Chromebooks will be the best option for them. When my mom was using a Windows machine, she always had issues and questions. I got her an Acer R11 Chromebook and her computer experience has been much better. Also, Chromebooks have long life cycles before the need to be upgraded if you choose to.

If they want a larger screen, try the Acer Chromebook 14. I am not familiar with Chromeboxes, but I think Acer still makes the Chromebase, and ASUS makes a Chromebox as well. Check the links I posted:

Good Luck.

Here.

There's also the MSI Cubi for a bit less.

u/LonerIM2 · 4 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I would recommend this The Acer Aspire E 15

  • 8th Gen i5 quad core CPU which is suitable for programming and Photoshop, Full HD IPS 15.6 inch screen, 8GB ram, 256GB SSD, MX 150 GPU (a nice step up from the iGPU 620 on the other acer ).

  • Long battery life (advertised of up to 15-hours of battery life), weight 5.27 lbs, backlit keyboard, USB type C.

  • 8GB DDR4, 256GB SSD both are somewhat standards in 600 range so finding them on 500~ range is somewhat a catch.

Here is a little in depth review of it :

  • It is made from plastic, but it feels sturdy, screen comes with anti glare finish so it will work well outside.

  • Battery life is great about 5-8 hours of general usage.

  • Backlit keyboard, quite and comfortable, Trackpad have been getting some mixed reviews, I think it is a software issue, or maybe it is because some people are not used to trackpads.

  • Speakers are good, above average for laptops in this range, the gaming performance is also above average since it is only MX150 but it the best for the budget.

  • Thin, very quiet (can barely hear the fans), It has room for more ram as well as more SSD, Fingerprint magnet.

Don't buy a NUC. This is a ryzen build that will give you the platform to build upon if you'd want it.

You can put hard drives in here, you have enough PSU to put a decent GPU in if you'd want, a free RAM slot to move to 16GB some day, plenty of power.

A typical NUC around this price would have an i3 7100u. The ryzen is easily twice as powerful, and I'm even budgeting a 240GB SSD and 8GB of RAM - the nuc comes with none. https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i3-7100U-vs-AMD-Ryzen-3-2200G/m176913vsm441832

Obviously if size is a concern, this is a minitower not a palm sized PC. OTOH, a palm sized PC cannot hold a $20 1TB 3.5" drive nor an actual GPU if you wanted to game in the future.

u/blueskyfire · 3 pointsr/buildapc

Any NUC can handle your workload. I would suggest getting this one.

u/bdzz · 3 pointsr/buildapc

If you're just simply looking for something cheaper than what I originally linked than this i3 NUC should be fine too
Bring your own RAM and Storage though.

u/neums08 · 2 pointsr/buildapc

That may be a good use for an Intel NUC. It's basically a tiny barebones kit with a CPU and power supply, you put in your own ram and ssd or m.2 drive and you're good to go.

Here's one kit on amazon with an i3: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N4EOJNG/
There are a bunch of kits at various price points depending on how much power you need. Some come with storage or a copy of windows pre-installed, so look around for what you need.

It's an HP All-In-One like u/Traeks said, but its probably one of their 24-f00XX models with the HP logo photo-shopped out.

The Acer Aspire E15 would be a good option as it has NVIDIA GeForce GTX MX150 GPU which is enough for Minecraft, extremely long battery life is nearly 11 hours, backlit keyboard, and Full HD IPS 15.6 inch screen.

u/Dan6erbond · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Honestly, the new Ryzen laptops are great if you don't mind outdated drivers and some small issues I'd get the 15-inch HP with the Ryzen 5 2500U. If you mind those Ryzen issues, I'd get the Acer Aspire E15 with the MX150.

u/BestBeating · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

If you want to save some money, I would rather choose this Acer Aspire E 15, the price on Amazon is under $600

It has:

  • 8th Generation Intel Core i5-8250U Processor (Up to 3.4GHz),
  • 8GB DDR4 Memory
  • 256GB SSD
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX MX150 with 2GB of dedicated GDDR5 VRAM
  • 15.6" Full HD (1920 x 1080) widescreen IPS display
  • 8X DVD Double-Layer Drive RW
  • Up to 15 hours of battery life
  • Windows 10 Home
  • English Keyboard

For what his mother needs, this won't perform as well as the Chromebook.

