I made this list for /r/NintendoSwitchDeals since someone asked about games. Figured I'd share here. Most of the games I've played, I've indicated where I haven't. Bolded prices indicate lowest price on CCC according to the plug-in.

  • 7 Wonders | $28.99 | 3-7 players | ~30-45 Minutes | 7.8 on BGG - This is a fantastic game to introduce people to "tableau building" and "card drafting." If you're not familiar, a tableau is the cards in front of you that are part of your "engine" going forward, usually you will add cards to it that add synergy to your strategy. Card drafting is when players have a hand of cards, choose one, and then pass to the person next to them. This game can fit up to 7 and it doesn't really bog the game down. I'm not in love with this game, but at this price I think it's a very fair offering for a game that once taught and played once, flows really nicely and makes for a great game to drink and talk while playing rather than being buried in thought about what to do.

  • 7 Wonders: Duel | $17.81 | 2 Players | 20-30 Minutes | 8.1 on BGG - This is a 2 player adaptation of 7 Wonders and it's quite a great version. Instead of card drafting by passing hands, there is a "market" that opens up further as more cards are chosen in which players take turns choosing from. It offers an intense 2 player back and forth of "chicken" in a way that flows nicely and culminates in a satisfying, even if sometimes mean, ending. Often credited as one of the best 2 player games out there, especially with expansions.

    * Agricola | $32.89 | 1-4 Players | 30-150 Minutes | 8.0 on BGG - I have never played this but you can find lots of excellent discussion about this on BGG and /r/boardgames. Ultimately it's a beefier board game about managing your farm to take care of your family. Sounds thrilling right? Well apparently it really is. It's currently rated the 25th bestboard game of all-time, and is often mentioned among some of the great games out there. This is an excellent price for this game new, so if there's any interest, go watch a review of two. Deal is done.

  • Carcassonne | $19.99 | 2-4 Players | ~30 Minutes | 7.4 on BGG - This is an excellent tile laying game for gamers and non-gamers alike. It's simple to teach, takes almost no time to set-up, and can easily be expanded to fit 5 players. If you end up loving this, there are many expansions for it to add depth, or silliness, whichever you prefer. This has become a staple in my circle of friends who don't really play board games because it's so approachable.

  • Isle of Skye | $24.35 | 2-5 Players | 30-50 Minutes | 7.5 on BGG - I've never played this, but it's been on my list for a while as a tile laying game with more complexity than Carcassonne. I don't know much about it, but this is a great price and those with Irish heritage might love the theme. Edit: Well this is embarrassing, Isle of Skye is in Scotland, sorry for that.

    * Pandemic: Fall of Rome | $27.99 | 1-5 Players | 30-60 Minutes | 7.8 on BGG - This is a variation of the much beloved game Pandemic. In this variation, you and up to 4 other players are taking control of Roman armies to defend against the oncoming tribes attempting to take over a weakened Rome. You will use your unique powers and randomly drawn cards to work together with the other players in this cooperative game. If you've played base Pandemic you will know what to expect, but this version has some cool thematic changes that have many reviewers calling it the second best iteration of the Pandemic series. Dead deal.

  • Patchwork | $17.84 | 2 Players | ~20 Minutes | 7.7 on BGG - This is an excellent 2 player game using spacial skills to build out your quilt in a sort of "Tetris" way. You need to manage buttons (currency) and time to efficiently build your quilt with as little empty spots as possible. It's a darling of the community and designed by the great Uwe Rosenberg. People meme about it because it's often recommended, but there's a reason why it is.

  • Photosynthesis | $21.11 | 2-4 Players | 30-60 Minutes | 7.2 on BGG - I've never played this, but it's quite a nice looking game on the table. It's about growing trees while using a limited amount of sunlight - or that's how it's been described to me anyway. I've heard that this game can get pretty cutthroat, especially at higher player counts, because of how limited the board space gets.

