What he's saying is you bought the gsync version of the Acer monitor when you have an Amd card. Acer make a cheaper 75hz free sync version of the same monitor.

u/marswithrings · 10 pointsr/battlestations

sorry to be "that guy" - but actually, the freesync version of the 34" acer is the XR341CK and it's 75hz (with a fury X he would have the freesync version).

the gsync version is the X34. it's a few hundred bucks extra and 100hz.

THAT SAID, because of the adaptive sync technologies many users claim they cannot differentiate between these monitors and 144hz, so i'm totally splitting hairs on you. both monitors are really fucking nice and really fucking expensive, so your overall point is still valid

u/NPPraxis · 8 pointsr/buildapcsales

For games, no no no.

High input lag, only 60 Hz, no Freesync, poorest color results of any that Tom's Hardware reviewed, and not cheaper than the competition.

I'd go with this monitor. Same size/resolution, freesync, 75 hz, half the input lag. Admittedly, $200 more expensive.

u/noiserr · 7 pointsr/Amd

> X34 owners especially care about FreeSync.

They certanly don't considering they paid premium for the same monitor as this one: http://www.amazon.com/Acer-Curved-34-inch-UltraWide-Display/dp/B0111MRT90/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1463849268&sr=8-2&keywords=x34+predator+freesync

which costs $300 less. And its adaptive-sync tech is supported by Apple, Intel and AMD, not just Nvidia. I'd call those people uninformed.

> And Async Compute is useless when you have no additional resources to tap into

Who says you don't have additional resources to tap into? AMD wrecks Nvidia in Ashes of Singularity, which tap into those additional resources just fine.

If you want to pay more for yesterday's technology or $300 in licensing fees be my guest. But to think that it's somehow better is uninformed at best.

u/efitz11 · 6 pointsr/personalfinance

I bought myself a sweet monitor, but yes, investing the rest.

u/ISpeakDucati · 3 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

Right on, how do you like it? Would it be a good recommendation for someone with no amp/dac?

I have this amp but it's on a shelf under my desk.

Beer is Elysian's Breakbeat IPA

And yeah I know, I'm a sucker for parm lol.

Edit: Forgot the monitor, yeah it's an Acer XR341CK and I absolutely love it. I was going to wait for the Predator when I bought it two months ago but I couldn't justify the extra $600. It's 75hz stock but easily overclocked to 85hz. It was a little hard to get used to the lower refresh rate coming from a 144hz 1080p monitor, but it didn't take too long and the 3440x1440 IPS is sooooooo worth it. I don't think I can ever go back.

u/Aztechnology · 3 pointsr/nvidia

I'm not sure why given all the available information you think it doesn't increase the cost. But sure

http://www.geforce.com/hardware/technology/g-sync/diy

Nvidia was selling these at $200 +S&H. We can pretty easily extrapolate this to the increased cost of Gsync monitors.

In addition we can easily extrapolate from the cost of identical models that do or don't have G-sync.

Freesync: http://www.amazon.com/Acer-Curved-34-inch-UltraWide-Display/dp/B0111MRT90

Gsync: http://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-UltraWide-Widescreen-X34/dp/B016GNX4SE

Part of this cost is also reflective of market cost, but the difference margin on most monitors that are the same model aside from the type of sync is around $200-300 dollars. Which would imply the module cost in these circumstances.

u/smile_e_face · 3 pointsr/Monitors

Right, crash course time. I'm not really into the fighting game scene, barring watching a few EVO matches, but I'm going to go ahead and assume that they use TN panels, which prioritize high refresh rate and low input lag over picture quality. That one you linked most certainly does. If you've been using a TN monitor for a while, I'm not surprised that your friend's Predator got you thinking.

For picture quality, you have two options for panels: IPS and VA. Some people will tell you that IPS is the only way, but those people are wrong. IPS monitors clearly win the areas of color quality / vibrancy and viewing angles; TN panels have awful color shifting when viewed off-center, and VA panels, while better, aren't fantastic. On the other hand, all IPS panels bring with them the dreaded "IPS glow," a soft, pale light from the corners visible in dark content.

