My recommendation is just two videos that will show you how to blend almost any color set with the technique.

Seriously changed my LIFE! I always looked like a 4year old who was blindfolded did my eye makeup.

Video 1

Video 2

With some practice I was able to use these techniques to do brown neutrals, roses, purples, golds...it really works so well because it lays down how you use three colors to achieve a basic look all of the time. Regardless of the color palette.

Wet n wild actually has drawings on the back of their eyeshadow set and also labels the transition shadow on the palettes, and it also has some palettes that write which color goes where .

I also got a eyeshadow makeup brush set on amazon for just $10 to practice with. Having the proper fluffer/blending/crease brushes REALLY HELP!

Hope this helps because I so feel your pain!

Oh wow this contest is such a great idea! Since my name is pretty easy to do, I decided to make it fun and over the top.

Ok, so I have been struggling with this for years. I tried so many things- different primers, foundations, tools, etc. I have about 10 different (and expensive) foundations, more primers than I can count, and nothing looked good. I am very acne prone, oily, huge pores, bad skin, and fair like you. I looked 110% like your photo. I recently went into Sephora in tears because I was just so frustrated and was given samples of these:

  • Cover FX Mattifying Primer
  • Tarte Amazonian Clay foundation
  • Cover FX drops

The lady spent a while showing me how to apply them and the results were really good. Apply the primer, let it dry, then blot the foundation in with a damp BB, then apply the drops as needed for coverage (giving everything time to dry in between applications). I use a setting powder (Too Faced Primed and Poreless powder rules) and a setting spray too. These products worked insanely well.

Howwevverrrr it all changed when I bought this brush from Amazon. This thing changed my life. I stippled the foundation lightly and it looks absolutely amazing. I seriously teared up when I used it and had smooth application. You don't even need a lot of foundation with it. I don't sweep or smear it on, JUST stipple. I feel so much better about my appearance now.

This is what worked for me, so it might not for you. It's worth a try though! I'm sorry I don't really have any photos to share. Good luck!!!

Get her a good brush kit, amazon would probably be the best place to find something like that because they have decent kits for much cheaper than even elf or real techniques. She probably doesn't have a good brush kit yet, so I'm sure she will appreciate having one. Look at the reviews when you are chosing. I recently bought myself this unicorn kit since I am not well off and my nice brushes were starting to shed after five years. If you get this set, be safe and get the ones with black handles just in case she's not into that sparkly aestethic.

A neutral pallette is easy to work with, I'd recommend one of Kat Von D's shade + light contour quads because of the cute packaging and versatality. Also, they are hella cheap for the quality. A nice black liquid eyeliner would be good as well, I like the Perversion eye pen from UD. If you get her a mascara, go with a drugstore one or a sample size of something since mascara seems to be different for everyone. An eyeshadow primer might also be a nice gift. Elf and NYX make good eyeshadow primers and they are inexpensive. Nordstrom Rack usually has the Urban Decay primer potion for cheap too if you live near one of those.

You could also pack her gift with some little shimmery things from the drugstore. Wet n Wild, NYX, and elf are great. A bright red, black/navy blue or clear with glitter nailpolish is pretty much essential, Wet and Wild is nice affordable while also being decent quality (their eyeshadows are good too). NYX makes decent mascara and blush, as does elf.

When I was a teen, the makeup that I was gifted was usually unusably sparkly and bright. Avoid too sparkly or bright, staples are more important.

u/pineappledaisy · 5 pointsr/MakeupAddiction

I didn't know that, but it makes sense if MAC is changing over to synthetic brushes.

If you're looking for an alternative, I would check out the JAF eye brush set on Amazon, which I heard about from this post. The 239 used to be my HG for applying shadow on the lid, until I bought the JAF set, and now the JAF shader is my favorite.

I'm on mobile, so I apologize for any odd formatting or mobile links!

