I'll start by saying I think that savage looks pretty awesome. However:

Despite a lot of hate on the AAC-SD I have one and I love it. Out of the box it shot sub-MOA with factory load XM118s and PPU 168s. The factory Xmark Pro gets unnecessary hate for no reason. It has amazing adjustment and feel out of the box compared to a lot of the hair triggers people try to put on their rifles. You really don't need another trigger but you can if you want to waste the money. Remington will do the recall on the rifle for free for the "totally fires itself if you run it down to the lowest setting and bump it like a dumbass" bullshit that is not even true of any R700 ever built, but you can send it in and they will do it for you. I sent both of mine in just because it made it easier to ship them to my new house when I moved. Their customer support is pretty awesome. As is Smith and Wesson's and Winchesters in my experience.

The rifle is stock for me at the moment and I am using a Caldwell bi-pod with a Bushnell elite scope. The scope isn't the end all be all but it is the best thing I've ever shot through as a civilian. I was in the same boat as you money wise. I do notice the complaint about the free float being negated with a bi-pod sometimes since the Hogue stock is basically rubber but if you fire each round with the exact same fundamentals down it will shoot sub-moa still. I'm using a 20MOA down scope mount from Nightforce and I love it. The rifle is a bit heavy and I do want to swap out the stock eventually for a M24 or M40 variant but it can easily be handled and used to shoot and move if you choose to practice like that. I've had it out to 500 yards so far and at that range it still shot a 16oz water bottle off the wall at our tactical range from our elevated tower. I'll see if I have any pictures of it somewhere and I'll post it, or just take it out later and take a picture of it.

I got the rifle itself from Buds Gun shop Police discount side of the house for $600 shipped to my FFL and most everything else from Amazon since there wasn't a good shop where I lived at the time.

Shooting mat and rear bad like the other guy suggested. My first bag was a sock filled with unpoped popcorn and tied off... I still use that bag fairly often. this is the mat/bag that I have and I love it.

One thing that I would highly recommend is a scope lover. If you don't have one now then you might not notice how nice it is to have available to you. It van make a very big difference. I have a weaver (I think) anti cant device (scope level) and it was about $30 but I think it's well worth it. If I ever get another level it will probably be a solid piece instead of the hinged one I have now.

Hope this is helpful!

First layer of protection: ear plugs. I use these.

Second layer of protection: electronic ear muffs, either the Howard Leight Impact Sports or the 3M Peltor Sport Tactical. Both work fine and choice is determined by which fit your head better. I tried the Impact Sports and they wouldn't seal right around my ears so I got the Peltors instead and they're perfect.

Don't forget eye protection too...

The fundamental text on the subject would be McCoy's Modern Exterior Ballistics. That isn't cheap, so you could check out the original paper that laid the basis for the common point mass model used in most ballistic solvers. This Master's thesis also has a great deal of useful information. Depending on whether or not you have access to various journals, there are some interesting papers on various approaches to piece-wise linearization of the equations, which saves the trouble of needing an RK4 or similar method for the solution of PDEs. [Kalil, 2015](http://ascelibrary.org/doi/abs/10.1061/ASCE AS.1943-5525.0000381) and Hainz, 2005 are worth a look.

Depending on what you are loading (and how tight you want the tolerances to be) analog scales work great for setting up your powder measure. I use the Hornady Auto Charge and it works great for half the price of the RBCS Chargemaster.

I have a Barska 20-60x scope that is $75 on amazon. It's not exactly high quality, but it works pretty well for the price. I'm not sure how well it'll work at 300 yards, I've only used it at the 100 yard range. Also FYI, if you wear glasses, you'll need to take them off to look through this scope.

So far the best way I've found without having my target break or drop is using the following:

  • 2"x4" x (however wide you want the stand)

  • These stand brackets

  • 3/4" black pipe (or galvanized, black just stands out better in my opinion), get whatever length you want the height of your target at, I went with 6' and happy so far.

  • 1/2" bolts to attach to both the 2"x4"

  • 1/2" chain to attach from the 2"x4" to the targets.

  • I had tried this set here and the 1/4" chain did not hold up after 20+ shots of .308.

  • These also work pretty well, but if you're shooting larger caliber rifles or handgun and hit them, they will tear a bit. I've hit them with .22lr and 9mm and they pass right through, but the .45acp and .30-30 left some nasty rips in them.

  • for my silhouette target, I use this when shooting 200 yards, it's on a 2"x4" with a box frame at the bottom, I also thrown a small 25lbs bag of sand on the base to be sure, it's worked amazingly well so far.

Both eyes.

My uncle was a firearms instructor and shot competitively. He taught me how to shoot after my father passed away. One day he noticed me squinting my left eye and said my father would have slapped me on the back of the head if he saw me doing that.

Shooting with one eye closed causes fatigue if you do it for very long. It will also cause you to lose visual acuity after a few seconds vs shooting with both eyes open. A.A. Yur'yev wrote a really good book with all sorts of awesome information like this in it. I like to reread it every few years or so as it seems I always pick up something new.

