See something like this on sale isn't too far out of my price limit currently:

http://www.amazon.com/XFX-Double-947MHz-Graphics-R9290AEDFD/dp/B00HHIPM5Q/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1416689839&sr=8-3&keywords=r9+290

Any thoughts on that one or any model that is super well known? I mostly see Tri-X 290s and Windforce ones.

I don't mind at all!

About a 100 bucks cheaper than a 970, easy to over clock to make up the negligible difference, and mine never goes above 68° ... Getting ready to buy a second one, waiting to see if it goes on sale for black Friday or cyber Monday

u/hazmattsui · 1 pointr/buildapc

Thanks for the suggestion. I went ahead and bought http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HHIPM5Q/ref=ox_ya_os_product_refresh_T1

Comes with CIV: Beyond Earth and another AMD gold game

I haven't purchased anything for my build yet. Amazon has the XFX Double D R9 290 on sale for only $259.00. Is this a really good deal? I just want to make sure I'm getting top quality card for a really good price. I'm new to all this thus far.

That specific version of the R9 290 seems poorly reviewed, lots of DoA and poor customer support complaints. The R9 290 IS a good card though, I'd just list a different manufacturer. Maybe this one?

Unfortunately, I can't get one of those :P ! See the thing is, If i was gonna spend £230 on a graphics card, I'd probably go for a 970 just cause it beats 290 and is near silent. Also, you're comparing the cheapest 290 to the most expensive 280 if you compare the cheapest 280 for £132 and the cheapest 290 for £230 then theres quite the price difference.

You might be able to shave a few pounds off the price of your CPU by going through Flubit. ebuyer are one of the few sites they work against.

You might also save a few pennies by Flubiting the Amazon listing of that R9 290 as well. Not massive savings, but feasible that you'll save £10-15.

Hey back at my computer. Specs:

water cooled i7-4770K, Two XFX AMD Radeon R9 graphics cards, 16GB RAM.

I had no issues at all with lag during my journey, but oddly enough DID have an issue right as I returned to my base with lag. I chalked it up to me having played for so long. I also need to update the drivers.

Is that the best card for $250? It's the only r9 290 I've seen at that price, but I read that the brand makes low quality parts.

u/Xahos · 1 pointr/buildapcsales

Btw, same price on Amazon, and has a $30 rebate making it $209.99, so you'll save $5 bucks but risk a MIR

u/Wishfuldrifter · 1 pointr/buildapc

I'm assuming that the brand of the card still doesn't matter much? I've found several 290s that are in the $250 - $300 range but don't really see the differences in them.

Edit: This is the card I am looking at for reference: XFX Double D R9 290

Here is the Amazon link!, which is where I purchased it. LMK if you have any other questions about it.

u/FearsomeFenrir · 1 pointr/buildapc

DDR4 memory won't really give you much of a benefit (if at all), and also isn't supported by that motherboard. If you'd like to have a more powerful GPU setup the next step up would probably be an R9 290 - like this, but getting that would bring you over budget. That is similar to /u/diegodlv 's build, however to keep to budget an SSD boot drive wasn't included, which significantly improves boot times as well as speeding up the computer generally.

u/HaphStealth · 1 pointr/buildapc

Out of all the nonreference 290's, which are recommended and which are not? I've heard that the Asus DCUII model isn't very good, and also the xfx one.

Is there anything wrong with these two that makes them so much closer to msrp than the other cards?

I would get [this water cooler instead of yours] (http://smile.amazon.com/Corsair-Hydro-Performance-Liquid-Cooler/dp/B00A0HZMGA/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1407431857&sr=1-1&keywords=liquid+cooler) it's cheaper and I believe it'll be better overall. If you want to save more money, AMD right now has a better price/performance ratio than Nvidia does at the moment, so I'd recommend a [R9 290] (http://smile.amazon.com/XFX-Double-947MHz-Graphics-R9290AEDFD/dp/B00HHIPM5Q/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1407431962&sr=1-2&keywords=XFX+R9+290) or even a [R9 290x] (http://smile.amazon.com/XFX-Double-1000MHz-Graphics-R9290XEDFD/dp/B00HHIPN5A/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1407431986&sr=1-1&keywords=XFX+R9+290x). Unless you have a strong Nvidia preference I would go with AMD, better bang for your buck. I have the XFX R9 290 and it is an amazing card for the price. For your PSU go with a better brand like [this Corsair one] (http://smile.amazon.com/Corsair-Modular-Bronze-ATX12V-EPS12V/dp/B00ALK3KEM/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1407432062&sr=1-1&keywords=PSU) it's cheaper and has more power to offer. Otherwise it looks good.

Hey, I have an R9 290 XFX DD card that I've used for like, a year. I'm asking maybe $275, but I can negotiate a little bit.
