$7.99 on [Amazon](BV Bicycle 5-LED Headlight and Taillight https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FTHGZU8/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_jpEAwbT5HD6ST). Nothing fancy, but safer. The just LEDs+silicone are even cheaper.

> Can car owners imagine taking parts of their car with them everytime they park?

If the exterior of my car was accessorized by easily-removable items I paid $20-50 for, of course I'd take them with me every time I parked.

Incidentally, I superglued my Cateye light to its handlebar mount when the mount broke, and I've never had a problem leaving it on the bike outside of bars at night.

Also, Four Loko is still a thing?

Hey!! Here is something that might really clean up your setup!!

It's a gopro mount for the Cygolite Metro series! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MWSFLTR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I was on the verge of designing and 3D printing one till i found that on amazon! It mounts to the gopro mount underneath my garmin and is amazing!

FYI I am in no way affiliated, just sharing my find that made me super happy!

Head- and tail-light set for $8.99 on amazon. It took 45 seconds.

Probably not the best set, but they turn on and make you visible.

Correct. Definitely invest in proper front and rear lights. After almost being t-boned in a poorly lit neighborhood (I have excellent front and rear lights), I purchased a pair of these in green. They are awesome, bright, and you can see me from the side very well. Just make sure you don't get blue or other colors that might be illegal to for general use.

I used the Sweet Home reviews to guide my purchases. Check "Review: The Best Racks, Baskets & Panniers" on the sidebar. They also have reviews on bike lights, flat tire kits, bike pumps, everything you'll need. You don't need to go crazy and buy it all at once, but it'll give you a good idea of what's out there, what people commute with, and have a good starting spot. Just for reference, everything they recommended will fit on your bike (it's the same one I have).

In another thread someone pointed out that the Urban 350 is on sale for half of what I paid last year here. It's a super good light, unless you're riding in the darkest areas at high speeds.

I use this one, it was $50. Its very bright and works damn well. I use it for winter fatbiking and its far brighter than a 1200 lumen one i bought from the LBS. i expect this one would be the same other than it has a battery pack.

Yeah, the bar light I'm upgrading to is the Cygolite Dash Pro 450, which has an auxiliary row of LEDs that can be set to blink. I am suspicious, though, that the 850 on my head will be more useful - I get the best responses out of cross-traffic when I shine my headlamp into their driver-side window.

I mean, seriously, though - I've already got reflective crap all over me, and two headlights that're many times brighter than what's required by law. It's shocking to me how bad people are at watching out for cyclists.

Salutare,

Vopseaua e neatinsa so far.

Lumina fata: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Apace-Illuma-ZT3000-Rechargeable-Headlight/dp/B0721QSJF4

u/wpm · 2 pointsr/bikecommuting

I use two lights up front. First is a Cateye HL-EL135N that during the day I have set to solid, and at night I have set to blink. At night I also run a cheapo Schwinn Snake Light near the fork crown set on full so oncoming motorists have something solid to gauge distance with. It also works as a decent backup in case the AAs in the CatEye shit themselves. The CatEyes mount is a bit fragile, I busted mine when I wiped out on a speed bump a few months back, but I used some Sugru to mend it, it still works fine, only time it's let me down is the last super cold day I rode home from work and the temp killed the batteries (which were old tired Amazon Basics AAs anyways).

You can get the Snake Eyes on Amazon Prime Now if you're ever at an address within the delivery area (judging from your vlogs you're definitely within the Prime Now area for Chicago at least once during the day). They also have a cheapo $8 set of front and rear lights (BV brand) that I actually used for my main lights for a while until I broke the front light off its mount (I think I was bringing it up my apartment stairs and hit the wall) The CatEye I mentioned above is also available on Prime Now. That's if you have Prime though.

Now that I think about it I get a load of my cycling gear off of Prime Now. Chain tools, shorts, water bottles, lights, tubes, they got it all. I even think I got my crank puller Park Tool from Prime Now.

I get a lot of shit from Prime Now lol.

To be honest, unless you're going to run an expensive dynamo light up front, expensive lights are a fucking ripoff. If it mounts to the handlebars, its a matter of time before someone steals it or it gets knocked off, and their light beams are all pretty shit anyways. LEDs are LEDs, I don't need to spend a crap ton of money on something that I'm not really using to see with, just to be seen with. I also don't buy all that crap about buying some 8000000 lumen monster for $80 that'll just dazzle the fuck out of everyone.

I've been happy with this battery pack. It's cheap, but it does the job for me.

I use it with a light like this and it works well for my mostly on-road riding. If you do a lot of very bumpy off road riding you might need a better mount.

Hope you get well soon.

u/I-Made-You-Read-This · 2 pointsr/Brompton

Might be a bit late but here's what I have.

