You know that plastic thing that your rounds come in from the factory?Duct tape that to your stock. Or buy This or this

For handgun, the following is a good list in 9mm, but not exhaustive:

  • CZ 75B (this would be my pick and will cost ~$450 new)
  • Used .38 special S&W Model 10 with a 4" barrel (these are easy to find for ~$300 and are great shooters)
  • Used 3rd Gen all steel S&W semi in 9mm
  • Glock 17/19
  • Springfield XD
  • CZ P07
  • S&W M&P

    Rifles:

  • Used Marlin Lever in .30-30, find a 16" barrel version and add a cheap cartridge holder.

You should really consider a shotgun: Used Mossberg 500 or Remington 870

I did a raised comb on my wife's rifle by using a $5 ammo sleeve then cut down an old gel filled keyboard pad and sliding it under the sleeve.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dzGOsL7i_M&feature=related I took ideas from this guy but I just bought some wood friendly stain remover and let that sit for a bit then scraped it off with a putty knife then sanded it down and stained it.