I realize that is a valid question but I felt stupid saying it out loud. Basically it is a Nightforce 1 piece mount. I had this thought as I was mounting it and as it turns out the screw holes only line up one direction. I feel like from what I was seeing that the thing is mounted backwards but it literally does not fit the other way, the screws just don't line up. I'll take it off and give it a whirl though one last time and see what happens. I mean this would be a super simple answer that I actually struggled with for a while. To be 100% honest, looking at it my mind tells me that it is on backwards but like I said the screw holes just don't line up to make that possible.

Edit: This is the mount and I have it mounted where that extra bit that is to the right in the image is the back of the scope. That is the only way it fits and some google image searching seems to agree that is properly mounted.

Here is a book that was actively used by my battalion's sniper section. Lots of good info in there, but it's quite dense. Expect to read and re-read. Fascinating book.

I'd ditch the idea of using a R700, go Tikka Compact Tactical Rifle or Bergara HMR.

Bergara comes with a fully adjustable stock (adjustable cheek riser and length of pull via spacers). I'm not the biggest fan of the factory stock on Tikkas but they are rigid, and a KRG Bravo would be a budget friendly upgrade for the future.

Midway is having a sale on a Vortex Viper PST Gen2 3-15x44 w/ EBR-2C reticle and 1st Focal Plane for $599 shipped

A good bipod to start out with is a Harris HBLMS 9"-13" with the podlock to "lock out the bipod."
It's on Amazon for $100+$26 for the podlock

The podlock can be seen in "Frequently Bought Together" on the product page.

I've never had an issue with keeping my face on the gun and running a bolt while shooting right or left handed.

Only thing I have left, is why 308 and not 6.5 Creedmore?

u/bjw9696 · 2 pointsr/longrange

I bought my BTR from Amazon. I have it on my Savage BA110 Stealth with the Vortex rings. It works well for the price point. Everything is more accurate than I am. The illuminated reticle is very nice in low light situations. The only beef I have is at full magnification it is very grainy. Although I knew this when I purchased it.

You could also purchase it through Opticsplanet. They currently have a 10% off code.

There is a book on Amazon called The Ultimate Sniper by John Plaster that is pretty highly reviewed. I'm tempted to get it but the price is a little steep.

It's pretty highly rated, and many sniper/longrange books on Amazon are not.

There is a hilarious flame war though in the reviews between the author and some other dick waving pro sharpshooter. Pretty entertaining reading.

Nice suggestion, especially for $160!

I updated the main post with this selection from Vortex: http://www.amazon.com/Vortex-Optics-DBK-04-BDC-Diamondback-Riflescope/dp/B001EC7KMY

I was going to add it to my wish list for when the new, reasonably priced version comes out.

It's released and costs $30 bucks.

The Cheapest Lee press is a worthwhile addition to your setup.

It's the bastard stepchild on my bench, and is relegated to depriming every piece of brass before they get tumbled as not to get dirt and primer residue on my progressive or larger single stage presses. It's often on sale for $20, and it's worth it to save the abuse on your nicer equipment.

Atlas are top of the line, however Harris are the measuring stick everything is compared to. I have both Harris and Caldwell 9"-13" that have rotation and notched legs. The Caldwell is a piece of junk in comparison.

Harris Bipods HBLMS 9-13

u/TeamFatChicks · 2 pointsr/longrange

I have a R700 magpul. I’d get a base. EGW 20 moa is a solid budget option

For rings, you could get away with Seekins Precision matched rings .82”

Many of the formulas can be found in the books:

  1. Bryan Litz's Applied Ballistics for Long Range Shooting(https://store.appliedballisticsllc.com/Ballistic_Performance_of_Rifle_Bullets_3rd_Edition_p/0010.htm) and

  2. Robert McCoys Modern Exterior Ballistics(https://www.amazon.com/Modern-Exterior-Ballistics-Robert-McCoy/dp/0764338250?keywords=robert+mccoys+modern+exterior+ballistics&qid=1538411137&sr=8-1-fkmrnull&ref=sr_1_fkmrnull_1).

However it used to take about 3 months to do a full ballistic calculation. The first computer ever (ENIAC) was designed to combat this. Reducing the time to about 3 days. Now your cell phone can do it in about 1 second. I would suggest using an app like ours to perform the calculations for you.

Competitive Shooting by A.A. Yur'yev covers this in detail, but I have no idea where to recommend the book for cheap.

Stable there’s also two spots to run small screws in. Front and back + the swivel.

There is the 20 moa version I know there is a 40 for a la or at least was because I had one.

I was mistaken, it's not a Lee powder dispenser. This is the scale I'm talking about.

If you are going with a pic rail, then these Vortex rings might work for you. They are 30mm. I don't know your scope size. I can't find any reason to dislike them. $38.00

You can't accurately gauge how loud it is because the sound is so brief. It won't hurt you but it still can be doing damage. Every shot you take without hearing protection will slowly add to the damage. There is no reversing it so by the time you notice the ringing you will be stuck with it for life. These are cheap and high quality: http://www.amazon.com/Howard-Leight-R-01526-Electronic-Earmuff/dp/B001T7QJ9O/

Messing up my hearing is one of my biggest regrets in life, don't make the same mistake. I wish I had someone stress to me the importance of hearing protection but I didn't, and now I have to live with EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE for the rest of my life.
