My Zojirushi 3 cup model goes down to half a "cup" according to the instructions at least. And that's a special cup that came with it; it is about 3/4ths of a real cup. It works great and you've only made approximately one serving of rice with half the cup.

u/SteelTheWolf · 13 pointsr/EatCheapAndHealthy

Dude... If you have a crock-pot, then you have the world. Search for just about anything followed by "slow cooker recipe" and magic happens. A whole chicken? Done. Red lentil curry with carrots and sweet potatoes (a personal favorite)? Check! Lamb Stew with peas and potatoes? You bet'ch! If you buy a rice cooker to go with your crock-pot (I have this one that I got from Wal-mart with a discount thanks to Amazon price match) you can greatly expand what you can do. Obviously, most of this stuff is good over rice. But the cooker I linked (and most others) can steam food too. You can cook chicken stew in the crock-pot and serve it over rice with a steamed summer vegetable medley on the side with only two machines.

Also, I'll put in a plug for /r/slowcooking here. Those people are some hungry, creative, and crazy bastards.

I think I'll organize by equipment?

tiny fry pans

  • eggs and fried egg related dishes. Bread + egg + ham + cheese slice is real good.
  • French toast
  • stir fry
  • ramen
  • hamburger

    Tiny saucepans

  • ramen
  • boiled eggs
  • blanched veggies
  • lentils (if you soak overnight them they take next to no time or water to cook)
  • egg noodles (I know egg noodles can be cooked shallowly in water)

    Quarter sheet pan like this

  • roast veg
  • hobo packets
  • baked potato
  • pizza
  • biscuits
  • no knead quick bread

You can also get small rice cookers that be used daily for one person. https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07Q81ZPGV/ref=psdc_678540011_t4_B00KDNKTJG

Instant Pot Mushroom Wild Rice

Full recipe post with notes here-----> https://veggiechick.com/instant-pot-mushroom-wild-rice/ =)

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted vegetable broth
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely diced
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, thinly sliced (I used cremini, white button or baby bella)
  • 1 3/4 cups water
  • 1 1/2 cups wild rice blend (combination of black and basmati rice)
  • 1 teaspoon Spanish paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme (or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme flakes)
  • 1/2 cup raw cashews
  • 3 tablespoons nutritional yeast
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk

    INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Set Instant Pot to the Sauté function. Add vegetable broth, garlic, onions and mushrooms. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until onions are translucent and soft. Turn the Instant Pot off.
  2. Add the water, rice, Spanish paprika, salt, black pepper, and thyme. Stir well. Replace the lid, then set the Instant Pot to  Manual/Pressure Cook (at high pressure) for 22 minutes. *Make sure the Instant Pot is set to the “Sealing” position.
  3. Meanwhile, in a high powdered blender, add the raw cashews and nutritional yeast. Process until fine (powder-like consistency).
  4. Once the Instant Pot is done cooking (the time has elapsed), let the pressure release naturally (about 15-20 minutes). When ready, open the lid, add the cashew powder and almond milk and stir well. Add salt and pepper to taste. Keep this dish in an airtight container in the fridge for up 5-6 days. Makes roughly 4 (1-cup) servings.

Since we're all throwing in appliance suggestions, allow me to recommend a rice cooker. For 30 bucks, you can throw in a cup or a few of uncooked rice, fill with water up to the line and let it do its thing. Perfectly cooked rice in half an hour without having to pay any attention to it, and it'll keep it warm for a few hours if you don't use it all right away.

Not quite as fast as instant noodles, but just as cheap and more satisfying, in my opinion.

And of course, congratulations!

EDIT - here's the one I have. It's not pictured, but it also has a tray for steaming vegetables while it cooks the rice. This one is pretty minimal; literally one button, and it's optimized for white rice. Some of the fancier ones have different settings for different types of rice, if that's your thing.

u/krasnovian · 5 pointsr/anime

It should definitely not be mush. Are we talking like mashed potatoes consistency, or oatmeal consistency? Because if that's the case it's being overcooked or cooked with too much water.