  • The Castles of Burgundy | $19.20 | 2-4 Players | 45-90 Minutes | 8.1 on BGG - One of the finest board games I've ever played in spite of the ugly art and theme of it. Visually, I find nothing about this appealing, but the gameplay is so fantastic that I fell in love with it immediately. You have 25 turns in which you are using two dice each turn which are used to make decisions on how to build out your board to gain victory points. The actions are mostly easy to understand, and you're never screwed over by a bad roll because bad rolls can be mitigated via worker resources. There is a good amount of strategic depth to it, minor "meanness" in "screwing over" opponents, and I mostly feel happy with every round - it's a rare game of satisfaction each turn. My only complaint is that the yellow tiles are all unique which turns into a lot of, "What does that one do?" which is mitigated with player aides you can find on BGG. Warning, new print coming out this year that may or may not make the art look better, but the new print will have all expansions. With that said, for $19.20 this is a no-brainer if you want something more complex than something like Catan.

  • The Quest for El Dorado | $19.99 | 2-4 Players | ~45 Minutes| 7.6 on BGG - This is a great deck-building racing game to get to El Dorado first. It's simple to learn and honestly my only complaint is that the game takes up a lot of space. The map is completely variable and there are some official variants in the book, as well as many others on BGG on the files section. If you enjoy the concept of building a deck to race through the treacherous lands to get to El Dorado, this is a great game. Warning, there is a new edition coming out with new artwork, so you may want to hold off.

I've got some ideas. What exactly do you need a laminator for? And are you in a decent sized city?

The Pixma Pro-100 handles cardstock perfectly. It's not going to be the most amazing print quality on most cardstocks. You need special inkjet paper which tends to be expensive. But I find it is more than adequate for my purposes using regular cardstock. I got mine on sale + a big mail in rebate that came with a Visa cash card. Overall I paid about $130 for it which is pretty good imo. I print on both sides of some real thick cardstock and then just cut them out with the paper cutter I'm going to link below. The other good thing about the printer is it handles larger paper sizes. I have 13x19 inkjet paper that it takes and the prints come out incredibly good. And that's a pretty decent size for printing the stuff I'm going to attach to chipboard.

(If you go the Pixma route, I suggest looking at some bulk inks. It has reduced my costs significantly)

I use this for a paper cutter. Works fine. You might do well to find a way to shine a light from underneath the swing arm to line up cuts but it's plenty good enough without it.

I use this corner rounder. I've done thousands of cards with it. Still good. I think if I had to buy it again though I'd look for something that was more like a traditional hole punch in using your whole hand. The one I linked gets your fingers sore after a while.

The reason I asked about where you live is because if you live in a good sized city, you may have access to fab labs. My public library has one with a laser cutter. It makes making tokens a breeze. And because it's at the library for me, it's freeeeeeee. Print on some label paper. Slap the fronts and backs onto a sheet of chipboard. Stick it in the laser cutter and voila, perfect tokens. They'll come out slightly singed but overall they're great.

How much are you going to print and play?

If it's not a lot, I would say just skip the printer. It's $130 at its cheapest and that's not even counting the cost of replacing the ink. If you're only going to print a few games and they're not that intense, just go to a local printshop and use their high quality business laser printers. They print super sharp into label paper and card stocks. Print the fronts on one, the backs on the other, stick em together, cut it out with the paper cutter. It's a bit of work but the finished product looks great.

I agree with other posters who think your shortlist is less than fantastic. It's really high on randomness, and your co-op picks have a lot of potential for unpleasant dynamics to occur. That's not to be unexpected: you're new to this as well!

Tabletop has a tendency to pick old games instead of the current best version of similar mechanics, this tends to lead to them recommending old stuff that's being replaced by gamers paying attention to more sources.

Here are games that are all deeper, more replayable, faster to explain, more logical and intuitive, as well as in line with your picks, while still handling your very wide number of players well:

Viticulture - theme is winemaking and is incredibly intuitive. Has an expansion that's significantly more complex when the group "advances" to that level. Reasonable playtime. Lowish luck. Buy Here: http://www.miniaturemarket.com/stm105.html?gclid=CP6ph63t29ACFY6EswodLf4GtA Watch a play through here

Mythos Tales - Theme is investigation, in Arkham. Similar world as Eldritch horror, but better independence on the co-op aspect, and more interesting gameplay, that is also easier for new folks to understand. You are picturing where to go to find more stuff, not doing complex yet unfulfilling rpg-alike battles. It's about actually filling stuff out, not getting abstract clue tokens. Buy Here: https://www.amazon.com/8th-Summit-Mythos-Tales/dp/B01L7X76IM You can't watch it played without ruining one of the cases, but you can watch an extremely similar game played here. There are a good number of cases, but a finite number.

