I got over 40 years in cars and never seen anything like that. Some times bras and bug guards are held on with things with "hooks" but have some other type of attachments. They look like soft aluminum, they could be bent over after hooking?

Ok, part 2, the important part. I have poured over all the hardware books in my life as stocking the shop was one of my jobs, nothing like that in any book I have seen. You could pick up a sheet of aluminum at the hardware store, it's very easy to cut and make your own strips. This is what you want to cut them.

If you're talking about diagonal cutting pliers, (or dykes) a good set of tin snips like these would work much better and would likely be easier on your hands. Everyone should own a pair of these anyway, as they really come in handy more often than you would think. If you buy a lot of products that come sealed in that rigid clear plastic these are a blessing. They come in different sizes and some can get pretty pricey, but that $10 pair on Amazon would chew up all the metal in your wallet in no time.

Do they say "drywall nails" on the box? Do they have very, thin flat heads and rings around the shank of the nail?

It does sound like they're the wrong nails. Sounds like someone sent him home with plain steel nails.

If there aren't too very many of them, I'd probably do this:

  • Put in new drywall screws or nails between the existing ones.

  • Dig out and pull out the old nails using a cat's paw, end nippers and shims against the wall to reduce damange from prying.

  • Patch the whole mess.

It's possible that a good alkyd (oil-based) primer might cover the rust spots, but it'll probably always show through. The only thing to do is to get rid of the rusting nails.

I use these:

They are great to have around the house because they really can cut through anything.

Ya, I refer to this style as either end nippers or pincers. They've been part of my daily carry for a long time now. Another version is the Knipex Carpenter's Pincers Very handy to have in the pouch and not too bulky.

He should have used these. No blister on earth can withstand the raw shearing power of a device forged in the raucous, chaotic, environs of a warehouse where raw metal is beautifully crafted into shapes designed to shear through metal as easily as mere scissors through cloth.

I find that I crimp them very well with a pair of dykes. Much cheaper than the specialized crimping tool.

I do keep 2-3 sharpies in my box, and half a pack in my tool bag as well.

Regarding the center punch, I have one in my truck but I'm not doing a lot of fabrication so it only comes out 5% of the time if that (my box is damn heavy as it is).

I use this kind and they work fine.
