If you're so inclined, you can get the 16gb Nexus 7 2013 right now on Groupon for $150. At that price, it would be tough to beat. If you're concerned about running out of space, you can get a micro-usb sd card adaptor that plugs into the bottom. Definitely not as ideal as a native SD card slot but it'll do in a pinch.
Some people say that the ASUS ME572C is the 2014 version of the nexus 7. It has a significantly faster processor and an SD card slot but it is missing features like MLH->HDML & Qi charging. You'll have to decide whether those features are worth the price difference.
ProTip: Get yourself one of these. Sure it's not nearly as convenient as having a built in SD card slot but this way if you need a large amount of storage for taking videos or pictures that makes for a decent substitute for the cloud. Plus it carries two cards.

The casting delay is kinda annoying but it's still fairly usable despite that.

It does drain the battery faster than usual, so I copy over my movies to phone from the card. Works wonderfully.

I'm kinda excited that I finally get to contribute something!
I'm sure there are other ways to do this, but this is how I pull it off. A micro SD card with a card adapter they're usually packaged with (this will be your main SD card in your camera. And a micro SD reader, this is the one I have . Once you plug it into your phone, check your gallery, and the pictures will start populating the galley. It's pretty much straightforward after that.
After much consideration, I think I'm going to go with the Turbo 32GB. I just learned that MicroSD Card Readers for MicroUSB ports exist and that will be good enough for me with regards to expandable memory.

Honestly, I already have an excellent 64GB MicroSD card that I've been using on my M8, and what I'd love most is a very minimal OTG accessory that just lets me pop in my existing microSD card. If anyone finds one, please post the link :)

I think they are moving to more internal storage space and foregoing implementing UHS-1 which will be outdated rather quickly. I'd rather have 128gb or 256gb internal and no external.
Although I do like external storage in case of a catastrophe, but I use a micro USB 2.0 UHS-1 micro SD reader that is no longer than a micro SD card and use it via USB-OTG to back up important things. Even with it plugged in I can put my phone in my pocket and it feels no different.

Meh. There are unexpensive microUSB adapters that you can purchase and bring with you for that particular situation.
