On a side note, there was a licensed by Nintendo third party controller made by Hori which uses a Game Cube like stick.

To bad you didn't buy a Hori

They go for about $100USD used on Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-64-Hori-Mini-Pad-Controller/dp/B000031KAG

At these prices you get 40% more Hori for your moly.

Hori also made the only good third party N64 controller. It's durable modern-style analog stick has people like me preferring it over the original controller.

PDP have yet to produce a controller that doesn't suck - just read reviews for controllers like this. Definitely go with the Hori option, they have almost always produced controllers that are on par with first-party offerings, if not surpassing them.

EDIT: I should probably mention that above both of those options I would still recommend using the wired GC controller adaptor that Nintendo are releasing, along with an official GC controller, as obviously I can say with 100% certainty that the controllers are comfortable and well-made. But if you have your heart set on one of the Mario-themed controllers, definitely go with Hori, I am willing to bet that it will at least be of passable quality.

of all the posts i've read about buying expensive things in japan for a fraction of what they cost over here, I would look out for Hori products, especially the Hori Pad Mini
even if you don't like the nintendo 64 that would get you a fantastic start to the system.

Not even the Hori Mini Pad? It's officially licensed by Nintendo with no extra gimmicks like turbo or anything.

Some good news for you: a less weird n64 controller does exist. It was exclusive to Japan, though.

This is an interesting option.

I believe Siglemic switches to this controller when he is doing Bowser battles in SM64 when he spins around because of the thumbstick. It is also reminiscent of a GC controller in some ways, which you might like for Smash.

NOTE: I have never used one of these myself, only heard of them.

Get a Hori mini pad. It's a more normal-shaped N64 controller with a Gamecube stick.

Super Mario 64 speedrunner Siglemic actually uses an N64 controller for most of the game because of muscle memory, but switches to a Hori pad for Bowser throws because he can spin the stick faster.

Sorry, I'm going to have to make you eat your words.

Hori Fight Pad Mini for the N64. It's known around the world as the best N64 controller. It uses the GameCubes analog stick, and has better weight and grips than the original N64 controller.

Can also get a Hori minipad.

This is actually a speciality of mine as I play N64 currently, speedrunning SM64. Since the analog stick is so shit, most hardcore SM64 speedrunners buy a Hori Mini Pad, which is by far the best 3rd party controller available.
