In addition to all the other tips here - separate your whites out from dark or coloured clothing. They’ll stay white MUCH longer instead of fading/greying out. I usually separate my loads as follows:

  • whites: cold wash. Add fabric softener and detergent, plus laundry whitener (not bleach)

  • towels/tea towels: hot wash. Add detergent plus a capful of antibacterial/antifungal laundry rinse (I can’t find a US equivalent to the one I use but this would probably do the trick. Do NOT add fabric softener; it’s hydrophobic and prevents your towels absorbing as much moisture when you use them.
  • sheets: cold wash. Add fabric softener and detergent
  • delicates: cold wash. Add fabric softener and detergent
  • everything else: cold wash. Add fabric softener and detergent

I also air dry everything. I haven’t used a dryer in probably 10 years. Sun kills a lot of the bacteria that make things like your socks and exercise gear smelly.

It’s also really important to never let your laundry sit in the machine, or sit wet anywhere. Hang it out as soon as it’s washed, or it will start to get that gross musty smell as it dries.

I know it sounds like a lot of work, but it really makes a difference to the longevity of everything.

    Edit: formatting.

I’ve figured this out : laundry sanitizer !!! I didn’t even know it existed. Behold :

Lysol Laundry Additive Sanitizer, 41 Ounce https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QCQFGY4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_62itDb18K6KA4

u/kv4268 · 5 pointsr/homemaking

Absolutely. I live in Hawaii and when I got here my boyfriend's towels smelled horribly of mildew because it's constantly humid here. We started using laundry sanitizeron our linens and the problem has disappeared. They even make one specifically for athletic wear. Also, athletic wear should never be washed with fabric softener or dryer sheets because it inhibits the specialized fabrics from doing their jobs. It should also be air dried, as the elastics are broken down by the dryer.

I never have to wash clothing more than once. This stuff works wonders. As for the smell on your body, a shower's about the only thing that'll do it, but if neither of you mind it, there's really no need to shower immediately after smoking. For me, I just don't get into bed after smoking unless I've showered. Smoky clothing sits in a pile by the hamper, I don't do a special load just for them.

u/rubywolf27 · 5 pointsr/migraine

There is! The scented ones trigger my migraines too, but this one is actually pretty effective. I use it on my couch a lot to make sure my place doesn’t smell like my dogs lol. It’s kind of hard to find in stores though. Febreze Fabric Refresher Air Freshener, Free Nature - 16.9 oz - 2 pk https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MUEAE9G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_kCrvDb8SG816T

I use this -
https://smile.amazon.com/Lysol-Laundry-Sanitizer-Additive-2X90oz/dp/B0759NL96S/

Seems to work well and it's not as harsh as bleach, but probably more effective than vinegar.

u/[deleted] · 3 pointsr/HomeImprovement

You need to sanitize it. Use lysol laundry sanitizer. Run a cycle, let it agitate, then let it sit over night. Bleach works too but may degrade plastic parts.

I've tried quite a few things, and found this works best. Probably the best thing is to not let clothes/towels sit very long after you get home, definitely wash them the same day. This will get most stuff out and will for sure keep odor away if the item doesn't already smell:
https://www.amazon.com/No-Sweat-High-Efficiency-Detergent/dp/B01150VJ3K/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1523194815&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=no%2Bsweat%2Bdetergent&smid=A2996C75Y77H1P&th=1

This will get rid of almost every smell, if you have something really stubborn just use it once at first and then use the No Sweat in the previous link:
https://www.amazon.com/Zero-Odor-Eliminator-Concentrate-16-ounce/dp/B01LXPB20H/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1523194319&sr=8-5&keywords=zero+odor

u/justarandomcommenter · 3 pointsr/TropicalWeather

You might want to [try this on it: OdoBan Ready-to-Use 32 oz Spray Bottle and 1 Gal Concentrate, Eucalyptus Scent - Odor Eliminator, Disinfectant, Flood Fire Water Damage Restoration] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000ZOQ9HY/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_h.eNBbB9G0G3V) - after you clean it of course!

