For anyone curious, they’re actually designed to be used as computer speakers. I had a pair for that purpose and they sounded pretty amazing for the size and form factor when paired with the included sub. They’d certainly sound much better than TV speakers in this setting.

u/silenc3x · 12 pointsr/ultrawidemasterrace

I imagine he likes them for their retro look and doesn't plan on replacing them. Plus, theyre Harman Kardon, probably sound pretty good.

Don't listen to naysayers, wireless speakers are perfectly fine provided you accept you're not going to get the ultra high fidelity experience. Which I suppose is okay for casual couch surfing, right? :)

A few thoughts on your requirements:

  • If you're looking around yourself, avoid Bluetooth speakers at all cost. Sound quality is much worse than those which operate on wifi.
  • Don't place a 2.0 system on the sides of your couch. It will do no good to the sound. Here's how you should position your speakers to get optimal quality.
  • I wasn't able to find a 2.0 system with wireless with any of the popular, reliable manufacturers. Majority of wireless speakers are all-in-one units, such as the ones I mention below or soundbars.
  • Be careful and audition: all-in-one solutions will never give you sound quality (in terms of dynamic range and more importantly spatial imaging) as good as a correctly positioned 2.0 system.
  • If you can't audition, your next best bet is to order a bunch of gear from Amazon (generous return policy!) and test at your house.

    Now, possible solutions:

  • Sonos sounds great, but their proprietary locked-in wifi system can be a pain in the long run. And it doesn't support AirPlay, if you're into that type of thing.
  • Bowers & Wilkins stuff sounds great, looks very good, supports AirPlay: http://www.bowers-wilkins.com/Wireless-Music-Systems/Wireless-Music-Systems/
  • I have this Pioneer in my kitchen. Not sure if it's up your alley setup-wise, but it does pack a surprisingly massive punch. And a lot of bass. A ton of it. Maybe a bit too much (luckily it's possible to alleviate that issue if you have a spare sock ;))
  • This Harman Kardon Aura looks stunning, has tons of features and if it sounds half as good as HK SoundSticks, you should be happy with it.

No matter which you choose, you will need a source. Does your TV support wifi streaming? AirPlay? Anything else? If not, perhaps you could arm yourself with a receiver which supports AirPlay (not really recommended because you'll either get poor sound quality or you'll have to pay premium) or an Airport Express. Plug TV sound out → Airport Express sound in → stream to speakers. Simple.

NB I recommend AirPlay here and there simply because I use it all the time and I've been extremely happy with reliability, ease of setup / use and quality.

    Hope this helps!

Harman Kardon Soundsticks II

I got them almost 7 years ago during some sale on Flipkart, I think. Picked 'em up for about Rs 7,000. They are by far the most exquisite sounding home-speakers I've owned. Seven years and not a single issue thus far. Anyone who comes over and listens to music on them is immediately wowed by how they handle every genre flawlessly.

That, and they look like something from outer space.

This is what I have right now. I didn't have enough space in the car to bring them with me so they are currently at home and it sucks. But those Sennheisers seem like pretty nice cans for that price.

u/blacbloc77 · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

Since this is "budget" audiophile, I'll make a budget suggestion.

These sound phenomenal in a small room like a bedroom or office. I've had multiple sets--less than $200 too.

As far as using your headphones and speakers interchangeably... Can you just plug your cans into the soundcard and just (disable/enable) that input via the desktop preferences as you need it?

u/fallfastasleep · 2 pointsr/battlestations

Harmon Kardon has some of the best sound: https://www.amazon.com/Harman-Kardon-Soundsticks-III-Multimedia/dp/B0042F3K9W

If anyone has anything bad to say about these I'd love to read them because these sound amazing to me & have been using them for years now.

u/sumpuran · 2 pointsr/apple

Harman Kardon SoundSticks. Back then, they were way too expensive for the quality they offered. Prices have gone down though, they’re only $170 now; for that price, I’d say they’re fine. The styling doesn’t fit Apple’s current lineup though; they were designed in the time of the PowerMac G4 and iMac DV.

u/serris5555 · 2 pointsr/gamingpc

If you can dig the weirdness, the Harmon Kardon Soundsticks III are 150 on amazon. The are really natural sounding and they can fill a room in a very nice ambient way.

u/gingersluck · 1 pointr/vinyl

These are the speakers I use for my computer. They do have a standard 3.5 mm plug, and also a way to hook them up to a receiver.

u/sexual_pasta · 1 pointr/battlestations

I just ordered these guys, its reviews were pretty solid and it's in the price range I'm looking for. I was also able to save a bit by getting it used like new.

