Ever thought about wearing a dosimeter just to see if they are telling the truth? I'd wear it in a way that is hidden though, as there have been stories of people getting fired for it, and the TSA's official stance is that they are not needed or allowed. Which begs the question: what are they afraid of?

edit: here is one you can put in your wallet

When I worked with a sports med doc and we did minimal fracture cases, I didn't because we didn't use fluoro as much...but I switched to a new job that's mostly trauma and foot/ankle where we use TONS of it. So I bought some glasses.

I have these that I got on amazon - I like them because they're not super heavy and bulky on my face. They were about $100 cheaper when I bought them though...

First the good news: You're not sitting still in a constant field since you're driving through it and you get moderate shielding from your cab.

Now the bad news: This isn't a medical x-ray it's a security X-ray used to penetrate metal, so it has a higher MeV than a normal x-ray. The TSA, the wonderful branch of government that they are, will not release any information concerning their x-ray equipment nor allow independent testing so nobody knows how high these things are really cranked up.

If it becomes a constant thing of passing through the scanners I would look into getting documentation of your exposure and start carrying a personal dosimeter to get a ballpark of what your dose is. Documentation wise, just anything that says, "Yes, driver X drove through a scanner."

For the dosimeter you can buy some fairly cheap wallet dosimeters on amazon. These are good for ballparking at best, but can be included in your medical records as a means to indicate potential precursors to cancer. There are others that you can reset yourself and reuse, but after a certain amount of time they are unreliable.

If I was getting X-rayed more than once a week I would ask my company to sign up for a dosimetry monitoring program. They will provide you with a more accurate film badge and cycle them out every quarter and give you quarterly dose reports and the documentation of exposure will be from an accredited monitoring program.

During my research when I thought I was going to adopt some turtles I stumbled across some people using big cattle troughs for them. They’re much cheaper per gallon than an aquarium, and wide rather than tall. Basically a small pond. Just throwing it out there since the size of tank they eventually need can be really expensive.

Sure, I can make errors and be confused - they interfere with our thinking with RF / EMF interference unless you wear a special lined hat - but photographs are objective! That is what you call empirical evidence - scientific proof.

Yeah, when you think about it, there is no need to plug something into the main outlet if you are discharging, even if you only want ground. When working on old electronics of unknown status, never leave it to chance. Also, the outlet ground should be confirmed to connect to true earth ground.

But anyway here's a safer device than attaching the wall plate screw: https://www.amazon.com/StaticTek-Adapter-Universal-Connection-Unbreakable/dp/B071J61CSV

It is a good idea in general to open things up and clean them if you spill stuff into them. However, I would look up some youtube videos of people working on your particular model. I haven't opened a MacBook in years, but some laptops can be a real pain. You'll want to make sure you have the right tools and a backup computer in case things go south and you have to take it in somewhere. Definitely back up your data if you can.

As far ESD stuff, you can buy a wrist strap and mat on Amazon for about $25.

http://www.amazon.com/Velleman-AS9-Anti-Static-Field-Service/dp/B004XZQ30Y

Plug the mat into the third prong of a grounded outlet. Then set the laptop on the mat and put on the wrist strap. After you open the laptop, be sure to touch an exposed metal screw in there or the metal case before starting work. This will ensure the laptop is at ground potential. When you pull the motherboard or any components from the laptop, set them on the mat.

You can clean the laptop with isopropyl alcohol and or distilled water. Alcohol is nice because it dries fast. Just get in there with some q-tips and start scrubbing. Of course, not too hard. The tiny surface mount components can come off if you press too hard or if they're corroded. Just make sure that if something does break loose, you know exactly where it came from. One good trick for gently cleaning big messes is to dump a good bit of alcohol on the board, then spray it off with a can of air. Just be careful to keep from getting any microphones or speakers wet. It's also not good to leave a board wet for too long. They can warp.

Thank you for the kind word and to answer your question, no, we do not have units with the range of beyond 1 milisievert per hour.

1 mSv/h is a very high dose, we are talking the Three-Mile Island incident here or 15 chest X-rays in a row.

https://www.allianz.com/en/about_us/open-knowledge/topics/environment/articles/110407-radiation-how-much-is-harmful.html/#!ma62477f2-4bcb-431a-940c-ed2cbd6ead56

Some units do have a dosimeter functions though - counts accumulated dosage which was recently used on a Chernobyl excursion by MIT students.

Ugg, complaining about false equivalencies. I'm not seeing it here. Sandbags or sandbag alternatives are incredibly affordable (saying your house came with smoke detectors already is moot) especially when compared to repair costs. And it all comes down to preparedness. If it was $1250 for a fire extinguisher, would you really not buy it? Do you not value your life that much?

What the hell bags are you looking at? Sandbags (filled) are normally sold for $15 each, or if you buy them by the pallet they are around $10-13 per bag. If you buy empty sandbags, they are roughly $0.50-1.00 each. Then just by bulk sand and fill.

There are numerous other options out there instead of sandbags. These for example: https://smile.amazon.com/FloodSax-FS5R-Self-Inflating-Sandless-Absorbent/dp/B019C6C578/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1492799785&sr=8-7&keywords=flood+prevention

They store nice and flat and compact. You can find similar ones for cheaper elsewhere. I don't think it's too much to ask these people that have often multi-million dollar houses on the Bay to have some of these around, or at least to buy them from the government.

Here is an even easier solution, and it's only $50/ft for 14" of protection.

Do you have other ISPs in the area? I might try switching providers. The only other option I can think of is this thing electrostatic eliminator

Step 1. Aquire this and this.

Step 2. Attend the lab.

Thanks to everyone for your help. Build successful.

I'm not the greatest at cable management but I'm pleased that I was able to put it together. Had a minor issue with screen not being detected, but I swapped the RAM around different slots and removed CMOS battery, then restarted the machine. It works! :)

I have a version of this; it has the best size and feature-to-price ratio. I opened it up; the PCB is marked in Russian; although they certainly hide that fact unless you do some research.

Wow, that is really helpful. I recently had a kid and I'm kind of paranoid about exposing him to stuff and thought it might be a fun educational tool later so for a few months I've been thinking about getting something like http://smile.amazon.com/RADEX-Advanced-Radiation-Detector-Software/dp/B00DAITFOG/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1427764044&sr=8-5&keywords=geiger+counter . Do you happen to know anything about these RADEX brand counters? I'm guessing the Ludlum 14c is way more accurate but these RADEX ones are tempting because they seem more portable and at least slightly cheaper assuming I buy it new.

u/automate_the_things · 1 pointr/smarthome

You really don't want to risk something gimmicky for this. I'm also in the market for a radon detector, and I'm thinking of something like this one: https://www.amazon.com/RADEX-Advanced-Radiation-Detector-Software/dp/B00DAITFOG/

Minute-by-minute smartphone updates isn't something remotely useful for a radon detector, but being able to upload the data to a computer is, so I can have graphs of data over time.

Do more expensive ESD bands mean more protection over a cheaper one or are they all the same? How much does a $1 ESD wrist wrap vary from a $5 band or even a $85 strap? Will the $5 wrap have added protection than the $1 band or is $85 the best choice? I have never purchased a ESD band so I don't know what to get. Thanks!

u/mechiah · 1 pointr/computertechs

The first one assumes you'll attach a grounding wire to it (you'll see rolls of this stuff for covering spaces of different sizes, add your own ground). The second one includes it.

This on Amazon check out Bertech, though I just saw this one and it looks like a neat starter, especially if you're in the field.