That stuff is a lifesaver when it comes to mold and smelly random crap.

Ever have a gi, rash guard or gym shirt that smells fine after a wash but smells like cat piss after you start sweating? I did and after being embarrassed I endeavored to find a way to fix it or throw it away. I was perplexed why, despite washing my gi after every roll, that they started to reek. The answer was simply that a cold wash with soap/detergent does not kill the bacteria present in your clothes. Do you want ring worm, staph or MRSA? Because that's how you get it! Maybe I'm just a particularly nasty bastard and you aren't, if so please ignore my post, but hopefully I am the best smelling person you might roll with.

Here are the fixes: OdoBan (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ZOQ9HY), Lysol Laundry Sanitizer (www.amazon.com/Lysol-Laundry-Sanitizer-Additive-2X90oz/dp/B0759NL96S) and Tide Pods Odor Rescue (www.amazon.com/Tide-Febreze-Defense-Laundry-Booster/dp/B01MS9CX2L).

The cause of the smell is bacteria. All of the other tricks such as freezing your clothes, etc only mask that their are funky bacteria living in your clothes. These bacteria must be killed and without hot water wash and dry, soap alone can't do it and once they are deep in your clothes I've not had success removing them without the above products.

If your clothes don't stink and you want to keep it that way use the Lysol Additive in your fabric softener slot - you can do the same thing with Odoban, but I prefer the smell of the Lysol which I now use ever wash as a preventative measure.

If your gi already stinks, a few tablespoons of OdoBan mixed with water and soaked over night will get ride of most of the smells. The Tide Pods will also work the same way. You can add either to the wash cycle too, but there is generally not enough time for them to work without a soak. If the stink isn't deep seated, you can just toss the Tide Pods in with a normal wash cycle.

I've had good luck deodorizing dog bedding with a combination of detergent, hot water, oxyclean, and Lysol laundry additive. I don't use any heavily scented products because I have sensitive skin and breathing systems, but I imagine they'd likely just mask the problem rather than solve it.

If that doesn't do the trick, it tells me I should strip my laundry. I have very hard water and no way to install a softener (ah, condo living), and the minerals in the water can build up in fabric.

Buy some Odoban (http://www.amazon.com/OdoBan-Odor-Eliminator-Gallon-Concentrate/dp/B000ZOQ9HY)- I love this stuff. They have it at Walmart in the laundry aisle. I work at a laundromat and we use it to get rid of every smell you can imagine. Just spray it everywhere, (ceilings, floors, counters) and then wipe it down if you want. You could also probably just let it dry. It smells kind of funny but it will go away and hopefully take the stuff with it.

u/tarantulawarfare · 2 pointsr/amateur_boxing

Since you’re having to wait a couple days until washing, you can still soak them in that bucket, but add some Dawn in there with them. Swish it around good.

When you wash them, add some Downy Fresh Protect (Amazon link so you can see the product, but you should easily be able to find it locally if you’re in the US). I get compliments at the gym for smelling nice and it’s because of the Downy.

Instead of regular laundry detergent, I use Dawn for the gym load (we have BJJ gis so it’s a big load). If you use Dawn or any other dish liquid, reduce the amount because it’s a lot more potent than regular laundry detergent and can get bubbly.

I wash nasty gym laundry for two people. My husband has very rank gym clothes. Synthetics seems especially prone to wanting to stay stinky, and this method works great for us.

Recommended on another post, this stuff should last you awhile. Comes with the spray bottle already mixed and a jug of concentrate. Been using it for a month now and I quite like it. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ZOQ9HY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I use 2 drumstick looking things like this [one] ( https://www.amazon.com/Sanabul-Natural-Non-Toxic-Deodorizer-Boxing/dp/B01M5DQI0W/ref=pd_cp_200_1?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01M5DQI0W&pd_rd_r=BMSBK40Y13NF9Y7FSQAY&pd_rd_w=BFiFT&pd_rd_wg=ix6NZ&psc=1&refRID=BMSBK40Y13NF9Y7FSQAY )

They have some kind of woodchips inside that suck up all the smell and the moisture from your gloves.
Been kickboxing for 1 yr, and my gloves still smell like leather, that's it :)
The ones I got are not even any kind of name brand, just found them at the local boxing supply/gear store.