22 hour old post, you'll be best off just posting again so people see it.

These look kinda cool and I was wondering if they are decently loud? I'm not an audiophile but how would you connect these to your computer? I only have 1 audio port thingy on my motherboard but also have hdmi too. Thanks.

u/2518899 · 1 pointr/vinyl

Disclaimer: I've read through the sidebar threads, but I have probably missed something. I also know NOTHING about electronics.

I have purchased the following things:

turntable: Audio Technica AT-LP60 Fully Automatic Belt Driven Turntable

soundsticks: Harman Kardon Soundsticks III 2.1 Channel Multimedia Speaker System with Subwoofer

It seemed like if I hooked the soundsticks to the turntable I wouldn't be able to get stereo? I got this because it seemed like an easy setup. The turntable has a built-in preamp. I couldn't figure out how to connect these though.

So then I got:

receiver: Sony STRDH130 2 Channel Stereo Receiver

Here's the user manual for the Sony receiver.

Still couldn't figure out how to connect the soundsticks.

So. Sigh. I got these:

bookshelf speakers: Fluance AV5 Powerful & Dynamic Two-way Bookshelf Speakers for Home Theater & Music Systems

And now it looks like I need wires??! And "banana plugs"?? And why do the banana plugs come with so many pairs?? Do I need 12-pair? Why?

I am obviously not an audiophile, but I like the sound of vinyl, and I just want to listen to some records (jazz, classical, pop, folk, etc.).

What sound I do? Should I return some of these things? What do I need next to connect these things and play music?

Thank you in advance for your help!

u/k4osth3ory · 1 pointr/trance

I got the Harman Kardon Soundsticks III A little out of your budget, but phenomenal bass.

u/Marbla · 1 pointr/vinyl

This is my setup at that same price range.

Audio Technica LP60 - Around $120

Harman Kardon Soundsticks III - Around $160

A lot of people here will shit on me for my choice of TT, but I'm a big fan of it. I suppose my ears aren't as sharp as some, and I'm fine with that.

The speakers are really what makes my setup though. I started out with a set of Dayton Audio bookshelf speakers, which were actually recommended on this sub, but I found that the bass wasn't that great so I upgraded to the Harman Kardons.

u/Lastshadow94 · 1 pointr/audiophile

I'm looking for a solid set of speakers (2.0 or 2.1 setup, I'm flexible) for my room at college. I'm in a single-person dorm room, so pretty small, hard surfaces if people factor that in. I like really neutral sound reproduction (I have Shure SRH 840s, and I love the way they sound), especially considering that my music tastes go all over the place. I listen to mostly rock and metal (everything from Zeppelin and Floyd to Dream Theater to Fear Factory to Animals as Leaders, etc. etc.), but also some punk, electronic, pop, rap, folk, and country. I also probably will end up watching TV or movies with these, so that's a factor. I'm gonna be driving these from my custom PC build (no discrete sound card, but I'm willing to add one if it's going to make a huge difference). Only having a wired connection works, but something with Bluetooth would be nice so I can stream music from my tablet or laptop, but it's not a necessity.

So far, thing's I've looked at are:

[Edifier Exclaim e10] (http://www.amazon.com/Edifier-Exclaim-Bi-Amped-Speaker-e10/dp/B009XGH2HG)

[Harman Kardon Soundsticks III] (http://www.amazon.com/M-Audio-Studiophile-Powered-Speakers-Previous/dp/B000MUXJCO)

[Audioengine A2+] (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DQMJE7E/ref=twister_B00KVM3HNO?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1)

[M-Audio Studiophile AV-40] (http://www.amazon.com/Harman-Kardon-Soundsticks-III-Multimedia/dp/B0042F3K9W)

Anything I'm missing, or is one of these a solid option?