Formula D - An easy to understand racing game, Formula D is fun, has lots of expansions if you choose to go that way, is less confrontational than an out and out war game while definitely having winners and confrontation, and is a blast to play. Buy it here: https://www.amazon.com/Asmodee-FDUSASM-Formula-D/dp/2914849648 or Watch it played

Even better games that were more specific could be recommended if you were going for narrower player counts, but these all can be explained in minutes, have depth and replayablity, and have good social dynamics.

Here's what I'd do if I had to rebuild a collection from scratch for $1k trying to have a wide variety of play styles:

7 Wonders $32.99
Agricola $45.79
Battlestar Galactica $39.97
Carcassonne $30.02
Carcassonne Inns & Cathedrals$15.71
Dixit $22.65
Dominion Big Box $69.18 Prosperity is one of the best expansions; Alchemy is not, but you're pretty much getting it for free in this set.
Eclipse $61.49 It wouldn't be a board game library without a 4X game, and I think Eclipse is the best currently.
Eldritch Horror $40.47 - I love Arkham Horror, but Eldritch streamlines a lot of the fiddly rules of the original.
Formula D [$41.96] (http://www.amazon.com/Asmodee-FDUSASM-Formula-D/dp/2914849648/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1395757676&sr=1-1&keywords=formula+d)
Gloom $17.98
Guillotine $13.52
King of Tokyo $30.19
Love Letter $9.34
Memoir 44 $47.43
No Thanks! $9.98
Pandemic $31.65
Power Grid $32.27
Puerto Rico [$31.20] (http://www.amazon.com/Rio-Grande-Games-195RGG-Puerto/dp/B00008URUT/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1395756360&sr=8-1&keywords=puerto+rico)
Race for the Galaxy $24.11
Resistance, The $17.99
Roborally $37.49
Settlers of Catan $37.99
Telestrations $19.99 Awesome and funny party game. My friends and I eventually tire of Apples to Apples or Cards Against Humanity, but seldom do so with this.
Ticket to Ride $37.24
Ticket to Ride 1910 Expansion $18.21
Tsuro $24.22
Twilight Struggle $49.98
Village $35.47
Wits & Wagers $19.99

That comes up to $946.47; room for a couple more expansions or another game.

There are a lot of versions of Werewolf, but one of those versions is One Night Ultimate Werewolf.

I guess I'm only a fan of certain Euros (and I REALLY like those, like Le Havre), and I just wasn't a big fan of TM. BUT I have still only played it with 2 players, which is not supposed to be a good idea.

Anyway, I hope you like the games you get!

u/SoupOfTomato · 1 pointr/boardgames

The other guy said a lot of what needed to be. You post a lot in the normal /r/games subreddit - so this description might be akin to telling /r/games that a generic and clunky platformer (like many licensed games) is an amazing idea. Video games have deeper strategy, storytelling ability, or simply opportunity for fun than that. Board games have deeper strategy, storytelling ability, and opportunity for fun than things like Monopoly or Life.

There is, however, and entire GENRE of boardgames which involve the board being made. It's called Tile Laying. I suggest you check out Carcassone (Here's Wil Wheaton playing it). There's also Escape: The Curse of the Temple which involves a soundtrack, rolling dice merely as fast as you can, and working together, as well as your "build the board as you go" idea. Super-popular and most-viable-for-title-of-modern-classic game The Settlers of Catan which you have likely heard of also involves a modular board that is not the same every game. Here's an entire list on the Board Game Geek.

In fact, you'll probably find that most of the "modern" games being played by people will not have your traditional idea of a game board. Dominion is played entirely with cards and is like a self-contained game of Magic every single time. Cosmic Encounter simply gives you some cardboard planets to defend and then you're off in an interspecies race to take control of the galaxy. And so on.