If you got expensive gloves, I honestly would not wipe them with any harsh chemicals.
And then just put the drumstick thing all the way in right after practice. And if you can lay it all in a place where there's some kind of breeze, that's best.

This is why I carry a small spray bottle of Oboban in my driver side door. I spray before and after every pax. Smells great too!

The musty smell almost always comes from the foam padding on the inside of the metal shell. The padding is thin and is glued on, and to remove it/de-odorize it you'll have to take the shell off. You can remove it with a any thing thin and flat, such as a paint scraper, razor blade, or something similar, then spray the metal shell parts with a deodorizer. I've used a variety of deodorizers, but this one has worked well for me.

If you don't want to remove it you can try to deodorize the padding itself, though this doesn't always work. Also, if you want to replace the foam padding, you can. A simple hobby foam from a craft store and a hot glue gun is the simplest way, while flashing tape can provide added noise and vibration reducing benefits superior to the original foam.

Use something like Lysol Laundry Sanitizer or Hex Fabric Booster every time you wash your athletic wear, and DO NOT use liquid fabric softener on it. It's the lingering bacteria in it that's making it smell funky.

Odoban - A lot of martial artist use it for the smelly gis and gym bags. The stuff works better than febreeze.

I didn't search hard enough to find the single bottle. They sell it at walmart for less than $5.

I'd not do this, but if I did, I would add a bit of this

Lysol laundry sanitizer in the rinse cycle on my gym clothes load every week and once or twice a month soak overnight in Active Green.

Lysol Laundry Sanitizer Additive, Crisp Linen, 90oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N6BP63M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_X3PPDbCQMZSSE

Can you just air dry them in the sun? The sun's rays should disinfect them. Woolite makes a Dryer Sheet that you can use in your dryer to clean your clothes similar to dry cleaning. I think you could pick them up at Target, Wal-Mart, etc. Just remember to turn the dryer heat setting off (air fluff or whatever).

u/N0_M1ND · 1 pointr/MMA

What's your urgency? I'd probably just wait for a pair of 12-16oz gloves to appear on MMA HQ, which is about once a week.

Price Range is also a factor? Sanabul makes very good and very cheap combat sports gear: https://www.amazon.com/Sanabul-Natural-Non-Toxic-Boxing-Deodorizer/dp/B01M5DQI0W/ref=sr_1_6?m=A14TJKA4FS5CS1&s=merchant-items&ie=UTF8&qid=1487829194&sr=1-6

These are on like super clearance. Sanabul only retails through Amazon, just so you know.

Also, you should buy some wraps, unless you have them.

u/vasovagalprincess · 1 pointr/femalefashionadvice

I just give them a spritz of febreze fabric refresher, let them air out, and hang them back up. I try to wash my blouses and sweaters as little as possible because the washers and dryers in my dorm are so rough on clothing.

u/unicorn_factory · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Would you like a falafel with that

febreze cheaper than laundry, faster than a shower and if your roommate is a slob you can spray his stuff down with it.

u/Preachism · 1 pointr/malelivingspace

Pardon the late reply, was out of town for the weekend. I recommend the brand Le Blanc. It is a bit pricier but lasts ages. I prefer it because the scent actually lingers in a nice subtle way and therefore you just need a spritz here and there, versus other scents that are very weak and fade minutes after you apply them. Besides Le Blanc, just search "linen wash" or "linen spray" and you'll find loads of options. My favorite scents, not too overwhelming, are fresh laundry scent, lemongrass, and lavender.
