One thing I have learned over the years is that while quality can be expensive, it doesn't have to be. Also, what one person loves and thinks is the "softest set of sheets ever!!!!" can feel like sandpaper to another person. (OK that's two things. Oh well.)

I have major sleep and texture issues, so I have spent a lot of years perfecting my bedding. After much searching and much cost, I ended up finding out that the Target UltraSoft sheets are my second favorite ever (to some discontinued Lands' End knit, their current knit is not the same.) I love that these sheets come in individuals, so you can buy just the ones you need. On the opposite end of the spectrum, I just got a new pillowcase from Sheex at Bed, Bath, and Beyond, and it is amazing. Someday I will get their Bamboo Sheet Set as my summer/alternate sheets.

For blankets, I'm a big fan of the warm fuzzy ones. Target again has some from a couple of their brands (Threshold and Shabby Chic) but I find they're not quite as good quality as they used to be. I have recently acquired a new SherpaSoft blanket from Bed, Bath, and Beyond which is amazing. It is thick, soft, and warm and happened to be on clearance plus I was able to use one of their coupons for it.

I absolutely love a down comforter, but I'm allergic to actual down. I stumbled across the Pinzon Down Alternative comforter at Amazon, I have had mine for nearly 5 years and it is still in excellent condition. Duvet cover is super personal depending on style, but if you have a thing for flannel, I highly recommend the Pinzon flannel duvet cover as well. Another thing I've had for years and love, the Pinzon 190-gram is my favorite flannel, even above LL Bean and Lands' End.

Due to some surprise issues (hello, holes in my former (not the Target) favorite sheets!) I also ended up going on a spree and replacing some bedding basics last weekend. I have a memory foam topper on my mattress, which means I needed a cotton mattress pad/cover otherwise my topper turned into a heat-generating slab of concrete. I tried something from a local store that didn't work, ended up back at Amazon for the Zen Bamboo Ultra Soft Mattress Topper. Slept on it last night and it was fabulous.

And finally, after a couple of failures, I stumbled across this adjustable! pillow from Coop Home Goods on Amazon, which is absolutely amazing. I like a soft pillow but need neck support, but most pillows are too thick for me. I love that you can simply zip the pillow open and remove a bit of the fill, or add more if you like a firmer pillow (they sell additional fill linked from the pillow page.)

Congratulations on your new house, and good luck with your bedding shopping! A well-attired bed makes the whole experience so much nicer.

I think you're overthinking it. The memory foam will be comfortable and insulating enough on its own. We use a 3" foam folding mattress like this and never felt like we were on the ground or cold.

I'll tell you after a good night's sleep about how well my night goes, but for references sake, I got one like this.

If you want memory foam, try just a good memory foam topper. I have this one on an otherwise normal spring mattress and it is very comfy, and a hell of a lot cheaper than a full foam mattress.

  1. This Mattress topper
  2. My mattress is getting old but I can't afford to buy a new one so I figured this will help and make it a little more comfy.
  3. Honestly I will probably just break down & buy it for myself sooner or later, probably after a few more sleepless nights

Here’s the one I got but it doesn’t look like it’s in stock at the moment: https://www.amazon.com/Best-Price-Mattress-Trifold-Topper/dp/B077BLTB1K

Any trifold twin foam should work! I’d suggest 4” or less for thickness.

This is the topper the review is for. The smallest size is Twin, so it's not for a crib, kid must be sleeping on a normal size bed I guess?

Absolutely get new bedsheets then, maybe a new stuffy, and maybe a squishy mattress topper so it feels different when you lay on it. Consider painting the frame too, but have friends over to help you, but don't do that one immediately.

Make it different. Trust me on that one. Move the art on the walls around too. Create some tangible physical changes.

Mattress toppers got for about $20 for twin size and $100 for king.
They go right onto your mattress. Only downside is they increase the size of the mattress so normal sherss don't fit. You have to buy the deep fitted sheets..... Or just get a Size up.

If you happen to see anyone throwing away their carpet and carpet-padding (if they just re-carpeted their house), those materials can come in handy. Provided they aren't all stained and stinky.

Or, blow a few bucks on cheap foam comforters, that can really quiet things for you.

I need to do some measuring, but I’m thinking two of these side by side each with its own independent mechanism so you can have one or the other or both as a bed. I share most of your sentimates regarding air mattresses. For that reason, this year I decided to spend some extra moolah on getting a nice one. It's made out of a kevlar like material and doesnt leak at all. It's super light and rolls up to the size of a sleeping bag (or less to be honest).

Also I bought a REALLY nice 3 or 4 inch thick foam mattress that fits perfectly on it. Those with a solid sheet and I'm going to be sleeping soundly.

I have this one and I actually really like it. Super affordable too. Made the on-campus beds much more bearable. I have the 2-inch and that's been good enough for my needs. :)

It's no problem ! I look super young irl too so I am usually mistaken for a 20 year old anyways lol. This is the gear I use 85% of the time to sleep, its super comfy:

air mattress

foam pad

yikes! looks like they raised the price of the foam pad since I purchased. I got it for 26$. Any foam pad will do :D

You're going to be hard pressed to find a comfortable futon in that price range. I would recommend trying craigslist, where you could probably find a higher quality item for less money. If you live in a college town, there will be lots of furniture turnover this time of year (and at the end of the semester/school year.)

If you're not into buying something used, ikea has a pull-out sofa bed that's close to your budget, but reviews say it's really bare minimum as far as sleeping comfort goes. You can always get a memory foam mattress pad to put over it when it's being slept on.

If you'd prefer an actual futon-type couch, I'd avoid the cheap ones where the back clicks down to create a sleeping area, like this. They're almost always too small to sleep on and have an uncomfortable bar down the middle. The ones where the frame clicks down but the mattress is one separate piece are better, but more expensive.

Good luck!
