Yes! I can't stress this enough. After dealing with shitty cheap printers (with absurdly priced ink cartridges that would print only three pages including one that was a 'test' comprising of an advertisement for itself), I finally realized that an $99 laser printer is a deal (I like one with auto duplexing - which means it prints both sides of a page. Automatically). Especially when you can buy a high capacity toner cartridge.

Listen people, I'm writing a book. I print out hundreds of pages in drafts and ideas and crap in addition to normal printer stuff. I bought my laser printer (B/W) over a year ago. I replaced the toner once (the included one with a high capacity one).

It just fucking works. Sometimes, I put a plate on top of it and probably spill some crumbs up in there.

New printer don't care. New printer don't give a fuck. New printer just prints whenever I ask it to.

Edit: I'm semi-convinced that I read somewhere it's NOT ok to promote products or brands on reddit. So for those who really want to know, please PM me and I will link you. Also, if someone can refute my strong conviction that this is against some rule I at some point read, please do. For everyone else who has responded, I will PM you. :)

Second edit: updating price - I misremembered what I initially paid. I thought I paid $80, it was actually $99.

Third edit: One person reassured me there is no rule against this, so hopefully they are correct. I got the brother HL-2270DW. It stacks up well against other products / brands, it's pretty easy to set up and network (wireless is nice!) and the auto duplexing is a HUGE bonus. Also, it's still reasonably priced on amazon. I don't give a fuck that it isn't color. Don't need it to be.

The high yield toner cartridge is also a great buy.

Edit four: Found the HP Inkology videos. on Amazon. This is what ultimately enraged me enough to buy a laser printer in the first place. It's also hilarious. Enjoy!

This is a brilliant scam on the part of Gillette. Those cartridges will cost you thousands of dollars over the course of your life, but they send you the razor when you turn 18 and get you hooked.

Do yourself a HUGE favor and buy a good DE razor and a blade sample pack. You'll get a closer shave and save a bundle of money.

Basic starter kits (you might want to go for a better razor?):

It's a patented steering wheel lock. People had been using chains and whatnot for ages for this purpose, but this thing was like, specifically designed to lock your steering wheel.

It was super popular when I was growing up and I guess it's still around:

Then i would highly recommend the book "Atlas of Remote Islands - Fifty Islands I Have Not Visited and Never Will" by Judith Schalansky. The book itself is a really crafty and great looking object, and the maps are beautifully.

Each map is accompanied with a story about the island, with what i suspect is varying grade of truth.

Get it on amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/Atlas-Remote-Islands-Fifty-Visited/dp/1846143489

We're expecting them to be easy to put through conditioning and be turned into the most effective fighters, developing good combat reflexes and executing orders under stress. The officers and NCOs leading these kids tend to at least be in their mid twenties.

The logic is you take the most effective age group and make them the most effective fighters and that way you minimize casualties.
This book is a good read and covers a lot of the psychology of it.

If you are just looking to dip your toe into the waters then pick up this guy from Amazon for $2. It will get to your house in about two weeks since it ships from hong kong. During that two weeks hit a local walmart or other appropriate store and pick up a pack of 10 safety razor blades also for less than $2.

Use some Barbasol if you don't have a shaving cream preference (you said beginner!) and go very slowly your first shave or two. As you learn the direction that your beard (or other assorted body hair) grows it will become easier to get cleaner shaves with less passes and less irritation, maybe a month tops.

If you don't like it, then using this method you're out less than $10.

Edit: I recommend the cheap Wilkinson Sword type razor blades to start. Once you get the hang of it pick up some Feather blades off of Amazon if your local stores don't sell them. Don't start with Feathers though you might knick your head off.

My DVD sets that I bought around the time episode 3 came out have the original theatrical version included. (I watched them all when I was getting excited for episode VII) the quality was pretty bad but it was definitely the original cut.

Edit: found them on Amazon if anyone is curious. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000FQJAIW/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1482287254&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=star+wars+dvd&dpPl=1&dpID=51u3YmzYxNL&ref=plSrch

This is actually the optimal way to drive. Every bit of road should be used. You may seem like an asshole if you're the only one doing it but ideally everyone would do it. It leads to better traffic flow. Source is somewhere in here:

So I'm kind of lost. I own Episodes IV, V, and VI on DVD, and all three came with a second bonus disc that have the original theatrical versions on them. I don't know whether or not they're remastered, but I wouldn't complain about the quality, they're just as good looking as I'd expect from any DVD. Everyone seems to go on about how they can't be purchased except on laserdisc or VHS, but that simply isn't true. I got these at Target maybe three years ago, and they're completely legit. Turned in my old special edition trilogy to a used store and bought all three again to have both versions. Are they somehow different than the originals?

i have first hand knowledge of what its going to feel for him, and its going to be fucking bad, real bad and there is nothing he can do about it. You can't drink milk to help cool it down, you can't piss the heat away, you'll try and sit in a cold bathtub and your weiner will be on fire.

