Also one of these mounted on the camera. Makes everything in the focal point look so illuminated and everything in the background look so dark that it tends to make scenes look like CGI. I personally don't like them much but for facial photography there really is no better lighting tool. You see them a lot in pop music videos where the singer is wearing big black sunglasses and you literally see the reflection of the light in the glasses. Example

Dental photos, huh?

Well, that implies a macro-ish range (although maybe not true 1:1), while taking photos of people. Since we're talking macro here, I'd suggest a crop camera, which will get you better reproduction ratios or deeper DOF given the same framing.

I'd also suggest getting something like a ring flash.

I'd go with this setup:

  • Nikon D7100. $1200.
  • Nikon 105mm f/2.8 VR micro - a great macro lens with good working distances. $880.
  • Closeup lighting, like this or this. $350-720.

You're well under $3k there. Might even want to get the D7100 with the kit lens (18-105), so you can do more general photography while you're not working.

Remember: lighting is very, very important. You'll get shit photos if you just blow the full $3k on a D800 and bottom-end macro lens with no lights. Mouths tend to be dark. Indoor areas are dark. Buy a good ring flash, and don't skimp out on a terrible macro lens. You need something at least 90mm or longer so you're not hitting people's teeth.

alternatively, you can get an LED (or CFL) ringlight -- popular with youtube and instagram mak,eup gurus (my girlfriend is an MUA, so I got her one of these for christmas)

There are cheaper alternatives like this, though it has less LEDs and isn't nearly as bright, or a slightly cheaper CFL option

On my desk, I have a 14in Neewer ring light on a table stand. It has a little slot ("cold-shoe") to slide an adaptor in there to put your camera on.

This is the closest thing I can find to what I have for the desk light.

This is the stand

And a fun little pro tip, is I use these quick release plates on my ring light and all my tripods so I can quickly and easily move my camera and have it be stable.

All this being said, a single ring light isn't sufficient lighting. I have 2 softboxes, 2 18in ring lights, a light from below me (to prevent shadows) and then floodlights in reflectors lighting the back of the room and lights behind me (in lamps, behind room divider screens, framing mirrors, etc.) those lights also "dance" to music and I love them so much.

Basically, great lighting = good quality stream.

If you want some pics, let me know. My camroom is a bit trashed at the moment, but I can give you the general idea of what the equipment looks like.

I found this ring light in one of the bars lol I know my friend uses a ring light from amazon! I think it’s this one Neewer Ring Light Kit:18"/48cm Outer 55W 5500K Dimmable LED Ring Light, Light Stand, Carrying Bag for Camera,Smartphone,YouTube,Self-Portrait Shooting https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LXDNNBW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_rN25Bb9MHQHRC if I’m not mistaken and I’ve used it to take a few or my photos on Instagram and it’s bomb

I would never buy original. Overpriced as f.

I would suggest:
RAVPower Camera Battery of Sony NP-FW50 ( 2-Pack Replacement Batteries, Micro USB Input Charger, Versatile Charging Option, 1100mAh, 100% Compatible w https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01JLKVLUC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_xNhaK8GEGEYQD

It works like charm! Fast charging, no issue with anything.
I can charge my original battery too. It's small and well build. I currently taking this charger in my small back with a7 and 28mm. Amazing for travel.

It also got many great reviews:)

u/nvaus · 5 pointsr/photography

I go back and forth between extension tubes and diopters depending on the shot. Diopters tend to give the images soft edges, but I think they look nicer if all you need is center sharpness. I also like this thing for lighting: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0031AQ302/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_ep_dp_IRXfzbX3KBSRW

I do more video though than photography. Great video!

u/EvolutionDG · 4 pointsr/photography

Thank you! Well the best tip I can give is to learn how to use a flash well and make sure it's diffused! I use the Laowa KX800 dual flash and I love it. I'm on custom diffuser #3 at the moment (basically a circular softbox) and it works well, but I'm going to investigate how to get the lighting even softer.

As far as the lens, there are so many options out there, I only have experience with Canon 100mm USM and Laowa 15mm macro but I love them both. I also recommend the Raynox DCR250 diopter lens attachment. It can really increase magnification and it snaps on and off instantly.

