We have something similar to these [Super Jumbo Cards] (https://www.amazon.com/S-Worldwide-NA-Super-Playing/dp/B002LHA74O). What you lose in sensible hand management you gain in pure stupidity.

I'm at work so I don't have time for a detailed response, but I have been running a TtB game for about two years now, so we're finally nearing end-game. I started a post series here but slowly stopped, but you can read my first two posts here and here

My players have a mix of D&D background/White Wolf background, so a mixture of RPGs. The game is heavier on plot/role playing in style, but there's nothing stopping you from running 2-3 combats a night if you really want and your PCs are prepared for it. Combat in TtB is deadly compared to D&D, though. A D&D character can have 16-20 wounds and 10 damage is generally a lot for a starting character. A starting TtB character, however, will generally have 4 wounds (up to 8 if they min/max for HP), and 1/2/3 damage is typical for an attack, but 4 in a single shot is not unheard of. It's really hard to actually die in this game, however, because you tend to fall unconscious at <0 HP, and the only way to actually die is to take a severe critical effect, so that's how it's somewhat balanced. Every other month, Wyrd produces a Chronicle, and every one since #14 has included a TtB one-shot. The Chronicles are all free on Drive Thru RPG, so this can be another source of content if you aren't interested in making your own.

Regarding Fate Decks, I actually use a regular playing card deck, but I also made my own character sheets that include the conversion. I actually use this plain deck instead of a Wyrd fate deck, and it works very well. Note each PC needs their own deck as well for a twist deck, but it's possible to occasionally share if none of the cards overlap.

Harrower is focused on buffing you and your party each day. It's a luck of the draw kind of class where the cards you draw during your Harrow session at the beginning of each day cause various effects.

To perform a Harrowing you just follow the spell Harrowing. The class gives the spell to you even if it's not on your spell list.

You use the tower features in order to buff your spells mid combat through Harrow Casting. It's very reliant on what cards you draw so sometimes you'll feel really weak while other times really strong. It's not optimal but it's fun to roleplay out imo.

It's particularly fun to use with class archetypes that utilize cards such as Card Caster Magus or Cartomancer Witch.

It is best used with an actual Harrow deck. But there's a guide on how to translate regular playing cards as Harrow cards. As someone who has a Harrow deck I'd say it's well worth it, I love the art on the cards and there's even a Pathfinder module built around using it.

If you're looking to max out the flavor of this character, you could buy a real harrowing deck

I love my Virts. Admittedly, I personally don't usually play with them, but they're designed to be an effortless shuffle and easy to prestidigitate. They're a decently cheap price, only about $16, and definitely worth it. They're beautiful.

u/_C00KIE_M · 2 pointsr/cardistry

They are kinda hard to come by and are expensive cards. They are called Virtuoso SS16 Playing Cards
Amazon has some for 30$ a deck.
If you have the time I would suggest just market sniping on eBay waiting for a good price.

Let me know what you end up going with.. I have one more suggestion, these are not as well respected as Kem/Copag but I actually rather like them (I own decks of all three brands.) They are Bicycle Prestige and very affordable for a plastic deck. I don't actually know why they aren't as well liked myself, the early production (when they came in a plastic box) were not good but the ones in the paper box I like a lot. Also, you can pick these up at Walmart or Walgreens so they are something easily obtainable.

I've been wanting some new cards. Thanks for the contest!

My most embarrassing item is a deck of Mass Effect playing cards. This is embarrassing not because of how nerdy it is but rather that I actually dont own a single deck of cards.

They're a bit over the 5 dollar limit so I'll just throw up a nerdy book that I should own but dont still Speaker for the Dead

Edited for links

I pre-ordered this deck after seeing it on Amazon a few days ago. They'll be released on Feb. 8. https://www.amazon.com/Bicycle-Dragon-Playing-Cards/dp/B07MJHKGSM

For the initial idea and rapid prototyping phase, I highly recommend using physical cards. Buy some blank cards, get some markers, and start experimenting.

