You're welcome.
Probably something like this.
Also, if you happen to already have an N64 controller you can Buy an adapter to plug it into your PC via USB.
Edit: I do recommend this item. I use it myself. Also thanks for the gold :D
I replaced a full set of 4 N64 joysticks and thought it was incredibly easy to do. The joysticks are sold as a very contained component.

Amazon 4$ Looks like the AV cable is the same as 64/GC so get to searching/soldering !
This adapter
This is my opinion, so take it as you will;
Many here are saying specialty shops for games and systems, and frankly I just don't see the point of that. blah blah nostalgia but bottom line is that paying what the thing costs new from a reseller (no profit to the original developers of the hardware or software) is hugging the line between "Stupid" and "Stupid Hipster".
Get your Sega Controller, SNES Controller, NES Controller, N64 controller... or just a good general controller which can be used for many games. I own a few of these and I'll tell you right now that overall they feel very authentic. I have the black version of that N64 controller for example and once I start playing I can't tell the difference between it and the original.
And then get a good pack of ROMs to get you started.
There are so many advantages to emulating these systems that it's hard to decide where to begin. Simple, reliable, and you can fit whole libraries of games on a thumb drive. From right now I could be playing any NES title you can imagine in a minute, and switch to any N64 title in the same time without screwing with cords and boxes taking up space.
---
I respect the fact that piracy is a no-no. However this money is not going to the people who make the games. It's going to resellers who are charging you for nostalgia, so you can use unsupported equipment which can and will screw up on you (if you don't get bored with it and wonder why you dropped a few hundred bucks on games from when you were 10).
On a side note, there was a licensed by Nintendo third party controller made by Hori which uses a Game Cube like stick.
https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-64-Hori-Mini-Pad-Controller/dp/B000031KAG
From there TIL someone finally made a good alternative to Adaptoid : http://www.amazon.com/May-Flash-Controller-Adapter-Nintendo-64/dp/B002B9FIUU/ref=pd_sim_pc_1

That's red and white out for sound, and yellow for video. Most HDTVs still have one set of analog composite video with red/white stereo. If yours does not, you may need a composite to HDMI converter.
If you still have your old N64 controllers, you're probably better off buying an adapter instead. I have no experience with this particular USB controller, but I've noticed that third party "retro USB" controllers tend to be worse than their first party predecessors.
You can buy a replacement joystick for your Nintendo 64 controller on Amazon for 10.95$.
I mean... you could get another one...
If you decide to get it, you are going to need the expansion pak for majora's mask if your n64 does not already have it.
http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-64-Expansion-Pak/dp/B00000INR2
You can probably find it cheaper somewhere.
I think its this one, on mobile and the Amazon app only goes back so far. May Flash N64 Controller Adapter for PC USB by May Flash http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002B9FIUU/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_NAQVtb1DPKDHQ
So, I just ran across mine the other day...
Is there an N64 to USB converter?
Edit: There is!
YUP. The gamecube sticks stuck into the housing for the N64 sticks works great. I bought this exact one from amazon and it's been a dream. Much more sensitive than the original stick style and it feels sturdier in every way. (I was playing through OOT and MM before BOTW came out)
https://www.amazon.com/Redesigned-REPLACEMENT-Joystick-Controller-Thumbstick/dp/B009MRZAUC/
Edit: You do not need special screwdrivers to replace the controller joysticks. Just Philips Head

http://www.amazon.com/New-Nintendo-64-Controller/dp/B000810DDA/ref=pd_sim_vg_1
Boom . 20 bucks and you have the back catalog at your disposal.
No, I meant expansion pak.
You need to hack one of these in there
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002B9FIUU
You can actually put a Gamecube-style stick in an N64.
To bad you didn't buy a Hori
Buy this
that sounds amazing. if only I had such a section at one of my local stores. I'm still missing a few Gamecube games I want very much. part of why I haven't simply found and bought those is because I'd rather not spend more than $30 on a used copy of a 10 year old game. is there anything good in those cabinets?
another note for you, you need a pretty great computer to run Dolphin properly. if I had a dedicated GPU I could do that no problem, but an Intel 2450M with integrated graphics runs Dolphin very slowly. Dolphin is still very bloated, and there's a lot they can probably flatten out as time goes on, but right now, I don't have the power for it. considering that this is a 2 year old computer trying to run something designed for 13 year old hardware, it isn't just my lack of a phenomenal GPU, since Intel Integrated 3000 is comparable to a top of the line Geforce card from about 5 years ago, but as it is right now, you need a beastly computer to run a Gamecube emulator. it isn't that simple for everybody.
the nostalgia factor isn't a problem for me, because with an adapter and one of my many Gamecube controllers, I can map out my stuff the right way and play with the real controller, much like I already do with the N64. with the original controller, the nostalgia is basically the same, without as much hassle in as many ways, and with the ability to play rom hacks. for me, that's a win. that said, I like having the actual hardware as well.
And use something like this to hook up your N64 controller
They go for about $100USD used on Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-64-Hori-Mini-Pad-Controller/dp/B000031KAG
At these prices you get 40% more Hori for your moly.
Hold on, what? Are you trying to plug a PlayStation cable into a GameCube? Of course that doesn't work. I'm actually amazed it even fits.
You need a Nintendo composite video cable like this one or an S-Video cable like this one. Go with the latter if your TV has an S-Video input.
Hori also made the only good third party N64 controller. It's durable modern-style analog stick has people like me preferring it over the original controller.
I usually get an adapter to -enter controller type- from amazon example. Playing n64 games with a 360 controller was nightmare.
Nintendo 64-to-USB adapter
USB OTG adapter
I made an original post here with other emulators I've tried it with.
First google search brought me to this.
Why replicate when you can use the actual controllers? Adapters might be pricey, but are your friend.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002B9FIUU?pc_redir=1405420755&robot_redir=1
Speaking from experience just head to your local video game store (one thats sells used stuff) then buy the best three used nintendo brand controllers they have. Just check to make sure all the buttons are good the sticks don't matter at this point.
Now hit up amazon and look for these http://www.amazon.com/Redesigned-REPLACEMENT-Joystick-Controller-Thumbstick/dp/B009MRZAUC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1369407445&sr=8-1&keywords=n64+joystick
These joysticks are not like the ones that come with the nintendo controllers they don't have the ball joint at the bottom that wears out. Look at these other sticks for comparison. http://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Joystick/dp/B000F7V2GO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1369407445&sr=8-2&keywords=n64+joystick
You can see how they are different. The joysticks are easy to swap out and you will not wear them out unlike the traditional joysticks. You will always have "tight sticks"
Hope this helps you out man.
Then buy one of these, because an S-video cable for SNES/N64/GC is almost impossible to find in stores without the standard yellow plug also attached, and when they have the yellow plug attached they are more than likely to be connected wrong.
Nah dude the buttons are on the wrong side. Lol.