  • Front light to see is a Cateye Volt 200. TBH I can barely see with it, but I ride only in the city and the streets are lit anyways.

  • Front light to be seen is some random flashing light (similar to this one). Doesn't light up the road at all, it's more so that other road users see me

  • Rear light is some cheapo one off amazon. It's cool because it cycles flashing red, blue, purple which I feel really catches your eye. I don't know if it's illegal because someone might confuse it with the police.

I feel like I should get button lights to put on things like my bag or helmet, but also don't think it's really that necessary in the city where it's lit up anyways.

I've been wanting to upgrade my Brompton to have a Dynamo in the front wheel and upgrade the light (as can be seen in this reddit post) but haven't had the money to yet. When I asked my local Brompton mechanics they said I'd have to wait for the autumn sale to end before they can give me a price (wtf?)

Definitely check out GCN's video on lights! https://youtu.be/BjXDSASTJn0

Oh I also want to get a helmet that has indicators inside of them like this or this. And something to laser print a bike lane behind me like this one with integrated indicators (colleague has one and it's pretty neat)

Just ordered my second one of these. Excellent light, and the brightest I currently own. Much brighter than even my Cygolite Metro. AND it's cheap.

u/cpbingo · 2 pointsr/MTB

I've been using this SecurityIng light for 3+ years with no issues at all and it is comparable to much more expensive systems. I bought a few larger batteries for backups and to extend the time I can use it (they're also cheap). For $25 if it ever breaks I wouldn't hesitate to buy a new one. Also added a diffuser lens to it... https://www.amazon.com/SecurityIng-Waterproof-Headlight-Headlamp-Bicycle/dp/B009QX8B2Q/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1499698709&sr=8-8&keywords=securitying

u/BensonBubbler · 2 pointsr/Portland

> I really like the lights that seem to pulse/twitch, but I think they're expensive.

My light (Urban Light and Motion 350) is only $50 and has the pulse function. I think it's a great value for a reliable, rechargeable light. The biggest con, in my experience is the strap will fail after a few years use and the battery is not removable/replaceable. All in all, I've been riding with it for 2 years and it's still running great.

The strap on mine recently broke, but I bought the adapter to put it on a GoPro mount and have it back in action.

u/NotDavidWooderson · 2 pointsr/cycling

Solid choice. Make sure you've done some battery tests so you know how long it lasts under different power settings.

Also, since that light doesn't have swappable batteries, you should consider getting a less expensive light to use as a spare/backup.
Something like Dash 450 ($40), or a Dart 350 ($31), bothj of which are really nice for the $.

u/thephyreinside · 2 pointsr/bicycling

Serfas E-Lume 450. I paid about $45 at my LBS

I'm not super impressed with it, but it does illuminate the road in front of me decently enough.
It has a blinking mode, but no pulse setting.
So far I haven't commuted with it, just riding in the early dark hours of the evening. If I were to commute regularly I would like something a little brighter and with the pulse setting.

https://www.amazon.com/Serfas-E-Lume-USL-450-Aluminum-Headlight/dp/B01JJPI6FM

Also, some I have researched have small lights on the side of the headlamp for better visibility from odd angles. My Serfas E-Lume doesn't have that feature.

u/joelav · 2 pointsr/cycling

I have 2 front lights. A Lezyne zectro drive front light for daytime visibility (to be seen). It's only 250 lumens, but that's plenty bright enough for a daytime flasher. However since it's getting dark so early now, I have been caught in the pitch black on the last 2 or 3 miles of my ride - which is similar to yours. Rail trail closed to traffic in a wooded area.

So I spent far too long on the internet trying to find the cheapest bright light I could that doesn't suck. I don't want to spend a lot because I'll be using it like 30 minutes a week. I don't want a giant light on my bars unless I need it. I landed on this one. It's awesome. It's much brighter than I was anticipating. I have no problems going down the trail at my usual pace (18 to 20 mph) in the pitch black. And it's only 23 bucks. It comes with a rear light which I haven't even unboxed so I can't comment on.

Another huge plus if you plan on doing some long nighttime rides. It takes standard 18650 battery cells. Charge up some spares and put them in your saddle bag

u/dunger · 1 pointr/MTB

These magicshine lights are awesome for the money. Plenty bright enough for any night time trail riding.
http://www.amazon.com/MagicShine-1000-Lumen-Mode-Light/dp/B0053HXFGQ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1341530043&sr=8-3&keywords=magicshine

They are rated at 1000 lumen but realistically probably 850. They come with a bar mount, but you can get a helmet mount too. Also, there is a wide angle lens available. I ride with one on my bars right now and it is bright enough but I could see putting one on your helmet and then a second on the bars with the wide angle lens. You can get two for much cheaper than a single nite rider will cost.

u/802bikeguy_com · 1 pointr/cycling

What about USB rechargeable headlights? The Niterider Lumina 350 or Cygolite Metro 300 are great. The Cygolite lights are, lumen for lumen, the cheapest on the market right now. There's also the Cygolite Streak 280 at an even lower price. The Cygolite models can also be purchased in a combo with a USB rechargeable tail light still coming in under $100.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/bicycling

Price range, brightness needs? Are you commuting on well lit city streets, so you only need visibility? Or are you commuting on rural roads where you need illumination to see?