As the other guy said, there's a lot of good ideas in your suggestion. The "build the board as you go" idea is so good it's one of the most dominant mechanics in modern gaming :) Action cards are also a pretty common mechanic. But, some of the least popular ideas in modern gaming: losing turns and player elimination (getting knocked out, last man standing), roll and move (roll a die, move to space, do what it says). Losing turns means you don't get to play and... well you are playing the game to play. Player elimination is the exact same. Roll and move is too screwy and random for most people - eliminating way too much skill.

"Victory Points" are the most common way to get around the player elimination. Your idea has an extremely solid base idea and could make a great, short game with adjustment to this mechanic IMO. If being near the end of the plank is undesirable, how about you get one Victory Point for every piece of the board you are away from the edge at the end of your turn? The person that "falls off" the edge gets 0 points but is not eliminated from future proceedings. The person that's doing the best will get a whopping 7 points for their turn, or something like that. Play until no more board pieces are left and then tally them up!

As for the roll and move, perhaps you have a certain amount of movement that you automatically do each turn. For example, you automatically move 3 spaces down the board each turn. However, various ways of placing the board (perhaps placing some bits together combos), or certain action cards, can reduce this. You still don't move, but you don't move by the effect of gameplay, instead of "losing a turn".

My daughter, 6, and I do the same thing before bed!

I would recommend the classic A-maze-ing Labyrinth game. Brilliant and fun for that age.

Also great to play with other adults and a few drinks! : )

Title of Request: Great 2-4 player game for my wife's birthday

Number of Players: 2+

Complexity of Game: On the heavy side

Competitive or Cooperative: Either, though we don't currently own Coop games, so that'd be fun to try

Budget: $40-60

Games I Own/Like: We like Playing Cards, Catan, and Ticket to Ride

Dislike: We play cards, so I'm not interested in a game that is a branded version of something easily played with a standard deck of cards (e.g. - Spades)

I'd really like to find a new game that'd be good for a date night. Since we have 2 strategy-ish games that involve collecting resources and spending them, I'm thinking something else might be good but I'm not sure what else there is. I looked at https://boardgamegeek.com and it seems most of the top games are resource/strategy related. She's into sci-fi, so that might be fun.

Based on my research, these look interesting but I'm not sure about the replayability:

u/wakasm · 3 pointsr/boardgames

Android Netrunner is a Living Card Game. It's packaged more like a board game.

The core set comes in a big box... but once you learn how to play it, you can easily put 1 or 2 decks in deck boxes and and the extra bits in another one, and leave everything you won't use inside the box.

  • This game right now is very popular
  • Each side plays differently, so you have two things to master learning
  • Core set comes with 7 decks basically to get you started (3 for one side, 4 for the other)
  • You CAN deck build by pulling cards from one deck to the other to a point, which can keep the game very fresh
  • There are expansions should you enjoy it enough to explore more
u/m00dawg · 2 pointsr/boardgames

I found a shallow one off of Amazon. Also found the black plastic tray I've heard mentioned, but the shipping on that thing is non-trivial to make it worthwhile. Looks just about perfect for the ship upgrades though.

I'm thinking one of those plastic boxes might be good enough for now. Surely it'd be better than throwing a bunch of these tiles in plastic bags.

u/SonorousSonambulist · 1 pointr/boardgames

Crazy escalation to jump from Catan to Terraforming Mars.

Carcassonne (picture here) is a great game. Easy setup, easy tear down, and consistently fun. I highly recommend the Z-Man edition of the game the other commenter mentioned. Carcassonne has expansions that you can add after you’d played the game for a while. But the vanilla version is great at two players.

u/Shmandy · 2 pointsr/boardgames

Pick up the red and purple editions of Roll for It! It's a nicely portable dice game that is accessible for all ages and gaming-experience levels. They each play 4 players, there are rules for combining them for 8-player games. Alternatively, the Deluxe Edition has everything you need for 8 players.

I also highly recommend One Night: Ultimate Werewolf, which can play up to 10 players. You can play the whole game in 5 minutes and there is a companion app that guides you through the whole thing. High replay value, as well.