If you want to use your game cartridges, then you need a console. There is no simple do it yourself way to play them without a snes or n64 console.
However, On the computer you can emulate games by using an emulator such as project64 and download roms (virtual rips of the cartridges) from a website such as emuparadise and emulate them on your computer. You can use a keyboard to play these games but the best way is to buy a n64 controller and get a n64 to usb adapter
Mayflash makes quality gear..
I highly recommend these guys as they maintain driver support.
If you have good N64 controllers, consider a USB Adapter.
If you want something basic, go with this Mayflash N64 USB Adapter: https://www.amazon.com/MAYFLASH-N64-Controller-Adapter-Pc/dp/B002B9FIUU/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Mayflash+n64+adapter&qid=1570001200&sr=8-1
I haven't tried the Mayflash adapter yet, but I gave one to a friend, and she seems happy with it.
If you want something really good, try this one. It even has Controller Pak and Rumble Pak Support!: https://www.raphnet-tech.com/products/dual_n64_to_usb_adapter/index.php
Raphnet makes a ton of really good adapters for lots of different consoles.
Happy Gaming!
Usb n64 adapter is like 10 dollars if that. I have one that's a 3 in 1 n64/ps2/gamecube one
edit: here's one i found after 3 seconds of google: ps2/n64/usb adapter - $4. go nuts.
The N64 uses 2 cables, a power cable and an A/V cable. The power cable is completely proprietary and unique to the N64 and it looks like this.
The A/V cable is a standard RCA composite (yellow-red-white) on one end. The other end is a proprietary connector shared by the N64 and Gamecube. If you have a Gamecube or find a Gamecube A/V cable, you can use it for the N64 as they use identical cables. It looks like this.
If you have a newer TV and it doesn't have composite input, you'll need to find some kind of adapter. Composite cables have 3 channels: left-audio (white), right-audio (red), and video (yellow). The audio channels (red and white) can be plugged directly into your sound system if you have RCA inputs, or they can be fairly easily adapted to whatever inputs your sound system has.
The video channel (yellow) might be more problematic. Your best bet might be to adapt from RCA to coaxel or s-video, if your TV has either of those inputs. If you're limited to HDMI and HD component (red-white-green-blue-red), search for "composite to HDMI adapter" or "composite to component adapter."
Depending on the adapter you get, you might not need to route the audio separately as I described above. Just note that it is an option available if necessity demands it.

https://www.amazon.com/Redesigned-REPLACEMENT-Joystick-Controller-Thumbstick/dp/B009MRZAUC
theres also a gamecube style stick replacement for the n64 controller
Something like this might be good. I don't own an N64, but I use something similar for some of my SNES cartridges and they're quite good.
The analog sticks are still made, I picked one up off amazon for $10. Best thing I ever ordered. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00ANGDCDS/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1371418680&sr=8-2&pi=SL75
It requires you to disassemble the controller, but a 12 year old could put it in.
Right here.
This little baby works like a charm, and is the closest you will ever get to the original. It's a tad stiff at first and a notch high in sensitivity, but it works flawlessly after a few playthroughs. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to replace their N64 joysticks for a cheap price and a close resemblance to the original.
People have already correctly advised you to get an analog to VGA converter box, but I'd like to chime in and suggest you get a Nintendo S-Video cable as well. S video looks much better than composite, and the better signal you feed into the VGA box, the better the output will be.
http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-64-Expansion-Pak/dp/B00000INR2
about 20 bucks on amazon.
Since others are listing places to shop, here are some things to shop for:

Some game ideas (in no order):

***

Edit: some more games:
Ok, then I will definitely go with the Gameshark. I have no idea what you mean by the keycode, care to explain so I don't screw myself over? LOL
And I didn't notice how cheap some of these are http://www.amazon.com/GameShark-Pro/dp/B00000K4E1/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1414832595&sr=8-2&keywords=gameshark if this is the one you're talking about.
Since I have no idea what you mean by the keycode thing, if I unboxed this in the mail and put in SM64, how exactly would I get a timer + reset button to work? It's the same company by Action Replay I think, and you usually put in custom codes to alter the game, if that's what you mean by key codes. Thanks for the help btw!
Edit: I just found this on Sigs site http://siglemic.net/resources
Edit 2: I can't seem to find a quick reset level button, do you have that?
of all the posts i've read about buying expensive things in japan for a fraction of what they cost over here, I would look out for Hori products, especially the Hori Pad Mini
even if you don't like the nintendo 64 that would get you a fantastic start to the system.
PDP have yet to produce a controller that doesn't suck - just read reviews for controllers like this. Definitely go with the Hori option, they have almost always produced controllers that are on par with first-party offerings, if not surpassing them.
EDIT: I should probably mention that above both of those options I would still recommend using the wired GC controller adaptor that Nintendo are releasing, along with an official GC controller, as obviously I can say with 100% certainty that the controllers are comfortable and well-made. But if you have your heart set on one of the Mario-themed controllers, definitely go with Hori, I am willing to bet that it will at least be of passable quality.
Oh... Just buy one then.
They are super common, and cost about $3 on amazon, and are probably available at many used game shops. It is the same A/V cable a Gamecube uses, so you might even be able to buy one at some Gamestops. It is also the same A/V cable a Super Nintendo uses, if you happen to have one of those laying around.
HERE IS A LINK
I would love to achieve my dream of being a kid again with a [Gamecube] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00005QEFD/sr=/qid=/ref=olp_page_2?ie=UTF8&colid=Z2LOD62F5NIM&coliid=I1VPYGHW1X9VBQ&condition=used&me=&qid=&shipPromoFilter=0&sort=sip&sr=&startIndex=15) (preferably some with controllers and cords but I'm not picky)
and then if I got my gamecube then this could help me get my N64 working again! [C'mon...gimme.] (http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-64-AC-Power-Adapter-Pc/dp/B000F9JFXE/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=Z2LOD62F5NIM&coliid=I296WV2FCCKA7)
Okay now I getcha. I was under the impression you had a N64 composite cable. This is how I'm connected up to my TV now, so I would give that a try. Too many adapters will result in signal degradation. Even if the TV you're hooking up to does not have composite video ports, you're cutting down on the number of adapters you need and the signal will be better to begin with.
Those USB controllers are pure SHIT the thumb sticks on them are horrible and pretty much useless.
Best option is to pick up an original N64 controller from Ebay or craigslist and use it with this adapter: http://www.amazon.com/May-Flash-Controller-Adapter-Nintendo-64/dp/B002B9FIUU.
Trust me, you'll waste your money if you buy one of those cheap knock-off USB n64 controllers.
Or one of these, provided you already own an N64 controller.
emulators :D!
If you want to play with a friend, get project64k so you guys can play online.
edit:
get this if you want to use your controller
Try getting one of these, and then run an N64 emulator on your computer. I do this with my SNES controller, and it works amazingly well for that. Also, I have a slight advantage, since I have one of my computers connected to my flatscreen.
I'm a big fan of emulation. If you think you may ever want to some more N64 gaming, consider picking up one of these adapters. That, plus an n64 controller will run you less than $30 and you've set up a pretty authentic n64 experience.
Also, people have reminded you of Link to the Past, and even the original Legend of Zelda (which I'd recommend you try eventually, if nothing else to get a feel for the types of games NES had!) - keep in mind these are easily emulated and a ps3 or xbox controller will map very well.
Solution!
These things are fucking amazing.

