while they are expensive, you could also get a pull down mount, if its mounted somewhere high like above a fireplace. When not in use, you can put it back into its "high" position and when you want to use it at eye level, you can pull it down... something like this

What do you think about putting the TV over the fireplace on a pull-down mount so you can watch at a normal height most of the time, with the option to raise it up safely out of the way if you want to have a fire.

Or just have it on a TV stand right in front of the fireplace that you could move out of the way if you really wanted to have a fire?

Having the TV on that wall does seem to be the most logical place for it.

Some thoughts:

  • Light and comfortable movable chairs
  • Some way to protect the tv from VR punches. Either mount it high, get a mount that moves up/down (Mount-It! • Some have a circular carpet so you can index that you are in the middle of the room

If you are mounting a TV above the fireplace, do yourself a favor and get a pull down TV mount. That way you can watch your TV at a reasonable height and not have to constantly look up at it:

Any number of directions you could go with a major renovation, but I would suggest a minor renovation and put the savings elsewhere.

As for the minor renovation, I would paint behind the the tv to color match the columns (make it all look like one piece), then add an articulating tv mount such as this. Also, look to move that cable box (maybe mount it behind the TV or in the cabinet beside) and get an IR repeater or RF remote.

Something like a TV mantle-mount?. I'm looking at something similar for my living room.

I would suggest mounting it where the mirror is and using a pull down style mount. Something like this:

I’d use this mount and go with the largest tv that would fit. Also blackout top and bottom blinds. Sound choice will be the next step. No doubt projector in the basement where you have better space and light/sound controls.