Here's my general setup:

Hi,

I am starting to get back into my macro photography and I was looking at flashes. Any advice on whether I should get a macro ring flash or a normal hotshoe flash?

I am thinking that I should get a normal hotshoe flash for my Nikon D7100, but I am unsure what type I should buy. The reason for this is that I read that the ring flashes can make the images look very flat. My current setup uses a lamp in the house and the torch from my mobile phone, but I would like to try and move outdoors as well.

I would be grateful to hear any suggestions from you.

Thanks in advance,

u/GlitteronyourFace · 3 pointsr/MakeupAddiction

I ordered it on Amazon. You can find it here. I paid $169.

The main difference between this and the Diva ring is (1) There is no dial to adjust the brightness. It's just on and off. If I want it less bright I move the light farther away. To "turn up the bright" I move it closer. and (2) Diva isn't in the title.

One other thing. This light doesn't come with a stand (most don't so read carefully). However, I had an umbrella light stand that I screwed it right on to.

u/dmpither · 3 pointsr/Beginning_Photography

I really like the Laowa/Venus Twin Flash 800; weird-looking, but very useful, incredibly flexible flash unit, with focus light. I use it with Canon gear, but it's universal. I put miniature softboxes on each flash end when I want diffusion; Neewer Pro Universal Soft Mini Flash Bounce Diffuser Cap for On Camera or Off Camera Flash Gun: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JUPDH5Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_l1EQCb6H500QB

Will be ordering a Macro lens with my next paycheck... Need MOAR CLARITY!

u/luckykarma83 · 3 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon
  1. This is something I have not known I wanted before now. I was doing some research on something I could do to make my macro photography better and this is the most amazing product I have ever seen. If I don't win, I am going to buy this. It will really change how my images turn out! Plus, I want to start selling fine art images, and it would be easier to get really good images if I had this, rather then them being great macro images, but poorly lit. :)

  2. If I got this amazing electric kettle I know I would use it several times a day. I have been wanting this for almost a year now. C'mon...gimme.

Lookin mighty splendiferous today, if I do say so mahself!

I've been thinking of trying this little cheap one for shits and giggles http://amzn.com/B004LEAYXY

Hi /u/aarongough - congrats on the G6 - great camera!

[This article] (http://www.lafcpug.org/reviews/review_diva_ring.html) from the LA Creative Pro Users' Group sold me on multiple ring lights as the way to light a space without a lot of hassle.

The space where I shoot my videos is not as challenging as yours, so I can use one ring light as a key/fill and LEDs for back and hair lights - but with your space, you should be able to set up 3 [ring lights] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B64G2A6/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00B64G2A6&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) on [inexpensive stands] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003PEUA30/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B003PEUA30&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) for less than $600.

With this setup, you'll be able to cover the whole area without moving lights around for each shot.

Hope this is helpful!

Ring lights are a pretty good alternative, though I prefer the Diva Ring Light, which is a 500w light instead of the 300w F&V R300.

Advice: Don't waste your time on cheap LED ring flashes, as they're made for macro work and not for portraiture. They don't have the power to light over any sort of distance, and the colors are usually weird.

If you aren't looking to spend real money on it, something like this or this are probably your best bet.

u/Chuxxx · 2 pointsr/nsfw

That effect in her eyes is from a ring light

Also, I can't hear anything she's saying.

u/kbailey204 · 2 pointsr/Cameras

If you already have a good 50mm lens, I would suggest this combo to get started:

Decent set of extension tubes

Ring Flash

Optional:

Tripod Macro Focusing Rail

Autofocus systems can struggle doing macro with extension tubes so I would suggest manual focusing. Also, try and run a fairly small aperture (f/8 to f/16).

u/DominusDeus · 2 pointsr/Silverbugs

I have a piece of black plastic (a solar filter) I place on my laptop. I put a small black coin easel on it and place the coin (still in the capsule if I can, with one side of the capsule popped off). I have a small cardboard box I place in front of my laptop. My camera is a Nikon D7000, and I use an 85mm macro lens with a light ring attached. I shoot between ISO100 and ISO400 depending on the coin, around f.16, with a 1/60th to 1/100th second or so exposure. I prop the light ring on the small box, aim as best I can to get square on with the coin, and take photos (usually several...). I shoot in RAW format, and compensate for brightness if I need to in Nikon's RAW photo software. Then do further cropping in normal photo editing software, either on my computer or on my phone or iPad (Pixlr).