But you can do that on pc too

Would have worked much like any gamepad:
http://www.amazon.ca/Dual-Controller-Converter-Cable-MAYFLASH/dp/B002B9FIUU
The N64's single analog stick might make things interesting, though.
Just get one of these and you're all set!
One might consider investing in one of these.
So the first step is getting the controller to pc adapter, I have found one for a nice price here (you do not have to use that one, in fact you should be able to use any adapter, sadly there is no other way to do this without an adapter). The adapter should work right out of the box, the drivers should be preinstalled on your computer. There should be settings where you can change what gets controlled by the N64 controller. If it does not work right away, shoot me a pm and I will help yout get the software required to use the controller.
Yeah. I use Project64 and use this N64 controller adapter that I just plug in the controller to. It works great!
Also, if he prefers real N64 controllers, I've got 2 of these and they work perfectly for 4-player Mario Kart action.
http://www.amazon.com/May-Flash-Controller-Adapter-Nintendo-64/dp/B002B9FIUU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1381797392&sr=8-1&keywords=mayflash+64
I have 2 of these. They have 2 controller ports each so I can have up to 4 players. Works awesome and is reasonably priced.
id rather use the real thing with a usb convertion thing like this and then you can do the game cube thumb stick modification
Hey, you used an amazon referral link. I went ahead and removed your comment because you can't do that. Here's a sanitized link so OP can have more ideas on what to get. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009D3HSTG
The N64 stick is a pretty common mod, you can buy the replacement stick assemblies online:
http://www.amazon.com/Redesigned-REPLACEMENT-Joystick-Controller-Thumbstick/dp/B009MRZAUC
Here you go.
You can get replacement analog sticks that are more like the GC controller's analog sticks:
https://www.amazon.com/Redesigned-REPLACEMENT-Joystick-Controller-Thumbstick/dp/B009MRZAUC
There's a writeup on installing it here:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=473585
I replaced a few of my worn joysticks with these:
https://www.amazon.com/Redesigned-REPLACEMENT-Joystick-Controller-Thumbstick/dp/B009MRZAUC
Makes it more like a GameCube stick. I know it's not to everyone's taste but it definitely made THPS2 a lot easier to play.
I bought GameCube style joysticks off amazon for about $10 each. I’ve used one for about a year and haven’t had any issues so far.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009MRZAUC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_i6dwCbZTYVJKV
It isn't perfect, but you can replace the [N64 stick with one that works like the Gamecube one] (https://www.amazon.com/Redesigned-REPLACEMENT-Joystick-Controller-Thumbstick/dp/B009MRZAUC/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_63_t_0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=FHK96TGDX7RTR0FS9NBQ)
Is this it?
I don't see how he can justify those prices. $80 for pokemon, they go for like $25! The battery costs $2 and someone could learn to do it in 30 minutes, and maybe a new sticker for a few more dollars. The N64 joystick replacement actually looks very easy to do, no soldering required, but that is atleast a reasonable price. $10 part and Tutorial
https://www.amazon.com/Redesigned-REPLACEMENT-Joystick-Controller-Thumbstick/dp/B009MRZAUC
These are incredibly good for replacing old worn N64 joysticks! Easy to install and will last much much longer!
The replacement feels very similar to a gamecube or Wii joystick.
Hope this helps!
don't forget to fix the joystick while you are at it with a repalcement unit
easy! 7 screws, and 2 smaller ones and the controller is apart. There were 2 or 3 more holding in the joystick unit, and it was plug and play. There was a minor bit of sanding to get it to plug in, then just put it all back together. I got it here but the price went up to $11.95 with free shipping. It's basically a new controller, and you won't have to worry about the joystick getting lose like the old ones did.
You can tell that the analog sticks aren't original in a lot of these pictures. Replacements can be found cheap and are fairly easy to install -

These dust covers are actually a third party kind I found on Amazon. I think Nintendo shipped them without any kind dust protection back in the day, probably hoping to sell accessories.
https://www.amazon.com/Global-Game-GGG0030-Nintendo-64-Cover/dp/B00AAIDNTW/
I definitely agree with you about that there's are misperceptions about the quality of the N64's library. Sure, not every game is Super Mario 64, but there's still a lot of fun games or games worth playing because they really tried something unique.
$6 Amazon Prime
After buying a new N64 game, I clean it with rubbing alcohol and then I put it in one of these dust covers http://www.amazon.com/Global-Game-GGG0030-Nintendo-64-Cover/dp/B00AAIDNTW/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1374584922&sr=8-4&keywords=nintendo+64+cover

People frown upon emulators since there is a tiny difference, but if you don’t have the money, use an emulator. If you have some to spare, buy an n64. Although I would start with the emulator because save states will be very helpful when starting out.
Edit: I would recommend a controller kinda like this, just, if you use an actual n64 controller, don’t use an original because the stick wears down over time. Buy a slightly modified one from amazon.
I don't know if you'd be interested but you can get a USB adapter that lets you connect a Nintendo 64 controller to your PC. They're not the best thing in the world but they're really cheap and they work well (I have one). I would sell you my Nintendo 64 with Ocarina of Time but I just can't part with it!
Have fun!
"N64 controller to USB" on Google lead me to this.
I should really just google stuff first, eh?
http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-64-N64-2in1-Controller-Adapter/dp/8565000168
First result on google.
There's a really good triple-adapter my friend has, for plugging SNES, PS1, and N64 controllers into USB... I forget what it's called though.
EDIT: I haven't found the exact adapter he has. It looks almost identical to this one, but his is a 3-in-1 (N64/PSX/SNES) rather than this 2-in-1 (which is missing SNES)... Might be better to get this one and have the option of using Saturn controllers instead (especially the awesome circle/3D pad)...
You can find them here for 20 bucks and probably cheaper elsewhere. I got mine for 10 bucks on ebay. The problem with handing one out is that the person that did that wont be able to play such classics as Donkey Kong 64 or GoldenEye (i think)...
edit: word
Get a Hori mini pad. It's a more normal-shaped N64 controller with a Gamecube stick.
Super Mario 64 speedrunner Siglemic actually uses an N64 controller for most of the game because of muscle memory, but switches to a Hori pad for Bowser throws because he can spin the stick faster.
This is an interesting option.
I believe Siglemic switches to this controller when he is doing Bowser battles in SM64 when he spins around because of the thumbstick. It is also reminiscent of a GC controller in some ways, which you might like for Smash.
Review
NOTE: I have never used one of these myself, only heard of them.
https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-64-Hori-Mini-Pad-Controller/dp/B000031KAG
Some good news for you: a less weird n64 controller does exist. It was exclusive to Japan, though.
Not even the Hori Mini Pad? It's officially licensed by Nintendo with no extra gimmicks like turbo or anything.

Third party replacement cables are cheap. This one is $5 http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-AV-Cable-Bulk-Packaging-Super/dp/B000035Y6B/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
For a few dollars more, you can get one with S-Video out http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Gamecube-Audio-Video-SVideo-Cable/dp/B000NBWRBQ/ref=sr_1_3?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1404327120&sr=1-3&keywords=snes+svideo

$4 and you get an RCA cable.
Switch boxes are nice, but are going to cost you more, and don't they usually just switch the signal, not convert the signal? As in, RCA in = RCA out? I am not sure they will change the signal to another type unless you buy a specialized box.
I got my first video game boner when I got this http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-64-Tilt-Rumble-Motion-Sensing/dp/B000JQJMZO
It was okay
Interestingly enough, I bought one of these for myself in the N64 days.
It obviously didn't work as well as the Wii with the games designed for tilt support, but this did add an interesting twist on playing Mario Kart 64 and Star Fox 64. I'm sure it's not for everyone, but I enjoyed it while the 64 was relevant.
2 MAJOR things: invest on a stick, like, for real. It REALLY helps your practice man. You have no idea how different the game feels when trying to adjust to a different controller. http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-64-Controller-Original-Grey/dp/B000PJHAD6 It isn't even that expensive, REALLY worth it. You can get a sick Mayflash with it so that you can plug it in for online play :)
Second thing is... don't forget to sign up! The deadline is really soon. Good luck lad :D
Sorry, I might have said something wrong. I meant the AV Composite Cables.
This cable:

On PC I can use an Atari 2600, NES, Genesis, SNES, N64, PS1/PS2, Gamecube, XBox, PS3 (with bluetooth), Xbox 360, Wii (with blutooth), XBone (Micro USB), PS4 (Bluetooth) and Wii U Controllers as well as the the countless other 3rd party controllers.
On Xbox 360 I can can use an Xbox 360 controller.
I'd recommend sticking with an authentic controller and getting a USB adapter. I use this to play original smash bros on PC and it works great.
Those knockoffs never have the same feel. I bought genuine N64 controllers and ran them into a converter like this one:
http://www.amazon.com/May-Flash-Controller-Adapter-Nintendo-64/dp/B002B9FIUU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1394835336&sr=8-1&keywords=n64+to+usb
It is perfect for playing on PC and you don't need additional controllers to play console.
I see your new obsession is N64 games! Awesome. I think you'd enjoy this item - you could also play N64 ROMs on your computer should you want to "try before you buy" for your collection!
I would love this or this (or any combination of things from my Nail list, really). Thanks for the offer and as Mario would say... WAHOO!
Adapter? Amazon.
BTW, Thinkgeek has this N64 USB Controller. They also have NES and SNES usb controllers too.
These are absolutely mandatory.
Haha I mean not to look like a dick but more so to help your dreams come true. http://www.amazon.com/May-Flash-Controller-Adapter-Nintendo-64/dp/B002B9FIUU
cheaper alternative
I've heard this is not as good as the adaptoid due to compatibility issues, but it is worth a try!

Pretty sure this is the adapter I have, most of them work fine though (https://www.amazon.com/MAYFLASH-N64-Controller-Adapter-Pc/dp/B002B9FIUU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1467744522&sr=8-1&keywords=mayflash+n64)
You could uh... let me have them :)
But if you don't wanna.... fineeeeeee

You'd be better off with an Xbox 360 or PS3 controller, or this and an old N64 controller.
... they are junk, break easy, and the thumbstick is practically unusable. Total disappointment 8bitdo worked on this. Their other controllers are great.
I don't have a solution I accept. A workaround is getting an original N64 controller and then getting a USB adapter for it.
https://www.amazon.com/MAYFLASH-N64-Controller-Adapter-Pc/dp/B002B9FIUU/ref=pd_cp_63_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B002B9FIUU&pd_rd_r=KH9T0CQCHFN2N7ACTAMZ&pd_rd_w=2JdMZ&pd_rd_wg=Zv55X&psc=1&refRID=KH9T0CQCHFN2N7ACTAMZ

They don't have a long life expectancy and can fail at anytime due to shitty manufacturing. They're just roms put on empty carts from the internet.
Just grab one of these and use an emulator.
https://www.amazon.com/MAYFLASH-N64-Controller-Adapter-Pc/dp/B002B9FIUU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1497942190&sr=8-1&keywords=n64+usb+adapter
USB to N64 control adapter. Amazon yo, go snag one!
I bought an N64-to-USB adapter found here. It works perfectly with project 64.
I bought it on Ebay.
This is the one i use
An adapter turns out to be the easy part.
The joypad mod I was seeing in my search earlier looks like it supports 1.11.2, but not the current version. Another one I found looked like it only supports PS4 and XB1 controllers.
So the answer may be "yes, if you're willing to play an older version of the game". Or, I guess look for something like joy2key.
Reposting since I still haven't had an answer.
So I am planning to purchase a N64 Adaptoid that someone is selling and I have a few questions that would influence my decision on purchasing it.
1.Should I even buy an adapter? There are 3rd party wireless and wired N64 look a like controllers for PC. Should I consider those?
2.Is the Adaptoid compatible with Windows 10 64-bit?
3.Does Adaptoid work well with N64 emulators? Specifically Project 64.
4.Is this adapter or this [adapter] (https://www.amazon.com/MAYFLASH-N64-Controller-Adapter-Pc/dp/B002B9FIUU) better than the Adaptoid? What are the Pros and Cons of each?
5.Is there any video showcasing the N64 Adaptoid? I would like to see how the pak peripherals work. (ex. Rumble, Transfer, Memory Paks.)
6.Is the Adaptoid Plug and Play? Or do I need to install specific drivers to get it working?
7.Can I use this for other things as well? Such as for steam games and other emulators like Dolphin Emulator.
Thank you ahead of time.
https://www.amazon.com/MAYFLASH-N64-Controller-Adapter-Pc/dp/B002B9FIUU/
I've tried some of the usb controllers and wasn't satisfied. They're often too light-weight or the buttons aren't as responsive, or some little nagging thing. Personal recommendation would be to go for the real deal and get an N64 to usb Controller Adapter or two. They're surprisingly easy to use (nearly plug-and-play, but you need to configure the emulator settings so it knows which is controller 1, controller 2, etc.).
That being said, it sounds like you might be happier getting the real deal hardware. Nothing will feel spot on compared to the original hardware. Plus, if it sounds fun for your bachelor party, who's to say it can't be something fun to do any other time you're all together in the future, right?
Congrats on getting hitched; hope it goes well for you.
This is the one i use - works perfectly.
http://www.amazon.com/May-Flash-Controller-Adapter-Nintendo-64/dp/B002B9FIUU
You could also get something like this if you already have n64 controllers, it's slightly cheaper and works great! Also let's you play with a friend :)
Just don't get one of these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002B9FIUU/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It requires calibration, which is.... not very manageable on the pi. Works fine on PC though.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002B9FIUU?pc_redir=1396367515&robot_redir=1
I got exactly this from Amazon a couple years ago. Works great, just gotta note the plugs are: player 2, player 1; from left to right.

I just bought this one recently, and it works really well:
http://www.amazon.com/Retro-Bit-Nintendo-64-Classic-Enabled-Controller/dp/B009D3HSTG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1414785760&sr=8-2&keywords=retrolink+n64
I guess you are correct [after all] (http://www.amazon.com/Retro-Bit-Nintendo-64-Classic-Enabled-Controller/dp/B009D3HSTG/ref=sr_1_cc_2?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1402787463&sr=1-2-catcorr&keywords=usb+n64+controller).
Still, I think it's a cool idea, especially since you can't play with 4 controllers on a tablet/phone if they are wired. I need me my Super Smash and Mario Kart. They could hook it up to the Nintendo store and it could play nes-n64 titles upscaled to HD. It's an especially good idea since some modern TVs don't support analog inputs like they used back in the old days.
I used these. Takes away a little authenticity, but they feel fantastic and will probably age better. They're also very easy to swap in.
I'd go with this if they are tourney legal. Not sure on it, but my friend bought 4 of these and 4 used original controllers and they are the best I've ever used.
It's actually one of those cheap N64 replacement sticks you can find all over Ebay and Amazon.
Emphasis on "cheap". They look and feel nice, but the pots conversion is total trash and you get some hefty input lag.
But programming your own chip is a great alternative that will work perfectly. Gonna cost you quite a bit more than 10 cents though, that's for sure.
Here is all you need to know.
A replacement stick is usually the best way, not sure if you can get replacements. Another method i found kinda skimmed through it but it sounds like he cleans it up and uses a piece of tape to tighten up the stick again (http://www.instructables.com/id/Loose-Nintendo-64-thumbstick-repair/?ALLSTEPS) Ah i did find replacement sticks. So full out replacement would be your best bet. (https://www.amazon.ca/Redesigned-REPLACEMENT-Joystick-Controller-Thumbstick/dp/B009MRZAUC)
Hey, psst. You NEED these.
Only takes about 10 minutes to replace and you only need a screwdriver. I've got 4 of them, work amazing.
Want an N64 classic? Make it a Slimmer model like what this guy did
Region Free? Get one like this or 3D Print it.
Want some wireless controllers? Try something like this or there's this option
Oh no! Analog stick is not too good on the OG controllers? replace it/Enkko , Replace it/ SteelSticks or use the GC Stick Method
Want HDMI / RGB Output? Do it yourself/ get an electronics person to help you
Want some fancy aesthetics for the console/ Controllers? Look no further!, LED Controller mod
Game list isn't what you wanted? oh no, you can't play Romhacks/ unreleased games? Get an Everdrive/ ED64
In total, besides the current price for the Steel Sticks and possibly the ED64 (depending on if you work or not/ have extra income), an N64 Classic Edition with all of those things, wouldn't be too far off budget.
You can just buy a redesigned module from, for example, amazon and use it to replace the controller's existing stick. It's plug & play so you only need a philips screwdriver.
link
Honestly I'm a much bigger fan of these that I just got from amazon instead. I don't really trust a $20 controller, and for that price you can pick up two of these. Installation was easy and it's just like playing on a classic N64 controller, but better.
Did you know Amazon will donate a portion of every purchase if you shop by going to smile.amazon.com instead? Over $50,000,000 has been raised for charity - all you need to do is change the URL!