VA panels, on the other hand, stomp the competition when it comes to contrast - compare ~500:1 for TN, ~1000:1 for IPS, and ~3000:1 for VA - making them an excellent choice for movies. Think the difference between LCD and plasma televisions, which is actually not far off, technologically speaking. But, they're incredibly slow - there are only a handful of VA panels available with refresh rates over 60 Hz - and not really suitable for fast-paced genres like FPS.

Also, consider that both IPS and VA panels have inferior response times and input lag, compared to TN. Almost all gamer-oriented TN panels have ~1ms response times, while IPS aim for ~4ms and VA are lucky if they get ~8ms. What this means is that things might seem a little sluggish when you start out; I emphasize "might" because some people, like me, don't care about the difference, and others don't even notice it. Manufacturers attempt to fix this problem by building "overdrive" into their monitors, essentially pouring more juice into the pixels to force better response times. As you might imagine, though, this comes with its own problems, including higher input lag and "overshoot," faint trails and blurs behind fast-moving objects. This one I do care about, and it's one of those things that once you see it, you can't stop seeing it. IPS panels can suffer from this problem, but VA is where it gets really nasty.

So, in summary, you have three options:

  • TN panels, which offer blazing speed and near-CRT levels of input lag, but often have poor colors, contrast, and viewing angles. This is almost certainly what you have right now.
  • IPS panels, which offer rich colors and almost perfect viewing angles, but have only middling response times and suffer from glow. This is what your friend has.
  • VA panels, which offer fantastic contrast and middle-of-the-road colors and viewing angles, but have low refresh rates and often suffer from input lag and overshoot.

There are also other features that you might want to consider, but if you're not into PC gaming in a big way, they might be a waste. A few:

  • 1440p+ resolution. This one can be nice even if you don't game. Higher resolution makes for a clearer, crisper picture, but does significantly decrease performance in games and can flummux Windows' and Linux's UI scaling to this day. Still worth it, in my opinion. Do note that the best resolutions for each screen size are probably: 1080p for 24", 1440p for 27", 4K for anything bigger.
  • 21:9 aspect ratio ("ultra-widescreen"). I haven't used this one myself, but I hear it's pretty great, especially for games and movies. For applications, it might not perfectly replace two monitors, simply because you can't do things like full-screen a video on one monitor and work on another. It's up to you on that one.
  • 120+ Hz. Fast refresh rates allow for more fluid gameplay, provided your graphics card can hack it. That 780 is a bit long in the tooth for this, at least with recent titles. In addition, 120 Hz offers a neat bonus: it's a perfect multiple of both 24 Hz and 30 Hz, which means it will eliminate judder in nearly all media.
  • G-SYNC / FreeSync. Designed by NVIDIA and AMD, respectively, these technologies sync your display's refresh rate with your graphics card. What this means is that you can experience tear-free, buttery smooth gameplay without having to enable VSync and all the input lag nightmares that come with it. Note that, while FreeSync monitors are often competitively priced, G-SYNC adds a hefty tax, and you can't use one company's tech with the other company's graphics cards.

Well, that's just about all you really need to know about finding a new monitor. As for suggestions, I don't really keep up with all the latest models and whatnot, so I'll leave that to others. The Predator is an excellent monitor, though. If you liked your friend's so much, why not get one yourself? It's right in the middle of your budget at ~$750, and includes all of the neat features above, minus 21:9. For $50 more, the ASUS PG279Q offers a similar experience with maybe juuuust a bit better colors. Finally, Acer also offers the 34-inch, IPS, 21:9, curved XR341CK for ~$840, which is...just...wow...really quite a...reasonable price...hmmmm. There's also the G-SYNC-enabled X34, but that $400 premium is absurd.

Well, I know that was long, but I hope it helped. I just think it's always best to know what you're looking for, rather than just following some random recommendations. If you've got any questions, it's my long weekend, so ask away.