I'd recommend getting a rice cooker, small ones come pretty cheap. This is similar to the one I have, but this one costs a little more. You can get them as low as like $25 from Amazon.

u/Successful_Algae · 5 pointsr/Cooking

Nope, the grit's right it's a steaming basket. The reason it looks weird is because it a part of their rice cooker. Here is the link for the rice cooker it's a part of.

You can try buying one of those car plugin rice cookers like this one:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N6EVZ6Z/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_WcHzDbFJCW8D0

It can cook and keep food warm. You can probably do some light cooking with it if it can cook rice in 30 mins.

Try buying fresh or frozen vegetables and steam them. Salt + pepper. Soups. Etc.

A lot of 99 cents store carry fresh discounted product now with some meat options as well. It's also a good idea to come in and buy certain products close to its sell by date. I know Ralph's has slightly old produce for $0.99 a bag.

As for losing weight I suggest slowly add changes to your lifestyle. Don't try to do too much at the same time, let yourself and your body adjust. I would say you're already kickstarting yourself by wanting to be healthier! Great job man!

Maybe consider a calorie deficit diet if you don't want to cut off carbs and sugar. I use the app lose it, you can put in your weight, height, and how many lbs you wanna lose a week and it gives you a daily caloric limit to eat under.

As for exercise, I would just start walking as a way to burn fat. Starting at 30 mins. a day, 4-5 times a week sounds good.

u/dominicaldaze · 4 pointsr/Cooking

I've wondered this: i first learned that this was ok, but i was using an older, cheap rice cooker. I would sautee some aromatics first, then add the rice, sautée, then add water and cook. But last year I got my mom a nicer rice cooker (zushinya or something I can't remember) and the manual explicitly said not to put anything but rice and water in there. Does anyone know if thats bullshit? Is it just Japanese snobbiness? The only thing I could see going wrong is burning something or if somehow the pot got infused with other flavors.

edit: in case anyone was wondering, it was this model. Not too cheap, not too expensive, it's been really handy. Better than the cheap one I used to have!

u/Seraphice · 3 pointsr/oddlysatisfying

Here is one model. It's pretty pricey. You can definitely make mochi by hand, but you have to put in quite a bit of work to get the right texture.

u/likwidfire2k · 3 pointsr/fitmeals
u/xiccit · 3 pointsr/answers

Yeah but duel purpose and quicker. Also probably cheaper since they're everywhere second hand. Also you'd need something to put on the hotplate as well. If you're trying to eat on the cheap get a 10$ rice cooker and rice. It's cheaper than ramen, and healthier. Mix in beans for protein. We've all been there man. Plus they can be used to cook lots of stuff. .

The first thing to look for is that the brand is Zojirushi. Don't listen to the people saying that the $15 rice makers are just as good. They've never owned a higher end fuzzy logic model.

If you don't need a huge capacity, this and this are probably the best ones on the market.

u/mizzlebizzle · 3 pointsr/TrollXChromosomes

IH + rounded bottom, cooks rice evenly, nice and compact, made in Japan instead of China. (Some Zojirushi models are made in China.)

For consistent rice, it's good to use a scale to weigh out the rice and water. 1合 rice is 150g and I use a water to rice ratio of 4:3 by weight for koshihikari, so 200g of water per. This will vary depending on the kind of rice you cook though. Make sure to weigh it before washing.

u/Chimie45 · 2 pointsr/explainlikeimfive

Here in Korea, most people use Cuckoo brand, In Japan I had a Zojirushi. These in America seem to be quite a bit more expensive than here. (My Cuckoo you can get for $60 here, but is $250 in the USA)

However, you can find some reasonably priced ones if you look around.