Not actually an adapter. A replacement joaystick for your OG N64 controller.
I recommend a Sony Trinitron if you get a CRT. These sets are the most well-built among tube TVs, which matters a lot when you're looking for a 10-30 year old appliance. Sony also held a patent on the best CRT technology for almost the entire time CRT sets were relevant, so Trinitrons have objectively better picture quality than any competing sets of the day. Make sure you get the remote with the TV in case you need to adjust the picture. 20"-25" is a good size for a multiplayer gaming TV in the corner, but you might want an extra set of hands to help you move anything larger than 24" depending on how far you'll have to carry it.
Also, for $20-$25 online, you can get an S-Video cable for the N64. S-video is a much clearer video signal than the standard yellow-RCA-jack composite video, which is itself just compressed S-video. Here is a comparison between the two. If you decide to get one of these I cannot recommend ANY generic cables since they're almost always terribly cheap and it's a matter of luck whether they will work, so get a Nintendo-brand cable for either composite or S-video.
You can also get replacement N64 joysticks online, (like here or here) some of them arguably superior to the originals. A lot of those Mario Party minigames will kill N64 joysticks, especially OG sticks, which need to be re-lubricated (I recommend white lithium grease) after twenty years of use. There are also plenty of kooky, unorthodox third-party controllers for the N64 which, by virtue of their design, add some challenge to games you thought you were good at.
Sorry for the wall of text, there's just a lot of technical stuff that goes a long way in improving the retro gaming experience, and most of the high-end and cutting-edge stuff of yesterday is obscure knowledge now. S-Video will give you the biggest bang for your buck, and combining that with a compatible Trinitron will get you ~90% of what hundreds of dollars of equipment can do. And that means more games. =)
I have actually done this exact project before, even with NRF24L01+ modules.
Here's a few resources you'll want:
https://code.google.com/p/micro-64-controller/wiki/Protocol
https://github.com/brownan/Gamecube-N64-Controller
http://web.archive.org/web/20151030122223/http://www.eecs.umich.edu/courses/eecs373/Lec/StudentW14/N64%20Controller.pdf
This site used to have a ton of good information, but now it's down. That's where I got my info, but the stuff I gave you above should be enough.
In my controller I had:
I took the chip out of the N64 controller and wired all the buttons and the joystick to the ATmega. For power savings, the positive line for the joystick was hooked up to a GPIO pin so I could switch it off. Every 5ms the controller wakes up, reads the buttons and joystick state, transmits it, then goes to sleep again. With some other optimizations, I got the controller to draw less than 1mA while using it. :)
On the receiver side I had a custom board with an STM32 microcontroller, but you can do it with a Teensy 3. No voltage regulator needed, the N64 uses 3.3V for the controllers.
I recommend using something faster than 16MHz because while you can make it work, you'll need to do a bit of assembly and it's a bit more fiddly. Use a Teensy 3.0 at 72MHz and you'll have much more headroom.
You need to use the links I gave you to re-implement the N64 controller protocol in the Teensy. Every time the N64 requests controller data, just give it the latest info you received from the controller.
I'm not sure how much you know so this might all sound like a bit much! I'll be happy to try to help you but this sort of project will be very difficult if you don't have decent coding skills.
Here - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009MRZAUC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
In addition, I'd recommend something like this. Stock N64 analog sticks wear kind of quickly.
Yup! http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AAIDNTW/?tag=googhydr-20&hvadid=49480724816&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=9335099348298797600&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=b&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_51xcwpmiip_b
Then this will blow your mind. Time to fix that childhood controller :)

I don't mind the replacement joysticks from RepairBox that aren't the GameCube style ones
They're possibly cheaper elsewhere - look for the code on the box DN64R-AO4
These aren't perfect replacements, but they do the job just fine
Can buy a replacement and it'll feel like brand new
I use these with good results. Some light sanding and they feel close to the original.
I'm looking at something like this:
Cinpel S-Video Cable for Nintendo 64 N64 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KZLEFAK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_jKInxb3B1SCAG
For $10 each. I know I don't want composite on the line too, but this is a generic dedicated s-video (it appears).
Any experience?
here is the cable i used. works fine and has indistinguishable picture quality from my official one.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KZLEFAK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Get an adapter like this.
I have a Mayflash Super Joy Box 13 that adapts GameCube to USB. All the buttons and levers work (even the analog shoulder buttons), and it only cost me $5 on eBay. I used to use that to play N64 ROMs... an old classmate burned me his ROM collection. N64 took 6 CDs.
This. I've had good luck with these.
I use a X360 controller (map the C buttons to the right analog stick). If you want to play with an actual N64 controller you will need to buy an adapter.
As far as you laptop goes, what matters most is your video card. I was able to play this on an old dell latitude d810, but that was without the upgraded texture pack.
It runs really well on my gaming rig though.
Here are the minimum requirements.

Not an excuse.
N64 to USB
N64 to Wii / GameCube
I actually use an N64 on my PC for games like Persona 4 (emulated) and Street Fighter IV. USB-N64 adapters can be found for around $20. This Amazon listing appears to be the same converter I have, and you can find it listed on eBay by searching for "N64 USB" (sans quotes).
Warning: The vast, vast majority of N64-USB converters out there (mine included) tend to be rather hit and miss. I wouldn't call them "garbage," because when they do work, they work beautifully. The problem is, they only work with a small percentage of controllers. This isn't a problem with the adapter, but rather, it's due to the way that Nintendo manufactures the controllers. The converter that I use (linked above) only works with one of the five N64 controllers I have tried it with.
The exception to "n64-usb converters only work with a small fraction of controllers," I have been told, is the adaptoid. (You can find it by searching "adaptoid" on Google or eBay search or whatever.) This converter supposedly has 100% compatibility. However, it is out of production, very rare, and very expensive. When they pop up on eBay they usually go for $80+
In short, I would advise against trying to get a bunch of N64 adapters for you and your friends. If you're lucky, you might get one of your controllers to work with an adapter, but don't count on it.
If your friends have Xbox 360 controllers or PS3 controllers, those can be used. If you have a bluetooth adapter for your PC, Wii controllers can also be used. Xbox controllers can also be easily modded to work with PC. (The connection they use is actually USB, it just uses a proprietary plug.) If you have any of these controllers lying around already, I'd recommend using them just because you can, but I wouldn't recommend going out and buying them because they're more expensive than what you'd get from Logitech.
Word of advice about N64 controllers, if you find yourself using them (either with the actual console or because you got a working adapater): the joystick tends to become loose and worn out on the inside from age. If you ever see powder or a pasty build-up around the joystick's seat, that dust is plastic that is being ground up inside the controller. The best thing you can do for an old N64 controller is to replace the joystick. I bought new joysticks on eBay, $6 for a set of two, and installing them makes old controllers feel like new.
Just a heads up, I initially used an Xbox 360 pad with PCSX2, and it worked fine.
That being said, I purchased this a while back, and I far prefer using the actual PS2 controller.
^(Not to mention I always used to get the buttons confused when I used a 360 pad.)

