This is a scary situation. I would recommend involving law enforcement to the extent that you can, if you can do any more than you already have.

Besides that, first priority is perimeter hardening. Cameras may provide some deterrent but won’t protect you if someone comes for you. I know it’s a rental but maybe you could convince the landlord that these are upgrades done at your own expense. Or just don’t tell. Reinforced door jamb

Door Armor MAX - Complete Door Reinforcement Set For Jamb, Frame, Strike Plate - DIY Home Door Security - Aged Bronze https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E9ZGWH2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_9J2FDbK66084S

Upgrade to steel door or similar if your door is not strong.

Add security film to the windows

BDF S4MC Window Film Security and Safety Clear 4 Mil (24in X 13ft) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FRLI2PC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_192FDbNYNR641

Next, I would also add a security system with door/window sensors that sets off a siren when triggered. There are many, Ring is a popular DIY currently

Ring Alarm 5 Piece Kit - Home Security System with optional 24/7 Professional Monitoring - No long-term contracts - Works with Alexa https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D7Q6CHB/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_rg3FDbYQSMX46

I would recommend paying for professional monitoring at least for a couple months so that it calls law enforcement for you

Next sleep with a pepper spray of your choice beside your bed. I like this one

SABRE Red Pepper Gel - Police Strength - Family, Home & Property Defense Gel with Wall Mount Bracket https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002368VJ6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Rp3FDbPZRWD5X

AFTER you have done these things, yes add a camera or two. Might provide some deterrent, might help you go after them if they do property damage. Wyze cams are cheap and decent. Will need an outdoor housing if installing outdoors.

Wyze Cam 1080p HD Indoor Wireless Smart Home Camera with Night Vision, 2-Way Audio, Person Detection, Works with Alexa & the Google Assistant https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076H3SRXG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_3l3FDb2MGD3RM

Good luck, be safe

Hey there /r/homesecurity! I'm C5tWm77t5hMJC7m78845, though you can call me C5tWm77t5h for short.

Figured it's time to beef up my home security, partially because all of this is interesting to me and 'why not' and also because I've got expensive hobbies and stuff in my house that I'd like to protect.

I've got a pretty small house, <700 sq/ft in the corner of downtown that isn't the best area of town but... hey, I live in a small town... not much crime here to begin with. But earlier this year I did have my car vandalized (Well, every car on the street got a nice blue stripe of spray paint as someone drove down the road with a passenger spraying cars...) and aside from a neighbor having a can of gas stolen out of the back of his truck... pretty tame area even if it is the 'bad side' of town.

So, security cameras. What are your thoughts on this: http://www.amazon.com/Zmodo-PKD-DK4216-500GB-Internet-Accessible-4-Channel/dp/B005FM8UL4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1416265580&sr=8-1 ?

I believe this is more than enough for me. What my plans are is simply pointing one east/west out front, which will cover the sidewalk/gate/mailbox/my car on the street. One under my porch overhang facing my front door where I enter/leave and where USPS/UPS/FedEx leaves me packages and one facing the back yard where I very rarely but sometimes park my car.

I live next door to relatives who has cameras on their house, and theirs would hit any blind spots that mine may miss. The two houses combined would provide good security coverage.

What are your thoughts on that camera system? Adequate? I'm not particularly requiring anything fancy since I work from home and AM home 90% of the time. The remote viewing is nice but would rarely be used.

Thanks!

Assuming a solid core door. If a hollow core door, first replace with a good metal exterior solid core door and then see below.

  1. Remove the screws which hold your hinges into the frame. They are most likely 1 1/4" long. Replace them with 3" deck screws. Also replace the screws that hold the hinges to the door with 2 1/2" deck screws.

  2. install a deadbolt if you don't already have one. Best is if it's offset from the lock set by 12". If you have the tools and skills install another deadbolt. If the first is 12" above the lock put the second one 12" below. Use GOOD locks! There is a difference.

  3. Install a deadbolt and lock reinforcent plates according to the directions. Here's an example : https://www.amazon.com/Reinforcement-Deadbolt-Reinforcer-Security-Strengthen/dp/B005KP0YGU/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=5JNSTA45S9KH&keywords=deadbolt+reinforcement+plate&qid=1572125361&sprefix=deadbolt+re%2Caps%2C240&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzTDE2VFdKMFhQTjdSJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMzM3MDY1QUhNTEs0OEs5TVdZJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA3Mzc0NjAxOUZCUDgyTkdaQzFTJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

  4. Same for the door lock: https://www.amazon.com/Prime-Line-Products-9551-Reinforcer-Stainless/dp/B000OFTIL8/ref=pd_sim_b2b_7?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B000OFTIL8&pd_rd_r=d5b3c5aa-c731-4c87-9b90-b887a522107f&pd_rd_w=bsuv6&pd_rd_wg=gwiAR&pf_rd_p=a07701e4-f565-442a-b97f-93ab23cbb7ef&pf_rd_r=64PRKZYD4KQJF99M3NNS&psc=1&refRID=64PRKZYD4KQJF99M3NNS

  5. as the other poster alluded to the key is to make your house entry less attractive than others. Cameras and lights do wonders. Remove anything that can mask an intruders actions such as shrubs. Also remove items that can be thrown through windows.

