This is astoundingly bad advice. I'm disappointed it's in the positives.

Fine motor control goes to shit in a life or death situation. Add in darkness, and you've compounded the situation dramatically.

In a home without kids, unlocked and ready to go is how you want your home defense weapon stored, and it should be close to you, not anywhere else in the house where it's more likely to be used against you. In a home with kids, you should be using something that can be unlocked as fast as possible, like a biometric safe that requires no coordination or eyesight to unlock.

I've had this for over a year and love it. I know it's over your stated budget. It's a bio unit. I have mine and the wife's fingerprints scanned into it. Opens quickly, is small, but still holds 2 1911's. It also goes with us on long road trips for the hotel. http://www.amazon.com/Gunvault-MVB500-Microvault-Biometric-Pistol/dp/B001UAMZD4

I protect my family first with two loud dogs. The hope being, their alarm would give me enough time to retrieve the .357 Mag from the biometric gun vault mounted in my closet.

Go ahead come on up those stairs buddy...

.40 or .45, the 9mm would be enough stopping power but for the price difference between a 9 and a .40 I would go with a .40.. And for safety get this type of safe..

The only thing new it brings is RF opening, which is stupid, and a cell connection to tell you when it's been moved or attempted to be opened and give a gps location.(That'll cost $420 + monitoring costs).

Which could end up costing you more than the gun itself in a few years in the rare event someone tries to take your gun box. Easily not be a problem with a simple $10 security cable.

Gun Vault makes these kinds of boxes, though they are square, that do quick code input and biometric fingerprint opening, for half the cost of this. plus back up key opening for when the battery is dead, cause as the maker of this says "If the gun box is not plugged in and the battery is dead it will not open. It has to have power to open."
