Platform: PC
Issue: Visual jitter when ADS'ing on high-refresh monitor
Repro Steps:
Result: Animation noticeably jitters and appears to be lower than the monitor's target refresh rate, despite that the actual frame rate remains constant.
Other notes:
I'm using the ASUS ROG SWIFT PG278QR at 165hz. I've tried modifying in-game settings to no avail, including ambient occlusion, anti-aliasing, & render scale. All motion blur and film grain is turned off or to 0.
I was using the AK-47 ironsights when this happened, but it also happened when I switched to the Desert Eagle. I do not suspect this is weapon-dependent.
People in other threads have noted that it looks like the ADS transition animation plays out at 60hz despite that the monitor's target refresh rate is much higher. I would go so far as to say it feels like 30hz to me, but that's the sensation. It's like a vsync is suddenly applied to lock the refresh rate at 60 or 30hz during the ADS transition and then stops.
In my opinion, this should be a high priority issue. It completely ruins the feel of moment-to-moment gameplay. I will cancel my pre-order if this is not fixed soon.
EDIT: I can confirm that crouching also creates the same jitter / animation issue. The ENTIRE GAME looks like it's lower FPS. If you spam crouch you can really get the effect.
Wow that monitor is 600 bucks and he's still playing on McDonald's wifi? I bet his whole rig is over 2000$ if that's his monitor, I feel scared taking my monitor (same one) to a friend's house let alone out in public.
This is the one you want. 1ms 165hz gsync

I have it. Excellent.

That monitor is 3440x1440 which is not 4k (3840x2160 as pointed out by another commenter) - so you won't get 4k on it. You will be able to get 1440p in theory (I can't find a definitive answer on this, but there were a lot of reports "confirming" support for it on Xbox One X at some point - but I don't think it is there now.)
I have a 32" 4k monitor (Acer Predator) and I cannot run my Xbox One X on it at 4k because it is using an outdated HDMI interface. I didn't buy the monitor for that, but I didn't test it as I have been experimenting with monitors vs 4k TV for gaming.
So if you buy a monitor for your Xbox One X make sure it is true 4K/UHD and has HDMI 2+ ports (and not 1.X like my predator). I'd recommend waiting for HDR10 monitors though.
I think these are the best choices today:

I think this will be the best choice when it ships:
http://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-32UK950-W-4k-uhd-led-monitor
I may buy one or more of these to test - if so I will post a review here. Right now I am using:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N4ENDXR/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Which I bought to test out the refresh rate. I'm not sure I love it and I think I want a 32" monitor.
Hope that's helpful.

For 587$ and Asus is a premium brand.
980 Ti & i7-7700k with max settings on this monitor, overclocked a bit gets me to 80 FPS. I run g-sync so I don't really bother with lowering settings to get a higher FPS, but figured you could use the information.
Thank you for your thoughts!
Some background on this build: it will be used for gaming and additionally daily software development/data science.
I kept the CPU down as I was worried about thermal, but I could do a 9900K if that wouldn't be a problem.
My reason for the "over-the-top"-ness of this build is that I haven't changed my current build in quite some time (my current CPU is a 3770K), and just wanted to be as future-proof as possible in the event that I do the same with this one.
I went with that SSD as the PRO series supposedly has better lifespan and long-term performance. That said I have had both EVO and PRO and never had a problem with either.
I have this monitor (1440p at 144Hz). I hope to step to 4K in the future and was planning for that. I do some data science for work and the GPU is also to train some models locally.
The 32GB RAM is helpful for the types of workloads I will have, and future-proofing for gaming.
The issues with the PSU cables are good to know and I was considering custom cabling to keep everything clean. I was mostly concerned with having the cables able to be routed around the AIO as much as possible. Do you have any recommendations for custom cabling?