If you want to go old school just get a CCTV camera, something like this https://www.amazon.com/Analog-Camera-Security-2-8mm-12mm-Monitoring/dp/B07F2J2X6Y/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=cctv+camera&qid=1564088074&s=gateway&sr=8-8 (not an endorsement of this product just an example) and a monitor something like this https://www.amazon.com/Security-Audio-Video-Computer-Surveillance/dp/B00COT8K70/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=cctv+monitor&qid=1564088125&s=gateway&sr=8-3

Finally a BNC cable like this: https://www.amazon.com/Alrolink-Camera-Security-Surveillance-System/dp/B07S6F3T3H/ref=sr_1_11?keywords=bnc+cable&qid=1564088185&s=gateway&sr=8-11 maybe not as long tho will let you send power and video while running only one cable.

And he would need a power supply. The camera requires 12VDC 1A and that shouldn't be hard to find, with some cable lengths you have to step up the voltage a bit to get the 12V to the camera (longer cables can drop the voltage level).

Ideally, I would install a steel security door outside the glass door but it depends on budget.

That's a lot of glass, you can try security film to slow down any intruders but doubt it'll hold them long.

Replace the single cylinder deadbolt with a double cylinder deadbolt, something like this

It's noname Chinese gear, so as long as you're not expecting much. I'd go with a better switch though, like this one: https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-8-Port-Gigabit-Ethernet-Desktop/dp/B00BP0SSAS/

Also, cat 6. Nobody uses 5e anymore.

This is the voltage detector pen that I was telling you about, /u/achstuff:

Klein Tools NCVT-2 Dual Range Tester, Non Contact Tester for Standard and Low Voltage with 3-m Drop Protection

These are the RJ-45 Ethernet jacks that I use:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079K7XMGQ/

This is the crimper that I use (the wires pass through the jacks and then this cuts them)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00939KFOU/

And this is the tester that I use:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DQH4XPW/

I have some other tools which I can list, but this the base set that you'd want to use to get rolling. The nice part about these particular jacks is that their bin's outside label has the diagram for the T568B standard (which you'll want to use (assuming you're crimping both sides of the cable) unless you're trying to match T568A)

Get yourself some window security film. My buddy who used to be a thief said it is the best cheapest most obvious thing that people never think of.

so it looks like the ADT Command is fully wireless?

wonder if ademco wireless smokes would be compatible?

As Ralph_Goodman said, security against destructive attacks is limited by the 3/8 shackle size. This one meets your size requirements, and the description says it has a spinner over the core. Pick wise I have no idea, but Stanley has a fair reputation, and it says it has "anti pick pins" (check out BosinanBill or LockPickingLawyer on Youtube and you'll find out what good those pins are).

If you don't want to replace the switch you can get a 8 port passive POE injector. They start at $18 without the power brick.

http://www.amazon.com/WS-POE-8-48v60w-Passive-Ethernet-Injector-Cameras/dp/B0086SQDMM/

Foscam IP cams can do this. I have this one and it does FTP and email.

I've had it for just over 4 years and have had no problems with it. I'm sure there are newer versions with better resolution and features.

u/madrogp · 1 pointr/homesecurity

Im using this

https://www.amazon.com/D-Link-Camera-Remote-Viewing-DCS-932L/dp/B004P8K24W/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1484603192&sr=8-2&keywords=linksys+camera

Can remote to it, very cheap. I have mine set up to email me clips so no need for remote storage. It can do eathernet or wireless

IF you have a camera that allows you to disable the Infrared Illuminators, then you can put a separate IR illuminator also aimed out the window.

I have a similar setup right now, this is the illuminator I used :

I suppose you could use CAT-5 for these cameras, but you would then need to use a balun connection on both ends to convert it over to BNC.

The box you found is most likely the main panel, and the antennas are for the wireless devices out in the field, as for as a cell goes, whenever I have had to I tract with them we added the cell (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00CM89YEQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1505184396&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=gsmx4g&dpPl=1&dpID=31OHMWr-IeL&ref=plSrch) and a dialer capture (https://www.alarmsystemstore.com/products/honeywell-dcid-ext-dialer-capture-module) provided the panel is currently programmed to communicate via contact ID, as for as monitoring with this equipment you would need to find a alarm net dealer that can monitor it (most company can)