We Didn't Playtest This is a silly party-style game that goes very quickly. Players get knocked out based on the rules of the cards, and many of the rules stack throughout the game. Can play any number of players.

u/latetothetable · 3 pointsr/boardgames

Before I start can you clarify which version of Werewolf that you bought? It sounds like you possibly bought Ultimate Werewolf and One Night Ultimate Werewolf: Daybreak which (as confusing as it is) are two completely separate games. If so you may want to change that purchase to One Night Ultimate Werewolf and One Night Ultimate Werewolf: Daybreak because those are compatible with each other.

But onto answering your question, I'd also suggest:

  • Some Social Deduction Games - Before you pull out Werewolf (unless if these people are gamers and willing to have a few awkward rounds), I'd suggest A Fake Artist Goes To New York and Spyfall would be even better if you want to play a game while driving (literally the driver can even participate).
  • Some 2 player games - Onitama has been a consistent hit with my non-gamer friends because it feels like chess but so much quicker. I'd also suggest Lost Cities because it's a nice little card game that has a ton of replayability and it's super easy to teach.
  • I'd also suggest Hanabi because it doesn't seem like you have any co-op games in there. Hanabi has basically become the co-op game I pull out for people that hate co-op games. It's also probably one of my favorite card games.
u/AmuseDeath · 2 pointsr/boardgames

25 pounds! You should be okay.

And as far as needing the data packs go, you do not need them. I play with a friend who is pretty skilled and there is a TON of game here. In this box alone, there are 3 Runners and 4 Corporations, meaning 12 matchups alone. Each matchup is very different and interesting as well. There are also 2 different sides to play in this game. You can either play as the aggressive and nimble runner or the slow and brooding corporation.

It is a very intense game and one of my favorites.

u/auronvi · 1 pointr/boardgames

Without sleeving? Not much you can do there really except don't allow drinks on a table. 2000 cards using decent penny sleeves will not cost that much. I bought a box of 1000 sleeves for 10 bucks so 20 bucks can sleeve that whole game for you.

https://www.amazon.com/Sleeves-Sleeve-Baseball-Sports-Packaging/dp/B000Y4HI7A/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1486376763&sr=8-9&keywords=card+sleeves

Two of these will sleeve 2000 cards. 3 will probably cover your needs. Now... actually spending the time to sleeve them? Yeah, it will suck and take time but 30 dollars and a few hours sleeving to protect your investment I think is well worth it.

I will say... these sleeves are not the best quality and don't feel good like dime sleeves do... but you get what you pay for. It would cost you $200 to sleeve using Dragon Shield or the like. Myself? Where I am at with sleeving games I buy Dragon Shield for everything. To me, it's worth it. Sure... I spent more on sleeves than the cards cost for Star Realms by my set is slick, easy to shuffle and play and looks great. I have also sleeved all of EPIC and have sleeves for all of my Mage Wars books (10+ of 60+ cards each). So I buy a ton of sleeves.

So for you on a budget? Penny sleeves.

I am really looking forward to Dead of Winter, haven't played it yet, but people say the Crossroads mechanic is what makes the game great.

However, my group does enjoy Zombicide. Thought I'd throw it out there, since Amazon has it going pretty cheap today. Some might say it is more Left4Dead than The Walking Dead, which I don't deny, but I just think of the episodes right after the farm where they are trying to survive the winter by going door-to-door, looking for supplies, and it fits that narrative :)

u/SgtKashim · 1 pointr/boardgames

A couple of additional suggestions - since I don't really like Castles of Burgundy, and I haven't played 7 Wonders Duel.

Just because it's so small, cheap, and still a great game, you should get Mint Works. Kickstarter campaign just finished, and you should still be able to get a copy here. Quick, plays up to 4, and has real strategy. A similar idea is Eight Minute Empires Legends - a small, quick game with real strategy.

Bigger, deeper games - I'm a big fan of Isle of Skye. It's a bit Carcasonne-y, in that you're building an interlocking territory, but it adds a bidding mechanic for the tiles, plus different victory conditions every game.

Five Tribes has been good, but I don't know how it'd work with 2.