This is from my experience, it will be different from most comments I seen online, so take it as you will. I got a 165hz monitor with G-sync. As far as I am aware, it is suppose to only "turns on" when you go bellow your refresh rate. To "use it properly" for CSGO, you have to cap your fps around 3~5 fps bellow your refresh rate (so around 162 for me) because supposedly if you do not cap your fps and you hover around 165 fps, you will be turning it on and off and will get bad input delay as it changes back and fort. However, I have it on all the time and do not notice a difference when it goes bellow 165 fps, and to be fully honest, I do not feel a difference in "smoothness/less choppy" in csgo with it off or on, nor an input delay. I hover around 240 fps in csgo, go as low as 150 fps at times in online matches, and get around 110 fps in offline maps with full bots, it feels the same to me with it on or off. (and even when I do no notice tearing, it is never enough for me to say "I need it on", but I do say why I leave it on all the time bellow.).
I get around 240 fps(at 1440p), and at first I tried "using properly", by both console command (fps_max 162) and trough RivaTurner (set to 162 fps), but they caused more issues. Both made the game feel more sluggish. Looking side to side did not improve smoothness as it felt the same and only made a slight difference when doing quick 180 turns (so not often), but I distinctly remember saying that my mouse felt like its sens got lowered when it was on. I tried to play a few matches with g-sync on with capped fps to get used to it, and although I did, I much preferred to play turn it off due to the stuttering and input delay I felt back then. However, in games outside CSGO where I do not get high fps, having g-sync on is a must. I am too lazy to switch it on/of when switching games, so I just left it on all the time, but left csgo fps uncapped. In csgo, I do not notice a difference in input delay when it goes bellow 165 fps and back and forts (happens a lot during normal matches), but most importantly, I do not feel a difference in terms of choppiness/tearing most of the time as I am not constantly look for enemies behind me, and even when I get low fps(110 fps) it is still high fps. The only difference was when I capped my fps, but left uncapped I was fine. I do remember feeling a bit of a delay when I first started using g-sync in csgo through my mouse, but I got used to it quickly where I now do not even notice if there is one now. Did a quick test now, turn it off and on, look side to side, and even capped my fps at 60 to see if I saw a difference in choppiness/tearing, as well as input delay. I felt that at 60 fps there was a bit more choppiness/tearing but mainly when I do quick 180 turns, but the input delay felt the same. Around 110/162 fps I did not feel a difference in tearing/choppiness and once again, did not feel the input delay, probably because I am used to it now.
(I personally believe capping your fps makes the game more sluggish rather than gsync alone. When I put fps_max 300 or even fps_max 999, I feel a difference than when I set it to fps_max 0. Even on my old 144hz monitor without g-sync, I felt a difference in smoothness between capped and uncapped. I rather take longer to load the map than have a sluggish feeling when I look side to side).
G-sync really only shines in games where you do not get high fps (around or below 60). In games outside of CSGO, I do notice that with g-sync there is a small mouse input delay (almost as if my sens gets lower with it on), but after you play for a while you get used to rather quickly, as it is consistent and is not changing back and forts. In these games, g-sync is amazing (fallout 4, Mass effect Andromeda, Witcher 3, etc.), where playing on max settings gets me around 50~70 fps, where if I have g-sync off and I look side to side, I notice the tearing right away. Gotta have my G-sync on.
(Also, freesync is a bit worse than gsync in terms off input delay according to most reviewers, but it works quite well. My second monitor is a 4k freesync monitor, my nvidia 1070 card only "partly supports it" so I cannot fully say if it will perform better on an AMD graphics card and on a monitor above 60hz, but I feel that it did what it was suppose to at making games look better at low fps. I did feel a input delay but I also remember getting used to it rather quickly, and also feeling that in games where I do not get above 60 fps (most games at 4k), it was a must to have it on. And once again, felt that it was unnecessary for csgo as I was getting around 100 fps at 4k, and freesync also only kicks in when you go bellow your refresh rate.)
As I said, most comments I see online mentioned that it makes csgo feel way to different with it on, just as many pros that have tried it, but for me it feels the same, probably because I got used to it. I would personally blame more on the capping the fps rather than g-sync alone.

165hz and new panel, but otherwise everything else is about the same. I would HIGHLY recommend you buy a monitor locally and not online. When you buy any of these monitors you are playing the panel lottery, they make these panels very thin and sometimes the bleed is very bad. I had to return mine twice when I first bought it due to bleed problems, but third times the charm! Served me well for the past 3 years and hoping it will last me another 3 or longer.
This is not specific to ASUS, it's related to all TN/IPS panels. A little bleed is normal, but sometimes it's really bad.
If you have an OC'd i7 or R5/7 and you're fine at 1080p, a 240 Hz monitor might be good just "for gaming." Considering as of right now nobody can really achieve 160+ FPS in PUBG with any setup, it's not a good fit for it. I'd recommend a 1440p 144 Hz panel as many other people have said. Preferably with G-Sync because you have an Nvidia card. The ASUS ROG Swift PG278QR is pretty good. There's also an Acer Predator XB271HU which is pretty much the same specs.

the 2700x will absolutely destroy the i7 8700k in streaming. Of course they offer performance in streaming with extra cores... The 8700k have less cores but faster core speed which is efficient for high fps, but this is not so good when youre streaming because you have to run more tasks while gaming.
Haha you get my dilemma perfectly.

I would pass on that LG, the resolution isn't going to push your 2080ti much at all. If you're set on ultra-wide, I'd go with this instead This might be (totally is) the best ultra-wide monitor on the planet. Pricey but its simply stunning.
Personally, I don't think ultra-wide is worth it. If you think you can go without it, and would love to save yourself a few hundred dollars, check out this monitor... 1440p 165hz, it is incredible
OP WAIT, I'd ditch the ROG swift and grab the ASUS PG278QR. Its not only 165HZ 1440p with g-sync 27", but its 200 dollars cheaper on amazon than the one you've listed.