Pretty sure he means the Freesync version, which can be had for much cheaper: http://www.amazon.com/Acer-Curved-34-inch-UltraWide-Display/dp/B0111MRT90

Please be aware of the possible issues with this monitor, however ( I'm only familiar with the issues on the g-sync version, but do some research before purchase as I believe the Freesync one has issues too: http://community.acer.com/t5/Predator-Discussions/X34-Freesync-Problems-Thread-ATTN-Acer/m-p/395886#U395886 )

u/BrkoenEngilsh · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

There is no monitor on the market that does both 144hz and 4k. No connector can output at the rate you would need.
The acer preadtor x34(freesync model for any who are interested) comes close, but its a little more than $300...

Couple options for the 27 inch panel:

Asus MG279Q(IPS Freesync 4ms, 144hz, not as good as the PG, but it's cheaper, and works better with your AMD GPU thanks to freesync): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236466

This Acer(not too pretty imo but 144hz 1ms Freesync and cheap): http://www.amazon.com/Acer-XG270HU-omidpx-FREESYNC-Widescreen/dp/B00VRCLHYS/ref=sr_1_1?tag=amazon0606-20&ie=UTF8&qid=1430272001&sr=8-1&keywords=acer+xg270hu+omidpx

If you really want to save money, there is this Asus monitor(24 inches, 144hz, but TN, and only 1080p): http://www.amazon.com/Asus-VG248QE-24-Inch-LED-Lit-Monitor/dp/B00B2HH7G0/?tag=amazon0606-20

You'll have to look at these monitors for compatibility with Vesa mounts and stuff.

As far as Ultrawides go, that is a bit trickier, you might want to either stretch the budget, or cut into the $600 for the 144hz a bit to get both. I'll post suggestions anyway.

A Dell IPS 1440p ultrawide no freesync though afaik and rather expensive: http://www.amazon.com/Dell-UltraSharp-34-Inch-LED-Lit-Monitor/dp/B00PXYRMPE?tag=amazon0606-20

Crazy territory here, but this Acer has 75hz, 1440p, ips, freesync and a slick design, but its expensive as hell:
http://www.amazon.com/Acer-XR341CK-bmijpphz-34-inch-UltraWide/dp/B0111MRT90/ref=sr_1_15?tag=amazon0606-20&s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1436945804&sr=1-15&keywords=3440x1440

And a slightly cheaper but still pricey 1440p ips ultrawide from LG:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824025066&cm_re=1440p_ultrawide-_-24-025-066-_-Product

Look through, find some you like that both fit into your $1200 overall budget, make sure they would fit on a mount, find a mount, and go.

u/ImNotATexan · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

I don't see why. Anyway:

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Curved-34-inch-UltraWide-Display/dp/B0111MRT90

There are no 30" curved freesync monitors You won't even find 30" monitors.

Even with 3 of those, 10000 pounds is a silly ass number. What are you going to do , SLI Titan XPs, 18 core i9, 128gb of DDR4 and like a couple l1tb SSDs or something? Still not 10000. I mean yea you don't have to spend 10000 but that's a silly budget.

u/wingmanedu · 2 pointsr/gaming
u/shadyinternets · 2 pointsr/Monitors

have you considered 1 ultrawide? you would only have to give up the decent refresh rate part as to get 100hz is going to be at least $1,000 if you find a refurb or something.

something like this, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Q7VCSGU/ref=psdc_1292115011_t1_B00PXYRMPE

you will be at 60hz but the 1070 should push it nicely.

otherwise you are prob not going to find what you want at that price point, would have to spend a little more for something like https://www.amazon.com/Acer-XG270HU-omidpx-FREESYNC-Widescreen/dp/B00VRCLHYS/ref=sr_1_3?

what about something like this? people claim to get it to 85hz, its 1440p, no bezel since ultrawide and not a ton over your budget. https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Curved-34-inch-UltraWide-Display/dp/B0111MRT90?

dropping from 1440p to 1080p would also open up more options.

34-inch 144Hz Ultrawide QHD Curved (3440x1440) 21:9

u/MRbraneSIC · 1 pointr/redditblack

well up until this weekend I was running 3 BenQ GL2760H 27-inch monitors {photo of the setup} and this was my setup for quite some time (since April lolz). I also have a 4K Samsung monitor in that photo. I'm getting rid of the monitors because most games do not support triple monitors and I'm tired of the UI issues...some games are completely unplayable with 3 monitors (like Shadow of Mordor).