If you're looking for a two player game, especially if you're cutthroat people, get Patchwork. If a more abstract strategy game is OK, I've very much enjoyed Hive.

u/Poptech · 2 pointsr/boardgames

Unless this was your wife's idea you are likely to be disappointed with many of the games you play with her. Despite people's delusions women on average do not like conflict oriented (e.g. fighting, war) games and while co-op games sound like a solution they don't like being told what to do either (yes you will try to do this). I highly recommend playing games with friends in addition to your wife to get a well rounded view and to see if you really like them or not. If you do want to play with your wife I recommend the following games:

u/wkrick · 1 pointr/boardgames

Race For The Galaxy supports 2-4 players in the base game.

Race For The Galaxy: The Gathering Storm (Expansion #1) adds a 5th player and also includes rules for solitaire play.

Race For The Galaxy: Rebel Vs. Imperium (Expansion #2) adds a 6th player.

It's a card-based game. There's no board. It's very simple to learn, but the strategy is incredibly deep for a card game. Play time is around 30 minutes.

Each expansion adds some new play options on top of the base game rules but a LOT of people just use the new cards from the first two expansions and continue to play using the base game rules.

This is currently my all-time favorite game.

u/UnhelpfulProtagonist · 1 pointr/boardgames

Master's Gallery is a simple card game with no reading and big symbols. The challenge of the game comes from playing the people at the table much like poker. Easy to learn and a favorite with our game group.

X-wing and Armada are great games with nice big miniatures and table sized star maps. There is only a small amount of card reading. The problem with this game is that it is addictive and collectible. You may be setting him up for an expensive hobby. Also, it is two player and I'm not sure if you want group games.

Galaxy Trucker is a great game with no reading and not being able to hear other players muter curses at you when you take the laser they wanted can only help you focus. Very high speed with a neat ship building part. However, the ships you build suck and fail/fall to bits during the game. That upsets some people.

u/OutlierJoe · 2 pointsr/boardgames

But you are literally saying the exact same thing xTheOOBx was saying other than "I don't agree".

If the game is well stocked, it is significantly cheaper than local stores. If it isn't well stocked, it is only a little bit cheaper than your local stores. The only exception is MayFair games, where they have a cap on their retail discount.

And for what it is worth:

It looks like when I said "frequently between 30% and 40%, I was pretty damn close. It's okay to want to support the local game stores, as we all have said, they provide something more than just the game. I visit the same exact stores you do, and I know "not that much cheaper" is down right false. Buying games online is almost a buy 2-3 get 1 free - and that's not considering any significant sale.
u/REdEnt · 2 pointsr/boardgames

If you can find a local game store, I'd go and ask what their policy is on returns. You could just go with a gift card to the place, though I know that can be impersonal, but if they allow it on unopened games, I'd get him something small like Zombie Dice, Hive, Codenames, Forbidden Island, or Sushi Go (all between $5 and $20 generally). If he has the game he can return it for some dice, or something else he needs, but I think the thought of going out and researching what good games are out there is nice.

u/[deleted] · -7 pointsr/boardgames

wow so many aspies in here. i once played settlers with a guy who kept every card - resource cards, development cards etc - in an ultra-pro soft sleeve. the guy was a total nutcase and was very specific about how he wanted his board handled. dude you brought a game to a convention, get over yourself.

i personally have two copies of games for situations like that anyway. we have a party copy and a nicer copy. but no one in my circle of friends are anywhere neat autistic so no one is anxious about mixing beverages and games anyway. guess i'm just lucky

In 2013, US dollars were exchanged to canadian dollars almost 1 to 1 (0.94). Today, a canadian dollar is worth 70 cents. So Troyes went up from 35 dollars to 45?

It was also highly anticipated reprint in the middle of a boom of interest in boardgaming we are having right now, so the first wave was sold at a high price. Looking at a UK pricetracker you can see both how anticipated it was before the reprint and how the price right now is far from stable, being 35 pounds in february and 60 right now.
Android netrunner, if anything, seems to have gone down in prices for the UK at least, and the UK and american amazon usually track each other pretty well. Castles from Burgundy is stable for the last five years, Jamaica is falling.

