Yes it is more that the $3 for the cord, but it is a one time deal...

I think it happens when you always make a full rotation of the handset between picking up and hanging up. I think you can mitigate it with something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Rotating-Telephone-Detangler-Clear-Black/dp/B001B0B0RA
They make little phone cord detangler thingees that are plugged in between your phone and the cord. It lets the cord spin freely/independently of the hand set and prevents this from happening.