You can blame the fashion industry.

The ring shaped eye catch light [came from the use of ring flashes in fashion photography] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ring_flash) and is considered attractive and stylish by some people.

If you Google "how to get ring catch light", you'll find several videos and how-tos on how to obtain this effect.

Ring light manufacturers even promote it in their advertising. Here's the Product Description on Amazon for my [#1 Best selling Diva Ring Light] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B64G2A6/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00B64G2A6&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20):

"The 65W 5500k daylight bulb gives great lighting for facial shots or general lighting purposes. Facial photography shows up with ideal 'white ring' in the eyes."

Personally, I use ring lights for soft even, easy-to-carry lighting on my rig (seen [here] (https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOLUldyACrSwTCtuCbiOH4NHfAfjUDC3muuMd8ZCdPSFqWIXN3nJRoRDqtS8Qu10w/photo/AF1QipOLMq_QhB6cMeIcFWAurUGvFc4a86VPthhxZNwE?key=OFBudmVvUHdndnRza2RWWi1vczNscUUxQWVtOVpR)) and in the studio (seen [here] (https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOxV0sghUVHzt2lO7GBQjsp-ra_smFCQ7V7S2LijlC5JFtnPw0yEJ8zzZGuM15xjA/photo/AF1QipPLdoSXclAupU0mmB35N3N1UXtIT9fhdFOPglvN?key=bXFlUmF4T21UZ1lwd0xScE5pWEV2Y01Da0laekhn)), but I'm not a fashion guy or vlogger, so you'll never see the eye catch light effect in my videos.

Hope this is helpful and best of the holidays!

No problem. Glad I could help. I bought this for my light: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GGNK93T/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. So far I like it a lot. I had to put in on a tripod so it would be behind the camera.

As for OBS, you should be able to still find some overlays and such. I never used the straight OBS studio so I don't know how to do that. If you have a way of getting better voice pickup via a headset you already own, I would look into that first before dropping those green backs on a Blue Yeti. I plan on getting one some day but I'm in no hurry.

I guess one last bit of advice is to hide your current viewer count from yourself. It can be disheartening to look over and see a big ol' zero there. If you hide it, you can play like someone is watching since you don't know if anyone is or isn't.

u/Spidor · 2 pointsr/Twitch

You can also try something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Diva-Ring-Light-Nova-18/dp/B00B64G2A6 Well not exactly this one, because it is pricey as hell, but something similar. It does not require to much space. I believe you can attach them to your monitor.

I can't recommend it at all. I picked it up as an impulse buy at B&H for $50. As a flash it works well, except that the LEDs are too far out; unless you zoom in, you'll get a halo effect around the outside. Maybe some people like that, but it ruins shots that would be usable otherwise, like this:

Any word on this Yongnuo Ring Flash?

I've been interested in getting a ring flash for awhile now, but I didn't want to spend the cost (typically up and over $100-400) nor get one that was the big tube coming from a strobe on top of the camera.

$40 seems cheap for a ring flash like this, but it is Yongnuo, and I've been very happy with the remote flash transmitter system I got.

I know it's not pro level, but it seems to be what I'm looking for, and the price is low risk.

Anyone have any experience with this?

There are so many cheap 1080 cameras now that any of them would work. You could even use a DSLR if you wanted. That can link from elgato turns whatever HDMI compatible camcorder into your PC camera. Or you can just get a cheap camcorder and use the webcam for streaming.