It seems like it's either a canadian problem or maybe you were really good at picking prices when they were low back in 2013 and now you are comparing them to randomly chosen prices now?

u/ArstanNeckbeard · 2 pointsr/boardgames

If you're interested in getting your wife to try games, try something you can both play together cooperatively. I've had good luck with Forbidden Island which is an amazing game for its price. Basically, you're all (or both) running around an island that is gradually sinking into the sea, trying to recover the four legendary treasures and meet up back at the helicopter before the entire island sinks. Maybe move on to Forbidden Desert after a while, which is a little more complicated, or its even more complicated older brother, Pandemic.

u/Wrightboy · 4 pointsr/boardgames

I've really like the Quiver for travelling with a bunch of card games. Otherwise I've had good luck with the Iris photo box from craft stores, filled all of the carts with a game or two, handles more than just cards easily which is nice.

u/Sayoshinn · 2 pointsr/boardgames

How about Jaipur or Hive Pocket? Mr Jack Pocket is also wonderful. Star Realms is the best micro game of the year IMHO, and scales past 2P with multiple decks. Coup is also a lot of fun and quick. I personally do not like Cheaty Mages at all.

u/dkl415 · 1 pointr/boardgames

I use penny sleeves. I've played about a dozen games since Christmas, and the sleeves are holding up fine. And if they break, they're less than a penny.

http://www.amazon.com/Sleeves-Sleeve-Baseball-Sports-Packaging/dp/B000Y4HI7A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1421692674&sr=8-1&keywords=penny+sleeves

Something to consider with a card like Marvel: Legendary is that not all cards are being used all the time. You're only using one mastermind, and those cards are barely shuffled. You're only using 5 heroes out of dozens (with expansions). As a result, your sleeves will hold up a lot longer than, say, playing Magic where the same cards will be shuffled again and again and again.

u/bedlogic · 1 pointr/boardgames

If you're in the US and have an Amazon Prime account I think the best deal would be from seller Empire Depot on Amazon for $31.98 plus free Prime shipping.

EDIT: Or straight from Amazon for $32.27. The sellers seem to come and go.

u/eckswyezed · 10 pointsr/boardgames
  • Dead Last is a recent game with a traitor mechanic. On Amazon now for exactly 20 bucks. But it requires a minimum of 6 players.

  • Coup scales well from 2 to 6. It is a good game of hidden identities.

  • One Night Ultimate Werewolf / Vampire are good games that work from 3 - 10 players. Good amount of bluffing and hidden identities.

  • And then there's always the classic Resistance: Avalon.

Edit1: Few other suggestions: Bang: The Dice Game, Citadels, Mascarade

    Edit2: Formatting

The aMAZEing Labyrinth is a great game that I enjoyed when I was young, and still break out occasionally to play. Simple enough for kids to grasp, but complex enough for adults to enjoy as well. I believe it's just selling under the name "Labyrinth" now; you can find it on Amazon here.

Unless this is the "Magic Labyrinth" you are referring to?

u/buoyantChicken · 3 pointsr/boardgames

I know that the quiver comes pretty highly regarded. Bonus that it's designed to be portable.

I wouldn't do it myself. I feel like I would forget about all the games I put in it. Seems like it would be harder to sell people on playing a game without the box for people to see.

u/SaxSoulo · 2 pointsr/boardgames

Aside from the actual boards, you could probably organize almost everything into something like these. The 4-row box will fit on the Kallax shelf nicely. I do this for all of my games that are almost entirely cards. Bag the chits in there with the cards. You could easily fit 4-8 games in one of these boxes as long as it doesn't have any really large components. Write what games you're storing in there on the boxes. Then file all the boards alphabetically with some kind of tab divider.

u/RedundantPangolin · 1 pointr/boardgames

Here is an example of 1500 black matte sleeves. They come to about 3 cents/sleeve.
Here is an example of penny clear sleeves.
The nice thing about the black ones is that it hides the back of the card. There are times when that is very useful.
I also found an example of the smaller sleeves

There could be better bulk prices. These are fairly quick searches but we have been happy with the black matte at that amount & price range.

u/precordial_thump · 2 pointsr/boardgames

It depends on what size cards you need to sleeve and how particular you are over how tightly they fit.