For actual illumination, I've been a fan of the original MagicShine for a while. Bright as the dickins, and cheap (compared to other 900+ lumen lights).

u/takibiker · 1 pointr/bicycling

A picatinny rail for a bike? Like [this] (http://contour.com/products/contour-bike-mounts) It's an idea, if your lights use 123s are they rechargeable? A combat light doesn't throw a wide enough beam, for giggles I mounted my 500 lumen P2x Fury next to my 600 lumen bike light and the fury is all but useless unless you don't make any turns. Between mounts, and disposable batts every 90-120 minutes of use [this ] (http://www.amazon.com/NiteRider-Lumina-350-Rechargable-Headlight/dp/B008RLRMNC/ref=sr_1_43?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1348262724&sr=1-43&keywords=bike+light) might be better.

u/ObscenePenguin · 1 pointr/bicycling

I have a set of wheel lights which are designed around a similar ethos. They're called spokelits, small LED lights that you fit to your spokes for extra visibility. They're nowhere near bright enough to use as stand alone lights but they look awesome and cost a tenner

u/tubeblockage · 1 pointr/bicycling

In your price range you're looking at a very good gently used road bike purchased off Craigslist. Aluminum frame, carbon fork, Shimano Tiagra or Sora components, maybe 5 years old.

Regarding butt pain: I'd be worried if it started after a few miles. It's better for saddle discomfort to fade away rather than in.

Regarding lights: I have this front light and I find it reasonable for getting around town, although I always bike much slower in the dark when in unfamiliar areas. Bike light database has reviews of pretty much everything on the market if you care. I got by for a couple of years with a $20 light and the difference with my current $50 light is, literally, night and day.

u/Drazon · 1 pointr/bicycling
u/Pengwin3 · 1 pointr/bicycling

During the day, with a bunch of ambient light, it cannot have as great of an effect as in low light conditions. I would agree that this is dangerous, but only at night, I have this light, and I don't know if it counts as strobe or flash, but either way if I'm in a shitty part of town to ride in, I use it during the day. One right hand hook is enough for me.

u/Alexwastaken · 1 pointr/MTB

It's incredible! It makes that boring old trial like a brand new one. You still know where the drops and climbs are at, but they look completely different. Plus night riding lets you ride longer in the winter and at cooler times in the summer. I have two lights, one on my bars and one on my helmet. I think together they put out like 2300 lumens. At least they say they do. I started with a little helmet light that only put out 110. It was pretty dim, but I made it through a winter with just that. I would recommend something with at least 300 starting out, bet get one as bright as you can afford. Magicshine is the brand I use now, and can't be happier with them. Buy the helmet mount too. Just having a light on your bar kinda sucks. Whenever there is a small S-curve in the trail you lose sight of what's in front of you when you turn your bars.

There's a lot of bicycle tail lights or headlights that will clip onto backpacks, saddle bags, and helmets. Lightweight and long lasting. Blink or steady burn. They'll usually last for days or weeks on blink. Some popular brands are NiteRider, Blackburn, and Planet Bike.

Some come in pairs, red for rear and clear for front. https://www.amazon.com/BV-Headlight-Taillight-Quick-Release-Flashlight/dp/B00FTHGZU8/ref=sr_1_27?s=outdoor-recreation&ie=UTF8&qid=1504675536&sr=1-27&keywords=bicycle+headlight

I really like the USB rechargable NiteRider Lumina Series. The build quality of the lights as well as the mounts are just amazing. They currently have three models...

350 Lumen

500 Lumen

650 Lumen

Each version has three main brightness levels, plus a fourth dim level as well as a flash mode. If you are riding through city streets with streetlights, the 350 model is more than enough, and can be had for right around $60. I have the 650 version which can completely illuminate pitch black trails, even on moonless nights. On it's highest level, cars will sometimes honk/scream at you, it's so bright. On city streets, I use the lowest level.

For the tail light, I use another NiteRider product called the Solas. This is a VERY BRIGHT 2-Watt USB rechargable tailight. This run can be had for about $35.

I am super happy with it. Lots of battery life and it is INSANELY bright. With that said, you need to be aware of that brightness when you're coming up on other people going the opposite direction. You will absolutely melt their retinas if you don't point the light down as you pass. Its super easy to just point it down with my thumb and then raise it back up once I have passed someone. It does have the external battery so that may effect your decision. But I love mine.
