I'm going to attach a list of phones after this I would recommend. However there's one that isn't on the list because it's normally $299 but right now is on sale for $179. So I'm putting that one at the top here.

BLU Pure XR P0030UU 64GB Smartphone (Unlocked, Gold)

$179.99

  • Asus Zenfone 2 | Amazon listing | Specs |

  • Huawei Honor 5X | Amazon listing | Specs

The Honor 5X is the weakest option (I'm still counting the Nexus in the list, but since you're already looking at it, it would be redundant to link it), but it's also the cheapest, and it has the best build quality. The largest con is (subjectively) the software skin.

I believe the Zenfone 2 is more powerful than the Nexus 5X (x86 (the Zenfone uses an Intel processor) vs ARM processor architectures is a frustrating comparison for me to try and do, but the Snapdragon 808 (used in the Nexus) is a bit...lackluster), and it has a larger screen/a lot more storage/RAM, but it doesn't have the largest amount of developer support, and the software is (again subjectively) relatively bad.

Unless you're looking to save money, I'd say skip the Honor 5X, it was listed mostly for price. If you want a larger screen and better performance on paper (as well as an SD card slot), get the Zenfone 2. If you want stock Android, fast updates, and solid root/ROM/developer support, get the Nexus 5X.

>Edit: Huawei Honor 8 for 290 best buy open box?

$290 for an open box one is not great deal considering it goes for $300 brand new at Amazon.

Can vouch for the Honor 8 though. Totally love mine. It's super fast, the battery life is quite good, the camera is awesome, and I like the software quite a bit.

u/halzen · 5 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

The Ace 2 is pretty good for ~$200, but here are some alternatives in the price range that you might like more:

Sony Xperia U: Same price, better build quality, and better performance across the board. This upgrade is pretty much a no-brainer.

LG Optimus L9: Same price again, but you'll need to buy a MicroSD card to get the most out of this device (half of its internal memory is taken up by T-Mobile bloatware). The camera isn't particularly impressive, but the battery life and build quality are best in class.

Nokia Lumia 620: If you're willing to consider a Windows 8 phone, this is probably the most well-rounded and well-built device in this price range. It's seriously the nicest low-end phone I've ever held. The biggest drawback is the fact that it is a Windows 8 phone, really.

u/PolarisSONE · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

Hey, thanks for your recommendation, seems like the G5+ and the ZenFone 3 Zoom are the two contenders for me! Is the G5+'s camera that much worse than the ZenFone 3 Zoom? It seems like everything else is better for the G5+, and I mean my OPO is 3 years old, so at this point any new phone will have a camera that's "good" by my standards anyways haha! For the G5+ I'll have to buy this one new on amazon (https://www.amazon.ca/Motorola-Moto-Plus-XT-Unlocked-Display/dp/B06XRKQSY7/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1496333116&sr=8-3&keywords=moto+g5+plus), or if I go used, it'll be this one (https://www.amazon.ca/Motorola-Moto-Plus-5th-XT1687/dp/B01MR2ZFBI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1496333172&sr=8-1&keywords=moto+g5+plus).

The used one is so much cheaper, and condition is "Like new", and it's fulfilled by Amazon, so I'm really tempted..

Thanks!

u/Charming_geek · 2 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

I've never spent more than $300 on a phone, so I'm won't be able to give you the best recommendation there, except to say the Moto Z Play looks like a solid choice for battery life. For storage, you MIGHT want to look at the Moto G5 plus - not quite as good battery, but it's only a few months old and has fast charging (which might help with the lower capacity battery) and is $299 for a 4GB RAM/64GB storage model (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MR2ZFBI/ref=twister_B01NCYZTP4?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1)

What I WOULD say is that you might be able to save money if you guys are T-mobile, you might want to check out mintSim (https://www.mintsim.com/plans/). I use them and am pretty happy with their service. They use T-mobile towers (so very decent coverage), but you pay for your service upfront which saves you a bunch of cash. Currently got a deal for paying 3 months upfront, getting unlimited talk and text on all plans with either 2GB ($11.67/mo) 5GB ($16.67/mo) or 10GB ($20/mo) of data per month.

the [Sont xperia z5 compact] (https://www.amazon.com/Sony-Xperia-Z5-Compact-Unlocked/dp/B01AUAOI7A/ref=as_li_ss_tl?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1484182435&sr=1-2&keywords=sony+xperia+z5+compact&linkCode=ll1&tag=dimz04-20&linkId=4b2eaea8928e7c1b5b43e60803169151) has a better battery life then the xperia x but not by much, where the xperia x has 2620 mah the z5 compact has 2700 mah. other phones with front facing speakers that has great battery life are 5 inches up. If you are looking into getting any above 5 inches, the best would be [zte axon 7] (https://www.amazon.com/ZTE-Axon-unlocked-smartphone-Warranty/dp/B01FUF1JKE/ref=as_li_ss_tl?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1484182663&sr=1-2&keywords=zte+axon+7&linkCode=ll1&tag=dimz04-20&linkId=6e899b69d5dde882ee41d2c476123d94) at 5.5 inches, high end specs such as: snapdragon 820 processor, really good battery life of 3250 mah in comparison to the other phones mentioned here, expandable storage, android 6 os, 4gb ram, 20mp primary camera with a display of 2160pixels.

u/7stringsoflove · 2 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

That's different than the G series right (this)? Looks like the E5 was just announced. I don't see it for sale anywhere but I can hold out as it looks pretty sweet.