I sleeved all my Legendary cards with these sleeves (1,000 for $8.25) and have been perfectly happy with them.

u/voxl · 2 pointsr/boardgames

Sure thing. If you want to be notified when it's back on Amazon and at a good price, a great tool for tracking that stuff is camelcamelcamel.com.

For two player - try Patchwork or 7 wonders Duel. Both are fairly light hearted games that can have a some strategy. Both are fairly easy to learn and both are available on amazon. You don't have to draw or write in both of these games :)

Edit: Both of these games are exclusively two player which means they are designed to be played that way.

u/kanemalakos · 4 pointsr/boardgames

Foamcore is generally what people use when making inserts for board games. It's easy to work with, glues together well, and looks pretty good, especially if you use a black color to hide any imperfections. You can check out a lot of different examples, tips and tricks over at r/foamcore.

Also, I would be remiss not to mention that Amazon.com has Zombicide new-in-box for $54 bucks. Totally amazing price; I paid $100 at GenCon. However, in case the painted figs still interest you, its worth mentioning that in addition to a whole six or seven painted figures, I also have a few character sheet printouts of some of the bonus heroes - El Cholo (Danny Trejo from Machete), Bruce Willis from Die Hard, and Sheldon from Big Bang Theory. I don't have their minis, unfortunately, as they were not available for sale when we bough the game, but I did print them on decent cardstock so they don't look too badly (though they are a bit lighter in color than the stock character sheets). ;)

If the game actually has some depth then it takes many MANY plays. To put it in perspective Manhattan Project took roughly 30+ plays before it got stale, and this is after playing the game practically every other day with 2 players and the occasional 4-5 player game. But playing something like Sheriff of Nottingham got stale after the 3rd game once we realized we were playing the game wrong and according to the rules you basically HAVE to lie half the time.

Also sleeves shouldn't be TOO expensive, I wouldn't be shocked if there are cheaper options than these

u/jawells630 · 1 pointr/boardgames

That is the same art as in the Catalan edition, the latest Spanish edition and any other new edition I've seen. Your last "English" Catan (is the same publisher in Britain as in the US?) may be a reedition, not really a new edition, based in the old original edition.

How does your US edition look like? Like this, maybe? http://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/14216/the-settlers-of-catan

That's the old edition. Newer editions are like the one you link. Even in English. http://www.amazon.com/MayFair-Games-MFG3061-Settlers-Catan/dp/B000W7JWUA

Edit: seen your update. Now I see what you mean. It seems MayFair games last edition does not follow standards. They have tiles from last standard edition, but pieces from previous ones. Maybe they had too many wooden pieces in stock?

Occasionally they have actual deals. Also for smaller orders it can make senses when you factor in shipping costs and delivery times.

For example you could get Risk Legacy or Galaxy Trucker right now for less than most other retailers or Sushi Go for a couple bucks more than Greatboardgames but free two day shipping w/ Prime.

u/scififan444 · 5 pointsr/boardgames

I would suggest Tsuro since the only pieces are the tiles and the little wooden guys, and it's a fun, straightforward game.

There's also Chinese Checkers which is similar to the one you described, where you move the marbles around.

Also, there's Labyrinth, which has cards, but you only use them for reference and mostly just move the tiles.

Finally, when I was little, my grandpa made me a card stand like this to hold cards, that might work for your grandpa too.

I sleeve all of the cards for card and board games. They start to show wear very quickly and my grandfather always bends the cards whenever he puts them down in Ascension.

I use very basic cheap penny sleeves to protect the cards. They're very slippy and can be irritating to shuffle but with so many cards and so many different games they do the job effectively.

I use a similar method.

I layout my cards in Gimp and print them on Polaroid photo paper that I get at the Dollar Tree. 8 sheets for a buck = 72 cards.

I cut them on with a Fiskar rotary cutter and usually sleeve them with a cut down 3x5 card as backing for a little extra stiffness in UltraPro sleeves. But, if it's something that I want to keep...

I use a Swingline laminator with Apache pouches and corner punch them with the Kadomaru Pro.