Right now, I'm in the middle of dumping my monitors and getting a new one. I'm in the process of selling one of the BenQ's to teeREKT and another was just sold on Amazon. I might be considering selling my last one (my only concern is trying to console game on my new monitor with it's aspect ratio of 21:9).

My new monitor (which is coming on Wednesday) is the Acer XR341CK. 34" Ultrawide curved IPS 3440x1440 resolution, 4ms response time, AMD FreeSync (range from 35Hz^^? to 75Hz...FreeSync/G Sync is a new technology where the monitor has a variable refresh rate and works with your GPU; whatever FPS your GPU is putting out is matched by the Hz of the monitor. This means if my FPS drops down to 40 from 60, I shouldn't see any issue (input lag/screen tearing) and theoretically I could have VSync on without any issues...with VSync on, dropping down to just 59 FPS on a 60Hz monitor would mean that it locks your FPS to 30 or 45 (a multiple of your monitor's refresh rate) so that it can be sure that there's no screen tearing...but this increases input lag usually). If there isn't a battlestation thread on Wednesday, I'll post images of my new setup and start one.

EDIT: As for your monitor, I personally find 60Hz to be fine but it's the mantra of PCMasterRace that anything not 144Hz is garbage. IPS is great colors and viewing angles, but are notorious for light bleed issues (only a problem if you game without lights on and play/watch content that has a lot of blacks, or you need true color representation across every inch of the panel). TN panels are going to be cheaper and you can get 144Hz fairly reasonable; 1440p at 144Hz is fairly expensive still (hard to refresh that many pixels that quickly) so if you want that sweet sweet 144Hz in your budget, you'll have to stick with 1080p more than likely. 5ms or less is the recommended sweet spot for response time; 1ms is only needed for the competitive side IMO. There's another type of panel (like APV or something like that) which is generally better but it's new^^? and better so the price is higher. G Sync is going to be out of your price range right now. Flickerless is a good benefit to have; less eye-strain. I would also recommend a monitor that has a 'low blue light' mode if you're going to game at night a lot; blue light affects our body, telling it that the sun is out so we need to be awake (reduces the melatonin generated by your body at night).

Just some general thoughts on monitor shopping. BenQ is kinda the gaming standard right now, but specs are more important than brand.

starting to realize I have a lot of random info in my brain that I never get to use lol

u/PotassiumSorbet · 1 pointr/buildapcsales

It's not bad. I think the reason you see the refurbished all the time is that's the only time there is a deal on this monitor, ecause brand new it is over $1,000 https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0111MRT90/ref=dp_olp_0?ie=UTF8&condition=all&qid=1480613320&sr=8-1

I've been trying to find a good 1440p ultrawide as well. I think the Acer XR341CK is a pretty good priced and well spec'd monitor.

BenQ XR3501 $749

Acer XR341CK $674

And if you want IPS:

ASUS ROG SWIFT PG348Q $1,182

Acer Predator X34 $1,230

Not sure if this counts as plenty, but there are the current options that I am aware of.

u/aleramz · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

> PG278Q

It's a nice investment if you're into 1440p TN 144hz panels, but there are other options, Acer Predator XB271HU for slightly higher price, your get a IPS panel (trust me, the difference between a TN and IPS is insane, and input lag really doesn't matter between 1-8ms), this panel goes over 165 hz if you slightly overclock it (and Acer supports it), but standart 144hz is rule for that Acer Monitor, I'm planning to purchase this monitor in a few months, or heck even go nuts to buy the Predator X34 or this other XR341CK, the X34 is G-Sync and the other XR34 is FreeSync.

u/Zocheyado · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

u/aP1atypus · 1 pointr/buildapc

Okay so nice list but:

Go ahead and get water cooling for the CPU. Closed loop would work just fine.

Upgrade the GPU to the 980ti, or better, if you can wait there are new GPUs coming out this year (should be before summer).

Get better HDD capacity. you can get 3TB for like 20 bucks more.

650w is good for the PSU but if you can get more, go ahead for the sake of future proofing. With Multi-adapter on DX12 now available, you may want to add another gpu to your setup at some point.

