You may want to consider a dual E5-2670 build based around something like the NATEX combo (or eBay parts): http://www.natex.us/Intel-S2600CP-Motherboard-Package-Deal-p/intel-s2600cp2j-128gb.htm

Pros:

  • Significantly more total CPU horsepower (passmark at 24,936 instead of your build's 7,859)

  • Twice the memory

  • Lots of expansion slots

    Some cons:

  • Slower single threaded CPU score

  • Higher idle power consumption

  • DDR3 instead of DDR4

  • Bigger SSI EEB board means a bigger case

Are you looking to build one from complete scratch, or are you looking to buy one that already has some of what you need(hdd trays, caddys, etc)?

for my last NAS build, I ended up getting myself a 4U chassis. A good one that I can recommend is the RSV-L4500 You can also pick something like the RSV-L4000 for something with a horizontal bay if you like. Or If you know that you want it full of Drives and are comfortable stopping at 12 hot swap bays, Rosewills RSV-L4412 would be ideal from the get go, as you wont need to replace the bays that it comes with at any point.

I ended up purchasing 3 3x5.25 to 5x3.5 bay hdd caddys for a total of 15 drives. Looks exactly like THIS

After you get the case, you can put the parts that you like in it. Just read what size motherboard fits, get an appropriate power supply for the number of drives you'll be using, get an HBA that does JBOD and can can connect to the number of drives you'll be getting, and you're good to go.

Specifically for freenas, you can put the OS on a USB and run it from there, however because Small USB tend to be hit or miss, i recommend a SATA DOM or two, plugged directly into the motherboard instead of via the HBA. Two if you want to mirror the OS. Remember, do not use any form of hardware raid when using freenas.

I am building the same. The only suggestions I need badly need is CPU cooling. Its really comical how little information there is for this.

Then get 2 8 core xeons for around 100 bucks used and swap out the fans for ones not designed for a data center.

I went with this for a case the 12 bay hotswap version http://www.amazon.com/Rosewill-Server-Chassis-Rackmount-Metal/dp/B0056OUTBK/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1458666519&sr=1-3&keywords=RSV-L4411 , unraid and put whatever you need for pc parts in after that.

For example I put in
motherboard MSI - Z87-G43 (MS-7816)
CPU i5-4440
I ended up putting in 32 gigs of ram because I found a cheap deal but 8 to 16gigs should do it depending on what all you end ups using it for.

I also put in a RNG-407-Dualv2 dual ethernet 1gps card so I can set it for a bonded connection.

But as for the sata card I ended up putting in for extra ports I wont list here I have not got that to work yet and have not had time to mess with it.

But normally you dont need that big of a CPU I mainly do because I use it for Plex,minecraft game hosting, and a few smaller things on top of it being a nas.

They can be really quiet and have lots of room in them. I also have the watercooler radiator mounted in a push-pull on the center fan divider thing and it works great.

Didnt even think about that. Derp from me. So I guess all I need to worry about is getting 60fps at 4k? In which case...

Also, 1440p on a 4k monitor have some weird effects according to people. It's mainly because it isn't 1/4 like 1080p to 4k, so the scaling is a bit weird.
I guess 4K 60FPS gaming is what I am looking for. I keep telling my friends this though, I find myself gaming less and less now days. The game I play most is CSGO. I love playing campaign/single player modes in games though. So I wouldn't completely rule gaming out :/

Also, you're right about the RAM. It seems like DDR3 RAM, which isn't compatible with new CPUs.
So what would you recommend for new RAM? I feel like I could get away with 16GB. The only reason im at 32 is cause I had so many extra laying around

The Cryorig H7 may be compatible with your CPU, you might need a upgrade kit for AM4 that is found on their website.
I have a hyper 212 evo in my server which I wouldnt mind swapping out. Would I need an upgrade kit for that too?

How many drive bays do you use for the 22GB RAID server?
I have an 8 bay Rosewill 4U server chasis of which I am using 5 bays right now for a total of 22 terabytes

I'm using 4x Seagate 3TB consumer class drives.

I would NOT recommend them for your application, I got them because they were the cheapest drives I could get that would get me to decent capacity in a RAIDZ1 setup

The case listed in my build is great for what I built, although I think I got a slightly different version (i think I got the non-elite version for $20). I'll be moving it soon into this which has a pretty cool undocumented drive arrangement. it has 9x 5.25" bays across the front of the case, so you can fit a bunch of hotswap cages into it and hold up to 15x 3.5 drives