Here's a terrific 24" desktop version.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01G26U492/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1501244835&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=chrome+desktop&dpPl=1&dpID=51buiYXAwSL&ref=plSrch

Versus Windows, this is faster, easier to use, requires no setup, updates or virus checks, boots instantly, is always accessible and it just works. Use the right tool for the job.

u/RafifHassan · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Thanks for the suggestion! it would help. might turn the pentium to an i3 or i4 because of how im stuck with intel HD graphics.

u/growingt · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

If you haven't been convinced to build your own little computer yet, you might want to track the price of that AIO on Amazon. It was down to $1150 a few days ago, which was probably a better deal than anything equivalent you'd be able to build. It seems like a decent enough machine, better performance than most AOI's. Definitely a markup for the form factor if you pay what Lenovo wants for it, but the Amazon price is pretty good.

Personally, I had a couple of desktops and a couple of laptops when I was a student, and I never kept the desktops very long. The extra power was nice, but they took up so much space and were such a hassle to move compared to my laptops. That Y910 may be a good middle ground.

u/netjive8 · 1 pointr/buildapc

No CPU?

Anyway, what about an Intel NUC?

u/skafinski · 1 pointr/homelab

Ow.. I missed that. I've looked for every processor (from above selection) and find that in this site https://www.passmark.com/index.html only one processor score over 2000. And than I've looked this NUC for acceptable price https://www.amazon.com/Intel-BOXNUC7I3BNHX1-Optane-memory-preinstalled/dp/B01N4EOJNG/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1503405386&sr=8-6&keywords=NUC7I3BNH&th=1 and it scores 3800. So transcoding with nuc would be easier it seems.

u/findar · 1 pointr/buildapc

For what you outlined they almost all cover the bill. You don't need a 1080ti to hit up Youtube and you don't need an i-7 for multiple tabs.

This can do everything on your list, just add a SSD, RAM, and OS and you're under $300. If you want something beefier you can go down this road.

u/roarkry · 1 pointr/PleX

/r/PlexACD Refugee here, looking to bring everything back in house. Curious if anyone has been in a similar boat and has some feedback?

Here are some details about my situation:

  • I'm trying to optimize for space and minimize heat generated so i can run server/data from a closet
  • I'm planning on buying a storage solution (to save space and cut down on my complexity) instead of building one
  • I have maybe 4 TB of media, looking to grow a TB per year
    • Redundancy in data is not critical required
  • Concurrent transcoding is a rare situation - maybe 2 720p concurrent streams @ worst case
  • Happy running Ubuntu

my approach (feel free to tear it apart or suggest alternatives)

  • NUC for Computer (this one has a CPU Passmark of 3824, so should be good for a 1080p and 720p concurrent) -
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N4EOJNG/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
    • I'll add 4 GB of RAM to it - seems like plenty
  • PRORAID drive enclosure (gives me the option to use RAID or some software equivalent like flexRaid if i want in the future) - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003YFHEAC/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
    • I'll probably go with RAID5 and just buy some drives up front that will last me a few years - sounds simpler than the software raid stuf

      My findings through this research:

  • a NAS likely won't give me enough horsepower to feel comfortable in the transcoding department
  • If i use a NUC to serve up data, i don't need an underpowered NAS for storage - i could do just fine with drive enclosure
  • There are WAY too many software RAID options out there

    Thanks!

Best AIO desktop for small/medium business employees to use?

~$600-$700 including monitor/mouse/keyboard/wifi

Bought 3 of these but need more. Recommendations?

u/holyteach · 1 pointr/buildapc

It's no joke. She was wanting to buy this and I convinced her to let me build her one instead. Was shooting for similar specs.

u/The---Technician · 1 pointr/suggestapc

This Dell Inspiron 3464 i3464-3038BLK-PUS would be a good machine for an office. Decently powered, crisp and bright display with wide viewing angles and a large storage.

u/eberehting · 1 pointr/ffxi

How cheap is cheap?

Can't really provide good links without a price range, but I can give you a bit of important advice:

Get something with an AMD/ATI card, do NOT get a laptop with an nVidia card for FFXI. nVidia cards don't support the older directx that ffxi uses, so you'll have to either run it on the onboard graphics or use something like dgvoodoo to force it to run on the nvidia and then there's still conversion issues.

