I do that as well. I just use one of these, hook up directly the camera, and it will import your photos.

You could just plug a USB female to USB micro male into the phone, and use a mouse instead.

You can get around the lack of SD card slot on the Motorola Moto X very easily. Just get an OTG cable or an adapter like this, or this. Then plug a 64 GB microSD card like this into it. Problem solved!
