We like it because the whole thing comes apart and is dishwasher safe. You can buy off brand filters on Amazon too which are significantly cheaper than the drink well brand.
It sounds like you don't have a cat any more, but they make cat doors with microchip readers for this use case.
Amusingly, the features list mentions that it has "simple one button programming for up to 32 cats", so I guess it's useful even if you are the neighborhood kitty collector.