Is this the monitor your referring to? Cause it is not much more than the one i was looking at so I might as well get it since it is Gsync.
As far as the display, there's nothing wrong with TN displays as long as they aren't the really cheap ones. If you were a professional photographer I would suggest getting an IPS. I'm a gamer and work as a tech and all my displays are TN. My newest monitor, the ASUS PG278QR 27 inch was almost $700 and it's a TN and it's great.
As far as the laptop, I would avoid Dell if possible. In my work as a tech, Dell and Acer computers seem to have significantly more problems than any other brand. Check out Toshiba, Asus, Lenovo, HP, and even MSI (might be overkill for your needs though).
What's your budget? Where do you live? What are you planning to use the laptop for?
So, a few days ago I was interested in a 4K HDR 144Hz monitor. Well after looking at prices and prioritizing things, I've decided to just go for framerate for now - I can get a 4K HDR TV with OLED at a decent price. Trying to combine all 3 of these was a little too expensive.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N4ENDXR/
Did I do good? I went for GSync because it's supposed to be superior to FreeSync.
Professional Opinion: Do not buy a 4k monitor for an FPS. Go with a 2k with 144hz. Spend the money, the monitor will outlive your GPU anyways. 4k are not up to par yet until next gen HDMI/Display Port.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N4ENDXR/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It's not cheap, especially to ship to where you are I would imagine. But this monitor has kept me happy since I bought it at launch. I run 3 of them now.
Take the wife out to dinner and get her nails done before you break the news to her though.
Also, I have a very similar rig. Just slightly upgraded mobo, more RAM, and larger case for liquid cooling.
If you want something cheap to play on while you save up (and can use as a secondary monitor if you have desk space), I'd go with the BenQ brand. Cheap and reliable, just geared more toward consoles.
The monitor I use is a ASUS PG278QR G-Sync.
This is what I'm thinking.
I don't quite understand why so many monitors can turn sideways now. Not sure what people would use that for.

This is the one I have. Still a TN panel so colors aren’t as good as they could be but still a step up from my 240hz panel. The PG279Q is an IPS panel that is 165hz and 1ms response, basically the step up from my panel.
Reductions in price can come from the retailer, the manufacturer or both.
I think we now see more manufacturer price breaks now in BF because they are doing it across North America.
Does Boxing day have more retailer discounts? Maybe. I don't think so. Could be the case in stores which is the idea behind boxing day. People went in to return gifts so you hook them with a discount while they are in the store. But we buy most of our electronics online now.
Best deal was this
https://www.amazon.ca/BenQ-EX2780Q-Gaming-Monitor-DCI-P3/dp/B07X51X3CB/ref=sr_1_23?keywords=benq+27+inch+monitor&qid=1575049057&smid=A3DWYIK6Y9EEQB&sr=8-23
I missed the lightning deal overthinking it and reading posts on here when they did a 399 lightning deal. It's still a great deal at 499 if you don't mind the shitty stand.
I ended up buying this
https://www.mikescomputershop.com/product/10477209
for 599, hoping the $100 more for nano ips will be worth it (narrator: it won't)
This one is also a good deal by Canadian standards:

Several people on this sub bought them when they dropped it to 699 on Best buy a few weeks ago

You can take off one of the 32GB kit and put it toward either Asus ROG Swift PG278QR or PG279Q. If you plan to play games like Destiny or game for the graphic quality over competitive performance then get IPS panel. If you want performance over quality for competitive edge then get TN panel.

I have the TN panel and have no regrets :)
The red ring that lights up around the base is what I'm referring to. I want no secondary colors on my monitor as I am making a monochromatic first build. Basically all of the models here
It's actually a PG278QR ;)
something like this https://www.amazon.com/Swift-PG278QR-G-SYNC-Gaming-Monitor/dp/B01N4ENDXR
hmm i started out with a 65Hz monitor at 1080p and i had the same dilemma of either going for aesthetics or pure gaming performance. I went with gaming peformance and got a 180hz monitor and the difference is night and day.
Now im aiming to get a 2k monitor that is purely for aesthetics - like a benq 2K IPS 100% colour monitor.
So my suggestion is either go for a gaming one or go for an aesthetics one for single player games and movies etc.

Would you guys recommend this for 1440 gaming? Trying to replace my current gaming monitor which in all honesty was carried over from my console and isn’t great for getting the most out of my new build.
Looking for other suggestions too.