I recently got the digital stainless steel 8-cup Aroma Rice Cooker & Steamer from Walmart

Which is also available on Amazon: https://amzn.com/B007WQ9YNO

I find it perfect for personal uses and great for steaming other vegetables.

I have been very happy with my $35 3-cup Panasonic rice maker. I bought it because a friend had the exact model and I liked how her rice turns out. I cook anywhere from 3/4 cup to 2 cups of rice and it works great every time. The cooking bowl is removable and easy to clean, but I always us plastic utensils and hand wash it to prevent scratches to the non-stick surface.

https://smile.amazon.com/Panasonic-SR-G06FGL-1-Step-Automatic-Cooker/dp/B01DGQVX46

One thing that some people don't know about cooking rice is whether you should rinse or soak the rice. Do some homework on the rice you cook. I rinse my "plain old white" rice before putting it into the cooker. I put the rice in the bowl, add water and swirl around with my hand, then drain. I do this a few times before adding measured water for cooking. I believe it helps prevent the nastiness at the bottom of the cooker and the "skin" you can get on the top. I even got a small splatter screen to use for draining out the rinse water.

u/cowscankill · 2 pointsr/videos

I want this. I don't even know what mochi is or how much this costs.

EDIT: Found it, $220~ on Amazon. Same as this one.

Looking at a couple of recipes I found, I think this cooker actually could be used for tadik, since it has a sauté function. It wouldn't be a single step, of course, but it would be a single dish/appliance.

BTW, I'd never heard of tadik before now. It looks seriously delicious. I'm going to have to try it sometime soon. Thanks! :)

It's a Black & Decker! I got it for $20 from Walmart, here's a link: http://www.amazon.com/Black-Decker-RC3314W-14-Cup-Cooker/dp/B008YS1V62/ref=sr_1_4?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1427605265&sr=1-4&keywords=black+and+decker+rice+cooker

It works beautifully. The nonstick function is perfect and the cooking is only about 20 minutes. My only complaint is that the veggie steamer lacks capacity, so I always find myself trying to compress the lid and then weighing it down with books and protein powders. But I usually have mostly vegetables and I'm too lazy to actually cook them myself, so I don't have much room to criticize.

Aroma Housewares 8-Cup (Cooked) (4-Cup UNCOOKED) Cool Touch Rice Cooker (ARC-914S)

No way should you be paying almost $100 for something like that.

u/211logos · 2 pointsr/vandwellers

Yes, a rice cooker could kill your starter battery. Indeed any load could, but it's a bigger one and so if your battery is low to begin with, etc then it could finish it off.

There are 12v rice cookers. I really don't see the point, as they take 30 minutes at 100W for the ones that can work through a cig lighter, but you could do it. I'd recommend just running it while running the engine as you drive around. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N6EVZ6Z/ref=psdc_678540011_t3_B01M4Q9NIQ

I recently bought a new rice cooker, ended up doing some research during the process, and will be glad to share some of what I found out.

  1. It really depends on what you want; i.e. steamer, delay functions, simmer, etc.
  2. Make sure to read through the reviews on Amazon, it was big help in finding a brand that everyone seemed to agree on.

I went with the Aroma brand rice cookers. Every model I looked at had fairly high reviews for their simplicity, ability to clean, and functionality.

The one I ended up buying was being sold at Target for about $25.00. It has a delay function, multiple rice settings (brown, white, etc.), the warmer hasn't burnt the rice yet, steamer basket, saute-simmer function, pan is really easy to clean, and will cook 2 to 20 cups of rice.

Here is the Amazon page for it

The Target site doesn't seem to have this model anymore, it may have been discontinued, but it might be worthwhile to call your local Target and see if they might still have one. Otherwise I would go with Amazon or check your local Walmart. Hope this helps.