Okay, so I need to go look up Doom on the 64. I feel like I need that in my life. lol
Mario 64 was so fun!
Oh, pick up a gameshark. I don't know if you had one back then, but it makes games crazy sometimes. Mario 64 had a levitation code that let Mario fly at will lol!
You should look into a battery backup system like this for the SNES and a DexDrive with a Gameshark following this guide for the N64
At least they aren't using one of these.
Can also get a Hori minipad.
Sorry, I'm going to have to make you eat your words.

Trying to document my project pretty well so that someone can follow without much prior knowledge or searching (pics and instructions to come later), but I do have more questions about your project.....
I took apart a OEM Nintendo64 controller and an 8bitdo RB8 controller, and purchased a gamecube joystick for n64. The joystick will need to be torn apart and almost entirely de-soldered down to just the potentiometers (per our PM chat, thanks for that); A few mods to the n64 controller housing to make space for the battery and USB port.
I found that the n64 L/R/Z keymats don't fit the 8bitdo L/R/Z boards well at all; L could be jammed in, but R refused to sit well and Z just is a totally different shape. Did you use the 8bitdo L/R/Z boards or did you replace those with the n64 boards?
Disclaimer: I am not an EE, nor do I have much "maker" experience, but I do understand very basic circuitry. It looks like these L/R/Z boards are just exactly simple wires, so I should be able to desolder the wire leads from the 8bitdo mainboard and the n64 mainboard to swap them out. Really, the trick is to get the battery and bluetooth mainboard from the 8bitdo into the Nintendo housing, with the gamecube joystick.
Once I have that working, and before I put it all back together, I want to take apart one of the Nintendo joysticks (with the light sensor) just to see if I can remove all the extra chips and wire the light sensors up to the 8bitdo mainboard. I don't think it will work, but its an experiment worth doing right?
OK. Not sure why people feel the need to reply to this if uninterested.

I assume this is the NTSC version of this right?
Do you think that this would work as well:

or should I just buy the PAL version of your mentioned cable?
I got both of mine (N64 & SNES) for $11 each.

Curious about using N64 controllers on Wii U.
Could I use something like this: https://www.amazon.com/MAYFLASH-N64-Controller-Adapter-Pc/dp/B002B9FIUU/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_63_t_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=XEWV6VSK3NZ30ETZAF5V
My thoughts - Normally when going to college, the best tool is a laptop. It takes up much less space in the dorm and allows you to take your computer with you to classes. As such, I would go with emulation + a decent TV + an HDMI output on said laptop. Pick up one of these -
http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Smartjoy-PC-Controller-Adapter-Converter/dp/B0009VIZSY/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1397721078&sr=8-11&keywords=SNES+USB+adapter
and a solid SNES controller. That will get you set for any NES and SNES game you want to play. If you want to expand your library a little more, pick up one of these -
http://www.amazon.com/May-Flash-Controller-Adapter-Nintendo-64/dp/B002B9FIUU/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1397721145&sr=8-6&keywords=SNES+USB+adapter
and a N64 controller. Then, as a small (10 minutes, tops) project, get one of these -
http://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Joystick/dp/B000F7V2GO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1397721237&sr=8-2&keywords=N64+stick+replacement
and you'll have an amazing N64 controller and a bunch of new games to add to your play list.

n64 to usb
Project 64 has HD filters. They look great on HD TVs. I use Xbox Media Center on Windows 7. Check out /r/xbmc.
You can get USB N64 controllers, they're expensive and the analog sticks can go wonky. Then you're out $20-$30.
I suggest getting an adapter and picking up some cheapo used N64 controllers.
http://www.amazon.com/May-Flash-Controller-Adapter-Nintendo-64/dp/B002B9FIUU
I just bought this and have been slowly making my way through the entire N64 catalog. So many bad games!
I forgot about this one!
I preferred to use the actual N64 controller and found that this adapter works the best.
As for 360, all the research I did led me to believe that the cord was only used for charging; no data transfer takes place. The 360 still uses wireless to communicate. The driver you posted is only for the wired controller. Edit: this appears to be the case.
I see two options. Both are N64 to USB port adapters so you'd need an original N64 gamepad. One is made by Mayflash for around $10 and the other is available from RetroZone for $22.
http://www.amazon.com/May-Flash-Controller-Adapter-Nintendo-64/dp/B002B9FIUU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1323973552&sr=8-1'
I got one of these and it works great.

Super Nintendo
Good luck man, I hope to have an emulator rig set up in the future.
I've been wanting one of these for the longest time.

that plus laptop w/emulator is the answer to all of your problems. I own 2, 4 player mario kart in 1080p, 5.1 surround sound (albeit matrixed) on my 42" plasma is just the most glorious site in the universe after a couple bowls
Or one of these.
I own a PAL N64 as well and I am running NTSC-U/J versions on emulator using one of these:

Maybe you were not aware of this option? Or did you decide against using an adapter on PC? It works really well for me. ;)
Couple of different options that are rather inexpensive -
Thinkgeek
Amazon
Obviously you would wanna go with someone domestic. These are just some examples.
I'm pretty sure that you can buy an adapter that will allow you to connect one to your pc. Here's an example.
I use a mayflash adapter myself, to play melee and project m online with friends over Dolphin using a gamecube controller.
Essentially, your dream is already possible. Just buy an adapter and you're good to go. If you have any other questions about setting it up, just pm me. :)
the plan is to make a 2 player control panel for mame by wiring a joystick and 8 buttons to an wired xbox 360 pcb per player. 6 buttons will be the game buttons, 1 will be the player start, and the leftover 1 will be for adding credits.
Wii i can use bluetooth to sync the controllers.
gb/ gbc / gab / ds I can use the control panel or a ps3 controller through bluetooth.
Then I am getting console plug to usb converters for snes, nes, genesis, n64, playstation, and gamecube controllers so i can play the emulated roms with real controllers. I would like some advice on which ports to buy because I'm not sure if they're gonna work. I read amazon review but thats it
I like MAYFLASH N64 Controller Adapter For Pc https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002B9FIUU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_.Z7iDbK771BN4

I don't have that one personally but I have their GameCube controller adapter and it works fine.
https://www.amazon.com/MAYFLASH-N64-Controller-Adapter-Pc/dp/B002B9FIUU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1499717347&sr=8-1&keywords=mayflash+n64
You could get a pair of USB n64 adapters. One plugs into a single USB port and provides two n64 controllers ports ([N64 Controller Adapter - Amazon](MAYFLASH N64 Controller Adapter For Pc https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002B9FIUU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_7FoMybDNN2HXG))
Also, N64 emulation on PC has actually overtaken the N64 itself as the best way to play your favourite old games! It sounds positively heretical, but hear me out.
The N64 has some built-in pseudo-anti-aliasing in the form of blurriness on its analog video out, even with the S-video cables. If you want to get a clear signal on a modern TV, you'd have to use a sharpening upscaler like a Framemeister, which runs well north of $300.
Conversely, Project64 is free, and runs well even on modest computers from the mid-2000's. Even a netbook can run Perfect Dark uprendered to 1080p at 60fps. And man, these old games are even more beautiful than you remember when you see them in true high def. Or b
And, if you get some of these, you get both a lag-free wireless experience, and the most authentic feeling thumbstick you can find short of a genuine new-in-box N64 controller from 1996. Or, if you already have good controllers, a couple of these and a few minutes to calibrate each controller will let you and your buddies huddle around the console in true N64 fashion.