Since she's already purchased herself brushes, I'd recommend going with something else. How does she store her makeup and brushes? I'd recommend getting a brush roll for her new makeup brushes. Maybe something like one of these: Sephora Ulta Amazon

I think she's going to love whatever you end up getting her, but I'd still recommend getting her something she isn't already getting herself. :)

I have a set from Shany that I got on Amazon that I actually really like and is a great value. I also have Morphe, EcoTools, Elf, and RealTechniques and the Shany brushes hold up just fine. I don't hear the brand talked about much around here but I would recommend! Here's the set I have:

Just patience really. The final thing doesn’t show all the touchups I made while painting. I don’t think there is anything a video can show besides being careful. I literally paid pennies for the brush I used

u/bullcitythrowaway0 · 3 pointsr/muacjdiscussion

Thank you! I ended up getting this to practice with, the reviews say they were comparable (or even better) than Sigma brushes: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0173H85KO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I am going to go to the makeup counters a little more as well and see how much of a difference experimenting with different brushes make, because if my skills are still underwhelming I'm not going to notice anything.

Hopefully by the time Black Friday rolls around I'll have a better understanding of what I'm doing! Appreciate the thoughtful responses everyone!

u/MacNCheesyBeezy · 3 pointsr/MakeupAddiction

I would get a cheap but full set like this before splurging on something you don't understand yet. My main brushes are from an Amazon set like that, the dollar store, Wet N Wild, and Forever 21. I also have some Sephora brushes, but I absolutely do not think they are worth it. These Amazon brush sets are surprisingly good. They haven't broken down at all through use and cleaning. So I started out with those and as I felt I needed more, I purchased them one at a time.

u/tulip09 · 3 pointsr/TheGlowUp

(Part 2/2)

Face:

Foundation - Nars, Giorgio Armani, L'Oreal, and Elf cosmetics (Elf is one of the cheapest and best drugstore foundation out there!) have really good ones!!! ...If you want something that makes you glow, get a sheer coverage foundation ...apply primer under and then some liquid highlight before applying the foundation - trust me, you will glow!!!

Concealer - Nars is the best or you can even try another drugstore holy grail that is cheaper by Maybelline to hide scars, breakouts or dark circles.

Blush - Milani has some really good blushes! So does Sephora brand or Makeup Forever.

Highlighter - this will definitely make you glow whenever the light touches your face!!!! Hahah, MAC and Anastasia Beverley Hills has amazing highlights. Wet N Wild also has very cheap highlights for like $3-5 that are blindingly glowing if you spray some MAC fix plus on your brush and then go in with the highlighter!

Makeup tools:

Really good to have some starter ones to practice with and they make your makeup look better + you waste less makeup.

Elf cosmetics and Real Techniques has some amazing starter brushes... the eyeshadow brush set and the face brush set by Real Techniques is really good for the low price you make for it!

Perfume: Definitely go to Sephora and try out every one of them (sometimes Amazon has sales on luxury perfumes for less!).

Fashion: ASOS, Forever 21, Mango & Target has some really cute pieces of clothing. Check Pinterest and Instagram for inspiration!!! :)

Other: Get the men's Gillette razor has the other person mentioned!!! It is bomb! Haha... I use conditioner or coconut oil down there when I shave.... it's better than shaving cream and it prevents the itching and stuff! lol For legs, I use Nair Hair Remover Lotion (Amazon usually sells 3 a pack for like $15 - really cheap!!!) or Gilette shaving cream for women! Also, don't do this always ...it can damage your teeth, but once in awhile, it won't hurt your teeth... take baking soda and water, make a paste and brush your teeth with it... your teeth will have that instant whitening effect. Don't do this always, but you can definitely do this when you do to those fancy occasions and you gotta make your teeth look sparkling white! lol, works like a charm! :)

Hope that helps!

u/78whispers · 3 pointsr/MakeupAddiction

I think this is the best foundation brush I have tried at any price.