Thanks all!

Harman Kardon Soundsticks III.

Affordable, beautiful, great sound. Mine (Soundsticks I) have stuck with me for six years now!

u/bakedeh · 1 pointr/vinyl

note: I'm probably getting some decent speakers for christmass for my desktop computer http://www.amazon.ca/Harman-Kardon-Soundsticks-III/dp/B0042F3K9W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1415298416&sr=8-1&keywords=harman+kardon so maybe a set without stereo would be ideal, but I'm a complete noob so correct me if I'm wrong please

I believe they are called sounds sticks.

1. What is your budget?

I plan on spending around $200 for a set of speakers and accessories to make it work.

2. What are you looking for?

I would prefer a small profile (4" wide) satellites/speakers. I can't really fit bigger speakers with my current set-up. The size of the subwoofer (if there is one) won't matter as long as I can hide it or put it somewhere away from the speakers.

3. How will you typically be using the gear?

Usually, the gear will be used near-field, while I'm sitting in front of the computer (about three feet away). I will occasionally use it while being 10+ feet away.

4. What gear do you own?

I have nothing other than a motherboard with onboard Realtek ALC 892 and an optical S/PDIF output port.

5. What do you intend on using for a source?

I will be using a desktop computer. I may also purchase a Bluetooth-accessory if I ever want to use my phone with it.

6. What material will you be using your gear for?

I want my movies to sound great, maybe fantastic if possible for the price. As for music, as long as that sound good then I'll be satisfied. I listen to most types of music including classic, jazz, EDM, pop, rap, country, rock, etc. I usually do not listen metal, opera, J/K-Pop, dubstep (I do listen to EDM just not dubstep), and anything not in English.

7. Are you willing to buy used?

No, I do no plan on buying used. I have no preference over buying locally at NYC or online.

8. More information

I originally planned on getting a set of computer speakers, such as Harman Kardon Soundsticks III or Bose Companions 3 Series II. I have no preference over computer speakers or having to put a system together as long as it fits my requirements within budget. I would prefer a set of speakers with a wired/wireless remote and not on-speaker controls.

u/Michael-JP · 1 pointr/buildapc

What's your budget? I use these badboys and I love them.

u/Jubba_Gump · 1 pointr/vinyl

If your budget is that low than for now I would just buy a pair of powered bookshelf speakers. Your LP120 has a built-in preamp. It's certainly not the best. Actually, most regard it as bad but it'll get the job done. After that you'll want to save! save! save! until you can get something of greater quality. Additionally, you might want to look into having that preamp removed all together and buying a better one (all in due time).

I own an LP120 as well. I run into budget problems often. It's certainly not a cheap hobby haha. Sometimes I find myself asking "Do I want Weerd Science's Illogy box set, or do I not want to ping my credit report for not paying my car loan on time?" I usually do the responsible thing. What a bore.

I run mine through some Harmon-Kardon Soundsticks II I picked up a few years ago. It was originally for my computer, but they performed well enough with my turntable, so I decided to keep them there. If you can swing the extra 25 bucks I think it's worth it. They are powered so You won't have to worry about a receiver just yet.

Link to the speakers: Harmon-Kardon Soundsticks III.

I own the Soundsticks II, but the IIIs cost just as much. As far as I know they perform just the same. The name has an extra hash mark so they gotta be better somehow. That's how it works, right? Something something something bluetooth whatever.

u/unclesamsadick · 1 pointr/malelivingspace

Hey! Thank you for your speaker recommendations on my thread. I just had one more question! I found the Harman for $160 on Amazon. They seem to be the same model but it doesn't say it support Bluetooth like the one you linked me that's $229? Is that the reason for the price difference?

u/Saxplaya91 · -4 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

I would highly recommend the Harmon Kardon Soundsticks set.

They sound fantastic with any genre, and a great response range for their size, and I’ve had mine for 8 years with no sign of wear or degradation.
