't bother with anything less that a 10' screen for PDFs...And don't bother with e-ink at all if PDFs will be a primary concern.

But I do love my Paperwhite for just text reading. The lighting is terrific (and I came from an un-lighted Kindle Touch) and the fonts/resulution are noticeably better than my old unit. You can't beat the Paperwhite for reading in bed or outside in bright sunlight.

For technical book PDFs, I ended up buying a friend's old 16GB iPad 2 for $200 when he decided to buy a iPad Air. Since I have 40-or-so technical books in my library via the Kindle Store and side-loaded, it was definitely a good investment for me. I use it almost every day for PDF reading on my train commute.

You can get a Certified Refurbished Kindle Fire HD for the same price at Amazon...Complete with warranty.

Good luck!

If you're price limited, would you consider a refurb?

  • (android) 32GB nexus 7 (2013) $169
  • (android) kindle fire HD 8" $199 (sometimes on sale as low as $139)
  • (windows) venue pro 8" $200ish, watch for coupons as low as $150ish.
  • (ios) ipad mini $260ish

    ----

sidenote: I have all of these devices except the ipad mini, which I have not heard good things about. My son has an ipad, but he uses my nexus 7 all the damn time so I picked up the kindle so I could reclaim my nexus 7. The Nexus 7 is amazing, and a great value. The Kindle HD is a solid device, especial at the $140 I paid and has amazing parental controls. The venue pro arrives tomorrow, so I'll review it then (I already have an 11" windows tablet, so it'll be interesting to compare them).

Advantages of the Paperwhite: It has a lighted screen, it has a higher screen resolution (that she likely won't notice when reading with larger font sizes), and it feels more substantive to the touch (less like plastic).

Now, other than that, I don't see the problem with the "regular" Kindle. It's not readable in the dark, but she's used to that if she's currently reading only printed books.

If I were you, I'd look at officially refurbished Kindles before looking at used ones. The issue there: Amazon is reporting out of stock until the 23rd. Also, it's listed at $56.00, which is slightly over your budget.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KDRQEYQ

Whatever you do, the "generation" is the most important in determining the potential for getting new features as they're released by Amazon. Most of the current models are all 8th generation, but the current Paperwhite is 7th generation.

Amazon frequently marks down new Kindles by $20 during sale events. During Black Friday sales, new Kindles were $30 off, making them $49.99; that's the cheapest I've ever seen them. That's not helping you now, but I wouldn't want you to purchase it used or refurbished now and then have buyer's remorse if they have an after-Christmas sale on the new ones.

I would love to carry a notepad with me all the time for notes. Honestly, probably the biggest thing stopping me sounds simple enough: I use all the paper and need another notepad. Once that happens I now have info spread through multiple notepads and may be unable to actually find what I am looking for.

I am tempted by things such as https://www.amazon.com/Onyx-N96-ML-Display-FrontLight/dp/B01EKS0HAK (I have no doubt other significantly cheaper things exist, but just an example) so that battery life is hardly an issue and I do not run out of paper.

Thoughts on the problem of me running out of paper and having multiple notebooks/notepads?

u/stonewallpattern · 2 pointsr/kindle

about size, all we have today, is this: https://www.amazon.com/Kobo-6-8-Inch-Comfort-Resistant-E-Reader/dp/B00N9ZVN90/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1500401666&sr=8-1&keywords=kobo

for me,amazon persists on 6 inchs for a simple reason= that's the limit of size where a kindle fits a pocket. (probably, they will do like smartphones brands. they started using better technologies, which cause in bigger screens with the same size )
something like that :)

> Anyone have a book that they take out in the woods with them?

Yes, 2280 ^[1] of them currently thanks to my Kobo Aura H2O eReader, nestling inside the Rakuten protective cover.

I don't often specify particular items of kit (except whistles ^[2] ), as the reasons for an individuals preference/need for a particular way of delivering a necessary function can be so varied, but with this e-Reader I have no hesitation in an unqualified recommendation.

It's seriously water resistant. I haven't immersed it, but it's been used in both high environmental humidity, and drenching rain. The battery life is remarkable - I've gone two weeks of daily use, and there was still plenty of power left. The light from a displayed white page is more than adequate for general illumination at night, or as a low power task light.
I have the earlier version which has the microSD slot, and use a 16GB card, "sideloaded" with a large collection of files. It reads the usual epub, mobi, txt, and PDF formats. JPGs display fine.
There is a basic web browser, with very limited support for CSS and Javascript. gmail in the HTML only option works well enough for basic communication.

Before any trip I'll load-up any particular guides, or local information, tide-tables and regulatory restrictions, having converted them to PDF format on my desktop PC. I've been building up a large collection of screenshots from on-line mapping for years - anything relevant to a working area is either acquired and loaded, or added from the collection.

Weight might be too much for the ultralight folks - but at 306g (including the Rakuten sleeve), for my usage, the benefits outweigh any load penalty.

[1] Soon to be 2282, as soon as I've put Pirsig's Zen and Lila on it - thanks for the reminder u/RealisticMirror

[2] Which, obviously has to be a SOLAS rated one such as the ACME or the FOX 40.

This hasn't been mentioned. It's not perfect, but 9.7" is almost enough.

This is the screen you need. Unfortunately, it's half the price of a new Kindle.

You might be able to find one on eBay for less. I'm sure someone is selling "parts" Kindles somewhere.

u/tales_of_blueberries · 1 pointr/ebooks

Looks like the US prices are quite different to UK then. This seems to be the same reader, but as you can see the price is almost double.

u/Barakisa · 1 pointr/overlord

Thats an e-book reader. It is meant for reading pdf s and other formats electronic on a display that resembles paper (it use e-ink to print it and doesn’t emit any light, just like paper). Also it is convenient because you can store several thousands of books (not physical, of course) inside. Awesome thing when travelling. While it doesn’t quite replace the actual feel of a book, it is WAYS better than a conventional screen.

Here is a link in amazon for this particular model

David Lindley The End Of Physics - The Myth Of A Unified Theory
His argument for why a theory of everything would remain a “myth” is essentially that it would be hard to test, something that nobody can really disagree on.
Well, some others fear of Unified theory from exactly the opposite reason: it will be selfevident and transparent.

u/Whatchamazog · 1 pointr/tablets

No clue. I would search for E-ink tablets. There are some out there and I would assume that anything with Wifi would support WPA2 these days, but since you are asking, it sounds like you've found that not to be the case.

Something like this? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M1RKK1Y

u/ThingsThatMakeMeMad · 1 pointr/buildapcforme

Even before rebates this one is cheaper than $600. After rebates its $80 cheaper than the other build. Yours is over $620 without shipping and taxes. it sure as hell will be more by the end.

This RAM is one of the best ddr3-1600 in the market and the FX-6300 isn't necessarily better for gaming.

Not sure why you're so mad though.

u/mamashlo · 0 pointsr/creepy

The pics immediately reminded me of Memoirs of An Invisible Man (the way the protagonist wrapped his face to give it dimension). Read and loved the book when it first came out. Hated the movie.