    Tl;dr
Aroma rice cooker has worked out far better than I expected for such a reasonable price.
Edit: Goes up to 20 cups of rice and added the saute-simmer function.

u/a1icey · 1 pointr/Fitness

i agree about breakfast (though i recommend unsweetened oat cereals and whole milk) and the nuts and fruits. but more importantly, I make very healthy food in a frying pan all the time. it is still miles better than fast food because you are only putting good oil on it. so buy a bottle of canola oil. buy thin cuts of steak, chicken breast, fish filets. put some salt on them and then fry them in the pan. buy extra the first few times you cook each kind of meat, cut the first one you make open and make sure it's not pink inside. always aim to undercook.

boiled vegetables (kale, chard, broccolini, broccoli, mustard greens, spinach) and leave them in the water for as short a period of time as possible. dash of olive oil, dash of salt.

buy a rice cooker (http://www.amazon.com/Cuisinart-CRC-400-4-Cup-Rice-Cooker/dp/B0001XAG8W) and use this rice: http://www.lundberg.com/products/rice/gourmet_rice_blends/Lundberg_Wild_Blend%C2%AE.aspx and cook it with a tiny bit of butter and salt added.

They work better than a lot of solo slow cookers in that they have real low and high settings instead of just getting to the same temperature a two different rates.

u/egotripping · 1 pointr/Cooking

I have this model Zojirushi and it makes perfect rice every single. Not one grain has ever come out burnt, and it stays good in the pot all day. It's certainly expensive for a rice cooker but I eat enough rice to make it worth it.

Not having to take something metal to the bottom of the bowl to clean it and scratching the teflon changed rice cookers for me.

I have this rice cooker. Makes fool proof rice everytime. Good for like 2-4 people, or even 1 with enough for fried rice the next day. That being said, I'm asian and rice is a staple for me (like I eat it almost every day). If you don't plan on making a lot of rice perhaps it would be best to get the instant pot and make your rice in that.

u/Phollie · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

If you can't do a Zojirushi, the next best one is a Cuckoo. This is a link to their least expensive model.

$79 on Amazon Prime with free shipping, but it will take 2 months to get to you. The pro is that it will really be for life with this brand. Keep in mind this is a brand designed to last families of morning, noon, and night rice eaters daily for years.

Third best brand available is an Oyama priced at $69. It will cost more with shipping, but I don't know how much. Oyama rice cooker. If you can pick it up from a local bed bath and beyond or have them order it for you from the store you can skip shipping fee.

Edit: I reread your post and realized I wasn't considering your specific needs. You need a low capacity and small rice cooker. Then get this Tayama Brand Cooker. It makes brown rice, white rice, oatmeal, and if you learn how to get the amounts right it will even make a fluffy pancake cake thing. like this guy I do this with my Zojirushi lol. But I also have a family of five.

These are the three items to start the whole process. Mix the waxes as Ozzie describes. Also, as he says, the amount of wax you have to work with is enough for a very long time so initially, sure it costs more than a bottle of regular chain lube but over time it’s definitely a big money saver. It did take me a minute to find the right paraffin oil for the best price, but that was the one. Make sure to strip the chain really well first. Best bet would be to just start with a new chain, strip that, and then wax it.

As mentioned, they're both electric pressure cookers, and also "multi-cookers" meaning they can do more than one thing. The Power Pressure Cooker XL has been featured on shopping channels I think so has probably sold a lot of units, but probably not more units than the Instant Pots. Two other well known brands of electric pressure cooker are Cuisinart, and the Rival/Crock Pot company has recently gotten into the game too.

