I have one of these. Doesn't even have different color keys.

Protip: if you remove the keys to clean the keyboard out, label them first.

Looks like it's a DasKeyboards 3 Model S Ultimate. Amazon Link. Either MX Browns or MX Blues, I'm not sure which because I don't have much experience with either and haven't pulled a key yet. It's got Blues.

I'm not sure how much you plan to type in the future, but if you are taking up programming or some profession, try getting a mechanical keyboard with blank keycaps like this.

1. You wont be able to poke type if you tried. It forces you to type with ten fingers without looking at your keyboard. It's scary at first, but you'll learn very quickly. Think rosetta stone, but for keyboards.
   
   
2. Mechanical keyboards are amazing to type on. They provide constant pressure/resistance when typing, and are used by most professionals.

That's what I use. I didn't even realize there were different quality keyboards until I got it. Using regular keyboards just feel funny now.

Off the top of my head, a keyboard that comes with blanks stock is the Das Keyboard 4 Ultimate as well as Das Model S Ultimate.

I've owned a Model S Ultimate, it was a great keyboard. Case is a glossy finish, though, so it gets shiny and it's a fingerprint magnet. Stock keycaps are also kind of thin ABS meaning they'll show signs of wear somewhat quickly.

If you want to spend a bit more over your $100 budget, the Das Keyboard Model S Ultimate ($117) is a really good option. They're one of (if not the) best mechanical keyboard brands. Very reliable and they look pretty nice. If you want to spend a bit less, the CM Storm Quickfire Pro ($95 after rebate) is a great option. I'm actually typing this from a Quickfire Pro right now - had it for a few months and I love it.

Basic rundown of most readily available key switches from what I understand:

• Blues and browns have feedback (audible click and bump in the blues and a tactile bump in the browns).
  
  
• Blues are most likely the "button clicking" keyboards you're referring to. Blues are generally regarded as best for typing, but they can be okay for gaming too if you don't mind the noise.
  
  
• Browns are what I use now, they provide the bump without the noise. They strike a good balance between gaming performance and typing performance.
  
  
• Blacks and reds are both linear, no special tactile feedback. Both black and red switches have a smooth feel. The keys just press straight down and come back up, no bump or click in between. Blacks and reds are also the "best" gaming switches.
  
  
• Only difference between blacks and reds are that blacks are a bit harder to press down. Well, not hard to press, just takes a bit more force. Blacks are good if you prefer a stiffer feel, compared to the lighter/mushier feel of the reds.

neither one required a driver update, and I have never heard of needing to update drivers for a new mouse/keyboard.

New drivers for a GPU, absolutely, way too often these days, but for peripherals? Sorry but you're full of shit.

I can use one of these and type near 200 wpm.

The first keyboard I bought and the one I use the most is the Das Keyboard Model S Ultimate with Cherry MX Blues.. I use it daily, but I don't think it's my favorite anymore because I had to RMA it due to its USB controller failing and melting the board slightly. Other than that I love its blue switches and the fact that it made me learn how to touch type. It also cemented my love of blues because I love the clack noise. I've used browns and reds a bit and while I like them, the noise makes me happy inside.

If I were to buy something more in line with my tastes today, I'd probably go for a tenkeyless (aka no numpad, the TKL I was talking about in my first comment) board because my desk space is cramped compared to when I bought the das, and it makes me type at an askew angle that I'm sure isn't good for my spine or whatever. I'd also skip out on a backlit board, because I like to game in total darkness and don't like stuff glowing to distract me.

So, my favorite board would be something like a WASD 88 key with blues that I customize to be some color I like, and then a numpad off to the side so that I can still have one (I use it too much) without ruining my posture.

I have a project board, and old IBM Model F XT that a friend found in an old computer storage room that I plan on getting working on a modern PC and sprucing up by cleaning and painting it some obnoxious color. It won't be my favorite board to type on, I bet, but I'd love to pull it out for its sheer oddity.

This is my keyboard of choice. You don't have to go blank, but I highly recommend a mechanical keyboard. So clicky. So good.

