Here's the exact one we used!

Slow day so I was mowing a lawn at a company property when the eclipse gave me a nice break from the sun. I'm not too proud to mow some grass when they pay me my crane operator wage to do it :D.

On the way back from mowing I got a call to go roll some weights on a pump jack by myself about an hour away.

EDIT: Is that this hard hat, and if so, what do you think?

u/squidwalk · 4 pointsr/tf2

I think his idea is that it would be ridiculous to wear one out as a casual, non-work related hat. The bigger issue was that it already exists in real life, and isn't that hard/expensive to get.

It kinda depends on the size/mount of your headlamp, but there are a couple different rubber headlamp straps (both fabric with rubber and full rubber) that you can find. "rubber headlamp strap" seems to turn up good results.

Replace the elastic band with a rubber helmet strap. Streamlight and Princeton Tec both make one.

get a regular fibre metal tiger hood. they are cheap and always work, i have a few of them in case my speedglas doesnt work or i run out of new clear lenses. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004F7OSS4/ref=twister_B07PND7865?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Get a fliphood hood with an auto darkening lens. This is what I use everyday and I would never go back to the other hoods. When I need to grind flip up and full face protection. When I weld flip down and auto darkening

(2). ArcOne T240-10 Tradesman https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003WE9XXQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_UzhRDbB3SG6EQ

Just make sure to use 3 protective lense

(3). Protective lense. " https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QC67KR8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_yEhRDb8CTXD1B

One for the front when it’s down. And when it’s up, One on the hood to protect your face. And the last one again when it’s up to protect the backside of the auto darkening lense.

Also the auto darkening lense and the protective cover are called 2x4. And 2x4 lense should fit In the hood.

u/customflip · 3 pointsr/deadmau5

I made one but I decided that I was going to go balls deep and try one of the most difficult designed mau5 heads out, the disco head. Long story short it cost me about ~$300 to make, not counting 2 others that I messed up on.

Materials:

-Head

-Eyes

-Head Mount

-Mouth Mesh

-[2] Led lights for coloring the eyes

-Superglue for mouth

-[2] Plastic glue for Headmount

-About [6-10] Rhine stone glue bottles

-[3] bags of Rhinestones

-Foam Ear material ---> With Ear template

-Washers -[4] Threaded Rods -Wing nuts

-Chrome Spray paint

-Lastly, Insulation Strips [White]

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Stuff I had: Dremel, stubbornness, no life, sharpies, too much free time.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Use any of the above tuts to get the general idea.

The template for the ears, (mine are huge).

Once the mouth is cut and you accounted for the eyes (pop the eyes in half and trace them on.)

Spray paint the whole head chrome, in light mist layers. The more layers the smoother the finish.

Once that's done, enjoy the 90+ hours of putting each rhinestone on, one by one.

Profit.

can’t go wrong with the pipeliner by fibre metal. I cut off the front and put a sellstrom flip front and an auto darkening lens in. The clear lenses should be supplied at just about every employer and they are cheap anyway.

I also have a Lincoln viking 3350 and I absolutely recommend it but I prefer my custom pipeliner.

Edit: Also, you can keep the fixed shade in your bag just in case your auto lens malfunctions.

Safety bump cap. Looks like a ball cap with a plastic insert so you don't hurt your head.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that unit per se, but you have to ask yourself if it will truly be used. It looks heavy and prone to fogging to me, and I know that if it were me, it would most likely quickly be relegated to a drawer somewhere and forgotten about.

The most dangerous dust from woodturning occurs when sanding, so many folks opt for only wearing dust protection at that time and going without a faceshield during that operation since it's also when there is the least danger of a piece exploding / unexpected dismount. Everyone has to decide on their own comfort level of safety protocols but I'd say the above is adequate protection for an otherwise careful hobby/occasional turner. At the other end of the spectrum, most pros that are going to be exposed to dust for days on end eventually opt for something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/3M-Personal-Protective-Equipment-Versaflo/dp/B07K15G1F6/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=3m+papr&qid=1565888996&s=hi&sr=1-7

And, it's important to note, dust collection at the source while sanding is far more important to the overall picture in terms of dust safety and health than PPE.

I weld with this http://www.amazon.com/Jackson-Safety-SmarTIGer-Auto-Darkening-Technology/dp/B00BFJLRD4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1396466077&sr=8-2&keywords=smartiger+welding+helmet

It works really well and it is about as heavy as a HF helmet(so not super light) but is really comfortable and is pretty cheap right now!(i got mine for 100 also, i think they are clearing out last years models)

u/youy23 · 2 pointsr/Welding

It’s not my favorite. There’s a sliding scale with welding hoods imo. It’s green on the left and color on the right. The speedglas is the greenest out of all the expensive hoods. Its got good clarity and is very comfortable on the eyes but has very little color and is difficult to use in the light stage for example for grinding. Then there are hoods like the optrel and arc one, they have an incredible amount of color and clairty but it isn’t as comfortable on the eyes. It also is very easy to work with in the light mode. I used to really want a speedglas because I used to think that they were the most advanced hood. I now know that they are the least advanced hood in terms of technology. I was pretty underwhelmed when I got the chance to weld with one.