Can't really help with the decision, but you can get the Asus one for about $20 cheaper than your link if you go through Amazon
Once I am ready and this drops to about $500ish this what ill get ASUS 27" 165hz 1ms 1440p GSYNC
ASUS ROG Swift PG278QR 27” Gaming Monitor 1440p 1ms 165Hz DP HDMI G-SYNC Eye Care is $540 right now
https://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX65525
27" IPS 1440p 165hz G-Sync. This seems to be the one everyone is drooling over. Seems to already be a hot buy at $699 previously.
edit amazon and best buy as well: https://www.amazon.ca/PG278QR-2560x1440-G-SYNC-Gaming-Monitor/dp/B01N4ENDXR/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1542378670&sr=8-1&keywords=pg278qr

> Also get a 1440p 144Hz IPS monitor with this level of build.
And I highly recommend going with a Gsync monitor if he can save up for it on the side. I upgraded from a cheap 60 hz 1080p TN panel to a 144 hz IPS gsync monitor. It's like I'm looking through liquid glass at pure fluid color. I can't even describe it.

Before I got this monitor, I never even knew what gaming was.
Whoops! I had actually meant to select the 27" Asus ROG: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01N4ENDXR/?tag=pcpapi-20
Do you have thoughts on the ROG versus the Dell you linked? Seems to be similar specs.
Also, thanks for the case switch!
I'm not sure what prices are where you live but I would go with this monitor.
https://www.amazon.com/PG278QR-2560x1440-G-SYNC-Monitor-DisplayPort/dp/B01N4ENDXR
Got everything you'd need, 1ms response time, IPS panel, 165hz refresh rate, 1440p.
Should I go for the PG278QR? From you guys it seems like the best option.
I had terrible headaches and burning eyes quite often at work but when gaming at home it wasn't all that bad. At home I use this monitor whereas at work I have to use 3 cheap dell screens.
I bought a pair of glasses at the optician's specifically for blue light filtering. They were very expensive but definitely worth the price. I haven't had any issues at work any more. They were +- 350 euros so you might be better off investing in a new monitor if you were to spend that much money.
The glasses you mention are definitely a cheaper option but I have no experience with those.
the ASUS product support guy meant 278 instead of 279, which is obvious because he calls it a TN panel

If you're buying from amazon, they occasionally have the option to spread the payment out over the course of 5 months, it's just a different purchase option. No finance charges, additional paper work or anything like that.
This seems to be a popular monitor.
https://www.amazon.com/Swift-PG278QR-G-SYNC-Gaming-Monitor/dp/B01N4ENDXR/
$569 or 114/mo for 5 months.
Yeah, take it from me. I bought a https://www.amazon.com/Swift-PG278QR-G-SYNC-Gaming-Monitor/dp/B01N4ENDXR/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1551053364&sr=8-1 thinking the same thing. Amazing monitor, but G-Sync was just a negative experience for me in almost every situation.
https://www.amazon.com/PG278QR-G-SYNC-Gaming-Screen-Monitor/dp/B01N4ENDXR/ref=dp_ob_title_ce
I think it's this one. Which is the newer model (and $100 less) of the one you sent me.
TN panel option
IPS panel option
Both have a stand that fits better on my desk, GSYNC in 30-165hz range. Not curved, but I'm willing to sacrifice that.

Thanks a lot for the reccomendations I'll look more into them, I've also looked into some monitors as well and this has caught my eye, it seems really good. But it's DP and not TP like you said, but it has a display port like you said.

Yea you’re right, I’ve been eyeing this one:
ASUS ROG Swift PG278QR 27" Gaming Monitor 1440p 1ms 165Hz DP HDMI G-SYNC Eye Care https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N4ENDXR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_AcYoDb8DV0QPH
Honestly, I’ve never had anything bigger than a 27.” Good luck on your build mate!
Yes, I did see some distasteful comments about Acer support. This was the ASUS monitor I was considering: https://www.amazon.com/PG279Q-2560x1440-G-SYNC-Gaming-Monitor/dp/B01N4ENDXR/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1509493821&sr=8-1&keywords=PG279Q&th=1 but 21 hz for 150 bucks did not sound too appealing for me.
See if this is on sale in your country. It's considerably cheaper in the US for prime members today. I know it's TN, but there is an IPS version available. Plus you can also use color profiles which make my VG248QE look like an IPS.

I have this one and im really enjoying it:
Asus ROG SWIFT PG278QR 27.0" 2560x1440 165 Hz Monitor
It has gsync

I found this on Craigslist for $375. I'm assuming this would be a good purchase?
There is no 4k 144hz gsync monitor. I'm currently waiting for a 27" 1440p 144hz gsync monitor to go on sale.
I've narrowed it down to 3 based on reviews and recommendations from here and elsewhere.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06ZXZ3QBD/ref=sspa_mw_detail_0?psc=1
It's a bit of a waste of money though.
For less you could've gotten a PG278QR and the same width in resolution but 1440p in height. And still with 160Hz refresh rate.
Edit: Nevermind, OP's UW is in 1440P so that's fine, looks like product page on amazon isn't up to date. But a 1080P ultrawide would've been a bad buy.