It's electric, no oven required.

It basically cooks food for a long time at a low temperature. Great for stews and soups, also rice pudding is pretty great. It required a lot of moisture, so you're limited to a certain type of dish, but it's awesome in that you dump in ingredients in the morning, and by the evening you have dinner. Also, they're cheap.

This is really interesting. Do you have any responses to what Lt. Dave Grossman writes in his book? In case you haven't read it, you can pop in to a book store and catch the first couple chapters if you like; that's the part I'm referring to. I really would love to hear something from someone who disagrees with him and actually has an experience to back it up instead of an armchair opinion.

Hey everybody, buy one of these: Amazon (BW Laser)

It is, and I can not stress this enough because I have thought about it quite a lot, the best purchase I have ever made!

For an easy $100 dollars, you will never have an error, paper jam, or even run out of toner, the lazer printers version of ink (for around 4 months). Seriously, I just printed out a printer diagnostic report and after a couple thousand prints I have had 3 errors, all my fault.

Plus, you can flawlessly print wirelessly, double-sided, and incredibly quickly.

Please, if you want to call yourself a redditor, you must own a laser printer.

The Phillipd Norelco BG2040 BodyGroom Pro is the best grooming purchase I've ever made. No snags and does a great quick job at shaving and/or trimming everywhere.

Yep, the book Traffic: Why We Drive the Way We Do does a good job explaining this. Regardless of whether you feel it's fair to merge at the end it is faster for everyone and when people try to block people from merging or merge way early it creates backups that can echo for miles.

Try shaving with a DE Razor - This video randomly stumbled upon convinced me to make the switch.

$3 for a starter shaver

20 blades (40 actually because they're double edged) for $7.00

Both are free shipping. Just need to get a brush and shave soap at the corner store. No razor burn and the experience of shaving becomes somewhat therapeutic.

Sure, good pepper spray cans have, you know, safety guards. You can always go with the alternative, though.

u/Suhail24 · 15 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

Yup, pick up one of these and you're golden. This has lasted me that last two years of university so far and there still plenty of ink left! I was lucky to get one of those for $50..but amazon has deals on these so very often.

Found a "loose leaf" version of this textbook for 1/5th the price, also on Amazon: here. Also, if you search for fluid mechanics - there are more than a dozen titles. Makes me wonder why did it have to be the $950 version vs all others.
What is it - more fluid? Or such mechanics? Wow

My room mate used to eat my food. Well used to until I put this in some carne asada I made. I took him to the hospital where the conversation I overheard was hilarious.

"How did this happen?"

"I ate some food my room mate cooked."

"well is he ok?"

"yeah."

"well then stop stealing his food."

Apparently they deal with this type of thing a lot being in a college town.

Get one of these plastic strips and some rubber gloves.

For me it's cheaper and more effective than drain cleaner to remove the accumulation of long hair. If you're still having problems then you need a plumber to snake your drain.

My ex did this constantly, and had the nerve to claim that some combination of my facial hair and shaving cream were the reason the sink kept getting clogged. No way those nasty clumps of two foot long hairs we keep pulling out of there could have anything to do with it, right?

On a side note, a long plastic thing with barbs on it often worked a lot better than drain cleaner.

You're confusing "not perfect" with "not good". You're utterly delusional about the direction that society is headed. And, further, you don't even seem to know what "first world problems" are.

Not just Arabs: you have to be trained to kill. To minimize the psychological hesitation in the moment. To put rounds on target (on people) instead of just in the vague direction of people. Turns out humans just don't like to kill other humans (or at least at scale).

Some books a Marine recommended to me once: On Killing and Training for the Fight. There are criticisms of both books but it is a continuing field of study.

u/IMLOwl · 127 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

Get one of these, plug it into your car in the port hidden under your steering wheel, download app called Torque, get error code, google error code, see if it's something you can fix yourself (often it is).

Edit: These only work on Android. You can buy dedicated units (also cheap) or you can buy an iOS version that costs 4x as much. Similarly cheap priced models claim to work on iOS, but I have yet to see anyone actually get one of them to work.

u/GardenGnomeOfEden · 1 pointr/AdviceAnimals

You should get an OBDII diagnostic tool. I bought this one. You plug it in under your dashboard and it gives you a code which you can look up to see what is wrong with your car. It also gives you the option to cancel the check engine light.

u/too_spicy_for_soros · 2983 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

Hey guys, this is the textbook - as you can see, it is really $950 for a used hard copy.

