The screen was $3 from a thrift store, $6 plexiglass from home depot, and this window film.

u/wumbothot · 44 pointsr/aves

honestly its super easy...

u need

  1. Use a utility knife and a straight edge to score and cut the acrylic sheets. U don’t need to cut all the way through just enough to snap it over the edge of a table. Should be left with six 12” squares of clear acrylic.

  2. Dry build the box (i just used masking tape to hold it together) and just cut the corner guard to the needed length for each side.

  3. Apply the mirror film to acrylic

  4. Dry build the corner guard into a box (ur trying to achieve a frame) and place the mirrored acrylic into place, EXCEPT the top piece. That u just set on top of the frame.

  5. Lay in the LED strips (just tape them in place for now). Theres a way to do it where u only need to over lap 3 times, its impossible to cover every edge without overlapping.

  6. Ur practically done! Just go back and use the mounting tape to set everything in place. For the top piece, use velcro on the corners and just stick it in place. This will save u a lot of frustration and time (trust me).

Thats pretty much it. I kinda just started making it and winged it the whole way. Longest and hardest part is cutting the acrylic but its not that bad. Whole thing took me abt 2 trips to home depot and 3 hours over 2 two days (mirror film take 12 hrs to set). All and all, it was really easy. It helps to have someone help build, but theres nothing u really can’t do by urself. Hope u guys enjoy! reply w questions abt stuff n ill try to answer

ill edit this post later to include the amazon links to the LED strips and include pictures

    Edit: Added links

OP, you could try something like this that could offer you privacy while still letting light in!

u/Nulpart · 15 pointsr/raspberry_pi

just check amazon canada, the same window film is 150$ in canada. wtf! https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07PWK9PKN/

u/ElusiveViolet · 11 pointsr/woahdude

I also have these, same effect and super easy to apply. Window Film 3D Static Decoration Self Adhesive For UV Blocking Heat Control Privacy Glass Stickers,35.4x78.7 Inches https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KM4UY32/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_5hXcAbJXSNRRK

u/redhandfilms · 9 pointsr/DesignMyRoom

You could add some window film to help block the heat. Something like this.

HIDBEA UV Window Film Heat Control One Way Glass Tint for Home | Reflective External Surface | Daytime Privacy Protection | Static Cling Sticky Black-Silver 35.4 Inch x 8.2 Feet https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DB8GW4S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_2CKCDbRNJD3N9

i use decorative window films like this as tank backgrounds. here's what it looks like on an empty 20 gallon long.

u/no-mad · 5 pointsr/InteriorDesign

Amazon has transparent window stickers. Here are two I like.

So in order to achieve the sunset look (and the pic really doesn't do it justice) I attached this:
Amposei White Frosted Non-Adhevise Privacy Window Glass Film for Bathroom Bedroom 17.7 by 78.7 inches https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01FLVKLR4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_54AdzbAGZ3Y9N
as a background. I back light the background with a cheap clip on desk lamp clipped to the stand.

Moving in to my new place soon. It has this huge window with two sections. I'm not sure what kind of curtain/shade should I install. If I use a roller/roman shade, does it go all the way down to cover both sections? I'm also considering putting privacy film like this for the lower section, so that I can keep some privacy but still allow some light in.

u/Doopuy · 3 pointsr/wine

I had the same issue and bought this blackout stuff on amazon. You can custom cut it to the fridge and had worked perfectly. And it looks good.

u/GrandmaGos · 3 pointsr/gardening

Get some removable window film. You can see out, they can't see in.

https://www.amazon.com/Adhesive-Privacy-Frosted-Decoration-Removable/dp/B072FP1M4H

It holds via static, so it's basically a huge window cling. It comes in different patterns and styles, you can google around.

u/Rachtrott · 3 pointsr/Advice

If you are unable to use a curtain or something else to cover the windows, there are window film coverings that make the glass frosted or opaque. Here’s a link to some...

https://www.amazon.com/Mikomer-Adhesive-Decorative-Removable-Decoration/dp/B072FP1M4H?th=1&psc=1

These are removable and don’t have adhesive. Also I can’t imagine it would be difficult to trim them to fit your window.