The It Cosmetics Bye Bye Redness is not technically a foundation, though you can do whatever you want with it. It is a very small size to use as foundation, I think, but it does cover redness and I believe it comes with a little brush to buff it in. It looks dark for my NC20 skin but I can wear it alone just over my redness and it blends out beautifully. You use a minuscule amount, so it might go further as a foundation making it price effective.

u/[deleted] · 3 pointsr/Makeup

Having decent brushes definitely helped my eye makeup game, but “good” is relative. The elf set is fantastic, and so are eco: both drugstore brands. Amazon also has a few in the $20 range, and the $35 range that are really soft and good to use.

$10 eye set I love these! They have a bunch of different sizes for eye application.

$25 set also really great and affordable for full face.

I own both and started with them.

u/snowkhan · 3 pointsr/MakeupAddiction

Check out the BS Mall brush sets on amazon, they're really inexpensive but great quality starter brushes! There are a few sets available and they come in different colors, I did a quick search and included two sets below.

Nice. disposable eyeliner brushes are good too, and super cheap, a few cents each. They don't work for larger areas but they work for little highlights.

u/superpony123 · 2 pointsr/MakeupAddiction

I mean a brush brush, a beauty blender is a specially shaped sponge.

I dont consider it a type of brush. I'm not personally a fan of the beauty blenders and brushes work very well for me but you may want to try both. This is the exact brush that I use and this is where I purchased it.. It is very soft, easy to clean, and I haven't noticed anything wonky going on with the fibers. I think it was absolutely worth the money, and it was relatively cheap compared to a lot of high end brushes, while not having a cheap quality about it. It's a good brush. If you are looking for some reaaally nice brushes, look at Real Techniques. I bought that one because I read a lot of good reviews about it and a lot of people compared it to Real Techniques which has an excellent reputation

u/All4Trump · 2 pointsr/MUAontheCheap

I’m sure it will come back sooner or later. Maybe in a slightly different style or color.

Meanwhile, if you search for ‘makeup brush set’ on Amazon, you will find tons of sets with near-5-star reviews for around $15, and some even under $10!

I have heard really good things about this set. - I own just the stubby kabuki from this set and it is excellent.

Here’s one with white bristles (also comes in purple!)

And there’s even a unicorn set .

So really - lots of choices out there. I would just read the reviews carefully. There’s even an app that can tell how how many of the Amazon reviews are fake. I forgot the name of the app, though.

Update: OK, it might be fakespot.com
I’d just heard about it online. I don’t know if this is the app I’d heard about.

(According to Fakespot, the first 2 sets have reliable reviews; the unicorn set does not).

u/HitlerBinLadenToby · 2 pointsr/muacjdiscussion

This set on Amazon is really good and super cheap.

I got Sephora's #10 crease brush which is amazing but discontinued so I'll likely be looking into more Sephora brushes. I was really impressed with the performance of their natural hair brushes (I had only owned their synthetic brushes before).

The rest I have gotten from Coastal Scents. I have hooded eyes, so YMMV, but the Classic Blender Doefoot Brush Natural is my absolute favorite for transition shades. It is extremely dense and I use the sharp edge of it to have super clean lines with my eyeshadow at the outer corner.

The Classic Flat Powder Brush Natural is my other favorite, which is really good for under eye powdering. I love it as a blush brush although that's because I apply blush kind of unconventionally (I have found my blush to look better if I swish this flatter brush back and forth from my hairline to the apples of my cheek rather than moving a rounded brush in circles).

If you want a typically sized and shaped blush brush, Classic Large Powder Brush Natural is wonderful. Super soft.

u/jels · 2 pointsr/MakeupAddiction

Not OP, but I believe they're these!

u/suhseal · 2 pointsr/MakeupAddiction

I wash it and shape the bristled while it’s wet and hang it upside down to dry. I also always use conditioner when I wash them to keep the hairs healthy. Then when I store it I keep them i these mesh sleeves so it holds the bristles in instead of it spreading out and snagging on things.

u/rowanstar · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

If you don't have prime, this set of makeup brushes is the cheapest. If you do have prime. this checklist is the cheapest :)

u/yogurtmeh · 2 pointsr/femalefashionadvice

I had some peeling with the 0.025 cream just using it once a week, so I'd splurge for at least one tube of the 0.025.