For the monitor, don't get 4k. If you're building for VR, it could spoil you. Plus it's not worth the price. I would recommend a 144hz 1440p display. Curved would be awesome. Hard to find a display with all of those features though so here is a few options with 2 of the 3.
1080p, 144Hz, Curved
1440p, 75Hz, Curved

Good Luck!

As far as I know it's the Predator without G-Sync.

Whether you want one or multiple depends on what you're doing. If you want multitasking for coding or something, I think double/triple monitors is a better setup. If you're mostly gaming/browsing, one is sufficient.

The non gsync Acer variant, I didn't want to spend ~$350 extra on just gsync that the predator version has. I like gsync, my 24" has it, but it's not worth that much, imo.

I have an X34, the curve is barely noticeable.

I would ask, have you tried an ultra-wide monitor though? I know a lot of people who just immediately write it off with "I don't need that!" but then they try it and are impressed and agree, for gaming, it is much more immersive.

And here is the Free-Sync X34 perfect for your AMD card and it's $200+ cheaper without the G-Sync module.

u/Plutonium_man · 1 pointr/pcgaming

Yeah you'll have to get a new gpu every 3 years at least to keep up with 144 fps. To give you an idea, ultrawide becomes as difficult as 144hz to run when you get to 100 hz ultrawide.

I actually don't know anything about how ultrawide monitors perform other than their high cost. I looked the other day and a freesync IPS was like 1k :/

They probably do sell TN panels. Typically when a new monitor format comes out it releases as TN first because it's the easier panel to make

Here's the 1300 g-sync version (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016GNX4SE/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_Cm1kxbQZTJQ4F) and 1000 freesync version (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0111MRT90/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_Il1kxbNM59SZN) of the same monitor.

Honestly I think a grand is a bit much for a monitor... So maybe it's not actually the best idea after all. But if you can afford it that's great. You can get a freesync 144hz 1440p IPS for like 600 dollars, so the g-sync would be about 800 dollars. As of now, my fury x plays most of the newest games around 90-100 fps at the highest settings. So my 144hz monitor is useful because I get to see those higher framerates, but I only hit 144 in older games or simple games.

[Acer G257HU] (http://www.amazon.com/Acer-G257HU-smidpx-25-Inch-Widescreen/dp/B00QS0AKVK?tag=amazon0606-20) $260 -- this is a really good monitor for the price if you're on a budget. It doesn't have freesync, but it's great for the price if you don't care about screen tear. Hey, that rhymes! LOL

[Acer H277H] (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0148NNKU6/ref=twister_B016E49WWW?tag=amazon0606-20&_encoding=UTF8&psc=1) $280 same goes for this one! it's 1080p so it won't be taxing on your system like 4K would. 1440p isn't that taxing as well if you adjust your settings :)

If you are playing FPS shooters, having freesync could be a beneficial thing for you :) so consider that!

Hope this helps!

EDIT: quick side note! WAIT FOR COMPUTEX BEFORE YOU BUY ANYTHING! I can't tell you how many times people buy hardware before new ones get announced/come out, and then they beat themselves up. Consider these options as a pathway, but you should 1. Do more research on the things you look for in a monitor besides the things I've mentioned before and 2. Wait until something better gets released since you said you are planning to do a PC build in the near future. Wait for AMD's new architecture, named Polaris, to drop. Wait for benchmarks. Wait for monitors at computex to be announced, and then make a decision! :) All these things can help.

Why? Because I'm planning to do a PC build myself in the near future! :)

Wait wait now I am really confused I thought the $1200 version shown here was the Gsync version while the XR341CK was Freesync?

u/eliminate1337 · 1 pointr/buildapc

I don't own this yet, but I'm saving for an Acer XR341CK. 1440p ultrawide, 75 Hz, freesync, IPS, it's got everything. $880 though...

Care to enlighten me as to what besides G-Sync is driving the cost of this monitor up $615.85 USD?

The Acer XR 34 does all of those except 100fps. It's pretty good for what it is.

For those of you who care about G-Sync/FreeSync, something to note: This particular model does not feature either! It is apart of Acer's "Professional" series instead of the "Gaming" series of monitors. (the "gaming" series are the ones that feature G-Sync/Freesync tech)