Hope this helps! 😊

u/kateesaurus · 3 pointsr/houseplants

Just as a side note, I bought this last year and have really good success with it. Easy to apply and keeps the light coming into the bathroom without our neighbors seeing anybody naked.

Window Film

u/CasualNerdAU · 2 pointsr/vandwellers

What about the perforated window wraps ? Used mostly for advertising but it's stealthy and cheap, wouldn't help at night when there's more light inside than out though.

https://www.amazon.com/One-Way-Perforated-Privacy-Window-Adhesive/dp/B01CPKZSGS

u/entology · 2 pointsr/Aquariums

I'd remove that Tetra sticker, get some sort of background on it (I prefer solid colors, or that vinyl frosted glass look). As far as aquascape, I would move the wood in a bit from the left side and bring the crypts back closer to it. Get some Crypt Parva for the front and some Blassii for the back and have an all crypt tank.
Just my ideas for some simple tweaks.

u/shiplesp · 2 pointsr/dogs

Yep. I have this one that I like very much. But there are lots of options to find one you prefer.

u/Morella_xx · 2 pointsr/mildlyinteresting

Mine also reflects light and doesn't look like I'm running a grow room behind it.

u/SouthernInflation · 2 pointsr/IndoorGarden

I'm not sure which rays plants utilize. I have this film on my north-facing bedroom windows in PNW with low-light tolerant plants (pothos, zz, variegated snake).

I also have a large south-facing bay window with mini blinds and am using large plants as my privacy screen. Though it's tricky finding plants where the leaves won't burn with direct sun.

u/fabulousflute · 2 pointsr/beyondthebump

We use this paper that sticks on the window plus blackout blinds (Wirecutter has recs here) plus blackout curtains (And here’s Wirecutter for blackout curtains). Gets the room really darn dark! We also put electrical tape over any item that emits light—air conditioning buttons, on light for baby monitor, etc.

u/ILIAS-KY · 1 pointr/RASPBERRY_PI_PROJECTS

You can just use an old monitor and ad a tint to it, like this one - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BMLCWR8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

That what I did and it still looks good. I also added google assistant by using this kit -

https://www.amazon.com/Google-GOOGLEAIY-V1-AIY-Voice/dp/B075SFLWKX

Kip in mind that this is much harder to set up than just the smart mirror.

u/Epledryyk · 1 pointr/RoomPorn

I have a bedroom whose window faces south and is at the end of my main hallway. I put up those vinyl window diffuser things and it scatters the light around into a nice glow instead of the usual sharp beam which, given the angle, is mostly wasted - have been thinking for a while that I could get transparent yellow vinyl and turn that white light into something warmer.

u/teeone · 1 pointr/MouseReview

In that case: Blackout Window Film, Static Cling Window Tint 100% Light Blocking Glass Film for Privacy, Nap Time, Night Working, Heat Rejection, Baby Room and Day Sleeping (Matte Black, 17.7x78.7 Inch) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BS6H73W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_pHS-BbK1QFYRH

You can definitely paint too - black should be easy to get a even coverage, however the masking of the top and sides could be difficult.

u/SillyNluv · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

Something like this for daytime

HIDBEA UV Window Film Heat Control One Way Glass Tint for Home | Reflective External Surfa... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DB8GW4S/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_tai_-6vCDb...

And curtains for nighttime?

u/orange-blossom · 1 pointr/DesignMyRoom

Can you use door curtain panels like this?