This seems like a decent option, but at 4gigs of ram you're definitely not going to want to have it multitasking much: https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-80XV009CUS-A9-9420-AMD-GRAPHICS/dp/B0772VN88B

Looks like this HP all in one desktop pc. Only difference is that the speaker doesn't cover the full bottom

u/Wizard_Alien · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Thanks for the suggestion. Ended up going with the Acer Aspire E 15

u/coderck · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Acer Aspire E 15, There is this laptop with all the specs we have discussed above. But you might be sacrificing something. it isn't a hugely popular model as the Aspire 5.

u/mrspeaker89 · 1 pointr/laptops

Just as a matter of interest, is this the laptop you were referring to?

u/legos45 · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Hey,

two recommendations: first being the Acer Swift 3, which has:

  • i5-8250U 4-core processor

  • 8 GB of RAM

  • 256 GB SSD storage

  • 1080p 15.6" display

  • Weight of 1.7kg and battery life up to 7 hours

The laptop runs Windows 10 Home. It should be fine for the uses you listed, as well as light gaming. It is decently light and has an aluminum chassis.

If you can expand a bit on budget, the Acer Aspire E 15 has a dedicated graphics card which will be better for light gaming.
u/superwisemon · 1 pointr/Amd

Acer Aspire E on Amazon for £649

u/LongDuckDong719 · 1 pointr/Laptop

Based off of the links you gave me, it seems that you are restricted to buying in the UK and to some extent Europe correct? If so, then I would definitely suggest buying the Acer Aspire E15, For the same price as your cheaper option, you are also getting a dedicated MX150 2GB graphics card, which will be much better at light gaming than integrated graphics. Battery life is also pretty good as well, at least similar to the Inspiron line. The screen is where a lot of people seem to be disappointed with it, as it comes with a TN panel. Albeit, it is still 1080p and is bright enough even in outdoor use, so I believe that people are just expecting way too much out of a machine at this price.

As per per your other option, the HP Omen is also a decent buy, though obviously for a more gamer oriented user.
The 144 Hz panel is a great feature that'll make gaming and general usage look even better, however the GTX 1050 2GB that it ships with probably won't be able to hit those types of framerates, so you wouldn't even be able to fully utilize it. I'd stick with either your chosen Inspiron or my Acer Aspire. Let me know what you think.

u/starchaserro · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Hey,

I think you're looking for this one: Acer Aspire E5-576G and you can find it here: amazon UK for £650

u/fifa2003 · 1 pointr/LaptopDeals

I would go with the Acer Aspire E 15 Laptop, 15.6" Full HD, 8th Gen Intel Core i5-8250U, GeForce MX150, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Windows 10 Home, it is a better buy to me.

u/Extraverrt · 1 pointr/computers

Hey I might be able to help you out. For 600 dollars you can build a pretty beastly machine. The touchscreen will not be available for a desktop unless you buy a monitor with the pc built in meant for touchscreen use https://www.amazon.com/Acer-C24-865-ACi5NT-i5-8250U-802-11ac-Wireless/dp/B07CY79CKZ/ref=sr_1_5?crid=17XWFZVKKY756&keywords=pc+with+touchscreen&qid=1564634502&s=electronics&sprefix=pc+with+to%2Celectronics%2C129&sr=1-5 Your only other option would be a laptop and you dont want that. Now you will not get your moneys worth buying a prebuilt system such as a ibuy power ect. So you are gonna want to build your own machine. Its pretty simple, apply some thermal paste here, insert some ram here type of deal. so because you want portable your gonna want a micro atx system or a micro ITX system. Now for memory, Im assuming you mean storage to download games onto. If not your referring to ram. From your needs im gonna say 16 to 32 gigs is enough. 64 to over 100 gigs is not in your price range. or storage a 1 terabyte drive is pretty cheap. So based on the case you can keep adding more drives or buy a bigger drive. A 14 terabyte drive could be a future goal. Now for specs, for your price range I feel AMD Ryzen may be your best bet. Intel gets better the higher the budget. I will see what i can find. I will also send you a private message to talk more. For 600 bucks I can pick out a system with 16 gigs of ram a quad core processor and more then enough storage, but i will also try to make multiple builds for you. I will take you the intel and AMD rough and let you choose. I will send you links to info about the two and let you choose. Just know the cpu choice will determinate other factors of the build. This includes the motherboard. I will link you to a system builder folder just for you with build picked out I picked just for you. I will also send a link to a pc build guide. I will also look for good pre builts for you. Be expecting a private message.

The Acer Aspire E 15 seems like a pretty good budget option.

It's a little bigger than what you want but the specs are great for the price.
