Softalk 21002 Phone Cord Detangler Clear/Black Landline Telephone Accessory
Fits standard handsets and handsets with recessed jacks up to 5/8" deep that standard size detanglers may not reach.Prevent the frustration of twisted, knotted and tangled coil phone cords. The no-tools-required Cord Detangler rotates 360 degrees to prevent your coil phone cord from tangling.Gold-plated metal contacts prevent loss of sound quality.Make sure to click the device all the way in and it isn't too short for the handset (refer to alternate image). For phone handsets with jacks deeper than 5/8",please try item B01D75JD20 which fits jack up to 3/4" deep

Get one of those phone cord twist relief things... I have one at work and it's brilliant.

Your answer is a $5 cord swivel

Yes it is more that the $3 for the cord, but it is a one time deal...

After you untangle it they make swivels for those so they don't end up like that. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001B0B0RA?pc_redir=1407511183&robot_redir=1

I think it happens when you always make a full rotation of the handset between picking up and hanging up. I think you can mitigate it with something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Rotating-Telephone-Detangler-Clear-Black/dp/B001B0B0RA

They make little phone cord detangler thingees that are plugged in between your phone and the cord. It lets the cord spin freely/independently of the hand set and prevents this from happening.

Ehhh, slip rings are used for data but just not fast data. For those of you that remember corded telephone handsets: https://www.amazon.com/Softalk-21002-Detangler-Telephone-Accessory/dp/B001B0B0RA

It really just depends on the application where they can be used.