Reddit loves to fact-check, so I'm sure you'll find that you can buy the looseleaf version for $160, but if you check the reviews you'll see that it's been printed with no diagrams, making it almost useless (this is confirmed by someone I know irl who bought it for the course. This is also the version that our bookstore carries for $200, amazingly). You'll also see that you can buy the online version, which is nice, but for fluids you need lots of tables to use during tests and since having laptops open during tests is too much of a liability, the professor only allows hard copies of the tables for tests.

I'll be using a pdf version of the book (not one from Amazon, that's all I'll say...), and printing out the tables for the tests. If I'm not allowed to do that I'll just drop the course, because there's no way in hell I'm buying the $950 hard copy like she is pressuring.

Oh, and here are screenshots of the course syllabus showing that we do actually need the book, and yes it is only for a few weeks (4 actually, not 6 - the first 6 weeks are with another book which is sold for $215 at our bookstore)

One paper does not 'prove' anything, but I did look at it, and I looked at the law and economics literature in general and it seems like there is indeed a concensus on there being both gender and racial bias in the us justice system.

here

here

and here

Here is a nice review on the issue of gender and crime. Among other things they looked at FBI arrest statistics which show that males are arrested with much higher frequency than females. I checked the official statistics for my country, Norway

>Female perpetrators are still rare, but are nevertheless more common than
before. Out of a total of 307 000 sanctioned in 2007, 66 800 were women,
which represents 23 per cent.

It appears we also might have a judicial bias according to the following from same article:

>Approximately 9 per cent of new inmates in prisons are women. However,
women are given shorter sentences than men, which means that only just
below 6 per cent of inmates are women. The corresponding figure was 3 per
cent 25 years ago.

So the bias emerges from the fact that although 23% of perpetrators are women, only 6 per cent of inmates are women. I feel we now have established that the US juidicial system and possibly the norwegian are biased towards women. But it is also clear that women commit far fewer crimes. And this holds true across cultures, although I honestly can't find a good source for it, if you find one let me know.
The gender difference in crime is there. And there have been many attempts to try and explain it, from many different perspectives, including many different evolutionary explanations. Here is one example.

Whenever something is a cultural universal it is a strong indicator that something biological is going on. If something is specific to certain cultures (like the oppression and social inequality of black people) it is more likely historical cultural and socioeconomic explanations.

I admit I am probably biased towards a biological explanation than a sociological, or historical explanation because it is closer to my field. I do think it's because of biology, but there are no interdisciplinary concensus on this, (as far as I know, I am no expert on the subject).

Lastly I recommend Steven Pinkers book the better angels of our nature. This is probably the most famous and comprehensive examination of the history of violence. Pinker has this to say on the subject of gender and violence:

>Violence is largely a guy thing. In all societies, most of the homicides and assaults, and the preponderance of rapes, are committed by men, together with virtually all the tribal warfare, which is often motivated by the abduction of women or revenge for past abductions. Boys in all cultures indulge in far more rough-and-tumble play than girls do, and grown-up boys consume more violent entertainment, have more violent fantasies, and are more hawkish in their opinions and voting patterns. This is not to say that women never commit violence or are always dovish – just that there’s a large statistical difference, particularly when it comes to certain categories of violence, such as the establishment of dominance or the carrying out of revenge. The biological explanation for this psychological difference is straightforward: In virtually all mammals, males can reproduce more quickly than females, so males take greater risks to compete for mating opportunities than females do.

The main problem with subjects regarding gender is that it is highly political, making intellectually honest discourse very difficult. There is massive statistical evidence that men are more violent, and more prone to crime than females. anthropology, sociology, economics and law, psychology, are some of the disciplines that have tried to answer the question why this is. I think that biological differences is by far the most likely explanation, although it is probably a mixture of different ones. Hope this helped to illuminate my position.
PS: I just realized some of my sources might be behind a paywall if you are not affiliated with a university or read scientific journals as a hobby/profession, let me know if you need me to email you pdfs.

>I'm sorry how is the treaty of Versailles a good thing? It directly [lead] to WW2.

It didn't directly lead to World War II. The subreddit /r/badhistory has a pretty good rundown of why.

>Also today off the top of my head - North korea human rights issues

Their current leader's human rights record is way better (or, more accurately, less worse) than his predecessor's.

>chinese human rights

See above times ten.

>the entire middle east situation

The situation is bad there, but it's been a lot worse in the past.

>the Ukrainian crisis

In which very, very few people have died.

>i feel current diplomacy is useless in major situations.

Here's an interesting chart of war deaths over the centuries.

Note the biggest decline is among interstate wars (ie, wars between countries). This is in part due to diplomacy. When people can talk out their problems, they are less likely to go to war.

Two books on this I highly recommend:

I'm no hippy. In fact, I'm probably considerably more hawkish than the average redditor (supported the Iraq War, supported air strikes on Libya, still think we need a no-fly zone over Syria, disgusted by the deal with Iran). Still, diplomacy does work. It's not as sexy, interesting, or dramatic as war., but it can work.