I don’t want to unduly worry you but I would take honestly take a passive $40 hood or a $130 auto dark over the speedglas because I need that clarity and color in the light stage and the color in the dark stage. I just can’t see the puddle that well in the speedglas as I can with the arcone singles 240hd or arcone bffvx or the lincoln hoods or the sentinel A50 or even passives.

I attached an amazon link with the 3350, I suggest you read the first review, that guy had a speedglas. Either way, i’m sure he’ll love it. The speedglas isn’t a bad hood and i’m sure it’s an improvement on what hems using.

When it comes to hardhats. MSA makes the cream of the crop. Mostly for line workers or supervisors because of the price.

oh one more thing- I definitely recommend getting a helmet with a 4x6 panel, rather than the typical 2x4. something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Tooluxe-Welding-Helmet-Adjustable-Approved/dp/B002WQCNY6/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1382062769&sr=8-7&keywords=welder+helmet

When you first start welding, one of the biggest problems you'll have is not being able to see what you're doing when your helmet is down- having a larger opening can make a huge difference. Also, for what it's worth, I don't recommend bothering with the auto-darkening helmets- they're much more expensive, but totally unnecessary.

No problem. Here is an inexpensive shade 11 welding lens on amazon (shade 10 will not be enough):

https://www.amazon.com/Shade-11-Techniweld-Darkening-Welding/dp/B07MGZ5L9P/ref=mp_s_a_1_28?keywords=2x4+auto+darkening+lens+shade+11&qid=1566572711&s=gateway&sprefix=2x4+auto&sr=8-28

And here is the welding helmet that I use to insert the autodarkening lens into:

https://m.cyberweld.com/jahswehe2.html

I’ve tried basically every welding helmet on the market - expensive ones like the miller and Lincoln - and keep coming back to this reliable and versatile setup. The flip front makes it so you can grind without having to remove your helmet and put on a face shield. Beware of digital welding helmets that say they have a “grind mode” - you will forget to turn grind mode off and then when you go to weld, you will arc flash yourself. Every single time. Don’t waste your money because those helmets stop working after about a year and the clear replacement lenses can be around $5 or more EACH. Ripoff

Oh! Buy yourself a 3m respirator half mask and some P100 pink “pancake” filters. You will be able to focus on your welding better, plus your helmet lens won’t fog up with condensation because the mask diverts your exhale breath downwards and out the bottom of the welding helmet:

Respirator: https://www.amazon.ca/Rugged-Comfort-Facepiece-Reusable-Respirator/dp/B00IF7RBS4/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=3m+respirator&qid=1566573219&s=gateway&sr=8-3

Filters: https://www.amazon.ca/3M-2097-Particulate-Filter/dp/B00328IAO0/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?keywords=p100&qid=1566573291&s=gateway&sr=8-2

You can probably find these items cheaper locally at acklands grainger or somewhere. Don’t bother with a different respirator... this one has a quick release so you can drop the mask down and talk to people without taking off all your gear, which is super annoying!

I found this all out through trial and error and hundreds (maybe thousands) of dollars down the drain.

I tried that one and it sucks so bad. My head hurts thinking about it. They are not meant to support weight. :(

I use one of these

https://www.amazon.com/National-Safety-Apparel-H11RY-UltraSoft/dp/B00PG3W2GG

I got it more for the sparks from overhead welds getting on my ears/neck, but now I just wear it all the time. Very light weight and breathes well.

No, in the States unfortunately.

I bought this headgear a while back to try modding: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002VECKU6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 , but the connector where the mask connects is some kind of intricate snap on thing that I don't think would work well with 3d printing.

I ordered the headgear you linked now and I'll look around a bit more for places to print. Thanks again.

(Edit: thingiverse mails finally came through, I ordered in PLA from there)

I know a guy who swears by this helmet he got on the cheap while attending trade school. And Lanse from Youtube (Chucke2009) likes the brand, too. He did a review on a more expensive one, but this one should be fine for a budget starter. I have a Miller one and a Radnor one, both $250+

u/OMW · 1 pointr/Welding

The one I was referring to is an older style model made from coated paperboard like a 490p, but has a fixed lens instead of the slider like the one I linked to. Not sure what that Huntsman model number is or if they still make that particular variant, but the only thing lighter I know of would be a pancake. (The one I'm thinking of is really nothing more than a folded up piece of treated cardboard with a lens and headgear attached, so there's not much to it.)

u/spacepopsicle · 1 pointr/Welding

I really want to get a 2x4 flip lens with a progressive of shades, not sure what gold has to do with it though. Then have a auto dark lens to put in when I'm feeling fancy or whatever

Edit: After snooping through some the comments helmet suggestions, I have quite liked your miller. Found this one

u/CarbonAltered · 1 pointr/Welding

Does he have his own helmet? The miller classic series that has auto darkening is under 100 and it's what I'm using in class right now.

There might be better ones but for 80 bucks if he don't have one it's a great starter.