I do like the lash serum. (It's generic Latisse, and I've also used Latisse). I got some disposable eyeliner brushes like these as it only comes with one and the FDA says to use a new one each time. A lot of people don't do that though. The important part is to keep the brush clean.

u/PavementBlues · 2 pointsr/asktransgender

Hey there girl! I don't see any makeup answers yet in the comments, so I'll tackle that question.

Makeup Starter Kit

  1. My coming out process ended up moving much more rapidly than I expected and I was out to most all of my friends and some of my family within a couple of months of accepting that I was trans. Once I stopped being ashamed of it, it all just started to flow. The only serious coming out conversation I have left is with my dad, which I'm intentionally delaying because he's going through a lot right now and it will almost certainly result in our estrangement.

  2. My therapist and my friends, absolutely without a doubt. Supportive friends make a huge difference. They let you see what life can be like, which gives you the hope you need to keep going.

  3. I'm not sure what island you're on, but I did some searching and found the Rainbow Family 808, who in turn had the Lavender Clinic listed as a resource. They're based out of Honolulu, but if that doesn't work for you, I'd call the Rainbow Family directly and explain that you're trying to look for a gender therapist and wanted to know if they had any recommendations near where you live.

Good luck! Feel free to comment or PM me if you have any questions.
u/petrakay · 2 pointsr/MakeupAddiction

I got this set and it's amazing for the price! As good or slightly better than my ecotools ones.

u/CerberusSledDogTeam · 2 pointsr/sailormoon

He got them here.

I was shocked when I saw the price tag because they are amazingly soft and do so well to be so inexpensive!

u/OriginalMisphit · 2 pointsr/AltLadyboners

I’d recommend 3 things: an eyeshadow primer, shadow of choice, and a brush. Primer is a paste that makes shadow go on smoothly and last longer than without it, ELF makes a good one that is inexpensive. Just smooth it on your eyelids with your fingers. For shadow look for something matte or metallic. Glitter gets messy so if that’s what you want try to compare and find one with smaller glitter. For a brush, look for one that is rounded at the end of the bristles, and about the size of a chapstick tube if that makes any sense. Like these:

Real Techniques Eye Shade + Blend Set Makeup Brush Kit For Powder & Cream Eyeshadow https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N1MKXEM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_JOD7Cb1JC6GCB

When you do it the first time, remember makeup takes practice. You might not want anyone to see your first attempts, for cleaning I recommend micellar water on s cotton ball, then washing your face however you already do. All of these things are at any drugstore.

u/lizifulwizard · 2 pointsr/PanPorn

I got a full set of pink ones from Amazon. They don’t have the exact one I ordered but here’s a link to something similar!
I’m using the smaller angled brush.
Hope that helps! :)

u/KinvaraSarinth · 2 pointsr/minipainting

This will sound odd, but I've been using disposable eyeliner brushes for detail work. They're shorter than normal paintbrushes (might be an issue for some), but work incredibly well. And they're cheap.

They've been amazing for working on 7th Continent (13mm) minis, and I've actually started painting faces (on normal 28mm minis) since getting these.

u/missdollyleigh · 2 pointsr/MakeupSelfies

I am going to throw this out there but I bought these brushes when I was in college & BROKE. They are actually very soft, not too thin (the bigger ones are actually a good thickness) and for the price a straight steal especially since a good brush can be pricey. http://www.amazon.com/BS-MALL-Synthetic-Cosmetics-Foundation-Blending/dp/B012VN72NQ?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

Ooh! I can answer this. I bought both the 'Brush Guard' ones linked above (from Beautylish) as well as these from Amazon. I travel often (work + fun) and these save all of my prissy Japanese brushes from getting hurt in the bustle. I actually prefer the cheaper ones. They're thinner so they mold to the shape of my brushes better and thus move less (the other ones are stiff and sometimes slide backwards on the bristles).

u/Anitathefab02 · 2 pointsr/Makeup

I literally only use one eyeshadow brush from this Real Technique eyeshadow brush set and it works really well! But I'm also a beginner so for more advanced eyeshadow looks idk how this would work out. This set is also super cheap!