I'm completely new to mechanical keyboards and looking to get my first one.

I really don't know which kind of switch I want, but I've heard that Cherry MX Blues are the best for noobs. I'm sort of worried about the sound though, maybe I will end up with the browns.

Here are a few keyboards I've been looking at:

• Rosewill RK9000 - looks like the best value in terms of price, but right now I can only get it with blues.
  
• Unicomp SpaceSaver M - Mac buckling spring keyboard. A buckling spring keyboard looks good, but I don't know about the sound level or the build quality of this model.
  
• CM Storm QuickFire Rapid - I think the TKL layout might take some getting used to but I can manage... overall it looks pretty good.
  
• Das Keyboard Ultimate If I were to spend my money on looks this is what I would get. I would get this (Browns, silent model) but $150 is a lot compared to the other ones on this list.
  
• Matias Tactile Pro - Another mac-y keyboard.
  
• And if I am really spending money I would get something from WASD probably.
  
  Since I use a Mac, I would rather have something with normal keycaps so I can switch Windows and Alt (and get this if the windows keys have that stupid circular recess on them).
  
  Any ideas on what to get? Is the Das Keyboard worth the money (it seems like the only one I can get with browns)? Should I get something else entirely?

I would love a das keyboard. It is such a shame the blackwidow is the only cheap mechanical keyboard you can easily get in the UK. The das ultimate is my dream keyboard but just for a comparison here is the cost:

Hi all, I want to purchase a mechanical keyboard soon but I'm not sure which to pick. Info:

I bought a mechanical key switch tester on Amazon with 6 keys and decided I like blue (and green - which seem more rare) switches. I don't care about the amount of noise produced. I have read about issues with certain mechanical keyboards on Linux (like several Corsair models), so I'm trying to stay clear of those. I'm considering several which are linked below.

I'm really impressed by the reviews (and the price) of the Pictek 104 ($60, 4.9 out of 5), but the switches are not Cherry - they are made by Gaote. I'm also concerned that this is called a 'gaming' keyboard (despite having blue switches??) given my needs.

The Das Model S ($140) looks like a great keyboard and I've heard good things about this brand, however, many of the reviews for other Das keyboards were really not great. I'm willing to pay $150 for a solid keyboard, but in my mind, a keyboard for that price should be perfect. A lower price is obviously better, but at the same time, I don't want to pay $60 for a keyboard and then have to upgrade 6 months later. The HAVIT ($82) is a somewhat of a compromise between the Pictek and the Das.

I'm willing to give up the numpad and go tenkeyless if others have strong recommendations here.

Unreleased [Was released 3 months ago, wow!] Game that supposedly exposes you to the world of Depression. I've suffered enough to think that I could be a good guinea pig, and flesh out any inaccuracies, while still hoping to enjoy the experience.

Currently the one game that I want more than anything else. A first person puzzle game (reminds me a little of Portal), with a bit of mind-bending game play that's sure to frustrate me to no end. Quite likely to be the only game I won't try to Google the answers to, no matter how frustrated I may get.

• Mark of the Ninja
This is number two on my "I Want This Now" list. The visuals and play style look absolutely beautiful, and you have the option to stealth it out or kill your way through, but you still can't be reckless. 2-D platforming with added functionality to really make it a better looking ninja game than most on the market.

• Psychonauts
There are days where I watch the trailer and think, "I really need to play this game." Then there are other days where my thoughts are, "Why the hell would I play Psychonauts, like, ever?!" It's a struggle, and I think it's because the visual style and overall tone remind me a lot of American McGee's Alice, and the personal struggles I was going through when that game was a big part of my life.

• Alice: Madness Returns
Speaking of American McGee's Alice, here's the sequel! Something about the play style being changed to a more fleshed out platformer makes this installment seem more appealing. The style and tone are still dark and grim, but maybe because the actual graphics are better and more well-rounded, the theme doesn't set me back to my own personal dark days.

• FTL: Faster Than Light
A rogue-like that's set in space? Sign me up! I need a little variety, and FTL (along with the amazing soundtrack) seem to fit right in.