I agree that privacy film would be the easiest option, and they make it in cute patterns: one | two. You can even go for a stained glass look: one | two | three.

u/ChanguitaShadow · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

This stuff would be perfect for you!

u/Milkslinger · 1 pointr/IllegalLifeProTips

OP here's some polarized window film. $25 on Amazon. Should tone down the brightness

HIDBEA Heat Control Window Film Anti-UV One Way Privacy Reflective Glass Tint for Home Static Cling Screen Stickers Blue-Silver 35.4 Inch x 8.2 Feet https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07P9JFYW8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_SEetDb8RNEQK2

Or by all means shoot at it...

u/firstnameryan · 1 pointr/MagicMirror

This is what i used - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077P4T128/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Might be able to get from amazon shipped to you. I just used a piece of plexi glass. Local hardware store will cut to the size you need. Cost about $12.

u/MrFrogy · 1 pointr/comicbookcollecting

No, you shouldn't have to black out. Here is an example of what I used. 91%, so they should be fine if they don't get direct sunlight. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077P4T128/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_i4hXDbVMY244D

I have also used this on my display cabinet. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DPDVXJY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_17hXDb6R6B4Z8

u/morgan_mayhem · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Congratulations on the new job!!!

You should try this Big Train Chai. It is like drinking Christmas. You can mix it with water, milk, or milk substitute. It's good for mornings or evenings. You can make it hot, cold, or blended! By far one of my favorite beverages (coming from a barista who has tried countless kinds over the last twelve years).

I would like one or two rolls of this decorative window film. My back door has windows that make me shiver every time I walk past it at night 😱, but it's too dark during the day with blinds, and curtains won't stay put! Same goes for my bathroom. Two small windows with plastic blinds. They need an upgrade badly! Edit: Look how pretty this reviewer's door turned out!

u/Jondoe20161203 · 1 pointr/teslamotors

I used this with the mesh cover to block out sunlight completely.
Total Blackout Window Film: 100%... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0725G9KS2?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

u/vankorgan · 1 pointr/sandiego

I'm not sure what silicon is, but I'm assuming you already looked into privacy glass backing?

u/polezo · 1 pointr/lasercutting

Will something like this work?

Here's the rest of the design BTW. Emoticon heart is gonna be replaced with a heart made of grand kids thumb print like this, and the ampersand will be fixed. May also engrave rest of grandkids thump print hearts on top in the wood.

So, fully wood top, wood bottom, windows cut in other 4 panes, 4 frosted panels, 3 with etchings, just plain frosted in the back, or maybe I'll add the kids name or something.

Thanks again for your recos.

u/Gigglybutt · 1 pointr/houseplants

It depends on the window film, some you can see out of, others you can't.

Mine which casts rainbows everywhere, I can't see out of.

This one or this one should allow you to see out of them.

u/feelingthis53 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I know that there are window films for normal windows and door panels, with and without designs, patterns, frosted, etc. If you type in "window privacy film" on Amazon you'll see a bunch. That would probably be a good start!

Example: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HTGRXSY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_qH1cBb0079G9E

u/agent_of_entropy · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

Nope. Just giving you a jumping off point. I use BDF EXS15 EXTERIOR Window Film Privacy and Sun Control Silver 15, Dark. This is totally not what you need, though.

u/Kaiakazai · 1 pointr/cosplayers

This link is silly but some mirrored film pulled tight between some thin black craft foam that has the mask itself you should get the iconic eye shape look I think. Have you hit up YouTube for some "how to make a Spiderman mask"? It may take a few videos before you fine the one you like.

Also buy more materials then you need and accept the first try or two won't look so great. I had to remake a lot of stuff before it looked kinda OK but I also suck at crafting things.

u/_Emberly_ · 0 pointsr/AmItheAsshole

Could you get a reflective cling type thing to put on your window? Something where you can see out fine but the neighbors can't see in. I have this on my bedroom window.

Edited to add a link of what I'm talking about: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07P9JFYW8/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_cANgDbX6ZRSVW

There are other less cool, but more affordable options. Contact paper + sharpies or fancy printed window films. Can cut them so there are uncovered portions and covered portions. Lots of other creative ways to achieve the same effect.