Thank you for hosting!

I recently found a gem of a brush, by a brand that I don't hear mentioned, ever. It's the Beauty Junkees Flat Top Kabuki ! I've never tried Sigma, but I've seen in reviews that they're comparable. Let me tell you, it is incredible! Right now, I use it for powder/buffing purposes, and soon I will use it for mineral makeup.

Also, the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge is SO GOOD for liquid foundation. I adore the shape of it. The pointy tip helps with the application of concealer. I can't gush enough.

And now I'm starting to sound like an infomercial. Brushie brushie (:

I've had that happen from a random foundation brush I got at TJ Maxx! My nose started breaking out and peeling and itching; it's like it was exfoliating my skin and I was maybe also allergic to it. Bad times.

Like someone else said, Elf brushes are great! I also LIVE for the basic EcoTools duo and this Wet n Wild blending brush. I can do pretty much all my eye looks with just those three brushes. I've also got a couple from Sonia Kashuk (which I think is Target-exclusive, so hopefully you're in the US) that are quite nice. And, like others have said, Real Techniques is really nice too! I highly recommend their face brushes and their blending sponge. (I do NOT recommend the EcoTools sponge. I've never hated a sponge more.)

You don't have to spend a ton! You can get a really great set of brushes, curated by you for your own needs, just in the drugstore/Target.

u/TheRecklessOne · 1 pointr/AskWomen

mostly from youtube tutorials (example - searching "simple eyeshadow application" and stuff like that) and from r/MakeupAddiction.

I'd always worn a bit of make up but never really gave it much thought until someone pointed out that I was doing it badly. So then I started spending my evenings for a few months applying/removing/applying again until I got the hang of it.

Some good basics to start with if you're on a budget:

Real Techniques eyeshadow brush set

Real Techniques sponge

Real Techniques face brushes

A face primer (I've had good results with Rimmel ones and Loreal ones). This fills in your pores and gives the foundation a smooth base to sit on.

A foundation that matches your skin tone - this should be something that matches the skin on your neck, not your face, as once you've covered your face in it, you need it to blend into your neck. Note that foundation shades go from light to dark but also from cool to warm. So, if you're pale, you then need to figure out wether a pink toned foundation matches or a yellow toned foundation. This is best applied with a damp sponge - put a couple squirts of foundation on the back of your hand, dap it on the the sponge and then repeatedly "dab" the sponge all over your face until it's everywhere, then keep going until it's blended. It does feel a little silly as you're essentially hitting yourself in the face over and over again, but it works nicely.

Some sort of blush or bronzer to put colour in your cheeks - if you apply foundation and don't add some colour back in, your face may end up looking a little flat. I personally just put a little bronzer under my cheekbones and a little blush on the chubbiest bit of my cheeks. Apply a tiny amount with a medium sized fluffy brush and just keep brushing it until you have a small amount over the area you want it on.

Either a setting spray or a setting powder (translucent) - this is to stop the foundation from disappearing from your face within a couple of hours and kind of "finish it off" - if you're wanting a more matte look, then I'd go for a powder (again, I just get a Rimmel one from the supermarket). If you're wanting a more shiny, natural look, a setting spray is a better shout, but I've never used them so can't offer a recommendation! A setting powder would be applied with a big fluffy brush.

For eyes (if you want to do eyeshadow)-

again, primer. Not cheap, but I buy it in the travel size and it lasts ages - Urban Decay Primer Potion. This makes eyeshadow look more pigmented and bright and it lasts longer and doesn't tend to settle into the creases in your eyes.