If you want to use the N64 controller, its only $11 amazon prime shipped to use your original controller
I have one and it works perfectly. I was rather used to using the N64 controller for Zelda and I figured it was easier just to keep using it
For most games I use Mouse+Keyboard but for the few I prefer a controller on (non-64 games) I just use my 360 controller

You were saying?
https://smile.amazon.com/MAYFLASH-N64-Controller-Adapter-Pc/dp/B002B9FIUU?sa-no-redirect=1
Gotta get one of these or a N64 Controller/Usb in one.
Emulators aren't the same if they aren't on the original controllers, at least for me.
So I've been looking into controllers and I have come down to three potential conclusions on what to do.
1.) Buy a USB Controller, like this
2.) Buy a classic controller to USB device. like this
3.) Buy a small board that runs a keyboard and place it into a controller shell and map out the keys
I am just using the N64 as an example. I want all original controllers for the various games.
One other thought I had was buying the USB aftermarket controllers then cutting the cord down so its very short and wiring it to a Bluetooth transmitter and than plugging in a Bluetooth receiver into a USB hub. Then adding a LiIo battery pack to the controller. My only hurdle would be making it fit and still light weight and if I needed to have different channels for the four controllers.
You sure can but you might have a hard time locking on, gesturing, and jumping
But hell, you could even use an N64 controller or skip the adapter and buy one with USB. You can also do that with the GC controller!
If you're literally insane you could get an Atari Jaguar controller for PC
What I use to really relive my childhood is an N64 to USB adapter. You can get them for $12 on Amazon. The one I linked is the one I use and it works perfectly. It supports two controllers, so you can play with a friend or buy a second one to get a 4 player game going. If you still have your old N64 controllers, that's all you need.
It's the best compromise. Like I said, the Retron 5 technically uses emulation rather than original hardware to power the games, so it's not going to be a totally 1:1 experience when compared to the original hardware. The only difference between this and a Raspberry Pi solution is that you're using your own carts, because you can even get a USB 2-port N64 controller adaptor for like, $20.
To be honest, the only advantage the Retron has is that you get to use your old saves on the carts, but to be honest I'd be leery of doing that these days: We're already well-beyond the average lifespan of the save batteries inside N64 carts, and even the ones which use flash memory instead aren't 100% reliable anymore.

https://www.amazon.com/MAYFLASH-N64-Controller-Adapter-Pc/dp/B002B9FIUU
I use that with my PC and Step Mania to play DDR using Gamecube pads.
If you have the original N64 controllers, something like this should suffice.
N64 USB Adapter
I have one and it seems to do the job nicely.
well not exctly with original N64 but I play some years ago with project64 and hamachi, also i buy one of these for play
I personally use this for Gamecube games on the PC, and this
for N64 games, but recently I've just been using my Shield TV, and the controller that came with it seems to work fine. I'll try using the adapters with it sometime since the system has usb ports on it, and should work since the adapters work on Android phones from what I've seen.
You can always buy one of these if you want to use the original controller. I picked one up on craigslist for 5 bucks. Great decision.

I just have this MAYFLASH N64 Controller Adapter (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002B9FIUU)... so is this the wrk g type of adapter to get my n64 controllers properly configured to work on my nvidia shield tv (are you saying only the raphnet adaptor works)?
You're right, it does look like the Adaptoid is long out of production. A quick search leads me to this which appears to be highly rated.
Here's an adapter then
I'd be curious if i could use one of these http://www.amazon.com/May-Flash-Controller-Adapter-Nintendo-64/dp/B002B9FIUU/ref=pd_sim_vg_9 ... I still have all my N64 stuff. =) I could just play it on my n64 but thats no fun right?
flabbergasted
I haven't really made any decisions this year as interesting as other people. Today I decided to make lemon poppy muffins if that counts for anything. :::
Perhaps even (an omega build version, no clue if it would fit in a NES box) 2x snes adapter for the more retro, and 2x these babies as I have both SNES and n64 controllors lying around here! (that would make 4 SNES slots, 4 n64 slots, and 1 or 2 USB slots for an ultimate gaming box). That is if n64 works well on it ;P
I use this adapter with an actual N64 controller I got from game trader. Everyone here asking why you would want to use the worst controller of all time; you use it for N64 emulation. You can't play those games with anything else.
No problem man. Nothing beats the real thing when playing with emulators. They make them for the N64 too.
This works with a ps3, and it's amazing. I never expected it to work but on a whim I tried it. Both ps2 and ps1 controllers work. And you guys aren't going to fucking believe me till you try it, but you can even use n64 controllers on your ps3 with this.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002B9FIUU?pc_redir=1410318725 seems pretty good, thanks for that, I'm gonna pick one up

The Mayflash Adapter - the best way to play n64 games with an emulator.
However, remember that you should only be emulating games that you actually own. Otherwise this subreddit can't help you.
Both of those links lead to the same place
Local garage sales may sometimes sell Nintendo 64 controllers (or systems/games for that matter). I would offer this to you as a fun option.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002B9FIUU
Cool thanks for the insight. I have been mostly playing Mario Party on my original N64 but I don't even have s-video so it looks pretty rough. I found this on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002B9FIUU/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I have a PC next to my TV for my Vive already anyway so we are going to try it still using the original controllers.
Yes. It should just work. Only does video, though.
If you want to connect normal headphones or computer speakers to it, you'd also need to buy this. You'd connect the red and white plugs from the N64's RCA composite video cable (pictured here) to the adapter, then plug the 3.5mm jack from your speakers into the adapter.

For the 64, try replacing the thumb stick with the Video Game Museum's redesign:
https://www.amazon.com/Redesigned-REPLACEMENT-Joystick-Controller-Thumbstick/dp/B009MRZAUC
They took a Game Cube analog stick and retrofitted it to fit the N64. It actually lasts for a lot of hard plays, unlike the originals.
If you really want to improve your Quake 64 game, I just found a replacement joystick for your N64 controller for $12. I'd give it a shot if I still had my N64... :/
These kind of replacement sticks are the ones I'm thinking of getting
http://www.amazon.com/Redesigned-REPLACEMENT-Joystick-Controller-Thumbstick/dp/B009MRZAUC
The amazon reviews are mostly positive but there are a few naysayers.
They sell kits to convert the joysticks to ones more similar to those found on Game Cube controllers.
You can always buy a joystick replacement for cheap.