The PPXL's are "okay," I've heard, but would be good for you to read the Customer Reviews for that brand at amazon I'd bet.
And compare to the Customer Reviews and ratings for the Instant Pots (the LUX 6 qt would be somewhat comparable though smaller, but the 6 qt DUO60 is still the best selling IP, and IP has 8 qts sizes in both DUO and now LUX versions --but bigger isn't always better for all of us):
DUO60 https://www.amazon.com/Instant-Pot-Multi-Use-Programmable-Pressure/dp/B00FLYWNYQ
DUO80 https://www.amazon.com/Instant-Pot-Programmable-Pressure-Steamer/dp/B01B1VC13K
LUX60 https://www.amazon.com/Instant-Pot-Muti-Use-Programmable-Pressure/dp/B01MFEBQH1
LUX80 (this price is unusually high right now, probably because most sellers at Amazon have temporarily run out of this model):
https://www.amazon.com/Instant-Pot-Programmable-Pressure-Steamer/dp/B071VCMK97
Power Pressure Cooker XL, 8 qt model:
https://www.amazon.com/Power-Pressure-Cooker-XL-Stainless/dp/B014HF6Q2E

The Power Pressure Cooker XL's are different in some ways from the Instant Pots though, and one big difference is the stainless steel inner pot IP's come with (PP XL's and most other brands come only with an aluminum inner pot, coated with a non-stick coating...no non-stick coatings are permanent though so the inner pot will have to be replaced eventually, and many people also worry about the coatings coming off into foods during regular use and especially at higher temps).

IP's are known for being very sturdy and well made as well.

They both have modes for slow cooking, and presumably the PPXL can also saute but it's missing the Yogurt mode (which also proofs bread dough) that so many people end up wanting.
Some of the models of Instant Pot also have more modes than the DUO (and LUX) models.

In a pinch it could be good to have something like Uncle Ben's "ready rice" around - have brought on vacation and it's surprisingly great, def cheaper than takeout. I also want to add that I have a rice cooker and an instant pot that complement each other for the exact issues that you describe. This top rated one is $30 on Amazon right now.

Here's the kind we have: http://www.amazon.com/Zojirushi-NSRNC-18A-Automatic-Cooker-Imprint/dp/B00005YXC1/

It's a bit more expensive (north of $100), but is still going strong after close to 10 years now. Cooks the rice perfectly every time. My Mother in law has a bigger version of the same brand uses hers three to six times a week and has been using it for over a decade without problems.

I have this Black & Decker cooker, got it for $25 from Target (or Walmart maybe, I don't remember.) Great little rice cooker for quickly making some fresh rice to go with a meal. Non-stick cooking bowl, washes incredibly easy by hand (seriously, just throw some hot water and a dab of dish soap on a sponge, wipe, rinse, done), and comes with a steamer tray that has performed much better for me than the unfolding UFO things that you put in a normal stove pot.

As for washing it in the dishwasher, I happened to do that today--not sure I would recommend it. It's tarnished the outside, but the non-stick inside seems to be okay (can't tell without making some rice.) It's super easy to hand clean, just don't be dumb like me and leave it out for a week with water inside so mold grows in it. >__<

u/melbournecowboy · 1 pointr/EatCheapAndHealthy

Buy yourself a cheap rice cooker or steamer!

We have a rice cooker, similar to the one above, that sat on the shelf for years without being used. Saw somewhere (no idea where??) that they are good to steam chicken breasts in. It had a little rack that fitted nicely inside.

About once a week we steam chicken breasts for our kids lunches. Keep it very simple, add cold water to just below the rack, place in your chicken breasts, add some herbs and spices and a little salt. Turn on, sometimes if the chicken is a little thick, just run it through twice.

We shred our chicken whilst it is warm, if you are looking to cut it, wait until it is cold and cut with the grain, otherwise it will fall apart.

Goodluck.

u/tb21666 · -4 pointsr/PressureCooking

Because the Instant Pot is basically a glorified rice cooker with sidewall reinforcement at its design core, if you bother to compare/examine them both in-person, side-by-side, as I have.

The NuWave Induction Pressure Cooker is my personal preference for use with my Ti.

EDIT: Wasn't intended to be a dig or an insult. Simply a firsthand observation.

Maybe instead of down-voting because you're butt hurt someone told you something you didn't know/never noticed before, go look & see for yourselves..?

Doesn't effect the Instant Pot's performance pressure cooking overall, but it doesn't change the facts of its design, either.