Eye shadow. The brand Revolution (you can buy it at Superdrug) have surprisingly good quality eye shadow for the price and they have a big selection of pallettes. I'd recommend buying one in neutral colours (creams and browns) and then watching some youtube tutorials on how to do a simple look. Then practice, practice, practice!

Mascara - I like the Maybelline ones from the supermarket. Best way to apply mascara neatly is to hold the wand still and blink onto it a few times, then hold it right into the root of your eye lashes and give it a little wiggle to coat the roots. If you get it on your skin, let it dry then give it a quick wipe with a cotton bud - this gets it off without smudging it.

Eye brows - I have a little kit from Revolution and I just apply a tiny amount of powder into my eyebrows then comb it through to make them look a bit fuller. Again, if you search for eyebrow tutorials on youtube, you should be able to find something that works for you. Depending on the sort of look you want, you can search stuff like "natural brow tutorial" etc.

I think that covers everything! I can't advise on contouring because I don't do it, but if that's something you're interested in, youtube will have the answers!

u/ashlynn61292 · 1 pointr/RandomActsofMakeup

It's my party! For my birthday, which is in a few months, I would love to receive this contour palette because I need to make myself look like I have a bone structure haha, and I would also love to receive this brush set because I am in desperate need of brushes! Thanks for the contest and happy birthday!

u/wodemaohenkeai · 1 pointr/MakeupAddiction

As long as it's a flat top kabuki, you should be fine. I actually prefer a synthetic cheapy I bought off Amazon because it produces a better airbrushed finish to the BM original brush. Any similar brush should be fine. You don't have to use BM brand.

u/PatitoIncognito · 1 pointr/RandomActsofMakeup

You need some brushes! Real Techniques is a great brand to start with. They have some nice kits for eyes or face and great single brushes like the expert face brush and blush brush. EcoTools is another inexpensive brand for good quality brushes. Have you tried a lipstick before? Try the brand NYX. I'm around your age and I honestly used to think lipstick was for older ladies (sorry!), but I'm digging it now. Like others have said, primer, concealer, and color tattoos would be good items to add to your collection as well. Update us on what you end up choosing and happy birthday!

This is our doberman Bambi

We actually rescued her from a shelter a few months ago. My fiancé works durning the day and has class at night until 8-10 p.m. so our son and I are home alone durning those times. We don't live in an unsafe place, more worries about a deer or raccoons breaking into our home than a person, but I still felt uneasy sometimes. Also we've been trying to have another baby for 3 years now, our son is almost 6 and doesn't require want much babying,so I wanted something that needed me to take care of it,if that makes sense.

Anyway my son and I took a day trip to go see her, I braved the interstate which I have a horrible phobia of and we spent 3 hours there playing with her. And we got to take her home that day. She had an elbow hygroma which is like a fluid sac on her elbow joint, and a pressure sore on her hip bone, which is like a large open sore. This was from her laying on cement. When we got her home we shaved the sore and applied simple hydrocortisone cream daily, it took about 1-2 weeks to heal up and was covered in fur by the end of the month. The elbow was trickier, we made her a elbow pad out of socks and a gel pad and made her sleep on something soft at all times. The hygroma is also gone now.

She's a great dog, lazy most of the time, but ready to play at the drop of a hat. And I feel safe as crap. She weighs over 100 lbs, and is a huge dog. I have no doubt that she would devour a person if they were aggressive toward us.

Edit- Wish list item I desperately need brushes, I've been using 2 mini brushes and a blush brush for 2 years now! http://www.amazon.com/Professional-Makeup-Cosmetic-Brush-Purple/dp/B008JVZMDM/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=2HL07Z6U5H9Z&coliid=I2THE4AV1Y3EXU

I have decided to buy a brush set for eyeshadow. I am trying to decide between Beauty Junkees Eye Makeup Brush Kit and JAF 7-Piece Natural Hair Eye Makeup Brush Set. In your opinion is either set better than the other?