The Honor looks tempting as well.

u/TunakTun633 · 3 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

First, the S7 and HTC are worth about the same amount of money, so the S7 is fosho a better bet than the HTC.

Second, the S7 is genuinely better than the S6 (and HTC 10), with leagues better battery life, but only if you get the Exynos variant. The one you get from US carriers has a Snapdragon, and is barely better. (In fact, it's slower than the S6!)

I'd make an effort to get one. Look at the below Amazon link.
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Galaxy-S7-Smartphone-International/dp/B01CJSF8IO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1485499389&sr=8-1&keywords=galaxy+s7+international

The Exynos S7 is $500 new-and $410 used-on Amazon. That's Z Play money; there's no comparison if you're buying new. Whether you're buying new or used, the difference in price is $100. You're getting an amazingly better phone for it. It's also available on eBay and Swappa, and one will show up on Craigslist every now and then.

If, for whatever reason, you can't get the Exynos S7, get the Z Play. Read the DXOMark review-the camera's not bad, just a lot worse than what you're used to.

EDIT: To answer your question more directly, I had an S6 and got 3 hours of SOT. I had an Exynos S7 Edge and got 8 hours of SOT. Theoretically, I'd get 6.7 hours of SOT from a regular Exynos S7, which is waaaaay better than the S6. Most importantly, the radio drained the hell out of my S6's battery when I wasn't using it-this wasn't the case with my S7.

The honor 9 is great. It has a fantastic camera for its price, decent software and a good battery life. Its available in amazon.de for around 300 euros. https://www.amazon.de/Honor-Smartphone-Display-Speicher-Android-blau/dp/B071KCGJR8/ref=sr_1_4?s=telephone&ie=UTF8&qid=1519235643&sr=1-4&keywords=honor+9

How about the [mate 9] (https://www.amazon.com/Huawei-Amazon-Alexa-Leica-Camera/dp/B01MYRABC3/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&qid=1518782037&sr=8-1&keywords=huawei+mate+9&linkCode=ll1&tag=ptablet-20&linkId=b27701b1e4fcf5689d24b342576530a9) if you don't mind the price, has a powerful battery life, good processor performance and other specs. Other best phones for rooting like the moto g5 plus and google pixels first versions under that price limit.

u/jimbob_9245 · 2 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

I think you would like the Wileyfox Swift the Wileyfox Swift has the best specifications for the money in that price range and is a well-built phone. Also, since the Wileyfox Swift is a reliable brand name you shouldn't need to worry about encryption like you would if you had bought a sketchy Chinese phone.

u/Tospt · 3 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

(this is an unlocked 3GB version, not 2GB version of T-mobile or Sprint variants)

get this instead. bigger screen than honor 7x, 5ghz wifi available unlike honor 7x, and fast charging (usb c). most of all, it's not huawei and it can be used it with all 4 carriers. Also if you listen to music a lot then yes, this is a way to go. also band 71 supported unofficially.

Considering that you won't buy the gold version, I'd take a look at this. That's the cheapest I can find it for, although I've never seen this website before, so I can't say for sure if the phone is used/if the website can be trusted. I would recommend that, if you really want the HTC 10, you should wait until the next HTC U Ocean/HTC 11 is announced. Hopefully that will lead to a price drop. Otherwise, I would go for a OnePlus 3 or3T, or even a Galaxy S7 which can be found on [Amazon] (https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Galaxy-S7-Smartphone-International/dp/B01CJSF8IO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1491357331&sr=8-1&keywords=galaxy+s7+international) for $440 USD. Those will all be comparable to the HTC 10 in performance, if not better, and will be quite a bit easier to get a hold of. If you're going after the HTC 10 for sound quality, then check out the ZTE Axon 7, which goes for $400 USD.

I love the HTC 10, don't get me wrong, but it's awfully hard to find at that price point. For $600 CAD, you're better off going with one of the other phones listed.

u/GiveMeNews · 3 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

Your best option for the best camera under $200 is the Moto G4 Plus.

https://www.amazon.com/Moto-Plus-4th-Gen-Unlocked/dp/B01DZJFYLC

If you can swing it, and are serious about battery life, then get the Moto G5 Plus for $229. Better low light camera performance, longer battery life, and faster processor.

u/Kevanness · 2 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

Keep in mind that if you buy a Amazon Prime Edition the bootloader is going to be harder to unlock on the Blu R1 HD and I don't think you can unlock the Amazon Prime Edition of the Moto G4. I recommend getting the Nextbit Robin, it's made almost completely of plastic which makes it really cheap at $150 even though it has a Snapdragon 808 (same as Nexus 5X), it's also easy to install a custom recovery and gets a lot of rom support and it also works on AT&T.

u/Drunk_Panda_456 · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

I would recommend the Huawei Mate 9. It is $136 CAD over your budget.