I've reconditioned half a dozen n64 controllers with these. They're amazing, way better than original, and aren't using fucking optical sensors and wheels like the original. What a batshit crazy design.
You can order just the joysticks here. It's super easy to install. Just take apart the controller, unplug bad joystick, plug in good joystick, and put it back together. I've done this a couple times for myself or friends.
For controllers, pick up any OEM controller you like then, if the stick is shot, replace it with an aftermarket one.
I've been using some GameCube-like analog sticks from here [0] to repair my old controllers. Some don't like them but to me they work and feel great.
There's also CWSFDavid who is working to 3D print some stockalike sticks! [1]
Lastly, if you want to "splurge" again, look into Hori controllers. They're probably the highest quality non-OEM controller you can get.

[1] https://www.reddit.com/r/n64/comments/4jp36s/update_on_joystick_replacement_project_first/
If you prefer to replace them yourself, the best option is SteelSticks, when they are available. The Hyperkin GameCube style joystick replacement is the next best option. However, there are dead zones with this joystick even though it is a better replacement than almost any other option out there. The resolution to that is to buy or build this.
You can buy replacement controllers that have better controls, or you can buy just a replacement joystick
This one is redesigned to be more like a Gamecube one
You can always just buy a replacement stick, there are copies of the originals as well as gamecube-style ones: https://www.amazon.com/Redesigned-REPLACEMENT-Joystick-Controller-Thumbstick/dp/B009MRZAUC
From what I've read the Gamecube ones don't handle as well as the original ones, but then again they also don't wear out so easily.
First, the query "n64 controller tight stick" on eBay tends to find original controllers for $20-30. I've bought two controllers advertised in this fashion, and both felt like they'd never been used.
I'm also keeping up on SteelSticks64. (site) (twitter)
They're in the process of making joysticks out of steel with the intention of emulating the original feel. They'll likely be quite pricey, but should function as a permanent replacement. I'm also checking in regularly to this project, which is looking to make injection-molded copies of the original parts.
Lastly, you can buy an aftermarket joystick. This Gamecube-style joystick is quite nice. I've got it in one of my controllers now, and while it's not quite the same, it's very nice. I've found most games to not play any different with it, and I'm happy not worrying about grinding the stick down any more.
It is. It was horribly designed. They got it right on the GameCube thankfully. There are a number of kits to replace the stick module (example) with a GameCube-style one.
I have read that those can have some latency issues. Do you have any experience with them. I'm assuming you are talking about?
http://www.amazon.com/Redesigned-REPLACEMENT-Joystick-Controller-Thumbstick/dp/B009MRZAUC/ref=pd_bxgy_vg_img_y
https://www.amazon.com/Redesigned-REPLACEMENT-Joystick-Controller-Thumbstick/dp/B009MRZAUC how about this?
Here's the thing with ordering these. I ordered from the same amazon listing twice and got a different version of the stick both times.
If you get one with a rubbery tip, you're going to experience the issues he mentioned in his video. Large dead zone, less degrees of freedom, very small area recognized as "slightly" pushing (making it really hard to walk slowly).
But if you get a plasticy one that has "V3" on the bottom, you won't experience those issues. The one I have with "V3" on the bottom has a slightly larger deadzone than the n64, but has all the degrees of freedom. And it's easy to walk slowly with.
The rubber one is still better than a loose stick, so for $11 I think it's a good option.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009MRZAUC
You can also find imitations of the original n64 stick on amazon and ebay (just search n64 replacement stick). Though I imagine you'd run into similar issues.
Personally, I feel the best controller for the n64 is the Hori one. But those are expensive these days.
I been using this one on a few of my old controllers and they seem to work fine for SSB, goldeneye, road rash, and the few other games I play regularly. Haven't tried them in joystick heavy games like Mario party. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B009MRZAUC. You might can find them elsewhere for cheaper.
I'm running a gc stick right now actually. It's a solid little stick. It has a smaller range of motion, hence being more sensitive but I like that. It lets me input actions faster and accuracy just comes from grinding. This is the one I'm using
Here are a few different options for you.

This is the one that I've ordered. They work well! Super easy to swap out too. ~10 minute fix. We help with this kind of stuff over at r/etrorestoration as well!

This cable is just as good or better than any Monster brand S-Video cable.
But honestly, if you paid the dough for an XRGB-Mini Framemeister you should really RGB mod your N64. It's not a lot extra to put out, and it's a huge difference. The colors on S-Video are still very dull and blurred together compared to RGB. My main N64 is an RGB-modded console plugged into a Framemeister, and comparing it with S-Video is a joke.
I have tried these already:

Will the ebay one you sent be better?
You can check either the Brawler 64 or the Tribute 64. They the best “modern” alternatives for N64 controllers imo.
If you prefer using your GameCuber controller there’s a ton of adapters around. Personally I would not recommend them since depending on the game you’re going to be spending a lot of time reconfiguring buttons. The layout doesn’t translate well between the two.
If you like the original form factor of the N64 controller there’re stick replacements on Amazon. Reviews are all over the place for those, some people like them, others not so much. But they’re cheap so maybe its worth a try.
Now as a fan of the original N64 joystick I am also obligated to mention Steel sticks 64 who sell parts that you can use to turn your broken N64 stick into an stainless steel behemoth. Several speed runners that are used to the original design use these because if properly maintained (aka: add a little bit of lubricant every once in a while) they’re pretty much indestructible and will last forever.
If it makes things easier, the Brawler64 by RetroFighters is a modern take on the N64 controller. Imo the plastic molding on the controller feels a little cheap - as well as the joystick, and it’s not going to be the best controller for shooters due to the sensitivity. But it’s still one of the best options out there for the N64. I actually have five of these controllers (one of each funtastic cooored variant they have released)
The Tribute 64 is another great option. It has more of a retro feel, almost like an N64 controller meets the GameCube controller.
I included Amazon links, but if you decide to purchase them then also consider ordering through their official websites or Castlemania games as well to support the small businesses :)
N64 controller to USB FTW! :)
The N64 expansion packs aren't that expensive.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression a lot of speed runs were done with emulators, especially on older console games. I figure it's easier to stream and all. There might be some kind of verification of the rom file and emulator that is being used, but I really have no idea to that extent.
For N64, I've always used an emulator called Project 64, specifically version 1.6 as it seems to be the most stable with a variety of games. You can download the game files, i.e. roms, from sites like Emuparadise.
For the controller you can just map keys to your liking on the keyboard through the Pj64 settings, but I definitely prefer using an original controller. So if you're looking to go that route, try to buy an original controller or two from Craigslist or a retro gaming shop. Then you'll need to get an usb adapter to connect it to your PC. You'll need to do some configuring/calibrating to get it functioning correctly with Pj64, but it's not overly complicated and I'm sure there are plenty of tutorials out there. Edit: There are third party N64 controllers and even some that have direct USB plugs, but I've never been happy with the quality or feel of them.
If you're looking to get into competitive speed runs, definitely do some more research as there may be specific recommendations for hardware and software setups. What I wrote above is all just from personal experience for gaming leisurely. I still have an original Nintendo 64 console, but I play some games on emulator because I do not have the cartridge or feel like spending the money on one. Hope this helps.
You can get a gamecube-style stick for your N64 controller for cheap, almost every runner for the game I play uses one for several levels.

hmm never saw this, saw a fix that used scotch tape but i thought that it would be to unreliable. I decided to get the redesigned joystick on amazon, looks more like a gamecube stick (Here). Though you can get the normal n64 joystick (Here). Was thinking of getting the normal n64 joystick for my other controller, just in case i don't like this new one. But, so far so good. I'll have to look up the springs, see how much they cost and how much of a hassle they are to get into place. The joystick is really easy to replace, just took awhile to take out 10+ screws that have been screwed into plastic for 10+ years.