I used cardstock, but it required lots of cutting to get the right size. I just searched and found these. There are also these but the reviews say they're narrower and longer than traditional playing cards, and hence won't fit into standard sleeves properly.

I'm glad I came across your thread, because I have more ideas for my card game I'd like to test. Using physical cards is actually a ton of fun too, since it's really easy to just sit down with a friend and playtest.

You may be resistant to the idea of using physical cards, but the playtest-iterate cycle is so much faster with physical media. And it's the playtest cycle that is the bottleneck at the start of a game design project. Physical cards get your gears turning in terms of the game's actual design, rather than getting hung up on implementation details, which could happen if you take a code-centric approach right from the start.

They make blank face decks of playing cards, FYI. Get a sharpie and you can write whatever you want on them.

We like SAY ANYTHING (the regular box plays 8, the family edition plays 6. Technically, you can combine to add the extra boards to accommodate 12 if needed.)

The game is most fun when players realize that they dont have to put the "right" answer, but what they think will make the moderator laugh or like best. Lots of great discussions, laughs, and easy to learn/ jump into with no setup or confusion.

Really an underrated game that is really fun. And at less than 12 bucks on Amazon for the core game, its a steal.

As I said, already, for the top 10 games you can probably get a good deal online. But, stray from that and the deals aren't as big. My gaming habits tend more towards casual, family and friend style games, which may also make a difference.

Forbidden Island - 16%

Gloom expansion - 15%

Say Anything - 12%

Munchkin - 16%

Tsuro - 19%

MLP Trading Card Game - 9%

Bananagrams - 21%

Scrabble - 15%

Apples to Apples - 0%

Oz Fluxx - 23%

Those are the last 10 games I bought. The biggest percentage is 23%, and that was only a $3 difference. The biggest dollar difference was $5. For differences that small, i'll buy local. It supports the local guy and I get it now, not several days to a week from now.

Also, the reason I don't agree with the original statement is because (as is shown in my personal examples) the online prices aren't that much less for the games I have purchased lately. And, I have never called in to any of the local stores and found that they do not have something in stock that isn't also out of stock online. So, I also disagree with the assertion that they cannot compete for item availability.

Again, I use the bookstore analogy. Sure, I may be able to get a better deal for a book online, but it's not going to stop my from heading to Powells. And, except for the most obscure of titles, i'll probably find a copy of it at Powells.

One of the AquaPod Kit things for water. That will give them a good way to get a lot of water stored (assuming they know soon enough beforehand) without taking up a ton of space or needing to be rotated. The big benefit here is that not all of the planning, prepping, or space that would normally go into water storage comes into play. It's great if they want to get into that on their own, but if they aren't this is a good backup.

For short term food supply, these have a 5 year shelf life and provide a good amount of calories. It looks like they're on sale right now, so if you wanted food for 2 weeks that would still be good for a long while down the road these wouldn't be a horrible way to go. I'm actually buying some myself because of the sale.

I have one of these utility wrenches in my basement in case I need to shut off the gas or water in an emergency. If they own their own place or will soon it's something handy to have that most people won't think of.

If they don't have them already, smoke/carbon monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers are smart preps, if not exactly as fun as some other things you could get.

Flashlights are always useful in an emergency. Some small rechargeable ones like these with good reviews are great because they won't need to worry about alkaline batteries. Headlamps can be awesomely useful if you have to do some work in the dark as well. There is a battery concern there, so if you make that list of when stuff would need to be rotated toss the batteries for this on there.

Since it's for hurricane preparedness, some duct tape, plastic sheeting of some sort, and a decent weather radio would make sense.

Then some sanitation items as well. Emergency Essentials has a 'complete kit' to cover a lot of that, but some of it may not be quite right for them, so they also have the by-its-self bucket toilet as well. As a companion product, a large hand sanitizer bottle would be great for a lot of messy jobs. They do have expiration dates, but if this is accurate then they still hold their effectiveness for some time after. Both plastic gloves and some leather palmed work gloves would be good additions in this category as well.

Hope some of that helped.