Another option that is in your budget is the Samsung Galaxy S7.

They both have good battery life and great cameras.

u/Onethrust · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

I know this is slightly above your budget, but this phone is known for having a good front facing camera

BLU Studio Selfie 3 -GSM Unlocked Smartphone -Gold https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XYCGBGJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_x6SeAbR6TQMEB

BLU Studio X8 HD - 5.0" GSM Unlocked Smartphone -Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EYT1URO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_f8SeAb29X295D

u/kaijen · 2 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

$200 total with no subsidies will get you a smartphone from late 2011 to early 2012. Your best bet would be a used Galaxy S2, HTC Amaze, HTC One S, HTC Sensation, or Optimus L9, which are all 4.3" or larger. You may also find a Nexus 4 in the high $200s.

Anything newer still carries a significant premium. As you've seen, you can expect a Galaxy S3 around $300 to $350, and a Note 2 around $400 to $450.

Swappa used for all prices.

Edit: Amazon has the L9 new for under $200.

u/CIGSfV · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

I'm thinking new and stock Android beats older and TouchWiz. Sounds like better battery life on the G5.

But that S7 camera is probably phenomenal.

Think $163 for an international (but compatible with my at&t) G5 is a good deal?

u/eclectro · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

Ok OP, I said I'd get you a recommend. Take a look at the LG Stylo 4 that is close to your budget at $180 and a better deal than the V20. Cons with the Stylo is ram size.

Also the Moto Z2 play I like too from swappa.com. Cons, battery life average. But I would not call it subpar. Really it might be the best pick for around $180.

You just are not going to find everything at this price level imho but we do look hard for it!

u/rtechie1 · 2 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

> Size Preference: Similar to an S3,

> MUST have a removable battery

In 2017, only LG phones have removable batteries, you're looking at an LG G5 or a used LG V10. Both are a lot larger than your S3.

If you want something that's the same size as the S3, look at the Sony Xperia X Compact.

T-Mobile is also offering $325 in credits on the Google Pixel, if you already have the Unlimited plan it's a great deal.

u/zacharee1 · 2 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

How about the Xperia XA? Although it has a big screen on paper, it's actually very pocketable due to it's narrower form factor than most other phones. It's $300CAD but unfortunately is not available on Fido.

BUT, blu has had privacy issues before. And there was one time when an updated bricked all of the phones of one specific model. (like serously ALL of them)

There is also the Moto G and E phones.

Moto G5 Plus

Moto E4

You need amazon prime to order them but you can subscribe and unsubscribe immediately after ordering so you don't get charged for it.

Edit: you can also get the Moto G5 Plus from motorola's site and also the Moto E

Girlfriend has this phone. it's amazing. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wileyfox-Swift-Dual-SIM-Free-Smartphone/dp/B014UUQUAO

I've ordered the Storm version, which is slightly larger, with better stats too.

Also, Two sims, That means that there are twice the network response packets... Your battery will die sooner simply due to the extra sim.

Thanks I will take a look at that. I also found it on amazon for $180 but Amazon-ified https://www.amazon.com/LG-Stylo-Unlocked-T-Mobile-Exclusive/dp/B07D3QKRW1/

You can still find a OnePlus 3T from other retailers. For example Amazon has one here. I'd act fast though if I were you.

Checked out Wileyfox's offerings?

You can get the Nexus 5X for $200 + $20 for the first month of service through Project Fi. If you think 16gb isn't enough, the 32gb version is available for $250 + $20 for one month of Project Fi service. You can also get the 32gb version from Amazon today for $269 if you're a prime subscriber.

The Nextbit Robin with 32gb storage is also a Prime Day deal today for $240.

if you can somehow get to $100, consider these:

https://www.amazon.com/BLU-Studio-X8-HD-Smartphone/dp/B01EYT1URO

else if you just cant order it online and have to walk somewhere to get one, just get a prepaid $40 moto e4 from walmart or the cheapest one they have.

$599 CDN.

And it's not even anywhere on Amazon.com or Amazon.ca. Is there any other reputable sites to buy phones off?

edit: The OnePlus 3 is $463.49 USD ($626.36 CDN) here. Maybe that's the one you meant? Closer to what you said if you meant USD.

  • Please note one of the reviewers biggest problems with the phone was no Jellybean but the phone has since been updated to jellybean so that's one major gripe out of the way.

Blu Phones are rebranded Chinese phones and so I'm extremely hesitant to recommend them.

Sorry I didn't answer your question but I don't want to recommend a phone I myself wouldn't use.