For macro this flash is all you will need "below", "there a cheaper alternatives out there, Amazon will give you a list, make sure they work with the camera you have before purchasing", it's on my macro lenses all the time, it does not mean though that I fire it off all the time "I set up one of the camera buttons that when pressed to dissable the flash from firing" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNUH5dCaLMU&list=PLDWvA0qQrZ290b_1j0f_t9Jfnu34TRJKx&t=0s&index=118 , if natural light is right there is no need, but if you want a nice sharp shot the more light the better "but don't overdue it". In the camera flash compensation settings your camera is set by default at 1/250s of a second, which means that you shutter speed will not exceed 1/250s of a second, I don't use this option, since I shoot in manual mode and like to control my shutter, f-stop, and EV settings myself, what you do is go into the Bracketing/flash exposure settings in your camera customs setting menu and change the Flash sync speed setting from 1/250s of a second to 1/250s (Auto FP), this will give you more creativity and help freeze the subject, which is crucial with insects that constantly move "the black wasp was shot at 1/500s shutter speed with no flash used", if you are new to using a flash just stick to 1/250s, then just experiment with the Auto PF mode until you figure out the right settings for the shooting conditions.

Thanks for the kind words!

Each species was different but these shots are between 5 hours and several days. Some flowers opened and closed each day several times, while others took several days to bloom, then wilted after only opening once. The Paperwhite from bulb to bloom was over 2 weeks.

I used a few Tricolor E27 (5 Bulb 45W 5500K) https://www.amazon.com/Photography-Lighting-Multi-Holder-Tricolor-Digital/dp/B00BV2W4GY

Or a Diva Ring https://www.amazon.com/Diva-Ring-Light-Nova-18/dp/B00B64G2A6/

Or some combination of those. I found the Tricolors gave a little more consistent light shot to shot. Although both had some issues I had to fix in post. I suspect I really need a voltage regulator to fix that problem.

This should go into the weekly questions thread.

But anyway, is she using a macro lens? Buying a different camera will not have much of an effect, the D80 is quite good.

I recommend she pick up a cheap ring flash like this and she should definitely be using a macro lens.

The camera should work just fine on auto if you have a flash and adequite lighting.

If it's in the budget, this flash would be even better, and would be more likely to work with less fuss/fiddling.

Exactly what is she finding "frustrating" about the D80?

If she isn't using a macro lens like this one, she probably won't be able to focus closer than 50cm (or 1.5 feet) from the subject.

Lenses have a minimum focus distance. Macro lenses are designed to have short minimum focus distances. (Sorry to insult your intelligence if you already knew this.. you didn't give me much info in your post)

u/Bradison_bro · 1 pointr/askgaybros

Not really.

I'd like to offer you some suggestions for your videos that could improve them a lot, if that's ok.

  1. Audio. If you can, I'd recommend getting a lavalier microphone (Something like this). That'll improve your audio quality quite a bit and pretty much eliminate most of that echo in your room. Another thing I highly, highly recommend for you is music. Get a bit of background music to use in your videos while you're talking, it'll help a lot. There's tons of royalty free sources online for music. Incompetech.com is one, or even YouTube's own audio library.

  2. Camera Video. There's...quite a few things that could be done about your video quality. Intros are fine, but it looks like you used a template online. I always advise against these, as they are a dime a dozen and don't really add much to the video. If you upload fairly regularly I'd just get rid of it completely and just jump right into the topic of the video. I also noticed that your lighting could use some work. Most don't realize how much this adds to a video. I recommend getting a pair of these, softbox lights. They add a nice soft light that looks great. If you want to get a little pricier, these are very popular. Ring lights provide a nice soft lighting that's used by a lot of vloggers.
  3. Game video. I noticed that you just recorded the switch screen. To me, that's below bare minimum quality for games. You need a capture card of sorts that you can plug the Switch into, then record off of the capture card. If you just have that laptop, you could probably get away with using an external capture card, like an Elgate Game Capture. These are able to capture gameplay from any game system with an HDMI out, and the Switch dock has one of those.

Hi there! I personally use a tripod mounted ring light for interviews, YouTube videos and the like. Here is the one I have: https://amzn.to/2oSFpAG But it sounds like you want one mounted to the actual lens. I have seen these during wedding shoots with photographers and asked them about which ones they use. Brand doesn't seem to be the issue for these but they said a cheaper alternative would suffice like this one: https://amzn.to/2CEgHNX
